Sitting through trig class with my pen balanced between my lips and nose is a great distraction from the boring topic of triangles and formulas. I hate being in school because they sometimes force you to learn a subject that would not be useful to you in the future. What if I want to become a dancer? An artist? A rock star? Would I still solve for the missing side of the triangle commonly known as X?
My name is Gabriella Bryce.
I hate math.
I don't have friends - I am not sure if that is something that I should be proud of.
Well, it's not like I don't try to approach my classmates or try to interact. It’s just that I have a weird smile.
No, it's not the type of smile that involves weird and rotten teeth - I have perfectly white and straight teeth.
You see, my smile is fatal and dangerous. Just one look at these weapons and even the ferocious growl of a mountain lion would seem harmless. If this were a comic, I would call this attack: The Killer Smile.
Now that would be awesome. I won’t exactly mind it if it doesn't turn me into a friendless loner.
In my old school, this sort of smile was feared by all. They spread rumors about me killing someone - which is not true!
I could not stand it there. I was always that one person who everyone was afraid of. The one everyone would slam themselves onto their lockers just so steer clear from my path.
The sister of Annabelle, the creepy doll, is here! Run for your life because she has a fork in her hand! If only I could stab them and take them out of their misery.
I hate it. I hate my old school. That was why I was so relieved when my father got a job in Oldridge Town, which forced us to move from our old home and into a new life. It was only this year, my senior year, that I transferred to this school, Gridon High, which was way better than my old one.
I made a commitment to myself when I transferred to this school that I would not smile. I didn't want everyone to see my terrible smile, but it also didn't work out good. I had a few people speak to me at first, but as time passed and they didn't see me grin, they assumed I was a snob and began to ignore me as well.
I don't appear to be a snob. Possessing mud-brown hair, pale blue eyes, and high cheekbones, I have a decent face.
Pretty but snobby. That's what I hear the females said to me once in the bathroom while I was taking a shit.
And they say that it's a comfort room, but I could not find comfort at all!
The bell rang, signaling our lunch break. I was more than happy as I grabbed my textbook and shoved them into my bag. I made my way to the cafeteria, passing the hallway and rows of lockers to get there.
I ordered myself a plate of spaghetti and went to sit beside an emo girl named Julie. Julie is the usual type of emo girl. Black hair and black eyes. Wears thick eyeliner, blacktop, black leather pants with matching leather boots, and many piercings. Ever since I was called a snob, I had been sitting with her in the cafeteria. We're not really friends, though. We just sit at one table and mind our own business as we eat. Occasionally we would catch each other's eyes and would nod as if saying 'what's up?', then we would be back to minding our own business. It's like we're lunch buddies or something.
I looked up from my plate of spaghetti and towards Julie. I haven't tried talking to her, like starting a conversation. The last time that we said a word to each other was when I asked if I could sit with her at lunch.
And trust me, it was only four words: Can I sit here?
Then came her reply: Okay.
Maybe if I can find us a suitable topic then perhaps we might get closer? But what kind of topic?
I studied her for a while. She was reading a book entitled 'How to be a witch: A Spellbook for beginners. With spiral and skull designs screaming death. I gulped.
Calm down, Gabriella. Just because she's reading a book on how to be a witch doesn't mean that she'll become one. Who knows? Maybe she's just reading that out of boredom, and maybe she likes Shakespeare and John Green novels?
"Um...." I started. "Do you....like books?" I asked. Okay. Here it goes—first step.
"I don't," Julie answered shortly and took a bite out of her apple without looking at me.
"Oookay," I said awkwardly. "Then what are you reading?" I asked again.
This time, Julie did look at me. "A book about witches. These hold the secret to sorcery and magic. Did you know that you can make a love potion out of three ingredients? Ginger, dried frog, and horse testicles. Grind them up with a mortar and pestle until they get a powdery mixture and place them into your target’s food. They will pass out, and you have to make sure that you will be the first person that they'll see." She said it all with a straight face and without even blinking!
I had a mouthful of spaghetti in my mouth when she blurted out these things. The pasta started to taste weird as I pictured the dried frog and horse testicles. I opened my mouth and used my tongue to push the pasta and let it drop back to my plate as I wiped my mouth clean.
There goes my appetite. "Um....are you sure that it’s a love potion and not poison?" I laughed nervously and pushed my plate aside. Trust me, laughing without smiling is a weird thing to do.
