Chapter 6

When she arrived at the parking lot, she saw a black Lincoln parked there.

Curtis' assistant saw Margot and quickly opened the car door for her.

Margot realized Curtis was also inside when she got in the car.

He was in a black suit. His presence exuded a sense of irresistible charm, but Margot pretended not to see him and sat quietly beside him.

Curtis frowned. He asked gently, "Did you not attend the talk?"

He didn't see her when he was on stage.

Margot was prettier than most students. He could always spot her in a crowd.

Margot looked out the window. She deliberately avoided looking at him, but she still answered, "I didn't go."

"Why didn't you go?"

"You're about to divorce me. You surely won't want to see me," Margot declared.

"What?"

Curtis frowned. He was slightly perplexed.

He went to hug her. "Are you still angry?"

Margot pushed his hands away. "Mr. Crosby, behave yourself."

Crosby was stunned. Why was Margot so prickly today?

He forcefully pulled her into his arms. He said gently, "Don't be angry. I'm here to pick you up from school, aren't I?"

Margot was stubborn and pushed his hands away again. She turned her back on him. "Did you come here just to pick me up? No, you came here to give a talk."

"Do you know why I came to give you a talk?"

"How would I know?"

"Don't make guesses if you don't know, then. Don't give me that look ever again. Turn around and look at me."

Curtis lost his patience.

When had he ever been this patient with someone? Yet, she didn't appreciate it and continued to disrespect him.

Margot was aggravated. However, she had no choice but to listen to the high and mighty Curtis.

She turned around and lowered her head. She wanted to cry.

Curtis looked at her pitiful expression and felt sympathy for her.

He embraced her and said softly, "Alright now. The past is in the past. Don't be sad."

"In the past? You've already decided that it's in the past all by yourself?" Margot retorted.

He wanted to divorce her, so why was he treating her so gently now?

Did he think she was a pet? That she could be coaxed with a few words?

"If you don't want a divorce, we don't have to do it now. I never said we must get a divorce immediately."

Curtis carried her onto his lap. He patted her chest and said, "Margot, don't cry. You're already an adult. Do you still need me to comfort you?"

"I didn't ask you to comfort me. Put me down. I can sit properly."

She stubbornly wriggled to get off his lap.

Curtis's face darkened. He held her tightly. "Behave yourself. Don't make me angry."

Margot looked up and noticed Curtis's expression had darkened. She didn't dare to fight him.

She was upset but could only lay on his chest. She wanted to explain what had happened previously.

"I didn't look for Tammy. She was the one who came here …"

"It's already in the past. There's no need to mention it."

Curtis interrupted her words. He wanted to cuddle with her in silence.

Margot did not give up. She continued, "Tammy came to my school. She …"

"Margot, I said that's enough," Curtis said coldly.

"You're not allowed to look for her nor hit her. She has nothing to do with our divorce. You can take your anger out on me if you're upset."

Margot was speechless. As it turned out, he cared for Tammy more.

Margot felt like a sword had stabbed her in the heart.

She angrily got down from Curtis' lap. She sat beside him and looked out the window, not saying a single word throughout the ride home.

Curtis ignored her.

When they reached home, Margot refused to get out of the car. She sat still with her puffed cheeks.

He began to come closer. He wanted to carry her.

Margot was pissed. She slapped his hand away and stormed inside the house.

Curtis followed behind in exasperation.

There were only the two of them during dinner. Throughout the night, Margot did not utter a single word. She only lowered her head and ate in silence.

After eating, she returned to their room alone and pretended to read.

Curtis ignored her and went to his study to work. He only went to their room when it was 10:00 pm.

He went and took a bath. He returned with only a towel covering him as he stood beside the bed.

He noticed Margot was still reading. So, he climbed onto the bed and took her book away.

Margot knew what he wanted.

Her eyes were red. "Who do you think I am? Just a tool for you to pass the time?"

Curtis had intended to kiss her. He had been on a business trip and hadn't had the chance to be with her since he returned.

It had been more than 20 days.

But once he heard Margot's words, his mood vanished.

"Margot, how long do you want to keep arguing with me?"

If he didn't care or love her, she would not have dared to treat him like that. No one on earth would.

But his patience had a limit.

Margot felt wronged by Curtis's fierce demeanor.

"I just asked what you thought of me. Do you think of me as your wife? If I am your wife, why do you still want to divorce me and marry another woman?

"I don't want to argue with you, but I feel so disheartened. Curt, do you know how sad I've been for the past few days? Have you ever thought about how I would feel?"

She couldn't understand him. He wanted to divorce her, so why was he still treating her like that?

Curtis was speechless.

He felt uncomfortable watching her cry. He stretched his arms and held her in an embrace.

He sighed softly. "I'm sorry. It was all my fault."

"I don't want your apologies. I want you to distance yourself from other women. I don't want to divorce you. Can we just stay together happily?"

Margot couldn't control her tears.

For the past few days, she had been bottling up her emotions. She could not hold them in anymore.

Curtis felt his heart break whenever he saw her cry.

He held her tightly. "Alright. We won't get a divorce."

Margot was surprised. She looked at him with teary eyes. "Really?"

"Yes."

He held her in his arms. His feelings were a mess.

Suddenly, Doris called from outside the door. "Sir, are you asleep?"

Curtis still held Margot in his arms. He answered, "What is it?"

"Sir, there's someone called Tammy Vaughn here. She says she's here to see you."

Curtis frowned. He could not understand why Tammy was here at such a time. He got up and put on his clothes.

Margot never imagined that Tammy would be so shameless to come to their home.

Of course, she was even more upset at Curtis. He had immediately let go of her when he heard of Tammy's arrival.

Margot watched with puffy eyes as she watched Curtis change. She asked, "How do you plan on handling this situation?"

"I'll go down and take a look. Be good and go to sleep."

How could Margot fall asleep? She wanted to know why that shameless bitch was here.

She wanted to see how Curtis would handle the situation.

Curtis had changed into something comfortable and went downstairs. He immediately saw Tammy sitting on the sofa on his way down.

Tammy also spotted him.

She stood up and pretended to be shy. "Curt, did I disturb your rest?"

Curtis took another two steps down. He stood high and mightily in front of Tammy. "It's alright. Why are you here so late at night?"

"I tried to sleep at around 9.00 pm, but I kept having nightmares. I kept dreaming about the car accident. Curt, I'm scared to be alone. That's why I came here. Curt, do you mind?"

Tammy cried as she looked at Curtis. She was sure Curtis would not push her away once she mentioned the car accident.

He was indebted to her. He should use the rest of his life to pay off his debt.

"I don't mind."

Curtis remained expressionless as he turned to Doris. "Prepare the guest room for her."

Doris nodded and left.

Curtis bypassed Tammy and walked toward the living room. He asked with concern, "Are you hungry after coming such a long way? Do you want something to eat?"

Curtis was always kind toward her. Seeing that he was still the same, she smiled and walked over.

"I'm not hungry, but I can't sleep. Let's chat for a while."

Tammy motioned for Curtis to sit.

Curtis poured her a glass of water. Just as he was about to speak, he saw Margot standing by the stairs.
