"From now on, you're no longer a Guzman," Marlene Guzman announced in Abigail Guzman's face.
Abigail remained silent, only fixing her cold gaze at Marlene, the woman she had called Mom for the past 17 years.
Three days ago, by a strange twist of fate, Abigail was involved in an accident with a girl called Gina.
She nearly died in an effort to save Gina, who was later found to be Marlene's biological daughter, the real Miss Guzman.
But now, Marlene seemed to have completely forgotten Abigail's sacrifice, determined to kick her out to make way for Gina.
"Mom, don't be so hard on Abigail. We're rich. And it's reasonable that she doesn't wanna leave," said Gina.
"Are you done? If you are, I'm getting outta here." Abigail wasn't in the mood to listen to their cynical taunts.
She realized that the Guzmans didn't deserve her love and devotion.
Gina stepped forward, trying to stop Abigail from leaving.
Yet, what she actually did was whisper to Abigail triumphantly, "There's one thing I forgot to tell you about. Maximo and I had a wonderful night two days ago. We're planning to announce our engagement soon."
If Gina hadn't returned, Maximo Oconnor should have been Abigail's fiancé.
Abigail looked Gina dead in the eye and replied aloofly, "Oh, congrats. He's not my type anyway."
Gina paused, dumbfounded.
Obviously, she didn't expect such a cold response, as if her punch had just hit a pillow.
Abigail stared at Gina as if she was looking at a fool.
"About Maximo, feel free to keep him if you're into that loser."
With that, Abigail walked out of the gate, leaving everything behind.
Walking out of the Guzman's house, Abigail breathed a sigh of relief and put on a mask.
Then she turned and took one last glance at the house.
"Grandpa, I'm leaving today. And I won't hide my ability anymore. Will you be happy for me?"
The rustle of the wind was the only response she heard in the quiet surroundings.
Suddenly, a loud noise came.
Not far from her, a black car was parked askew on the street—it had a tire burst.
A man in a black tracksuit got out of the car, swaying on his feet. It seemed he was injured.
More than ten men were chasing after him, all of them in black.
Ronan Lucero glanced over his shoulder, his expression darkening, which only made him seem more imposing. He placed one hand over his belly, his lips devoid of color.
"Save it. We paid a high price to hunt you down. You're not getting away." The men in black closed in.
"You really think you can seize me?" Ronan narrowed his eyes, his tone icy.
The pain in his belly was so sharp that he felt like his consciousness was fading.
"We'll see," the leader said and lunged toward Ronan.
Just then, a cobblestone came out of nowhere and hit his hand. As soon as he felt the sharp pain between his thumb and his index finger, he fell to the ground.
The leader panicked and growled, "Who's there?"
Abigail's voice was devoid of emotions. "I'm in a bad mood, so I don't wanna watch people fight. Take it elsewhere before you continue."
All the men fixed their gazes on Abigail with a serious look on their faces.
Even Ronan's dark eyes showed a tinge of surprise.
He was being hunted by international killers, every one of whom was capable of fighting against ten men at the same time. Yet, this masked young lady had just taken one of them down with merely a cobblestone.
She was awesome.
"There would be consequences for being nosy," snapped the leader. Then he ordered his men in a low voice, "End her."
The rest of the killers dashed toward Abigail.
Her pupils shrank slightly, a cold glint in her eyes.
"Be careful." Ronan started moving before the killers reached Abigail.
Suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks, his dark eyes full of disbelief.
More than a dozen killers charged at her, yet none could strike a single attack before collapsing at Abigail's feet. She stood her ground firmly, unflinching, her gaze unwavering.
If her hand hadn't still been raised in the air, Ronan would have thought that the scene was his hallucination.
"Get lost." Abigail lifted her chin slightly, her tone chilling.
The killers looked at her as if she were a demon. "Who on earth are you? What did you do to us?"
However, they wouldn't hear the answer as they all passed out right after it.
Abigail looked down at them and then lifted her head to look at Ronan, who was standing not far away.
Ronan felt his heart skip a beat when he met her eyes.
Although he couldn't see her face under the mask, he was enchanted by her beautiful eyes, as bright as the moon.