Julie frowned and read her book once again before looking back at me. "Nope. It's a love potion."
"Well, do you have someone you like that you want to try to use it?" Don't give up, Gabriella. This is a step to friendship! The things I do to get a friend.
"No." She answered.
"Really? Then why are you sharing it?"
"Because I thought that you might have someone that you like. I am more interested in reading the pages about curses."
"Ohhh..." I started to reach for my bottle of milk, suddenly feeling thirsty.
"Would you like to read them too? Is there someone you want to curse?"
"Nope. No one." I shook my head and let out a shaky laugh.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah."
"Fine." She shrugged. "Suit yourself."
I was just in the middle of drinking my milk when Julie started talking again. "Did you know that a dog's pee mixed with a cat's eye is better at keeping your bones strong instead of milk? With proper setting and incantations, it works like magic." I choked on my drink and sprayed milk all over our table as I coughed violently in the cafeteria.
Note to self: Don't try to have a conversation with Julie, especially when you’re eating. It will not turn out well.
As the bell rang signaling the end of lunch, I told Julie goodbye and hurriedly made my way to my next class: Physics, where we study Newton's law.
I should probably be listening to Professor Barns as he teaches us the principles. He might give us a pop quiz later, but I wasn't really in the mood for listening.
Don't get me wrong, I am a good student and would usually get a B+ in this subject. It's just that I prefer to study alone and read a book by myself.
I learn better that way.
But just in case, I pulled out my notebook and started to copy the formulas that he had written on the board.
School finally ended, and I was free to go home, but I took a detour and headed for the library instead, where I worked on my homework. It was the only place where I could work quietly. After dinner, dad would always sit in the living room and watch sports channels to their maximum volume, while mom would be up and doing Pilates, and my brother...well he isn't living with us anymore ever since he got a job in New York as a doctor.
Besides, there are far too many distractions in my room that I can't seem to focus on the work at hand.
I pulled my hair up into a hair ponytail to keep it away from my face. I pulled out my textbook and the works given to us. I started with trigonometry first. I was almost tearing up when I saw the number of items that I have to solve.
This is undoubtedly going to fry my brain. Blast them teachers for giving us such tortures!
I finished one subject in an hour and a half. I could feel my head pulsing at the headache that it left. If the library wasn't air-conditioned, I bet I would be sweating right now.
Who needs to go to the gym when you have math?
I folded the finished product and carefully placed it in my bag as I started with my physics homework next, but I felt my eyelids growing heavy as I read through the first problem.

"Miss, miss, wake up. We are about to close the library." Someone shook me awake, and I looked up to see Mrs. Cauldron, the school's librarian. She's a woman in her 50's with dark hair that was starting to turn gray. She was thin, making her features look sharper. Her glasses hung from her nose as she looked down at me with an eyebrow raised and one hand to her boney hips.
I sat up quickly and noted that the sky was starting to darken outside. "Oh my gosh!" I exclaimed and started to gather my books and papers. "I am so sorry." I apologized as I ran a hand to my lips, making sure that I was not drooling. Thank God I wasn't.
Mrs. Cauldron eyed me with scrutiny. "May I see your student ID?"
"What?"
"Your ID. May I see it?" She repeated. She opened her palm to me as she waited for me to hand over my ID.
Hesitantly, I took it out of my bag and handed it over to her open palm. She raised it in the dim light and fixed her glasses to get a better reading. "Gabrielle Bryce. A senior." She read as she cast down those pitch-black eyes on me. "You know better than to sleep in the library, don't you?"
"Yes. Yes, and I am really sorry about that." I started to get up and took my bag from the table. "It won't happen again, Mrs. Cauldron," I promised as I stood there and waited for her to give me back my ID.
I don't know what will happen at that moment because the librarian seemed to look displeased with me. She eyed me one last time before she handed me back my ID. "Alright, but I don't want to see you sleeping in the library again." She said.
"I won't. Thank you." I stuffed my ID back into my bag and pulled out my cellphone to check the time.
It was already 6:23 PM. I'm supposed to be home by 5:30 PM. Mom is going to kill me.
I cursed silently as I waved at the librarian. "I-I've got to go." I pocketed my phone and was about to leave when the librarian called out to me.
