Chapter 3

Penulis: H.Spoonie
Connor's so-called righteous fury on Belinda's behalf was nothing short of ridiculous.

Just two weeks ago, I had led a trading convoy to negotiate with a neighboring pack. Because of my status as Luna, they treated me with the utmost respect, which clearly didn't sit well with Belinda.

She cornered me when no one was looking, her voice dripping with venom. "So what if you're Luna? The Alpha doesn't even care about you."

I didn't bother responding. I simply brushed past her and climbed into my carriage.

Yet, unexpectedly, she was unwilling to travel in the slightly worn-down mule cart. Consequently, she was left behind in the wilderness.

By the time Connor and his men found her, a giant eagle had its talons wrapped around her. She was battered, trembling, barely clinging to life.

With a breath as fragile as a dying ember, she whispered, "I only ever wanted to admire you from afar, Alpha. I never imagined even that would be taken from me. I just hope Luna will take good care of you. Then I'll have no regrets."

Connor howled in agony, cradling her like she was the most precious thing in the world. I stood at the edge of the crowd, watching with cold indifference.

After all, given a werewolf's innate prowess, even the weakest Omega was capable of nocturnal hunts. A bald eagle? It was a triviality, a speck against our might.

And Belinda had only been in the wilderness for three hours.

However, when Connor seized my ear and forced me into the depths of the forsaken well, the façade of indifference shattered.

"Clara, Belinda has night blindness, and you left her wandering alone in the dark?

"Her sister was carried off by vultures when she was a child. She's been terrified of giant birds ever since. Do you even understand what you put her through?

"I'll make sure you understand that being Luna doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. If you refuse to admit your mistakes, then don't even think about coming out."

Even now, he sat there, arrogant and self-righteous, waiting for me to break, waiting for me to crawl back and admit I was wrong.

But this time, things wouldn't go his way.

"Alpha! Luna—she's stopped breathing!"

Duncan's panicked voice froze Connor in place.

I watched Connor closely, searching his face for the slightest trace of regret. But all I saw was mild annoyance. "What did you say?" His voice was cold, distant. "Clara is dead?"Duncan kept his head lowered, not daring to meet Connor's gaze. "Yes… Luna… she was trapped in that well for over ten days. No food, no water… she… she didn't make it."Connor scoffed, as if he had just heard the most ridiculous joke. "Oh, she's still bluffing. Fine. If she's really dead, then call the priest for a ritual. Toss her corpse into the sea and let her see where playing dead gets her."His cruelty sickened me. I desperately sought to elevate my soul, to distance myself from him. However, an unseen tether held me fast, dragging me inexorably back. And then I realized—the force binding me wasn't Connor himself, but the wolf-spirit bracelet he wore. The bracelet, woven from wolf bone and silver thread, was an ancient relic of my father. More than that, it was the token of love I had once given

Connor's lips curled into a mocking smirk. "You really think she'd die that easily? I know better than anyone how tough she is."Belinda laughed, her voice dripping with amusement. "That's right. Our Luna is the kind of woman who could stomach a live snake. She may have gone days without food or water, but I believe she'll survive."The gathered maids giggled at the remark, but Connor's smile faltered for just a second.Watching his expression stiffened, I felt a flicker of satisfaction. "So, you do feel a little guilty after all."I remembered the day when Connor had been captured in a battle against the rogues. To save him, I infiltrated their base camp alone. By the time I reached his cell, I was bleeding, barely standing. But when our eyes met, there was no mistaking the shock and gratitude in his gaze. We disguised ourselves as low-ranking rogue soldiers, blending in to make our escape. It might have worked—until the rogues handed out food—snakes and centipedes—still raw,

A chill ran down Connor's spine, his hair standing on end as he stumbled back in disbelief."Who… Who put this disgusting thing in the well?" His chest heaved, each breath sharp and ragged. "Where's Clara? Find her! Does she think she can escape punishment by tossing a fake corpse down there? Bring her to me now!"I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of his words. My body was right there. Where exactly did he expect to find me?"Alpha… Luna is truly dead. Her corpse is already decomposing…""Lies! Do you take me for a fool?" Connor roared, drawing his sword in a fit of rage. And in one swift motion, he cut down the warrior who had spoken, his head hitting the ground with a sickening thud."If anyone else dares conspire with Luna in this deception, you'll share his fate!" His golden eyes burned with a dangerous gleam as he turned to his warriors. "I don't care what it takes. Find her!"Connor ordered the well to be sealed shut with iron and sent out his best trackers and hou

Aside from that brief moment when Connor saw my ring and let his sorrow slip through, he never showed grief again. Life went on as usual. He worked, he led, he ruled—unshaken, as if nothing had changed. But old habits betrayed him when he returned to the castle we'd once shared. He would instinctively reach back to hand off his coat, calling my name—only to be met with silence. Then, realizing I wasn't there, a flicker of confusion would cross his face before he recovered, as if the moment never happened. When the Blackclaw Pack's festival approached, his warriors brought him reports on the supplies and preparations. Frustrated, he waved them off. "Just let Luna handle it. Don't bother me with this."Then, seeing their hesitant silence, that same confusion flickered again. I understood his reaction all too well. When my father died in battle, I reacted the same way. There was only numbness, a strange sense of detachment whenever his name was mentioned. It wasn't until it happ

