Brock and Melissa walk down the street. Sully and Storm slightly out in front of them. Sniffing at all the new smells occasionally lifting their legs on the lampposts which bring the couple to a stop, only for them to carry on, after a few seconds of the dogs deciding that the smell is not worth following up.
There is a comfortable silence between them, as they pass nicely decorated houses and now closed stores, it’s only broken when Brock tells Melissa about certain things that happened in specific places.“This is where I broke my leg when i was 15.” Brock said pointing at a plaza that had a statue of a unicorn in bronze, rearing up, on a plinth, surrounding it is stairs that lead down to a fountain, and railings.Brock continued on “I was a bit of a skater when I was younger. And I was trying to do an Ollie, and instead I fell, landing on my leg. It snapped in two places. I was in plaster for 8 weeks.” He chuckled at the memory. They walked a bit further “Oh this used to be where Mrs Muggeridges cat used to hiss at us. When we were young we used to throw pebbles at it. It was a horrible thing. You only had to walk past it and it would scratch you.”They enter the park, there are a small smattering of people all round all walking their dogs or going home from work. The park is mainly open, with bright lights all round its very well lit, lots of green grass which now has white tips where it looks like it’s had the touch of a frost. The dogs start to pull, they are desperate to try and find friends in the park. But Melissa doesn’t let either of them off the lead. Although she knows that Storm and Sully are dog friendly, she’s not so sure about other dogs.Keeping them on the lead they do a full circuit where Melissa learns at the bottom of the hill is a children’s playground, as they walk back up the path, and past a frozen stream, to get back onto the circuit they walk up onto a little wooden bridge. Brock says “This is where Blake and I discovered the meaning behind the name of our town. We were on a field trip and Blake....” Brock looks at Melissa as he talking animatedly and when he mentions Blake’s name he sees Melissa visibly wince.“Oh god. I’m sorry Melissa. I’m sorry for the way my brother treated you.” He said as they both came to a stop, little lanterns dug into the ground, lit up the stream, it was a beautiful sight. The dogs sit down for a minute, all the pulling they did has made them out of breath.Brock continues speaking “You didn’t deserve to be treated like that.” Melissa turns away staring far off into the distance as if looking at something tiny on the horizon, then she said “I just wished he’d said something, instead he ghosted me.”Brock looks at Melissa for what seems like an age, after about five minutes he holds her arm turning her to face him, “I can’t change what he’s done, but I can help you move on. Melissa I. I’m developing feelings for you, I really like you, I tried hard not too, I never set out to do so, I just wanted us to be friends, I believe that I should be honest. I really like you. And if it’s something you want we could give it a go between us, if you can’t because of the hurt you’re going through I understand, I just want to see you smile, especially the way you smile at me, when we’re watching a movie, or you’re eating ice cream, and saving none for me.” This brought a smile to Melissa’s lips. “That’s it. That’s the smile I want to see, to me it’s brighter than the sun, when you walk into a room I don’t see anything or anyone else.” As he finishes his declaration of love, a snowflake lands in Melissa’s hair, but neither of them see it. He looks into her eyes. It’s like he can see right into her soul, Melissa tries to look anywhere else, tries to pull away from his loving gaze, it’s at that moment she realised she can’t. “Brock, thank you for telling me how you feel. And I will be honest too. Because you deserve that. At first I was happy to have found a friend in you. We like the same things, we have similar interests. As we started to get closer, I tried to stop thinking about you, but the more I did the harder it became, I tried to stop myself for developing feelings for you. Now standing here with this beautiful scenery, and you being honest I have to stop denying how I feel, I want to take a chance on you, on us, because if I don’t, I will look back and always wonder what if?” She looks back deep into his eyes, and then both of them move closer, before he puts his hand on her face, cupping her jaw, stroking her cheek with his free hand, gently and softly he brings his lips to hers in a sweet kiss.As they break apart, their foreheads touch, and they both smile, looking at each other, wrapped up in their own little world as the snow falls around them.Brock comes to the realisation as they both start to go cold. “We’d better be getting back, or Mom will send out a search party.”Just as they’re about to walk off the little wooden bridge the dogs stand suddenly, noticing a little squirrel hopping close by the dogs zoom off after it pulling Melissa and Brock with them. “I think the dogs have other plans Brock” Melissa says squealing with