"Be careful." She said. "A girl like you walking around at night is not safe. Avoid dark places and make sure that you won't entertain any strangers. " She warned me. I looked back at her. There was a hard look in her eyes that made me shiver.
I stood there waiting for her to say something more when I realized that she was only waiting for my reply. I tightened my hold on my bag and gave her a curt nod. "I will. Thank you, Mrs. Cauldron!" I licked my dry lips nervously and exited the library.
The cold fall air blasted me in the face the moment I got out of the school. It was freezing out here. Lucky for me that I was wearing a pullover to school today, or else I might shiver all the way back home."Yeesh! I just had to fall asleep in the library." I muttered to myself and pulled out my phone once again to check and see if my mom or dad called me.Nothing. Hopefully, they are still working. My father got a job here as a doctor in Oldridge Hospital. My mother also works there as a nurse.Yeah, my father is a doctor, and my mother is a nurse. I think we all can imagine how they met: One day, my mother accidentally stabbed her hand with a knife while handling it to the doctor, making them call another doctor – my dad – to mend her wounds. According to
"I like your smile." That one caught me off guard.I raised my eyes towards his face and arched an eyebrow at him. "Come again?" Is my hearing alright? Because I think I just heard him say something weird. The guy smirked and offered me his hand. "My name is Aelfric Beaumont. And I like your smile." He said again. What did he say? His name is Prick? Well, that's not cool.I took his hand in a shake. "Um...I'm...." I was about to say my name when I realized that I didn’t even know this guy. For all I know, he might not even go to our school. Heck, I don't even think I've seen him. Maybe he just moved here? In any case, I have to play it safe first. "My name is not important, but nice to meet you, Prick.""It's Aelfric."
The next day, I got up early and dressed for school. It was warm out, so I settled for a pale pink collar shirt and some boyfriend jeans, slipped on some white vans, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and I'm ready to go.I grabbed my backpack from the floor and headed to my desk to collect my homework. I arranged it and folded it in two before placing them between my trigonometry book, which is too big and heavy for its worth.I surveyed my room for one last time to make sure I had not forgotten a single thing.Happy with myself, I headed for my dresser and frowned when I saw the cracked mirror. I tapped it last night to prevent it from running even further and break the whole thing apart. But now that I am looking at it, I couldn't help but pity the state that it's in. I made a mental note that I would have its mirro
I grabbed my things from my locker and slammed it shut in my frustration. The second letter that I have from him is now crumpled in my fist. Does he think this is some romance crap where he would write me a love letter like some regular schoolboy confessing to a girl?Ha! If that's what he wants, I would gladly turn him down like a regular school girl.I will dump him hard!He better get ready and stays the heck away from me and my life so I can finally pee!I marched out into the football field. It was deserted and empty. Usually, it was full of jocks playing or hanging around. Today, it seemed like they just vanished.I walked and stood by the bleachers as I scanned the area and looked for any signs of lif
The day started out like any normal day – well at least that's what I hoped for.It was a Saturday, and I was having one of those weekends where I get up early even though I don't have school. I took out my phone, attached it to a speaker, and let some music play because I didn't feel like going back to sleep. As soon as I got my laptop, I started humming along to the song while searching YouTube for any fascinating culinary and baking videos. Seriously, some of the recipes are so good that I believe they should be released as a paperback. I was watching one of my favorite channels when I noticed a second voice singing along to the song.As I carefully turned my head to my window, I spotted Prick the hybrid outside humming the tune. Chills ran up my spine.Wh
"Hey." He said and waved casually while I was busy gaping at him in disbelief. What the hell is he doing here!? "You!" I screamed. I didn’t bother to hide the tone in my voice that was laced with fury."Me!" He repeated cheerfully and batted his eyelashes at me like a little girl peering at her doll. That gesture alone set my mood into a blazing ball of anger. I marched over to him in rage. I looked at the door lines and breathed out a sigh of relief when he hadn’t entered. For a moment, I feared that he might have been invited in by my dad, but that was thankfully not the case. "The hell are you doing here? Get out!""I haven't been in your house yet." He countered with a sly smirk."Then get the hell
Al watched me closely, and he started to laugh. "Angel, don't be too concerned about it. I will never harm or kill you. After all, you are my girl. But I'm afraid I can't make the same commitment to your parents. If I were you, I'd be a good girl, so they might survive the night. And the first step to that is by accepting this." He handed me the necklace again. "I want you to wear it." He commanded and placed the chain on my open palm. His brow furrowed when I didn't attempt to wear it.I closed my hands over the stupid necklace and clasped the chain around my neck. The smiley face emoji charm felt cold as it touched my bare skin. I hate it. Especially its mocking smile. He was doing this on purpose."Looks good on you. If only you could smile, though, which you couldn't. This charm should do the trick." Then he threw his head back and laughed again.
