"I like your smile." That one caught me off guard.
I raised my eyes towards his face and arched an eyebrow at him. "Come again?" Is my hearing alright? Because I think I just heard him say something weird.
The guy smirked and offered me his hand. "My name is Aelfric Beaumont. And I like your smile." He said again.
What did he say? His name is Prick? Well, that's not cool.
I took his hand in a shake. "Um...I'm...." I was about to say my name when I realized that I didn’t even know this guy. For all I know, he might not even go to our school. Heck, I don't even think I've seen him. Maybe he just moved here? In any case, I have to play it safe first. "My name is not important, but nice to meet you, Prick."
"It's Aelfric."
"Elfprick."
"AelFRIC."
"Alstrick."
"Eil." He pronounced and motioned for me to follow.
"Eil." I repeated.
"Frik."
"Freak."
Prick sighed and shook his head. "Never mind. Just call me Al."
"Okay, Freak." I said.
Al facepalmed at me and glided his hand across his face in frustration. "Well, it doesn't matter." He muttered and before I could react, he snatched my hands and drew me close. "You, whatever your name is, I really really like that smile of yours. It's pretty."
I was getting nervous and uncomfortable with this person that I only gulped and nodded. "Thanks?"
He continued. "It has that murderous intent. It looks bloodthirsty and misery and everything dark that I like all combined into one. Dark, destruction, world domination, I love it. The sweet cry of a baby, the horrible squeak of a butchered wolf. It's everything!" I made a face at him upon hearing his words.
This guy is a lunatic! Even more of a lunatic that he doesn't even fear my smile! I have to get out of here. "I-I really should get going now." I tried to get away from him, but his grip was too firm.
"I want you." He said.
I paused from my struggle as my middle finger immediately showed itself to him. "What?" My face was dead serious with disgust.
He smiled this time. It was not an ordinary smile, I tell you. There were fangs!! "Be my girlfriend." I did not focus on his words. Instead, I focused on his fangs. They were sharp as a canine. No, not a canine because they were too pointed and thinner than a dog's teeth.
Could it be? He's...
"A VAMPIRE!!" I screamed, and on instinct, I inserted two fingers in his nostrils and head-butted him. The guy's hold on me finally loosened.
I should have run then and there, but my head throbbed when I made contact with his head. I suddenly felt a little dizzy and sat on the ground.
"Are you okay?" Al crouched in front of me, looking like nothing happened. It would seem that it hurt me more than it hurt him. I suddenly got my bearings back, and I backpedaled to put distance between us. "Stay back! Get away from me!!"
Al gave me a look of utter confusion. "What? You see me as a vampire, and you scream? I saw you with a murderous smile, and I did not react the way that you did."
"Bu-But you're a vampire!! Far more dangerous than my smile!!" I argued.
Al threw his head back and laughed. "Sweetheart, I am not just a vampire. I am a vampire-werewolf hybrid." He said proudly with a wink.
A vampire-werewolf, he says.
"Step away from me!" I got up and hit his face with my bag when I noticed him walking in my direction again.
After I hit him, I turned around and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I don't know how far I've gone and how much distance have I drawn between us. I dare to turn my head around only to find out that he was gone.
Good. Maybe he left, or I outrun him.
My heartbeat started to slow down in relief, but my nerves were still on alert as I started walking again. I suddenly hit something in front of me, making me lose my balance and fall. I mean, I would have fallen if solid pairs of arms had not stopped me.
"What the heck is wrong with you? Watch where you are going. You could have hit a post." A voice scolded me, making me look up. "And what are you running away from?" Blood drained from my face when I realized who it was.
Al. Al was in front of me. How the heck did that happen! I screamed again. Louder this time. He flinched. "You humans should stop it with the screams." He complained about a hiss. I pushed him away and stomped his foot for good measure before I made my escape.
I ran again. Turning around the corner and almost breathed out a sigh of relief when I saw a typical two-storey house with a blue roof about 10 meters or so from where I am. I quickly doubled my pace and finally reached the doorstep. I shuffled my bag as I tried to find my keys.
"Where is it?!" I rummaged through my bag and felt the familiar metal. "Ah-ha!" Once I found it, I was about to insert it into the keyhole when someone spoke behind me.
"So this is where you live, huh?"
I turned around only to find that Al guy standing behind me. My jaw dropped at the sight of him. He cast a glance at me, smiled, and gave me a wink. His hands were on his hips as he examined my house.