Ronan reined in his thoughts and walked toward Abigail, speaking to her in a gentle tone, "Thank you. And I..."
Before Ronan could finish his words, he fell to the ground.
Abigail crouched down and lifted Ronan's shirt.
She had noticed that he was badly injured in the belly at first glance.
However, for her, dealing with it was a cinch.
She took out a tiny porcelain bottle from her bag and sprinkled the powder onto Ronan's wound. Then, she took a pill out of a second bottle and placed it in his mouth.
Had Ronan been conscious, he would have recognized the pill. It was the Heart Tonic Pill, the very one he had searched the world for.
After that, Abigail simply left him on the side of the street and walked away.
***
Days later.
Two men were standing at the turning corner outside of the Guzman's house.
Erickson, Lucero's assistant, was wearing a stylish suit and ear studs. He tilted his head and looked at his boss next to him. "Mr. Lucero, it's been two days. The girl never showed up. I don't think she will return here. Maybe we should just leave."
"I wanna wait a little longer." Lucero stared at the gate of Guzman's house with his narrowed eyes with a glint in his dark pupils.
Lucero was wearing a casual black outfit. The loose hair on his forehead covered his eyes, adding a tinge of rebellious aloofness to his handsome face.
"Please, Mr. Lucero. We'd better leave now, or you're gonna miss the engagement party with Miss Baldwin," Ryker got heated. "You were betrothed to her when you were little. Sir Lucero repeatedly warned us that nothing could go wrong at the engagement party, though he wouldn't be able to attend due to his poor health."
Ronan's lips curled into an indifferent smile. "The Baldwins haven't canceled the engagement?"
"Although you asked people to spread rumors about you being a violent hideous weirdo, you're from the most powerful family in town. Surely the Baldwins wouldn't dare to do so."
"I see." The light in Ronan's eyes dimmed.
Given Ronan's reaction, Ryker knew that Ronan had turned a deaf ear to his persuasion.
He swiftly decided to drop the topic. "Since we have no hope of finding your life-saver here, we should go. Once I find the legendary Heart Tonic Pill, Sir Lucero will be fine."
Ronan blinked and shot Ryker a pointed look. "Do you think you can find it?"
Ryker was annoyed by his retort, yet he couldn't think of a proper comeback.
After a while, he huffed, "Of course, I'll find it."
"Fine." Ronan didn't want to bicker with Ryker. He dropped his gaze and glanced at the Guzman's house before turning around. "Let's go."
"Mr. Lucero, where are we going?" Ryker asked.
Ronan smiled. "To cancel my engagement with Miss Baldwin."
Before Abigail left, she wanted to go to the hospital and visit her grandma Vanessa Guzman for the last time.In Ward 301 of the inpatient department in Shepard Hospital, a gray-haired old lady was lying in the hospital bed.Due to the torment of the disease, she looked pale and skinny. The wrinkles on her forehead made her look a bit more haggard. When Abigail opened the door and came in, Vanessa was still in a coma with her eyes closed. As Abigail walked to Vanessa's bedside on tiptoe, she couldn't help but feel sad.'Grandma used to be so energetic. Since when did she become so fragile?' she thought."Abigail." Randy Conrad, the young doctor who was rounding the ward, took a quick glance at her before continuing to write in the medical record. "You came just in time. We need to talk."He put away his pen, raised his amicable face, and stared straight at her with a pair of charming eyes."None of the current heart medications works for her. Increasing the dosage worked before, but n
Hearing this, several doctors who were in a state of desperation looked over."What do you know?" The male chief doctor didn't take Abigail seriously. "Sir Lucero's condition is very complicated. "Now they had no choice but to wait for his family to arrive.Abigail raised her eyebrows in doubt and asked lightly, "Rheumatic heart disease. Is it serious?""You can tell that just by a glimpse?" The doctor was surprised."Why bother arguing with that chick? When will Mr. Lucero arrive?" said Professor Kolten Hood, in his fifties, the best cardiologist in the hospital."In twenty minutes at least."Kolten thought about it. Irving Lucero couldn't afford to wait."Professor Hood, let's wait for Mr. Ronan Lucero." Georgia Riggs, a young deputy chief doctor tentatively said, "An unauthorized surgery would..."If something went wrong, Ronan would never let them get away.Seeing that Kolten didn't speak, Georgia simply acted as the "bad guy" and ordered the nurse at the side, "Go get the sedati
Eight cardiologists were behind him, all top figures in the industry.Ronan coldly looked at the chief surgeon in the operating room and asked, "Who is she?"She was wearing a medical mask, only revealing a pair of clear eyes.Strangely, her eyes seemed familiar to him."She is..."Kolten looked over, his heart racing. If he told the truth, Ronan might kill him right away.Ryker flew into a rage and snapped, "How can Shepard Hospital be so irresponsible? Does she even have a medical license or any related experience? Do you think whoever is bold enough can operate on Sir Lucero? What were you thinking about?""Mr. Erickson, please hear me out!"Kolten was so frightened that he felt limp all over, too nervous to say a single word. The other doctors in the observation room were all scared out of their wits.Although Georgia was trembling with terror, she bit the bullet and replied, "Dr. Randy Conrad said if anything happened to Sir Lucero, he would take full responsibility.""Nice try.
