Eden stared at the ceiling of her room, lying on the bed with her hands and legs lying limp on the soft bedsheet. She kept thinking about what happened a week ago in the penthouse. It was established at that point that she cannot kidnap anyone else, she had learned the lesson. Sophia was still not talking to her and Natalia was still freaked out and acting distant from everyone. Only Grace understood what this meant for Eden. She would either have to marry Carter or run away and give up all the luxury that was so dear to her.
Eden recalls her phone call conversation with Grace a day ago.
‘It can’t be that bad, you’ll just have to bear the old sack until he dies and then you will basically be a queen,’ said Grace.
‘If you know me at all, you know I will never give my father the satisfaction of making me waste my life on someone I don’t love,’ Eden replied. ‘Besides I don’t want the entire world to think that I am a gold digger.’
‘Which you actually are,’ Grace said jokingly.
‘Bitch, I’m going to kill you.’
Grace chuckles but suddenly her tone changes.
‘What are we supposed to do if the Masons call us for the favour we owe them?’ Grace asked, her voice glum and scared.
‘I have no idea what we’ll do. It’s possible they might ask us for sexual favors.’
‘Or to murder someone.’
‘Or rob a bank.’
‘We’re screwed aren’t we?’
‘Royally screwed.’
Eden squirms at the thought of doing something like that for the Masons. She needed to think about something else, to rid her mind of all the stress. She gets up and walks over to her guitar, an acoustic beauty that her mother gifted her when she was 5. Her mother, Martha Brown, was divorced by her father when she was six years old. Alfred had discovered that Martha had cheated on him multiple times throughout their marriage, even after Eden was born.
He told her that her mother was a chronic alcoholic too and tried to abuse her many times but was stopped by him. Eden does not have the best memory of her but she always remembered her being sweet to her and she does not trust her father anyway. However, after the divorce, Alfred got full custody of Eden on the grounds that Martha was unfit for raising a child owing to her unhealthy drinking habits.
Eden starts strumming her guitar, humming along to the tune of the song Colors by Halsey.
You're dripping like a saturated sunrise
You're spilling like an overflowing sink
You're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece
And now you're tearing through the pages and the ink-
Eden’s song is interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She walks over to her bed, picks up the phone, and looks at the caller ID. It said ‘Private Number’. She had been anticipating this call but she did not know it would be so soon.
She picks up the call and hears the familiar, deep voice.
“Good afternoon, Miss Brown. This is your ex-captive speaking. How are you doing on this lovely day?”
“Cut to the crap Mason, why have you called me?” Eden snapped at him.
“Touché. Fine, I call to redeem the favour that you owe me.”
Oh boy, here it comes.
“I believe it will benefit you just the same as it would for me.”
Eden, more curious now, stayed silent, cueing him to go on.
“How about we chat about this over some evening tea? I will send a car at 5:00 PM sharp, wear something nice.”
“Sorry, I’m not in Los Angeles right now, I’m visiting my grandmother in San Diego,” Eden lies through her teeth.
“Oh. That’s too bad. I’m sending a car anyway in case your Grandmother doesn’t come back from there and moves to San Diego from Florida, where she has lived her entire life,” said Bennett. Eden could hear the smile on his face as he spoke. “I did my research. Even if you were not lying, my private jet would pick you up from San Diego because this is urgent. Be ready at 5.”
With that, he hangs up the call, leaving Eden bewildered.
He found out about my deceased Grandmother too?! And ‘wear something nice’?
At 5, Eden put on a grey sweatshirt, a pair of old baggy jeans, and some worn-out flip-flops. Ah yes, this is just fine.
Eden walked out to see a black Range Rover in front of her house. Sighing deeply, she walked over to it and got in. Throughout the whole ride, Eden thought of all the possible favours he could ask her, some of which made her shudder. She mentally prepared herself, reassuring herself that after she gets it over with he would not bother her anymore.