The following day my mom and dad kept interrogating me about the broken window, which I couldn't tell them was caused by their favorite boy - Al."Mom, I already told you," I said.My mom placed a hand on her hips. "You think your story about an idiotic bird running through your window would convince anyone?"I forked on my eggs with much force as I could. I thought about stabbing Al later when I see him."Respect your eggs, young lady. It's all where we come from." Said my dad at the end of the table. This is freaking annoying. If they only knew who caused that broken window!I mean, I can't just tell them, ‘Hey, remember that stupidly pretend nice guy Al? Yeah him. He brok
A young boy with brown hair and a combination of sea green and turquoise blue eyes walks in the wallway of their mansion. He was following a middle aged man while he was telling him about the history of their family. “I don’t understand why I have to learn about this.” The young boy says this while grumpily kicking the carpet. “Young Master Gabriel!” Rupert, the man that he was following and also the butler of their family, cast him a disapproving glare. “Please stop. You might hit and break something!” The boy rolls his eyes. He places his hands in his pockets with a huff. “Can we just skip this for some other time? I have football practice to attend to.” The butler raises a brow at him. “Didn’t your father ground you for three days because you hit someone?” “Just let me do anything other than give me a history lesson about the second Alpha! I mean, what’s so interesting about his story anyway?” Gabriel tried to keep his temper in check because his wolf might just decide to tak
Al barely looked up when Deindra leaps and morphs in the air, shifting into his wolf form to attack. Al barely managed to move and roll away when he landed, but that did not stop Deindra when he runs to chase Al and aimed for his throat. Al raised his paw to protect his neck from getting bitten, but ended up with a bleeding leg. He screams in pain and stands up on his back legs to swipe Deindra’s wolf with his other front paw. As an alpha wolf, there’s no doubt that Al is bigger than Deindra. Even though he is weak, his hits still pack a punch and Deindra released his hold on Al’s paw. Al could have ended it right there, but I guess the delirium that he got from the pain was still in effect because he started to become whoozy. I made a mistake. I was wrong to believe that Al could have handled the situation. We failed to consider the after effects that the curse would cause him. I shouldn’t have listened to him. It doesn’t matter. It has already passed. The only thing that I can
Their worried looks frightened me long before I felt Deindra grab me from behind. His grip on my wrist was so tight that I teared up a bit at the pressure. “I greet thee, Alpha Aelfric Beaumont. This humble beta wolf welcomes you.” “Fuck you.” Al straight up raised his middle finger at his old beta. The distaste in his eyes were so clear when he addressed Deindra. “Stop calling yourself beta when you only got that place because of your father. It was his last request that I chose to grant. If it were up to me, I would have picked a different beta. Someone who isn’t a spoiled wanna be alpha.” Al smirked. “I let you play alpha for a while, but now that I am back, you retaliate and cry like a baby.” Deindra’s growl almost burst my eardrum, making me wince. I really hope that Al will stop teasing him, especially when his beta has me captive. “But you won’t be Alpha for long, you know.” A cocky grin spreads across Al’s lips. “Are you going to challenge me for the position?” His eyes mo
I felt relieved when I saw Tyrelle standing before us, but it was soon dismissed when I saw the look on his face. It was a mixture torn between anger and regret. “How long have you been hiding, pup?” Al broke the awkward silence by asking him a question. “Enough to hear your sappy backstory.” I am guessing that it was supposed to sound insulting, but the right tone just wasn’t there. In fact, he sounds more sorry than insulting Al. He sighs. “I guess you were not behind her kidnapping, huh.” “You got that right.” Tyrelle must not have liked the arrogance in Al’s voice because this time he starts to frown. He marched over to us until he was just a few meters away from Al and I. “That’s nice and all, but I’ll be taking Gabriella home now.” Tyrelle looks at me, and his expression softens when he smiles. Home. The sound of it just reminded me of my parents. “Tyrelle, how are my parents?” “They’re doing fine. They’re worried. The whole pack is looking for you.” He starts to of