laughter, the dogs barking as the squirrel disappears off up a tree, once the squirrel was confirmed dead (up a tree away from the big barking machines and the even bigger humans) they walk back to the house. Holding out his hand Melissa puts her gloved one into it. And they walk back the whole way holding hands. No talking, just happiness and contentment.Brock turns to Melissa just before they reach the house “Melissa, do you want to tell my family about us? Or would you rather wait?”Melissa fidgeted “Do you mind if we don’t tell them yet?” Brock fully understood where she was coming from. She wanted to get used to them as a couple first, before involving his relatives. Giving her a quick kiss on the cheek they walk towards the house dropping their hands at the last minute.Little did either of the couple know they were being watched by the same car who had been following Melissa that very morningIt was getting close to seven pm when the two walked in. Getting in out of the cold December air, the two took off their coats, and the leads off the dogs, Brock shut them in the small living room, that was separate to the one the family were sitting in.Elaine looked over to them when they walked in, “Hello lovely’s, are the dogs okay?”“Yeah they enjoyed their walk and even chased a squirrel.” Melissa said laughing.“It’s okay for you Sully pulled me into a bush.” Brock said with a smile.“So we thought we’d have a few drinks, and perhaps play a few more games?” Elaine said.“Before you do I have something for you.” Melissa disappeared into the kitchen and then returned five minutes later with the mince pies. “I Erm...... I made these for you guys, they are kind of a tradition in the U.K. we have them at Christmas and in my opinion they are delicious.” She said opening the biscuit tin, that she was holding, to show mince pies with icing sugar on top.“You can eat
The two sat on the steps to the porch and talked, the chiminea giving off a little heat, kept them warm.“I was out here taking photographs of the snow. It’s such a lovely picture, I couldn’t sleep.” Brock admitted.“Oh same. I tossed and turned.” Melissa agreed, taking a sip of the hot chocolate.Brock fiddled with the camera, holding it up, Melissa looked out over the street now covered in a cold white blanket. It sparkled under the dim light of the street lights. It looked so magical. Melissa thought how picturesque the street looked, the dark sky, the dim orange glow and the white snow.Even the cars were covered in the deep snow.Out of the corner of her eye she saw a flash of light and whipped her head round to look, there with a guilty look on his face was Brock.“Oh my god Brock, you didn’t just take my picture? Give me the camera I’m deleting it.” Melissa placed her now empty mug under the swing seat on the porch, and she reached for the camera in Brock’s
THE NEXT MORNING - CHRISTMAS DAYMelissa woke up to bad breath, opening her eyes blearily, she saw a drooling, brown and white muzzle in her face “Urgh Sully you stink.” The St Bernard gave her a sloppy lick on her face. “Stop. I’m up.” Melissa said pushing the dogs face away gently.Sully got up and onto the floor, Melissa, sat up, scratching her head a little confused and woolly headed as to where she was for a little while.Getting up, she walked up to the back door, the dogs hot on her heels. Opening it, they ran out only to come to a sliding stop on the entryway floor, when they saw the snow. Storm looked out at the white blanket that now covered the previous lush green grass. Sully watched Storm eyeing him. He always made sure that it was safe by watching Storm in situations like these.Taking a couple of cautious steps forward he stuck his nose into the snow, sniffed, and growled at the cold white stuff, deciding it was safe, he ran off into the garden, chasing in
After letting the dogs in, Melissa walked back towards her basement bedroom, not looking around just focusing on where she was going. She was beyond angry, she felt humiliated and embarrassed.Melissa hated all these emotions and they were starting to overwhelm her, she felt the bitter sting of salty tears burn at the back of her eyes, swallowing hard so the tears didn’t fall, she walked bumping into another hard body. Not daring to look up at the face of the person, she knew who it was from the Avengers pyjamas.“Hey sweetheart.” Sleepy eyed, and hair all messed up from sleep, he had bare feet. His deep voice rumbled, Melissa looked up at him, he was looking at her with a bright smile on his face, when Melissa lifted her head, his smile faded.“Babygirl what’s wrong?” Brock asked quietly. Melissa couldn’t respond, the tears would fall if she did. Brock understood and putting his arm around her shoulder took her to her bedroom, as soon as she stepped onto the steps and the