In about 15 minutes, the driver pulls into the parking lot of one of the most expensive apartment complexes in the city, HWH Luxury Living. She is escorted by the driver straight to Bennett Mason’s apartment.
When she walks into the room, she sees Bennett standing there with a smile, ready to greet her. She did not like the way how happy he looked. He was wearing a white plaid shirt and black pants, with the shirt being transparent enough for Eden to make out the outline of his abs. She tears her eyes away from his torso to his face, and she could not deny that he looked extremely handsome, which she had not noticed when they were in the penthouse
He walks over to her and plants a kiss on her cheek, placing his hand on the small of her waist. She is immediately reminded of the kiss that they shared at the party and she jerks away from him. He pulls his hands away, making a gesture of giving up. He motions her to sit on the couch and seats himself across her.
“Just cut to the crap, no bullshitting, and just name whatever it is that you want,” Eden says, not wanting to stay too long.
“Marry me.”
“Marry me.”Eden was too shocked to say anything. Did he really ask me to marry him?“Don’t get flattered Miss Brown, it’s not like I like you romantically. After what you did, I should be disgusted by you.”“But you’re not. Why aren’t you?” Eden asked, her brain unable to process the situation completely.“You’re really beautiful.”What is even happening?“And young and rich. I need you to be my wife. I can assure you that I have no sexual or romantic intentions. This is nothing more than a temporary solution to both our problems. If I recall correctly, you wanted to marry me too, yes?”Eden could not believe how well this had worked out, but she felt humiliated that things did not go the way she had planned, she wanted to be in control. She felt a surge of anger about the fact that she is the one who is being blackmailed into getting married. She knew well that if she refused, Bennett could easily expose her and ruin her reputation. “Why do you want to marry me? You know my issues,
Like hell, I am going to think about this. How dare he insult me like that. I don't care if I go to jail, at least I won’t be marrying this motherfu-Eden’s thoughts are cut short when a young but tall and muscular man, dressed in all black steps in front of Eden, stopping her from exiting the building of Mason’s apartment complex. She swallows and tilts her head upwards to look at the man’s face. He was the same man who picked her up from her home. She vividly remembered someone of his stature entering the penthouse before she went unconscious.“And what do you think you are doing?” Asks Eden.“Don’t you need a ride home, Miss?” the man asked. His nametag read Buddy.“Listen Buddy boy, if you do not get out of my way this instant you will be the one needing a ride to the hospital.”Buddy’s eyes were hidden under black sunglasses, but Eden could tell they were amused. He smiled and moved aside, motioning her to go ahead. She walks out of the building and towards the main road to catch
“He asked you to marry him?” Grace asks, befuddles. “Why would he do that?”“It’s supposed to help him with business or something, but that’s not important. He does not want any sort of romantic strings attached, it’ll all be just on paper,” Eden replied and then explained what Bennett had told her. She walks back to the bathtub and submerges herself once again.“Well, that worked out beautifully. Wasn’t that your goal all along?”“Yes but….” Eden couldn’t think of a single reason why she should not do this.“But?” Grace urged.“I don’t know, Grace,” Eden says, tracing her finger around the outline of her knee peeking out of the water.“Did he do something to you? Do you have any reason to think that he might hurt you?”“No, in fact, he has been nice to me, except he thinks that I am stupid,” Eden replies.“I don’t see that a problem. I mean it is perfectly valid why he would think that. What we did was pretty stupid,” Grace chuckled. “But it does not mean that he wants to harm you. H
