Chapter 4

Margot was puzzled. Who could it be?

Curiously, she headed toward the campus gates where she was greeted by a middle-aged man.

The man greeted her politely, "This way, please, Ms. Stone."

Margot followed the man to a car waiting by the roadside. The man opened the door, and Margot spotted a well-dressed lady sitting inside.

Margot didn't know who the woman was, so she remained standing and on guard.

The woman in the car said, "Come in. I'll take you out to lunch."

Margot didn't respond, so the other woman continued, "I'm Tammy Vaughn. I don't know if Curt has ever mentioned me."

Tammy …

Margot recalled seeing this name on Curtis' phone and realized this was the woman he was going to marry.

Immediately, Margot was filled with animosity against the woman. She snapped, "What are you here for?"

From her seat, Tammy regarded Margot patronizingly. "I just wanted to chat about Curt. Why? Are you afraid of me?"

"Afraid of you, a shameless mistress?"

There was no way Margot was scared of Tammy. Instead, she found Tammy's car repulsive and didn't want to get in.

Although Margot was only five feet two, she wasn't an easy person to cross.

Tammy's blood started boiling when she heard the word "mistress". So, when Margot refused to get into her car, Tammy stepped out of the car in her heels instead.

She was over five feet five and wearing heels to boot, so Tammy was almost a head taller than Margot.

Haughtily, Tammy scoffed, "You sure are a lucky orphan. You were able to attend school and even marry him. I'm surprised his family agreed to the marriage."

Margot glared at Tammy. Even if Tammy had a great figure and looks, she didn't look all that young, either.

Margot had her looks and age to her advantage, so she bravely retorted, "He married me because he cares for me. Who are you to question him and his family's judgment?"

If Margot weren't pregnant, she would have left Curtis without a second thought.

However, now that she was going to have a child, she wanted to fight back. She didn't want her child to be born without a parent.

Margot didn't want to subject her child to a fate like hers. Curtis was her only family. So, she wanted her child to have a complete family.

Tammy paled. She never thought an uneducated brat like Margot would dare to speak to her that way.

Infuriated, she stomped toward Margot.

"Did you really think you would've stood a chance if I never left?" Tammy didn't deny that Margot had doll-like good looks. However, that was all Margot had.

Tammy didn't want to argue as she would only be humiliating herself.

"Listen here, old lady. You've already left him, so you're his past, but I'm his wife. You should know better than to bother a married man."

Margot's words were like thorns prickling Tammy's skin.

Although Margot was barely in her 20s, her fierce attitude made it difficult for others to win against her.

"You—" Pissed, Tammy shot Margot a scowl. "How dare you call me 'old lady'?"

"What else should I call you?" Margot raised an eyebrow.

Tammy itched to slap Margot, but she shouldn't lose her composure. So, she held her anger back and shot, "You said you're his wife, so you should ask him why he married you.

"Besides, no matter how long I'm away, as long as I return and ask him to marry me, he'll do it."

She continued, "You, on the other hand, are nothing but a tool for his leisure."

"What did you say?"

Margot clenched her jaw, her knuckles cracking loudly.

Tammy looked away and sniggered, "I'm just here to tell you not to get too ahead of yourself. You'll always be an ugly duckling no matter how hard you try."

She turned to walk away.

Unable to stop her temper, Margot rushed forward and grabbed Tammy's hair. "You're the ugly duckling here!"

"Aargh!" Tammy cried out in pain. "How dare you touch me!"

Tammy's driver saw what was happening and rushed over to help Tammy.

Seeing this, Margot shoved Tammy away and yelled at the driver, "Try it. My husband is Curtis Crosby. Touch me, and he'll make you pay!"

The driver immediately shrunk back with his head lowered after hearing Curtis' name.

Seething, Tammy screamed at the man, "What are you waiting for? Hit her!"

The driver hesitated. "I can't. She's Mrs. Crosby."

"You useless thing!" Tammy hissed, her hair a mess. The passersby who walked past looked at her as if she were a lunatic.

Shooting Margot one last glare, Tammy swore, "You'll pay for this."

She hurriedly climbed back into her car and left.

Margot remained rooted in her spot. Now that Tammy was gone, all of her false courage had dissipated as well.

Margot staggered to a bench and sat down, struggling to breathe.

Meanwhile, back in her car, Tammy fished out her phone to give Curtis a call.

As soon as he picked up, she began to wail. "Curt, can you drop by after work? Your wife came over just now and began hitting me."

"What?"

Tammy sobbed, "I know I'm making things difficult for you, but if you didn't …"

"I'm coming over right now." Curtis still felt guilty for what he did to Tammy, so he grabbed his coat and rushed out of his office.

While walking, he dialed Margot's number. Margot, who was just about to return to campus, was surprised by the call.

After a moment of hesitation, she answered the call.

Immediately, a man's voice, filled with annoyance, rang out.

"How long do you intend to keep this up? This is an issue between the two of us, so why would you bother Tammy?

"And how could you hit her? You're taking things too far."