I stood there. I was still gawking with my beating heart. I was terrified of this creature in front of me, especially since he freaking followed me. Worse? He now knows where I live!!
He regarded me for a while and must have seen the look of utter disbelief on my face because he started to talk. "You can never harm or outrun a werewolf or a vampire, doll. Our body is stronger than you think – Gah!!"
I cut him off, and I pulled my knee up and hit him between the legs. A look of pain registered on his face, and I could help but feel a little satisfied. I always wondered in fictional books if vampires or werewolves would feel pain if they were hit in their birdies. It turns out they do hurt. I always thought that it would be like steel or something and that it would hurt me more than it would hurt them. Ha! They have a sensitive part, after all.
Taking that chance, I unlocked the door and stepped inside to the safety of the house before I slammed the door to his face.
I turned around once again to look through the door hole. I expected to see him still there holding his golden jewel, but he was already gone.
Good riddance.
"Gabriella?" I jumped and turned around to the person who spoke. It was my mother coming out of our kitchen. She's already in her nightgown, and her black was wet. I could only assume that she just came out of the shower.
"Hey, mom. Sorry, I'm late. Is dad here?" I asked.
"Yes, he just went to bed." My mom answered.
Hearing that good news, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. With so much happening to me today, I don't want to think of mom and dad coming home before me, especially since there is a lunatic who just followed me home.
"Honey? Honey!" My mother started calling me again. I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at her. She narrowed her gaze at me as if she could tell that something wasn't right.
"Are you okay? You seem pale."
"I-I'm fine!" I said and pretended to yawn. "Just a little tired from running – I mean – school." I corrected myself quickly. I need to start acting like an ordinary teenage girl and learn how to lie.
"Did something happen at school?" She asked worriedly.
I shook my head. "Nope." Now that's one I can answer honestly because nothing happened at school. It happened after school. In any case, my mom's scrutinizing gaze was too much for me to handle that I let out a yawn again and rubbed my eyes for good measure. "I'm kind of tired right now, mom. Can we have this conversation some other time?" Like never?
I was already heading upstairs when she said, "What about dinner?"
"I already ate!" More like I don't have the appetite to eat.
I stormed to my room and met my beige painted walls, gray carpeted floor, and a single window with a window seat.
I have a bookshelf at the far right corner of my room and a hammock at the far left near my window for some relaxing time or someplace where I can read. Just beside my hammock is my white two-person bed which now has those ombre sheets that I bought at a sale on some online shop.
Above that is a painting of a pretty ballerina in a swan dress that my mother hung for decoration. Beside my bed is my white side table with an unlit candle, my laptop, and a book I almost finished reading. To the left of that is my bathroom. At the right of me is a door where I keep my clothes, and just beside it is a white full-length mirror that you can open and store your jewelry – I don't even own that much jewelry, to begin with.
Finally, besides the said mirror is a dresser that my mother put a week after we moved, and she filled it with strange things that you put on your face.
I dropped my bag on the floor and threw myself on my bed lazily. I kicked off my shoes and socks before rolling onto my back to stare at the ceiling.
I took a pillow and buried it to my face as I let out all of my frustration to it. Why?! What just happened to me back there? Am I going crazy? I mean, you don't just scare people away and have the guy you rescued thank you and turn out to be this vampire-werewolf mojo, ask you out, and follow you home. It's just too freaky!
But despite all of that, I have something in my mind that struck me as the oddest thing I have ever heard.
‘I like your smile.’
Ha! Like my smile? Only a psychopath would say that – which I think that Prick guy is. But still, it was the first time anyone had ever said it to me.
Could it be that this killer smile of mine is slowly diminishing?
Curious about my thoughts, I got up from my bed and headed towards my dresser. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I'm half Asian - a side that comes from my mom, so my eyes are a little sleek. My other feature comes from my father - a Canadian who grew up in America. Brown hair with golden highlights at the end, gray eyes so light that they look like white, thick eyebrows, normal-sized nose, pale skin, high cheekbones, and lips that badly needed a scrub and some color.
Not ugly and not that pretty either. Not bright and not dumb. Not skinny and not fat. Not tall and not short. That's me. I stared at my reflection a little longer. It was not out of vanity but out of curiosity. I bit my lower lips as I thought about what I was going to do.
‘I really really like that smile of yours. It's pretty.’
I don't know why those words kept repeating themselves in my mind. Perhaps it was something that I only imagined that I would hear in real life, but now that it happened, I am suddenly curious about what I look like when I smile.