CHRISTMAS DAY EVENINGMelissa was changing getting ready to go to bed, she smiled as she thought back to earlier in the day. They’d had an amazing dinner, and gone to relax. Elaine had opened some alcohol and Brock suggested that they play some drinking games, with their parents, Andrea could drink soda and join in. Elaine and Tony had passed on that idea so that just left Blake, Brock, Andrea and Melissa.Andrea said that it’s weird to play drinking games with her brothers, so she left to go up to bed. Which loosely translated she was going to go FaceTime her friends. That left Melissa, Blake and Brock. “Ok so how about we play monopoly with a twist?” Blake suggested. Brock and Blake explained the rules. When you land on another’s property the owner of said property tells you how much the rent is and what to drink, you pay the rent and chug a drink
Brock woke up with a start, his arm was draped across the bed, looking sideways he saw a sleeping Melissa, her hair messy from where he’d had his hands in it, he smiled at this. Then he remembered earlier, when he’d made love to her. He saw Blake at the top of the stairs, and yes a small part of him had felt euphoric, here was Blake watching as his older twin was deep inside Melissa, this felt to him like he was asserting his dominance over Blake. Like Brock was trying to say “This is how you treat a woman like Melissa” Brock felt Melissa stir and she rolled towards him, “Hey.” Melissa said before she realised they were both naked in bed pulling the covers further over her naked chest. “Hey beautiful.” Broc
A FEW DAYS LATERMelissa is back at home. Her family were back from the U.K. pulling into the car park. She had to nip in the office and deal with a break in. The burglars had stolen inconsequential items, files of her trade deal in Australia it was essentially research not that it was good for anything. The company’s profit and loss statements, also a few items of importance to Melissa they wouldn’t fetch much money but to Melissa they were priceless. Nobody had seen anything the cameras never picked up anything either. Brock and Melissa was having dinner later, so she needed to get ready. As Melissa approached the door she noticed it was a jar. Cautiously she dialled 911, leaving the phone now connected to the emergency services “Hi police please, my names Melissa Hartford I’ve had a break in.”“Ok Miss Hartford stay on the line and don’t go in under any circumstances. There will be an officer with you shortl
LATER THAT SAME NIGHTMelissa is lying in bed “Melissa? You still awake?” Brock asked quietly“Yeah. I’ve not been able to sleep. My brain is awake. And I can’t shut it off.” Melissa said while sniffling. She felt Brock move on the bed. The dimly lit lamp he had turned on shone in the dark. Turning to face Melissa. “Oh honey.” Brock said when he saw her tear stained face. He hugged her tightly.“Why Brock? Who would do this to me? To my business?” Melissa cried. She didn’t care if Brock saw her feeling vulnerable. “Do you think this is the same person who killed my dog? The security files are an issue but that can be fixed. I feel violated by the fact someone took my underwear. They’d taken something that goes onto my body, the most sacred part of it and took them.”Brock felt angry at this fact. He could understand why Melissa felt this way. Someone
After meeting with his lawyer Shane was armed with all the documentation he needed. He got in his car and drove to where they holding Blake. Getting out Shane met with his lawyer. “Mr Hartford. Are you sure you want to do this?” The small man, dressed in an expensive suit and thick rimmed glasses asked. “Mr Lawerence.” Shane turned and looked him straight in the eyes. “If I’m wrong about this guy I want to know. And I’m fairly good a judge of character. I can also tell when someone is lying which is why people hate to play poker with me.”“Then why didn’t you pick up on it when you first met Mr Milligan.” Steve Lawerence asked as they walked towards the entrance. &n
WARNING THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS REFERENCES TO ALCOHOLISM, ABUSIVE LANGUAGE AND SUICIDEIN A CABIN Two men are having a conversation. “What the fuck have you done?” The older of the two asked. “I’m tired of waiting for Melissa. She’s getting further out of our reach.” The younger one said. Slamming his fist on the table the older guy picked up his ringing phone. “Hello. Yes. Yes. Alright.” Hanging up the phone he turned it off. “You could have killed Melissa!&rdqu
LATER THAT EVENING.“Dinners ready.” Blake called to Melissa who had had a nap and a shower. Walking down the stairs with damp hair falling around her shoulders and her face Melissa could smell the scent of baked trout, her mouth salivating at the thought. An hour later with full stomachs Blake and Melissa retired to the couch with a full bottle of Malbec both slightly tipsy.“So I gotta know.” Blake considered for a minute asking Melissa what she saw in Brock. But quickly changed her mind.“What was young Melissa like? Party girl? Nerd? Or were you miss Popular?” He smiled as he said this.“I was very studious, but I wasn’t a nerd, I wasn’t popular either.” Melissa made a face like she was remembering a bad incident. “I was just normal. My turn now.” Melissa squealed with glee “What was Blake like as a teen?”“I was
