CHARLOTTE'S POV
“Mr Sam, Please don't do this! I'll pay you all your money I promise!” I frantically begged as the huge man approached me, a lustful look plastered on his face and he licked his lips as he crouched in front of me. “Do you know how pleasant you look when you cry? So beautiful and ready for me.” My insides churned with disgust at his words and all I wanted to do was spit on his face. So I did. His face flushed with anger and he smacked my face so hard that my nose bled and my mouth was filled with blood. He pulled my hair harshly and smacked me again and it felt like my skull had been split open. The walls spun around me and everything was turning black. When he noticed that I was losing consciousness, he pushed me away and cleaned the spit off his face. “You better be grateful I'm in a good mood today. You'd have been reunited with your dead parents today.” He spat on my face and left the house with the rest of his boys and I passed out. Hours later, I woke up to a splitting headache that threatened to send me to my early grave. That would be a great idea, I thought. It'll be better to die than to keep living like a slave, especially for something I had no involvement in. I looked at the time and I jumped off the floor, a move I instantly regretted as my head pounded with more ferocity. I had a morning shift at the restaurant and I was already two hours late. I was getting ready for work when Mr. Sam and his gang came in to collect their ‘daily fees'. I wonder if I'll ever get out of this mess that my parents left for me. I looked at myself in the mirror and I shrieked. I looked like a total disaster! Which isn't a surprise because I look like this most of the time. I applied a little make-up to cover up the bruises on my face and immediately rushed to work. Despite the crazy migraine I had, I still ran to the restaurant. Getting to work, I was hit with the worst news ever. I've been fired. My boss handed me the sack letter but I refused it. “Sir, I can't accept this. I've done nothing but serve you and this restaurant well. If I've done something wrong, you can tell me and I'll do my best to correct all my mistakes. I just can't accept this sack letter without getting a significant reason behind it.” I looked at him firmly but I was shaking inside. Dread and doom washed over me at the thought of being fired. If I lost this job then my life would be over. How would I pay off my debts when I have no source of income? My boss looked at me with pity and pushed the letter into my hand. “I don't want to fire you Charlotte, you're a very great worker and it pains me to let you go but… my life depends on it.” My brows furrowed in confusion as I tried to process his words. He noticed my confusion and sighed, running a hand through his slightly gray hair. “I'm being threatened Charlotte and it all revolves around you. The customers have also been complaining of how scary you look with bruises all over your face.” I stared at him in disbelief, refusing to believe that he was chasing me away because of my bruises. “About the bruises, I'll wear more make-up. I'll hide it all and be more friendly with the customers. Sir, you can't just fire me like this! You know the reason I have these bruises and if you fire me now, I'll have no way to ever pay back those loans. Please sir-” He interrupted me by raising his hand and he shook his head. “Take care of yourself Charlotte and please don't come here again.” He walked away before giving me a chance to speak. I stood there watching as he retreated into his office, dumbfounded and paralyzed. A not-so-friendly tug on my arm brought me out of my reverie and I saw the security guard standing in front of me. Probably to send me out. I brushed his hand off me and walked out of the restaurant angrily, feeling betrayed, hurt, but most of all scared. I can't pay those loans off without a job. My phone screen popped up with a message and my mood lifted a bit when I saw it was from Micheal. My wallpaper was a picture of both of us and I smiled unconsciously as I read the message. ‘Let's meet up.’ I was so elated at the message that I didn't realize that I was smiling like an idiot. We haven't met in a long while since he travelled home and now that he's back, I can't wait to spend more time with him. I suddenly started to run because all I wanted to do was bury myself in his arms. He's the comfort and support I need right now. I took a right turn as I headed for our secret spot. I forgot about everything that had happened to me today as I ran faster. When I got to the park and walked into the small house at the side, I was beaming with happiness and trying so hard to catch my breath. I looked around as I waited for him to show up, my heart pounding so hard. “Charlotte.” I heard him call my name and I almost melted into a puddle as I turned around and he was standing right in front of me. “Michael,” I whispered as I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tightly. Oh, it felt so good to be home. I almost glued myself to him as tears fell from my eyes and I started to sob. He noticed and hesitantly wrapped his right arm around me faintly that I could barely feel it. I frowned as I pulled away and stared at him and he avoided my gaze. I wiped my tears from my eyes as I smiled and made him look at me. “Micheal, what's wrong? Aren't you happy to see me? Didn't you miss me? Of course you did, I know you did.” I said and he simply cleared his throat and pulled my hand away from his face and held it gently. “Charlotte…” He hesitated like he was about to say something but then he sighed. “Why were you crying? Did something happen?” He asked and I nodded as I hugged him again, but this time he didn't even bother to hug me back. His actions confused me and when he pulled back from the hug and held my shoulders at arm's width, I knew something was wrong. “Michael?” I asked and he groaned as he ran a hand through his hair. Okay, now I'm worried. Did something bad happen? “Charlotte, listen, I have a confession to make. And I know it isn't something you'd expect, but I just want you to understand me okay?” He said and I nodded, though I was still confused. “Let's break up Charlotte.”OWEN'S POVMy phone kept buzzing on the table and I flung it away in anger. I was in the middle of an important meeting yet my father kept on calling me just to annoy me. Caleb snorted beside me and I glared at him. He raised his hands in surrender, trying to suppress his laughter and focus on the meeting.Sometimes I wish I was like him, so calm and collected. I shook my head and focused on the meeting, feeling my anger increase as the worker presenting kept spewing nonsense. I banged the table hard as I stood up and everyone flinched in fear.“Is this what I pay you to do? How many months have we been working on this project huh? Why can't you guys ever get anything right!?” I yelled, anger and frustration written all over my face as everyone bowed their heads in fear. Caleb sighed and placed his hand on my shoulder, urging me to calm down.“This meeting is postponed, the next time we'll be meeting here, you better have something better to present. Or your sack letter will be presen
CHARLOTTE'S POV“Let's break up Charlotte.” My head rang at the words he said and it felt like a bomb had been dropped inside my heart. “What did you say?” I asked as I took a step back, wondering if I had heard wrongly. “You're joking right? What do you mean? Why? What did I do wrong? What happened? Did-” “Just stop Charlotte. You did nothing okay?” He said with a frustrated expression and I stood there frozen and dumbfounded. This is a lie right? I'm definitely dreaming. I closed my eyes and slapped myself hard to wake myself up from this dream and when the pain resonated on my face as I opened my eyes, I realized it was not a dream. This was real. “Micheal…” I said as my voice cracked and I cleared my throat to stable myself. “At least tell me why. What I did wrong. Tell me where I failed as a good girlfriend. I can fix us. I'll work on myself so I can be better for you. Just tell me…”“I-” He started and looked away with guilt all over his face. “I found someone else. She was
OWEN'S POV“Tell me, what did you think of?” He asked me and I signaled for him to come closer. “You have to keep it a secret though. You can't tell anyone about it.” I said to him firmly and he nodded, moving closer to me.“So, Dad wants me to get married right? Then I'll find a girl, get married to her and after I turn forty, he'll give me my inheritance and then we'll get divorced. It's going to be like a contract marriage. Do you understand?” I was bouncing in my seat, happy with the plan I just made.Caleb looked at me for a while, his expression unreadable and it seemed like he had zoned out. When he stayed silent, I waved my hand in front of him and he jolted.“Are you alright?” I asked, and he ran a hand through his face. He stood up and walked around for a while, probably thinking of what I said.“I'm alright.” He replied after a while and came to sit back down in front of me. “It's an excellent plan, but don't you think it's a little risky? Marrying someone you don't know at