Abigail looked at him. His facial features seemed to be meticulously sculpted by the hands of some supernatural being because they were so perfect.More importantly, she seemed to have seen him before."Mr. Lucero, here's the thing. When Sir Lucero was critically ill, I boldly promised this lady a large amount of remuneration as long as she could save his life," Kolten hurriedly asked for a remuneration for Abigail.Ronan looked at her, a ripple of emotion in his eyes. Then, he glanced at Ryker.Ryker immediately took out a blank check, handed it over, and said, "Thank you for your help, Doctor! This is the reward from Mr. Lucero. You can fill in whatever amount you want."Abigail raised her bright eyes in surprise, wondering who the man was. She hadn't expected him to be so generous. The people around them all looked at her in shock and envy. After getting the blank check, she would earn more than just a large amount of money. The check was a token of Ronan's affirmation. So, she wou
"What's your name?" he asked. It was evident that he didn't usually speak much. Even his expression was as indifferent as his speech.Abigail responded confidently, "Abigail.""Please give me your phone number." Ronan handed out his phone, indicating for her to enter her number.Since Abigail accepted the blank check, she naturally understood what he meant. If there were any problems with Irving later, she would be responsible for handling them. He needed her contact information to find her in time.Taking the man's phone with her slender fingers, she typed a string of numbers. Then she looked up and returned the phone."Sir Lucero has undergone multiple thoracotomies, and early postoperative sternal instability can hinder healing. There may also be discomfort in his lower left limb due to repeated intubations during extracorporeal circulation. These are all normal phenomena."Telling him these conditions in advance would avoid future trouble.Ronan's eyes traced Abigail's facial feat
"Abby, here are scented tea, fruit, and snacks. Feel free to take whatever you want. Just help yourself. You're home now!" Kevin said dotingly.Abigail picked up the teacup and took a sip of the tea.Lauryn said with mixed feelings, " I never meant to lose you back then.""I know." Faced with her mother's sadness, Abigail felt touched. "How did you find me?""A while ago, the Guzmans issued a missing person notice, mentioning what happened back then. After an investigation, we found out that you are our daughter, and the daughter we have raised for eighteen years is not our biological daughter..."As she spoke, Lauryn shed tears. "I'm sorry, it's our fault that you ended up in someone else's home."Kevin also felt guilty. "It was my fault for being so confused back then and bringing Courtney home without investigating her background. This time, we also investigated her parentage. Her birth mother died in that big fire, and her father's whereabouts are unknown. So we want to discuss it
"How about this pair?" Kevin presented a pair of white sneakers to Abigail."Abby, how about this shoulder bag?" Lauryn took off a bag. "It's as if it's tailor-made for you... It would look good on you!"Abigail's eyes sparkled like lacquer, her temperament refined and otherworldly, as she listened to them talking.Courtney, standing on the side, had turned pale and looked utterly shocked. She couldn't believe her ears!'What happened? What exactly is going on? Why are Mom and Dad treating Abigail as their daughter and giving her so many Alana Designs limited editions?'As she saw them surround Abigail with a look of concern, a feeling of panic welled up in Courtney's heart.'I was only away for a month? What is all this?'"All of them are in your size. If you don't like them, I will have another batch made!" Kevin looked fondly at Abigail."It's not necessary," Abigail said with a charming smile and a soft voice. "They are all lovely."Zack could sense from Abigail's tone that she wa
"Zack, thank you for coming in person today," Lauryn expressed her gratitude and then turned to Enrique. "Enrique, please take good care of him.""I will. Mr. Patterson, please follow me."Zack knew that the family still had something to discuss, so he glanced at Abigail, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then followed Enrique downstairs."Come on, let's sit down and talk."Lauryn took Abigail's hand and beckoned Courtney to sit down. For Courtney, this scene was like a thorn piercing deeply into her heart."Courtney, let me re-introduce her. Her name is Abigail Baldwin. She is our daughter who we lost track of."Upon hearing these words, Courtney was thunderstruck. She always thought that Abigail was a distant relative who came to borrow money, but she didn't expect that Abigail was her parents' daughter...No wonder her parents treated Abigail so well!"Here's what happened. I picked up the wrong baby. As for your biological mother..." Lauryn hesitated to speak at first, but finally