It has been years since I smiled, and I don't know how I managed that.
Slowly, I lifted the corners of my lips and into a smile. The moment that I did it, I wanted to scream at my reflection.
Nope. I haven't changed a bit.
I still look like a murderer who hunts innocent kids.
I still look like Snow White's stepmother becoming that old hag.
I still look like the Wicked Witch of the West.
I still look like a dying cow.
I still look like Shrek.
And any other horrible people or villains with a horrible smile. But my smile is more fatal than theirs will ever be.
And you know what the worst part is? On the mirror of my dresser, just the top right corner, a tincy wincy little hair just appeared.
The mirror freaking cracked!!
I have gone worse. That stupid psychopath. Either he's out of his mind, or he's just blind because he was lying about that pretty part.
Now, I have seven years of bad luck ahead of me.
The next day, I got up early and dressed for school. It was warm out, so I settled for a pale pink collar shirt and some boyfriend jeans, slipped on some white vans, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and I'm ready to go.I grabbed my backpack from the floor and headed to my desk to collect my homework. I arranged it and folded it in two before placing them between my trigonometry book, which is too big and heavy for its worth.I surveyed my room for one last time to make sure I had not forgotten a single thing.Happy with myself, I headed for my dresser and frowned when I saw the cracked mirror. I tapped it last night to prevent it from running even further and break the whole thing apart. But now that I am looking at it, I couldn't help but pity the state that it's in. I made a mental note that I would have its mirro
I grabbed my things from my locker and slammed it shut in my frustration. The second letter that I have from him is now crumpled in my fist. Does he think this is some romance crap where he would write me a love letter like some regular schoolboy confessing to a girl?Ha! If that's what he wants, I would gladly turn him down like a regular school girl.I will dump him hard!He better get ready and stays the heck away from me and my life so I can finally pee!I marched out into the football field. It was deserted and empty. Usually, it was full of jocks playing or hanging around. Today, it seemed like they just vanished.I walked and stood by the bleachers as I scanned the area and looked for any signs of lif
The day started out like any normal day – well at least that's what I hoped for.It was a Saturday, and I was having one of those weekends where I get up early even though I don't have school. I took out my phone, attached it to a speaker, and let some music play because I didn't feel like going back to sleep. As soon as I got my laptop, I started humming along to the song while searching YouTube for any fascinating culinary and baking videos. Seriously, some of the recipes are so good that I believe they should be released as a paperback. I was watching one of my favorite channels when I noticed a second voice singing along to the song.As I carefully turned my head to my window, I spotted Prick the hybrid outside humming the tune. Chills ran up my spine.Wh
"Hey." He said and waved casually while I was busy gaping at him in disbelief. What the hell is he doing here!? "You!" I screamed. I didn’t bother to hide the tone in my voice that was laced with fury."Me!" He repeated cheerfully and batted his eyelashes at me like a little girl peering at her doll. That gesture alone set my mood into a blazing ball of anger. I marched over to him in rage. I looked at the door lines and breathed out a sigh of relief when he hadn’t entered. For a moment, I feared that he might have been invited in by my dad, but that was thankfully not the case. "The hell are you doing here? Get out!""I haven't been in your house yet." He countered with a sly smirk."Then get the hell
Al watched me closely, and he started to laugh. "Angel, don't be too concerned about it. I will never harm or kill you. After all, you are my girl. But I'm afraid I can't make the same commitment to your parents. If I were you, I'd be a good girl, so they might survive the night. And the first step to that is by accepting this." He handed me the necklace again. "I want you to wear it." He commanded and placed the chain on my open palm. His brow furrowed when I didn't attempt to wear it.I closed my hands over the stupid necklace and clasped the chain around my neck. The smiley face emoji charm felt cold as it touched my bare skin. I hate it. Especially its mocking smile. He was doing this on purpose."Looks good on you. If only you could smile, though, which you couldn't. This charm should do the trick." Then he threw his head back and laughed again.
