Lily Montgomery

"You can lift your shirt now."

The doctor’s hands were firm, cold, yet gentle as she spread the gel across my belly. The room was quiet, except for the soft hum of the machine being turned on.

I glanced at my grandfather, still unsure, but he gave me a calm nod.

“You’re safe, sweetheart. She’s been my trusted doctor for years,” he whispered, gently touching my shoulder with the kind of tenderness only someone forged by war could show.

I nodded, trying to control the anxiety rising inside me in waves.

The screen lit up.

And there it was.

Tiny. Curled. Fragile. But alive.

A sound filled the room.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

My heart stopped for a second—just to hear his.

“Everything looks good,” the doctor said with a smile. “Strong heartbeat. Development matches the gestational age. A healthy baby.”

I closed my eyes, letting a tear fall.

My world was in ruins.

But inside me… there was still life.

When we left the room, Dimitri offered me a glass of water. I s

Slouched shoulders, a sharp gaze — Sasha was no longer the girl I rescued from Orlov's house. She now looked like a shadow that had learned how to survive.“Sasha,” I called. She hesitated, like my name from the past had lost all meaning. But when she saw me — really saw me — her eyes faltered.“You’re okay…” she murmured.I took a step forward. “And still pregnant,” I added, with a tired half-smile.She let out a breath, almost laughing, almost crying. Then she walked toward me with firm steps and… hugged me.It was a strange hug. Too tight, like someone holding on for dear life, someone who hadn’t trusted anyone in a long time. Her scent still carried traces of fear. But there was something new now too. Fury. A desire to live.“Thank you,” she whispered in my ear. “If you hadn’t shown up… I’d still be th

Lily MontgomeryThe next morning, I woke up with a dry throat, a sore body, and a mind on fire.I had dreamed of Matteo. Or at least... his touch. In the dream, he held my hand so tightly it hurt. But when I called his name, he simply vanished. When I opened my eyes, Sasha was already on the porch, sitting on the low wall, sipping black coffee from an old glass cup."Did you sleep?" I asked, joining her."A little," she replied. "I dreamed I was killing Orlov."I sat beside her, pulling the blanket over my shoulders."Nice dream."She gave a crooked smile."Are you sure you want to do this?""Are you backing out?""Not even dead."We sat in silence for a moment, staring at the tall trees in front of the house. The world seemed too calm for the war we were about to start."We’ll need a map. Equipment. And access," she said, more serious now. "That house is protected by sensors and thermal cameras. Unknown number. No location.I answered on the second ring.Nothing.Silence.But not just any silence. It was a loaded silence.Full of breath.A breath I knew like my own. That delicate pause between fear and courage. That way of breathing with your chest tight, like you want to speak, but you can't.I closed my eyes, gripping the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white.“Lily…”Nothing.But she was there.I knew it.It wasn’t my imagination. Sasha was standing beside me, her gaze sharper than ever. She knew. Something was wrong. But what?Dimitri didn’t give us time for more questions. Marcus Taylor had delivered it by hand—straight from the hell he dug up in the Russian mafia’s underworld."It’s all there, Salvatore," he said, tossing the folder onto the tinted glass. My breathing stayed steady between shots. There was no more hesitation when pulling the trigger. Because I couldn’t afford to hesitate anymore.“Sixteen hits out of eighteen, Ms. Antonov,” one of the guards beside me said, clipboard in hand.“Montgomery,” I corrected, without taking my eyes off the target. “I’m still Montgomery.”He nodded silently. But everyone there knew. I was Lily Romano, yes. Luigi’s legitimate daughter. Dimitri’s heir. The woman now running part of New York’s operations—without anyone knowing.“Another round, ma’am?” he asked.“No. I’ve trained enough for today.”I holstered the gun at my side, hidden beneath a gray coat. The car moved silently along the dirt road cutting through the countryside, surrounded by tall trees and a low fog that looked like it came straight out of an old movie. Matteo drove with one hand, the other resting on my thigh, as if to remind me that we were still here. Together.“He’s going to test you,” I said, staring out the window. “He’ll provoke you. And if you respond, the war starts right there.”“He’s not the first father of a woman who’s hated me, ragazza,” Matteo replied with a crooked smile. “But maybe the first who commands a private army.”I frowned.“And who’s the other woman you had?”“I was joking, darling.”“He’s my grandfather. And if I love you, he’ll like you.”“And you trust him?” Matteo raised his eyebrows. “Even though his son set you up, and he faked his death for years, never reaching out to your mother?”It took me a moment to answer. Not because I wasn’t sure — but because the answer was deeper than simple words could express.“Yes, I trust him. He saved

The smell of coffee filled the kitchen like an old memory. Strong, bitter, comforting.Matteo was leaning against the doorframe, his hair still messy, shirt unbuttoned, and that look in his eyes—lighter, maybe... but only on the outside. Inside, I knew he still carried it all.I placed the cup on the table and slowly sat down, one hand resting instinctively on my belly. The baby moved, as if sensing the calm. Or maybe... knowing that his father was near.“There’s butter in the top cabinet,” I said, and he gave me a sideways smile, walking over with slow steps.“You’re telling me to get stuff in your kitchen?”“In my house. And yes. I’m in charge here.”Matteo let out a low laugh, grabbed the butter, and sat across from me.The silence between us wasn’t uncomfortable. It was heavy. Like we were both waiting for the other to break the peace before returning to reality.Because we both knew... what we had was beautiful. But everything outside of it… was still ugly. With the cup in my han