Courtney was stunned for a few seconds, as if frozen in place."Can you, like her, accept her in front of your parents and brother? Just as she accepted you?"Riley saw her lost in thought and patted her head, "Think about what big brother said tonight before going to bed. I hope that next time he comes home, he can see a different you."Riley's biological clock was still accurate. There were only three minutes left until his bedtime. He stood up and did not make any exceptions for anyone. Before he left, he specifically said, "If I were you, I would cherish everything in front of me, not wait until it's lost to regret it."Courtney looked at him in astonishment."Goodnight," Riley took a step and left the terrace.Seeing Riley leave, Janet, who was hiding in the dark, quickly appeared and said, "Miss Courtney, are you alright?"She had secretly followed Riley since she went to find Miss Courtney just now.I thought Rile
Due to significant damage to their central nervous system, as well as respiratory tract infections, anemia, disturbances of water and electrolyte balance, and other conditions, my grandparents required multiple medications. She first prepared the medicine she needed to take for the next three days, grinding them into powder for easy mixing with water.Unconsciously, it was already 8:30 in the evening and I had been busy.Riley and others were in the lush courtyard, raising their watches and looking towards the direction of the gate, but they never saw the figure of their sister returning home.Did she go out for something? Is she going to see that doctor?I don't know whether that doctor was a man or a woman. If it was a man, going alone so late, would my sister be taken advantage of?At this moment, Marilyn approached respectfully and reported, "Riley, the daisies you ordered have been planted. Would you like to go up and take a look?"
Riley suddenly became curious about her sister's position in the medical field. She wondered how her sister could come up with a solution to such a difficult medical condition in an instant. As is well known, the most skilled doctor internationally was Elian. It was said that his medical skills were extraordinary, capable of bringing the dead back to life. However, he was elusive, and no one knew his whereabouts.Since my grandparents were admitted to the ICU, he had sent people multiple times to inquire about Elian's whereabouts, hoping to ask him to come forward and save my grandparents. Some people said that he had already died, while others said that he had once appeared at Secret Delta. Whether these pieces of information are reliable or not, nobody knows.Did my sister learn her medical skills from Elian? If it was true, then surely the grandparents would be saved!"Abby, you seem so confident in that doctor's medical skills. It seems
"Abby, you saved your grandmother! In such a short time, you brought her back from the brink of death! You are truly amazing!" Kevin was extremely excited and wanted to hug her.To our surprise, Lauryn hugged her daughter first and said, "Great, your grandmother is fine! She scared us just now!"I'm afraid something might have happened to her elderly lady...I didn't expect my daughter's medical skills to be so brilliant. No wonder Sergio always praised her excellent medical skills before. It turns out that it was not that the old person favored Abby, but Abby really had the ability! Her medical skills were really superb! The decisiveness, calmness, and wisdom she displayed during the process of rescuing someone just now were truly impressive!Abigail was suddenly embraced by her mother, a feeling of being loved, pampered, and valued that she had never experienced from childhood to adulthood."If your grandmother woke up