When Connor finally accepted that I would never return, he drowned himself in alcohol.Sometimes, in his drunken stupor, he would curse my name, calling me a cruel woman for how I had treated Belinda. But more often, he would scream for me, stumbling into the ice chamber where my corpse was kept, pressing desperate kisses against my decaying flesh.Even I, the owner of that body, found it revolting. When his drinking began interfering with his duties, the elders could no longer stand idly by. They summoned Belinda, hoping she could pull him from his downward spiral. She arrived just in time to witness the nightmare—Connor clutching my rotting corpse in his arms. Her face turned deathly pale. A gag tore from her throat, and she doubled over, retching. "Alpha, what are you doing?"But Connor didn't respond. He just held onto me, drinking like the world outside no longer mattered.Belinda lingered at the entrance, horror flickering across her face. But after a long hesitation,

Seeing Connor like this, Belinda's expression flickered with panic. She forced a smile and quickly changed the subject. She said, "You're just too kind-hearted. Even though you didn't love Luna, she was still your mate. It's only natural that her death would affect you."But I know you'll move past this soon… because you don't love Luna."Each word was deliberate. Calculated. Like a drowning man clinging to driftwood, Connor seized onto her reassurance. He echoed, "Yes… Yes, you're right. I don't love her. I couldn't have killed someone I loved."After several repetitions, Connor regained his composure. With Belinda by his side, he left the ice chamber and returned to the rhythms of his daily life. That day, Connor returned to his duties and rode along the pack's borders with his warriors when a sudden and powerful force crashed down on them—a presence so immense that the air itself seemed to shudder beneath its weight. Harold's voice was low, like distant thunder, as he pressed the tip of his dagger against Connor's throat. "Clara's life must be paid for with your blood."Connor was caught off guard. He barely had time to raise his arm in defense before Harold struck again, his attacks relentless as a storm. Blow after blow forced Connor back. "You promised me," Harold growled, his voice laced with fury. "You swore you'd give Clara eternal happiness, and because of that promise, I helped you kill your two brothers!"There was a collective gasp from the crowd. Connor's two older brothers had died under mysterious circumstances. For years, their deaths had been called an accident, an unfortunate twist of fate. But now, Harold had shattered that illusion, revealing that Connor had orchestrated their deaths."Harold, stop making things up!" Connor barked, desperately dodging another strike. The next moment, Harold lunged, his claws a deadly arc targeting Connor's throat. Though he managed to def

Connor pursued Harold's carriage relentlessly until his wounds betrayed him. He stumbled, then fell, hitting the ground with a painful thud.Belinda hurried over to help him up. "Alpha, are you alright?"Connor looked in the direction where Harold and the others had gone, his face filled with pain. Then suddenly, something snapped in place. He turned to Belinda and asked, "Belinda, when I was 12, my brothers abandoned me in the wilderness again. I was poisoned by those damned toxic plants and lost my sight for weeks. "You searched for me alone in the dark for days, until you found me. And because of that, you developed night blindness."Connor's voice was quiet, but his golden eyes bore into her. "Belinda, was it really you who saved me back then?"Belinda's eyes shifted nervously. "Of course it was me, Alpha. Why would you even ask that?"Connor watched Belinda's face intently. Her discomfort became palpable, and there was a visible shift in her posture and demeanor. After a l

He abandoned his duties and spent his days wandering near the Starlight Pack, hoping to find where I had been buried.Harold had laid me to rest beside my father, but Connor was never privy to the location.Connor's proximity to the pack was a thorn in Harold's side, and the latter's disapproval of the former was well-known. But the respect owed to the Blackclaw Pack's Alpha meant Harold's vengeance had to wait. …A month passed. For a full day and night, Connor sat in my room, completely still, staring at my diary. He didn't eat or drink. It seemed he was finally beginning to truly see me for the first time. When my words spoke of joy, he laughed. When they whispered of sorrow, his eyes darkened, rimmed with red. And by the time he reached the final page, he finally realized just how much I had loved him—how much of my happiness had revolved around him and how much of my suffering had been caused by him.Connor curled up on the floor, holding the diary close, pressing desperate kisses against its cover as if it were my face. "Clara, I'm sorry," he choked out. "I regret it so much. Please… Please come back to me… Come back to me, will you?"I sat beside him, emotionless, watching his agony unfold. What use was regret? Could regret bring me back to life? No. I wouldn't be moved by a murderer's tears.…The next day, Connor gathered the merchants who had traveled with us the night Belinda vanished an

Connor rushed back home, frantically flipping through my diary. Keeping a diary had become a habit of mine since I was six. When I married him, I brought it from my family home. With trembling hands, he found the entry from when I was 12. …December 17th The moon was bright tonight. I heard Connor's brothers bullied him and left him in the wilderness, so I knew I had to hurry and save him.I couldn't tell Dad. He would have stopped me from going to the southern part of the forest. So I went alone.…December 18thWas the forest always this terrifying at night? Luckily, I had finally found him. When I discovered him in the trap, his silver-white fur was coated in poison vine sap, and his golden eyes were dull and unfocused. He couldn't see.…December 23rdHe asked me who I was. He must have been ashamed, realizing a young girl had seen him at his weakest. So I disguised my voice and roughened it to sound like a grown man. He saw through it. He laughed. His laugh