The following day my mom and dad kept interrogating me about the broken window, which I couldn't tell them was caused by their favorite boy - Al."Mom, I already told you," I said.My mom placed a hand on her hips. "You think your story about an idiotic bird running through your window would convince anyone?"I forked on my eggs with much force as I could. I thought about stabbing Al later when I see him."Respect your eggs, young lady. It's all where we come from." Said my dad at the end of the table. This is freaking annoying. If they only knew who caused that broken window!I mean, I can't just tell them, ‘Hey, remember that stupidly pretend nice guy Al? Yeah him. He brok
"Err....." I looked awkwardly to the side to avoid the new kid’s gaze. What does he want from me? He was giving me an intense look that made me feel uncomfortable in my seat."Gabriella." He says.I was surprised and yet curious about how he knew my name that I stuttered. "W-What?" Maybe I was just hearing things. No way can he know my name. Unless he asked someone about it."The killer smile. I am looking for a girl named Gabriella the killer smile." He saidI stared at him. I was trying to figure out if he was serious. But one look on his face, he is."I asked almost everyone in this room where I could find this Gabriella girl and they all pointed in your direction. I assume that you know who she is?" He raised
Run, Gabriella, run! Run as fast as those little legs can. I screamed in my head, willing myself to put as much distance to myself and those weirdos. My heart pounded fast in my chest. Adrenaline pushing me forward until I reach my house.I hastily got my keys out and opened the door, got in, and locked it behind me. Only then was I able to relax. “Home.....safe....” I breathed out. “I hope I lost them.”“I believe so. With my punch and how fast you ran, I doubt that he was able to follow us.”“Hm...yeah, I did run really fast,” I said, feeling proud of myself as I laughed. Only when I heard another laugh did I realize I wasn’t alone. With a gasp, I quickly spun and saw
A young boy with brown hair and a combination of sea green and turquoise blue eyes walks in the wallway of their mansion. He was following a middle aged man while he was telling him about the history of their family. “I don’t understand why I have to learn about this.” The young boy says this while grumpily kicking the carpet. “Young Master Gabriel!” Rupert, the man that he was following and also the butler of their family, cast him a disapproving glare. “Please stop. You might hit and break something!” The boy rolls his eyes. He places his hands in his pockets with a huff. “Can we just skip this for some other time? I have football practice to attend to.” The butler raises a brow at him. “Didn’t your father ground you for three days because you hit someone?” “Just let me do anything other than give me a history lesson about the second Alpha! I mean, what’s so interesting about his story anyway?” Gabriel tried to keep his temper in check because his wolf might just decide to tak
Al barely looked up when Deindra leaps and morphs in the air, shifting into his wolf form to attack. Al barely managed to move and roll away when he landed, but that did not stop Deindra when he runs to chase Al and aimed for his throat. Al raised his paw to protect his neck from getting bitten, but ended up with a bleeding leg. He screams in pain and stands up on his back legs to swipe Deindra’s wolf with his other front paw. As an alpha wolf, there’s no doubt that Al is bigger than Deindra. Even though he is weak, his hits still pack a punch and Deindra released his hold on Al’s paw. Al could have ended it right there, but I guess the delirium that he got from the pain was still in effect because he started to become whoozy. I made a mistake. I was wrong to believe that Al could have handled the situation. We failed to consider the after effects that the curse would cause him. I shouldn’t have listened to him. It doesn’t matter. It has already passed. The only thing that I can
Their worried looks frightened me long before I felt Deindra grab me from behind. His grip on my wrist was so tight that I teared up a bit at the pressure. “I greet thee, Alpha Aelfric Beaumont. This humble beta wolf welcomes you.” “Fuck you.” Al straight up raised his middle finger at his old beta. The distaste in his eyes were so clear when he addressed Deindra. “Stop calling yourself beta when you only got that place because of your father. It was his last request that I chose to grant. If it were up to me, I would have picked a different beta. Someone who isn’t a spoiled wanna be alpha.” Al smirked. “I let you play alpha for a while, but now that I am back, you retaliate and cry like a baby.” Deindra’s growl almost burst my eardrum, making me wince. I really hope that Al will stop teasing him, especially when his beta has me captive. “But you won’t be Alpha for long, you know.” A cocky grin spreads across Al’s lips. “Are you going to challenge me for the position?” His eyes mo