Getting chased by wolves should be something that I should be all too familiar with by now. I know that it is kind of sad that I have such a thought, but the world that I am living in isn’t exactly that kind either. I hear the wolf closing in behind me, and this time, I know that I have to act on my own. One of them almost got to me, but I was able to blast it off with a strong gust of wind just enough to send the wolf flying out of my range. There’s no way that I'm going to outrun the wolves. I’m just a mere human - or witch - running in the woods, which is their turf, barefooted. I turned around and waved my hand, sending a cutting beam of light that knocked a branch to the ground and blocked their path. At least that bought me some time. I never thought that there were this many wolves who were against Al as a leader. I know that I have heard a few wolves outside of my room, but not more than a dozen! My feet were bleeding as I climbed a muddy slope. Rocks and branches had pie
I was chained and bound to the bed when I regained consciousness. Not only that, but I was even blindfolded. Doctor Kusher really knows how to use my limitations to his advantage. He knows that I have trouble using my magic if I can’t see. Since I have no sense of time here because there’s no window and I am usually blindfolded or shrouded in darkness. My only update on the outside world is Julie. She’s usually the one who would give me updates, as she’s the only one that’s assigned to feed me during meals. According to her, Tyrelle is already aware of my disappearance and has his whole pack looking for me. According to her, their first suspect is Al and his pack, which will undoubtedly lead to a pack war soon. I wanted to ask her about my parents, but I did not want to talk to her because I was angry at her betrayal. Hell, I literally can’t even look at her because I am blindfolded! “Gabriella, you can’t ignore me forever.” She says. Her voice is low, like she has regrets. “Ple
I woke up in a room that I didn’t recognize. It’s a room with no windows, only a singular door right before the bed that I was sleeping in. I got out of bed immediately and started to look around. I was trying to convince myself not to panic as I headed back to the bed to recall what happened. I looked down at my pajamas and I suddenly remembered how I saw a strange man in my room before everything went dark. I suddenly hugged myself when I shivered out of fear. I was kidnapped. There’s no doubt about that, but the only question I have right now is why? What do these people want with me? I pushed the questions back while I started to head to the door and grabbed the doorknob. I should just ponder my questions later. Right now, I should gather whatever information that I can find inside and outside of this room. There’s really nothing much here aside from a closet, a chair, and a single wooden bed. There was one thing that I did find in the closet, and it was a bathrobe. I wasn’t c
Since Al left, I have been feeling burdened by unwanted feelings. I was angry, but at the same time, I was sad and hurt. Those were troubling feelings that burdened my chest so much that I had to distract myself. For the past few days, I have focused intently on learning magic. I broadened my imagination to the point that I could easily manipulate the stream of my powers. Tyrelle hasn’t spoken to me about the events of that day, which I dearly appreciated. Julie, when she found out, wasn’t that thrilled. She was angry to the point where she told me that we should kill Aelfric for his deceit. It was a side of her that I could barely recognize because it was so out of character for her. It scared me, but I did not make any comment about it. “When will you travel back abroad?” Tyrelle and I are in a yogurt shop and eating massive servings of yogurt. Unlike before, we aren’t hanging out like this because we’re trying to fool anyone. It’s just two friends hanging out and talking after s
“That’s it, Gabriella. Your magic is improving and growing stronger.” Doctor Kusher applauds me while I set the levitated books down. I turn to him gratefully. “Thank you, doctor Kusher.” “You seem rather cheerful these days as well.” He noted. “Yes, I am trying to practice how to smile these days.” I confirm. I am still not used to expressing joy on my face because of years of trying to hide it. “I see.” He chuckles. “It’s good to see you smile, so it won’t worry Master Tyrelle.” I look at him oddly. “Worried? Why would he be worried?” Doctor Kusher looks at me with wide and worried eyes. “I’m sorry, but didn’t Master Tyrelle tell you?” “Tell me what?” I suddenly feel a little nervous because Doctor Kusher seems a little troubled. “Well,” He scratches the back of his head and tries to look away and change the topic. “I think it is about time that we end this lesson-” “Doctor Kusher, what is it that you’re not telling me?” I urged him to talk.Doctor Kusher hesitates, but a