THE NEXT DAY.“I’m sorry baby. I forgot I’m supposed to photographing the governor and his family. It’s supposed to be an all day event. Until about 10pm.” Brock said guiltily.“What’s the point in being here if I’m going to be alone?” Melissa asked trying her best not to sound whiny.“I’ve spoken to Blake. He will take care of you. I trust him to keep you safe. I trust him with my life. He’s going fishing, and you can go with him.” Brock said plainly.“Fishing? I wouldn’t know where to start.” Melissa said as Brock got out of the en-suite.“Well bows a great time to learn. Listen Blake’s taken time off and closed his bar so I can work and so that one of us can always be with you.” Brock explained gently.Melissa pouted for a brief moment before realising he was right. Blake had put his business on h
Melissa stood up getting ready to leave. “There’s really no talking to you. I came here in good faith to make you aware of what was happening as you don’t care.” Blake ran and grabbed her hand pulling her into his chest causing them both to fall on the floor.Blake looked into her eyes as Melissa lay on his chest. Putting his hand on her cheek a very loving and caring gesture he moved his head up towards hers and kissed her again, this time though she brought her knee up between his legs connecting with his genitals.Blake howled in pain. Sucking at his teeth he howls “Again?” Melissa extracts herself from the floor, and runs to the door. The hot sting of tears in her eyes. She fiddles with the lock as she hears Blake get up.She ran down the stairs, her heeled boots clump clumping as she went. She could hear the pit pat of Blake’s feet as he chases her. “Melissa, honey w
A FEW DAYS LATER“This is soooo relaxing.” Melissa crooned as the masseuse rubbed oil into her back.At the same moment Brock’s phone rang. Adjusting his towel around his waist he got up and took the phone call into the hallway. Melissa allowed herself to think back on the previous days events. “Babe? Babe? Come on wake up.” Melissa shook Brock’s shoulder. Opening a bleary eye Brock looked at Melissa. She was showered and dressed. Wearing black skinny jeans, and a red cashmere sweater, her hair was tied up in a high ponytail and she had make up on. Brock jumped out of bed and in the shower. Showering and dressing in record time he grabbed the keys to the Porsche and they went to the car. Brock snapped his belt in the drivers side, and started the engine, pulling out of the parking lot, before driving off to his and Blake’s apartment. “So you sure you want to do this alone?” Brock asked.
After a little while the doorbell went getting up off the couch Brock got up and walked over to the door. Melissa sat on the couch, her head hanging and tears falling down onto her lap. Gritting his teeth knowing he feels helpless to stop this Brock opens the door. “Mr Milligan?” The detective asks. “Yes. Come in. Miss Hartford is in the living room.” He steps to the side and in the detective walks past him, taking a seat on the opposite couch to Melissa. Shutting the door Brock follows him and sits next to Melissa taking her hand that’s now in her lap. “Can you take me through tonight’s events?” He asks. Melissa nods and starts to recall everything that has happened, including the phone call, the detective writes everything in a notebook. “Ok. I’m going to bag all the stuff and take it to the forensics.” Sliding on a pair of latex gloves, he disappeared into the bedroom. After a few minutes,
Grabbing the phone Brock could see that this has pushed Melissa over the edge. He grabbed the detectives card and typed in the number. The voice came out down the end of the phone as if he’d just been woken up “Yeah?” “Hi it’s Brock Milligan, I don’t know if you remember the break in a Melissa Hartford’s place.” Brock said into the phone. “Yeah. I remember. What of it?” The voice said no longer full of sleep. “There’s been a development.” Brock said putting his arm around a now shivering Melissa and guiding her into the living room. “On my way.” The detective said before hanging up. Brock pressed the red button to cancel the call. And sat Melissa down next to him on the couch. “Baby, you okay?” He asked worried that this would be a tipping point for Melissa, knowing that even the strongest of women would find it difficult to cope, with everything that happened. “Y-yeah.” She said haltin
Melissa awoke to bright sunlight streaming through the glass windows. The warmth felt nice on her skin. Rolling onto her side she opened a sleepy eye, she had a sudden feeling of dread, as she saw a tie that was not Brock’s, and a memory of last night came flooding back, Chris, she remembered the way his hands felt on her body, and the way he felt inside her, for a brief second she smiled then she felt an arm drape across her. That feeling of guilt gnawed away at her insides. She’d cheated on Brock. A single tear ran down her face as she realised this fact. She was in her own world thinking of what to say to Brock how to redeem her relationship when a voice, thick and scratchy from having just woken up, startled her. “Good morning babygirl. Not too stiff I hope.” The voice came from behind. She immediately turned over, and was met with Brock’s smiling face, an eighth of an inch of stubble, and very messy hair. Bro
