Two losses in a day

"I swear Kev, I love you." A young girl of about nineteen years old said. She was wearing a skimpy red dress that was above her knees, with silver stiletto heels.

She was fair in complexion, average in height and had nice curves. Her long wavy brown hair reached her waist. She had honey brown eyes, a pointed nose and rosy pink lips.

""Evelyn, you know what we are going to land ourselves on. Ma'am Pat wouldn't like to see us together. She'll be mad."" A young man with old clothes replied.

He was pretty handsome, he had sea-blue eyes, his nose was pointed like an eagle's beak and he had red lips. He was quite muscular.

""Momma is not going to know Kev, it'll be a secret, I promise. This is going to be between us."" Evelyn rolled her eyes.

""Besides, is it money you want? I'll give it to you. Just accept me please. I really, really love you."" She pouted.

She leaned forward and hugged him, her head on his chest. Kelvin didn't respond to the hug.

""Kev sweetie, you don't know how I feel anytime I see you. My heart beats faster, I have goosebumps all over me, gosh, it feels like being in heaven.""

He slowly disengaged from the hug.

"I don't love you," he told her.

       "Kev." She said.

He cut her short, ""I don't love you, okay? Stop bothering me. I never liked you to begin with and besides, you're so."" He paused, "Uh, I don't know, carefree."

"Listen, I'm not who you think I am." She made an attempt to touch him, but he gently refused.

"Kelvin please, I love you." Her eyes went teary and she sniffed.

"Evelyn." Kelvin held her hands, ""Listen, I don't want to make you feel bad, but I can't stay with someone I don't love for the rest of my life. I just can't."

She snapped his hands off hers, fuming.

""You'll regret that! I promise you!"

She walked furiously to the door and slammed it.

""Oh dear, what's she up to now? I hope she doesn't do something silly."" He sighed and continued his cleaning.

A few hours later, Kelvin was called to his boss's office.

He got there and greeted his boss.

        "Good morning ma'am." He smiled.

She didn't seem to be in a good mood. She frowned when he entered the office.

"You cleaned this room, didn't you?" She asked, fury written all over her face.

She was a fat woman. Her bangles clung to her skin, making it look like her skin would rip off any moment. The blue dress she wore was very tight, her make-up was heavy.

She was sitting on a throne like a chair.

"Yes ma'am, I did." He replied.

"How did my money go missing?" She asked.

      "Money? Ma'am, I don't know what you're talking about.""

""You wretched thief! You stole my money, and you deny it?"" She yelled.

A cold sweat broke out on his forehead, he was trembling. He fell on his knees.

"Ma'am, I swear, I didn't take it. I don't know what you're talking about. I just cleaned the room you asked me to.""

His heartbeat was faster than before. Ma'am Pat was known to be a very cruel and brutal woman. What if he gets fired? How would he survive?

Him, his brother, what about his Grandma? This job was what they used to survive. The homeowner would come at the end of the month for her house rent f*e. What was he going to do?

"Liar! Bloody liar!"" She yelled again.

"Ma'am I." He tried to explain.

       She cut him short.

      "Keep quiet, you're fired!"

Kelvin felt the whole world come crushing at his feet.

""Ma'am please, I didn't take anything. I promise ma'am, please I won't be able to survive without this job. I need it, my family needs it.""

"Enough! That's none of my business!"" She rose up from the throne like the chair she was sitting on and walked out of the room.

Kelvin felt his heart twist, he was finding it hard to breathe. Tears walked down his cheeks, he cleaned his face with his hand and stood up from the floor.

He walked slowly to the door and opened it, he walked out of the room and down the hall till he got to the counter.

"Kelvin?" A girl behind the counter called.

"Kelvin, what's wrong?" She asked again.

      He turned and faced her.

      "Ma'am Pat fired me."

"Oh my gosh!" She gasped, "Oh dear, what happened? What did you do?"

""She accused me of stealing from her, Clara. You know I would never steal, right? You believe me, don't you?"" He wiped his eyes.

"I do, sorry my dear." Clara consoled him. She walked up to him and hugged him.

"Everything will be fine." She assured him.

"I have to go."" He said.

She pulled away, "Okay Kev, take care."

        "Thank you." He smiled sadly.

He walked towards the entrance and stopped when he was out of the building. He looked back at the building with tears in his eyes, shook his head and sighed. He continued his walk to the main gate.

A car was parked just in front of the building. A lady alighted from the car.

       "Evelyn," Kelvin muttered.

Evelyn looked his way and smirked.

""You got fired? Oh sorry." She faked a sad pout.

She laughed, ""I told you. You'll regret ever rejecting my love."" She laughed.

""It was you! You."" He pointed a finger at her, tears blurring his vision.

"Yeah, yeah, I took it. I took the money."" She smirked.

He stood rooted to the ground, speechless, "How could you?"

""Kev sweetie, you caused all this. Just accept my love, then, we'll elope. I promise to make you rich and."" She walked towards him.

"Never mind. I will go and leave you here alone. I don't want to go anywhere with you."" He snapped and walked towards the gate.

"I will make sure you never remain the same Kelvin!" She yelled after him.

Kelvin walked down the street, confused and angry.

""What did I do to deserve this? Is this the punishment for being handsome?"

He groaned, "Evelyn, what did I ever do to you?"

"What am I going to do? Where do I get a job? Jacky is due to enroll in a school. Why is my life like this?"

The more his questions came, the more answers seemed to disappear. He continued his walk down the street and got to a small house. His eyes caught the busy restaurant opposite the house. People were moving in and out.  The aroma of the dishes filled the air. His stomach growled, and he remembered he had not had breakfast. He sighed and knocked on the door.

"Alexander are you in?" He asked.

"Yeah, what's up?" A voice replied from within.

Kelvin opened the door and went in. A guy with pretty green eyes looked his way.

"What's up with you?" Alexander asked, arching his brow.

           "I got fired." Kelvin said.

"Whoa! What did you do?"" Alexander asked, surprised.

"Ma'am Pat accused me of theft." Kelvin slumped on a couch. He could feel tears pricking his eyes.

"I wish I could help Kelvin, but you know I'm equally not that buoyant myself." Alexander came to sit beside him.

Kelvin stared at the ceiling, different thoughts filled his head.

       "Sorry." Xander said.

      Kelvin looked at him.

""What am I going to do, Alexander? My family depends on me."" His voice was choked.

Alexander just looked at him, his eyes said it all, he had no idea.

Kelvin bowed his head and Alexander pulled him into a hug.

           "Everything will be fine."

Kelvin spent some hours there and decided to finally go home.

When he reached his house, it was crowded. Some people were wailing and others just bowed their head in grief.

He pushed through the crowd and got to the entrance of his house.

       "What's wrong now?" he muttered.