"Mom, why don't you take Courtney out for a walk?" Riley reminded.Lauryn, also feeling heavy-hearted from her crying, stood up and pulled Courtney, "Courtney, let's go outside."Don't disturb grandparents' rest. When Courtney stood up, she pretended to be unsteady and threw herself into Lauryn's arms. "Mom, when will grandpa and grandma wake up? I'm so worried, I feel so uneasy... I feel dizzy, I can barely stand.""I know you're filial." Lauryn patted her back. "Mom believes that your grandparents are good people, and they will definitely recover soon.""I'm going to talk to the doctor," Kevin said. He couldn't control his emotions several times and stood up with red eyes, taking the first step out of the ward. When there were only the two siblings left in the ward, Riley asked softly, "Can you still take a pulse?"Abigail was taken aback for a moment, but she answered truthfully, "I know a little.""What went wrong with that
"Hello," Abigail nodded slightly to show politeness. The head nurse took one look and noticed that this young lady's demeanor appeared even more noble than Courtney's. Could she possibly be a relative of the Baldwin family? He seemed to come from a prestigious family, well-mannered, and there was no trace of the fragility and stubbornness that Courtney exuded. It was evident that he was someone who understood the bigger picture."Did Mom and Dad wake up today?" Lauryn asked with a glimmer of hope, although she knew the chances were extremely low."Sir Baldwin and Madam Baldwin had not woken up yet. In the past three days, their condition has not been very good..."The daily monitoring data and doctor's advice would be updated in the background of a software every day for Kevin and Lauryn to check at any time.Lauryn also noticed in the past few days that the data of the two elderly people has been gradually declining. The doctor's comment wa
After work, Riley brought Abigail to Mosley Hospital and parked the car in the VIP garage. Just as they got out of the car, they saw their motorhome approaching from a distance and parking in the spot next to theirs. This floor was exclusively for their family, the VIP floor where vehicles of other patients' families were not allowed to enter, ensuring excellent privacy.Kevin helped Lauryn out of the car while Courtney pretended to still be in pain from her previous fall and also asked her father for assistance. As soon as Courtney got out of the car, she immediately held Kevin's left hand and Lauryn's right hand, and said with a smile, "Big brother, sister, you're here too?"Riley's gaze fell on her arm, and she said, neither lightly nor heavily, "If someone didn't know, they would think that our parents are only yours. We are all grown-ups, yet still so childish."This is childish, I don't know if it means she is naive and loves to act coquettis
"Um." Riley finally picked up the coffee and took a sip.Abigail also picked up the cup and tasted it, "Not bad."At this moment, someone brought the snack cabinet and snacks again. Jaylin personally organized them and said, "Ms. Abigail, Mr. Baldwin usually doesn't eat snacks. If there are any that don't suit your taste, you can tell me, and I won't have them delivered next time.""Okay." Abigail usually doesn't eat snacks, but seeing her older brother being so thoughtful, her heart still feels warm.Jaylin sorted the snacks into different categories and labeled them with tags such as nuts, spicy strips, cookies, candies, pastries, potato chips, and so on. She then stuck the labels on them to make it easier for Abigail to find them next time.Brent on the side watched with drooling mouth, almost envious to the point of tears. He also wished he had such a domineering and gentle older brother...After Jaylin finished his work, Riley asked him
Noon. The employees who were eating in the cafeteria were so shocked when they saw Riley and Abigail appear that they couldn't even hold their forks steady.Hasn't Mr. Baldwin left yet?Did you still stay at the company and have lunch with Ms. Abigail?Did Mr. Baldwin really like Ms. Abigail, as rumored? But between them, there was at least a six or seven-year age difference! Is this considered an older bull eating tender grass?"He spoke to Ms. Abigail so gently."Riley bent down to listen to Abigail speaking, then nodded and said something to the cafeteria staff. They helped Abigail with her meal, first bringing it to the table and making her sit in her seat to wait."Mr. Baldwin was such a gentleman! He helped Ms. Abigail serve her meal first before serving his own, without any hesitation or inconvenience.""Abby!!"At this moment, Makenna prepared the meal and saw Abigail sitting alone at the dining tab