“You took your sweet time. You know I barely have time to even sit idle for a minute,” said Alfred Brown, not looking at Eden as she walked down the stairs. “Oh, I’m sorry I thought that you being unavailable for almost the entirety of my life meant you can handle my absence for a few more minutes,” Eden smiled sarcastically.“I am not here to play games. Take a seat this is important,” Alfred’s voice had no emotion, he simply did not care for being there longer than it needed to be.“Lovely as ever, Dad.”Alfred kept staring at his phone until Eden was seated across from him on the couch. He kept his phone in the pocket of his expensive Armani suit, now staring directly at Eden, who sat with her arms crossed, awaiting whatever absurd order he was about to give her.“I am here to make sure that we are on the same page regarding your marriage with Carter. I want no drama, no indecency, and no petty complaints from you,” said Alfred.Eden, at this point, had no hope that her father was
Grace’s Arc“Well, whatever you say, It’s Saturday night, so I better go find something sexy to wear, ugh. See ya,” Grace says to Eden and hung up.She walks into her walk-in closet to look for a dress to wear tonight. She was not very excited to meet Theo after what had happened. Sure he was a decent-looking, handsome man, but Grace knew that he was up to no good. She called her personal bodyguard and told him that she needed him to be extra alert tonight. Sebastian, her guard, was a strict and diligent man, Grace knew she could depend on him. Grace picked a light pink, sequin dress with thin straps. It fit her well enough to accentuate her curves perfectly. She did some light make-up, she didn’t need much, her face’s features were enough to make her look beautiful. She left her wavy hair loose and wore a black high-heeled stiletto. Let’s get this over with. She looked at the address of the club Theo had texted her. It was one of the most heavily packed clubs in the city. She was r
Grace’s ArcTheo did not want to let go of Grace. He had not intended for this to happen, he never wanted to make her feel like this was the only thing he wanted from her. He only wanted to see more of her, but apparently, his subconscious had other plans. He placed one hand on her waist, pulling her closer, and another on her cheek.Grace, too, had never imagined that this would happen. The day they had danced for the first time, Grace had felt a tinge of attraction for him but chose to ignore it for Eden’s sake. She was intoxicated not so much that she was out of her senses. She knew exactly what she was doing and it was her own will, or at least that’s what she thought, that made her fingers run through Theo’s thick brown hair and kiss him like it was the only thing in the world to do.Before either of them could go any further, Grace felt Theo pulling away from her. She opened her eyes to see why he was stopping, only he wasn’t. Sebastian, one of Grace’s guards had Theo in his hol
Bennett puts his hand around Eden’s shoulder and looks at her, smiling. “You want to tell it this time, babe?”Eden looked at him like she was going to swallow him whole. This goddamn piece of shit.“No, babe, I want you to tell it,” Grace fake smiled at Bennett.“Well alright then,” said Bennett and looked towards Alfred. “We met at a party for the first time. It was a mere coincidence that Eden decided to sit next to me. And well, I was absolutely intoxicated by her beauty, it was so addictive I felt like I was drugged, nearly lost all my senses. And then we got to know each other and fell in love. I’ll tell you, Mr. Brown, she really had me trapped the moment I met her.”Eden’s face was going red. He was indirectly talking about the kidnapping. “Oh, isn’t that so romantic,” Alfred commented. His eyes were glistening will happiness but all Eden saw were dollar signs instead of his pupils. “Eden, run along now. Let the men talk.”“What is it, the 18th Century?” chuckled Bennett and
Eden kept pacing around her room on Monday morning. She knew his father and Bennett were in a meeting at that exact moment. If the deal is off between the for some reason, she would be in a lot of trouble. What if I just steal some money and run from here? I am 18 now after all. But no, no my father will have the entire police department looking for me. I need to talk to Sophia, she always knows what to do.Grace picks up her phone and dials Sophia, hoping she was no longer mad at her.“What?” Sophia’s tone indicated she was clearly upset.“Man, you can’t seriously still be angry,” Eden whined.“Oh, yeah of course. Why would I be? It’s not like you almost got me killed.”“Oh come on. We’re all safe, aren’t we?” Eden was getting irritated at all the complaining, but she knew she had no place, knowing that she did get her in a lot of trouble. “Listen, all I need right now is your help. I promise there will be no more crazy schemes and dangerous plans. I am really stuck right now.”Soph