CHARLOTTE'S POVI opened my eyes slowly as I tried to process my surroundings. Am I in heaven already? I looked around and realized that I was in a hospital, with an IV drip connected to my veins. So… I didn't die? I tried to sit up but the pain in my chest prevented me from moving so I laid back down. Why am I in a hospital? I thought I ascended…I kicked my feet in frustration, wincing at the pain it brought me when the door was pushed open. A man walked in and he looked surprised to see me awake.“You're awake? How do you feel?” He asked as he sat next to me, with guilt and worry written all over his face. I suppose he was the one who hit me with his car.“It was you who hit me right?” I asked slowly, my brain still feeling foggy. Probably the effect of the drip.He nodded slowly and opened his mouth to speak but I beat him to it. “Then why didn't you leave me to die? You should have driven away and left me behind. Why did you save me!?” I yelled at him as I sat up, ignoring the p
OWEN'S POVToday has been a very strenuous day. I collapsed on my office chair as I thought about all that had happened today. My father's crazy insistence on me getting married, arranging girls for me to pick a wife from, and then I hit someone who yelled at me for saving her. Should I have just left her there to die? Doesn't that mean I'll go to prison?I rubbed my face, fatigue and stress beginning to get the better part of me. I still have a lot of work to do and I suddenly don't know where to start. Caleb walked in and my eyes immediately lit up at the sight of a bottle in his hand.“What happened? Why did you sound so scared and frantic on the phone earlier?” He placed the bottle in front of me and sat down, worry etched into his features.I sighed and grabbed a glass under my table as I explained all that happened to him. He stared at me in disbelief, with his mouth wide open. I laughed and poured myself a glass of whiskey, gulping it down in an instant and relishing the sat
CHARLOTTE'S POVI stared at the man who walked in in shock. How did he find me? And why was he here? Mr Sam is going to hurt him!He looked at me with a shocked expression and I shook my head at him as I tried to tell him to leave. Mr Sam got up and walked to him and I panicked. I can't endanger a stranger that saved my life.I got up and held Mr Sam's hand, stopping him from moving forward. “He doesn't know anything about this. Please let him go. He has nothing to do with me at all. He's probably in the wrong house. You can do whatever you want to me just- just let him leave first. Please.”I pleaded with him and a smirk formed on his face as he yanked my hands away from his and pulled my hair tightly.“Let her go! Why are you doing this? What has she done to you?” The stranger asked and tried to come closer and I knew I had to do something.“NO! Go away! Just leave and never come back! You were never welcome here anyway. This is all your fault! If you had left me to die yesterday,
OWEN'S POV“I have a condition.” She looked at me with hope in her eyes and I thought about this again. Would this be a good idea?"How much is the money?" I enquired, wanting to know what I was getting myself into. She looked at her fingers as she played with them, she's probably nervous."A hundred thousand dollars." She whispered and I stared at her in shock. That's what she was getting abused for?"Just that?" I asked to be sure and she nodded slowly. That's a small amount compared to the trauma she's going through.I could help her with her loans, I'm rich enough to pay off the loans in the United States. She'll have to be my wife.Marrying her will benefit me a lot, I just need to pay off her debt, and then she gets married to me for three months and the inheritance is mine. She won't have any additional deal or request to make so this will all fall in my favor.“I'll pay off all of your debts if you decide to marry me.” She gaped at me in disbelief and I felt offended. I'm a to
CHARLOTTE'S POV I stared out the window, taking a deep breath in as I braced myself for the impending outburst and I flinched when I heard her yell.“WHAT!?” Roselia yelled, her hands on her waist as she paced around the room, trying to comprehend all I had just told her. “What do you mean you're getting married? And it's a contract marriage at that? What were you thinking!?” I sighed and tried to calm her down but she wasn't having any of it. My chest began to hurt and as I grimaced in pain, she finally noticed and calmed down as she helped me lay down.“You should let me explain myself, Rosie.” I held her hand and she looked at me with worry and concern. “Yesterday, I wanted to end my life, but it seemed like this man was sent by the heavens to save my life.”“Micheal betrayed me, Rose. He cheated on me. He said she was better than me in every way. My life fell apart and when I thought it was over, this man appeared like an angel sent from God. He hit me by accident and brought me