I felt relieved when I saw Tyrelle standing before us, but it was soon dismissed when I saw the look on his face. It was a mixture torn between anger and regret. “How long have you been hiding, pup?” Al broke the awkward silence by asking him a question. “Enough to hear your sappy backstory.” I am guessing that it was supposed to sound insulting, but the right tone just wasn’t there. In fact, he sounds more sorry than insulting Al. He sighs. “I guess you were not behind her kidnapping, huh.” “You got that right.” Tyrelle must not have liked the arrogance in Al’s voice because this time he starts to frown. He marched over to us until he was just a few meters away from Al and I. “That’s nice and all, but I’ll be taking Gabriella home now.” Tyrelle looks at me, and his expression softens when he smiles. Home. The sound of it just reminded me of my parents. “Tyrelle, how are my parents?” “They’re doing fine. They’re worried. The whole pack is looking for you.” He starts to of
Getting chased by wolves should be something that I should be all too familiar with by now. I know that it is kind of sad that I have such a thought, but the world that I am living in isn’t exactly that kind either. I hear the wolf closing in behind me, and this time, I know that I have to act on my own. One of them almost got to me, but I was able to blast it off with a strong gust of wind just enough to send the wolf flying out of my range. There’s no way that I'm going to outrun the wolves. I’m just a mere human - or witch - running in the woods, which is their turf, barefooted. I turned around and waved my hand, sending a cutting beam of light that knocked a branch to the ground and blocked their path. At least that bought me some time. I never thought that there were this many wolves who were against Al as a leader. I know that I have heard a few wolves outside of my room, but not more than a dozen! My feet were bleeding as I climbed a muddy slope. Rocks and branches had pie
I was chained and bound to the bed when I regained consciousness. Not only that, but I was even blindfolded. Doctor Kusher really knows how to use my limitations to his advantage. He knows that I have trouble using my magic if I can’t see. Since I have no sense of time here because there’s no window and I am usually blindfolded or shrouded in darkness. My only update on the outside world is Julie. She’s usually the one who would give me updates, as she’s the only one that’s assigned to feed me during meals. According to her, Tyrelle is already aware of my disappearance and has his whole pack looking for me. According to her, their first suspect is Al and his pack, which will undoubtedly lead to a pack war soon. I wanted to ask her about my parents, but I did not want to talk to her because I was angry at her betrayal. Hell, I literally can’t even look at her because I am blindfolded! “Gabriella, you can’t ignore me forever.” She says. Her voice is low, like she has regrets. “Ple
I woke up in a room that I didn’t recognize. It’s a room with no windows, only a singular door right before the bed that I was sleeping in. I got out of bed immediately and started to look around. I was trying to convince myself not to panic as I headed back to the bed to recall what happened. I looked down at my pajamas and I suddenly remembered how I saw a strange man in my room before everything went dark. I suddenly hugged myself when I shivered out of fear. I was kidnapped. There’s no doubt about that, but the only question I have right now is why? What do these people want with me? I pushed the questions back while I started to head to the door and grabbed the doorknob. I should just ponder my questions later. Right now, I should gather whatever information that I can find inside and outside of this room. There’s really nothing much here aside from a closet, a chair, and a single wooden bed. There was one thing that I did find in the closet, and it was a bathrobe. I wasn’t c
Since Al left, I have been feeling burdened by unwanted feelings. I was angry, but at the same time, I was sad and hurt. Those were troubling feelings that burdened my chest so much that I had to distract myself. For the past few days, I have focused intently on learning magic. I broadened my imagination to the point that I could easily manipulate the stream of my powers. Tyrelle hasn’t spoken to me about the events of that day, which I dearly appreciated. Julie, when she found out, wasn’t that thrilled. She was angry to the point where she told me that we should kill Aelfric for his deceit. It was a side of her that I could barely recognize because it was so out of character for her. It scared me, but I did not make any comment about it. “When will you travel back abroad?” Tyrelle and I are in a yogurt shop and eating massive servings of yogurt. Unlike before, we aren’t hanging out like this because we’re trying to fool anyone. It’s just two friends hanging out and talking after s
“That’s it, Gabriella. Your magic is improving and growing stronger.” Doctor Kusher applauds me while I set the levitated books down. I turn to him gratefully. “Thank you, doctor Kusher.” “You seem rather cheerful these days as well.” He noted. “Yes, I am trying to practice how to smile these days.” I confirm. I am still not used to expressing joy on my face because of years of trying to hide it. “I see.” He chuckles. “It’s good to see you smile, so it won’t worry Master Tyrelle.” I look at him oddly. “Worried? Why would he be worried?” Doctor Kusher looks at me with wide and worried eyes. “I’m sorry, but didn’t Master Tyrelle tell you?” “Tell me what?” I suddenly feel a little nervous because Doctor Kusher seems a little troubled. “Well,” He scratches the back of his head and tries to look away and change the topic. “I think it is about time that we end this lesson-” “Doctor Kusher, what is it that you’re not telling me?” I urged him to talk.Doctor Kusher hesitates, but a
