~This is a two part book. This is Eve's story.~
I was just getting back from my last class of the semester and I wandered into my apartment to look for something to eat. It was after 9 at night and my roommate Violet was out with her boyfriend.
I saw a huge pile of mail on the counter and began to pick through it while I waited on my frozen dinner in the microwave.
It dawned on me that I hadn’t really looked through the mail for probably a month. I just had a flat fee for rent and my dad paid my cell phone bill so I didn’t get much mail, but Violet sure did. Bills, bills, magazines, credit card offers … sure let’s get college kids to screw up their lives right out of the gate!
I came to a letter from the non-profit that gave me my grant and I ripped it open. My jaw fell at what I read.
My dad had recently remarried and they were dropping me! Apparently they were counting my step mom’s income and now I no longer qualified. I had received a large grant for college students of single parents, specifically for students whose parents died of cancer. It covered the bulk of my tuition and then I had a scholarship for a chunk of it too.
My knees gave out and I fell to the floor, re-reading the letter in disbelief. I was half way through my junior year and I was completely dependent on this money. My step-mom made okay money, but not enough to pony up enough for American University level tuition. She had a child of her own in ninth grade and received no child support for him. The only way I could even afford to live in D.C. was by having a roommate.
I immediately called my dad and told him ... and he was just as in shock. This was something nobody thought about but we should have. The whole reason they got married was to get Cynthia and her son on my dad’s insurance since her job didn’t offer it. So in helping them, I’m getting screwed!!
How the hell could I come up with money for next semester, hell for the next year?
I had a part-time job at a dollar store, but it was only 25 hours a week, just enough for my living expenses but literally no more. Dad also put a couple hundred a month in my bank account sometimes just because he’s awesome.
If I didn’t have Violet and her boyfriend to help split costs, there would be no way I’d make it. Her boyfriend lived close by so he wasn’t an official roommate, but he was here so much he helped out here and there.
I decided I needed to clear my head, let loose and just leave this worry for tomorrow. I never really went out, but I was newly 21 and I thought I deserved a night out. I had $48 in my wallet and I thought that should be enough to enjoy myself.
I called up my friend Kari and she was already going out, so she offered to swing by and pick me up.
“This club is really upscale though, dig deep in your closet for something hot but not trashy and shave everywhere … cause if you pick someone up he’s going to be older,” she warned.
I didn’t really want to pick someone up, I just wanted to shake my ass and feel a buzz.
I had nothing in my closet that would do so I ransacked Violet's and found the perfect thing. I had a crazy amount of long, thick hair and I knew I’d be sweating to death later so I put it up into braided pigtail buns, something a little cute.
I was just polishing off my lipstick when I saw Kari text that she was outside. I locked up and ran out, ready for whatever might await.
“Girl you look so fucking hot! I am so borrowing that dress sometime! So what’s the deal, you never want to go out,” Kari inquired.
“Yeah, just had a rough day, found out I’m losing my grant,” I said, defeated.
Kari gaped, “oh damn girl, that’s awful! Can they even do that like in the middle of the year, I mean damn!”
“I know, I’m going to call them but it doesn’t look good,” I said.
“Well we are going to forget about it for tonight! I’m telling you this place … you might just find a sugar daddy,” she said, laughing.
I threw her a stare, “yeah give up my body for money, like a hooker?”
“Oh come on, don’t be such a prude. It’s like being a girlfriend without the blah blah and having to meet the family and all that. I mean great sex and you get money, who could refuse,” she said, as if it was obvious.
“Do you do that? Do you have a sugar daddy,” I asked curiously.Kari laughed, “yeah I’ve done it a couple times, I had a serious one last year for a couple months but he moved away. Girl if I can do it, you can. You just kind of … detach yourself at first, but hope the sex is good enough you come to like it. Come on, when was the last time you even got laid??”
I sighed, “too long, close to a year.”
“A year?!” Kari looked shocked. “Girl we are getting you hooked up tonight, you need a booty call at bare minimum.” We arrived at the club and there was a massive line to get in, I was definitely not wearing shoes that I could just stand still in for two hours.
Kari and I hooked arms and she led me straight to the door where the bouncer smiled and opened the rope. Whaaat? “Come here often,” I said, in disbelief.
“Stick with me girlfriend, I know people,” she winked.
We made our way to the bar and ordered two drinks and two shots. We took the shots back and moved to a standing table with our drinks. I was feeling warm and swaying a bit when a guy approached, our eyes locked and then he immediately looked at Kari and swept her off to dance.
Yep! This is why I was in a horrible dry spell, nobody ever really looked at me. Hell I had only ever slept with two guys and both were long term relationships. I don’t know if I could even do a one-night stand.
I stood at the table, feeling awkward as hell. I was about to go back to the bar for another drink when a woman, of all people, approached me. She was at least in her 40’s but very attractive and dressed very classy.
“Hey sugar, you here alone,” she said. I gulped and wondered if she was hitting on me, I wasn’t very good at this stuff.
“Uhm, yeah my friend is here but she…” I stared out at the floor but I didn’t see Kari anywhere.
“Are you a student,” she asked. “Yep, I’m an international relations major,” I said. “Oh that’s different, so many are running around with majors they’ll never do anything with ... like me I went for philosophy if you can believe it! What a waste,” she finished.
Okay … this is hella awkward. What do I say here, what do I do?
I was completely puzzled and seriously starting to think this lady was hitting on me, I decided to break away and let her know I wasn’t interested.
“Well it was nice meeting you, I’m going to grab another drink,” I said, picking up my glass.
“I’m Haven,” she said, putting her hand over my free hand.
“Oh, yeah sorry, I’m Eve,” I said looking at her. “Eve, what a beautiful name,” she said, now staring at me.
What was happening right now?
She licked her lips, “do you have a boyfriend, Eve?” Okay now this was really weird … but I didn’t want to be rude.
“Nope, no boyfriend, just was out for a good time with my friend but I seem to have lost her,” I said looking around again, desperately hoping to see Kari.
Haven moved closer to me, and got in my ear, “I think you are perfect for what I’m looking for, why don’t you call me tomorrow and we’ll set up an interview?”
I looked down to see her handing me a business card.
A waitress came by just at that moment and Haven handed her a $50 bill, “more drinks for these girls, whatever they want. Hope to hear from you sugar, enjoy your night.”
I looked down at her card and it said it was for a talent agency, was she recruiting models or actors or something? Either way, what the hell? I was not even remotely model or actor material. Why did she care about my major too, nobody cares about a model’s intelligence. How bizarre!
I was lost in my thoughts staring at the card when the waitress came back. I downed the drink and texted Kari, telling her I was tired and just going to get a cab home. I charged an Uber to my credit card and made my way home.
I laid in bed looking at her card, and I googled the company name, “Talent Illusion.”
Weird.
It brought up a page that looked like it had models, but it was very basic and didn’t have a whole lot on it. They basically wanted you to make an appointment and go from there.
I thought about it all night, and finally decided it was just odd and shady. I then began researching student loans, I had three weeks until the new semester started.
It was about two and a half months into the new semester, and I remained optimistic that I would be able to be able to afford covering this semester at least. My dad took a chunk out of his savings and so did his wife, surprisingly! We didn't have the closest relationship but I think she felt rather guilty.
I knew in my bones it still probably wouldn't be enough, I was grasping for as many hours as possible, and even working overtime. There was no way I could keep this pace, working sometimes 50 hours a week and maintaining a full class schedule.
I was rummaging around a box of odds and ends and came across the card for Talent Illusion. I checked out their website again, and it was exactly the same.
I decided though, beggars can't be choosers and at this point, I didn't have anything to lose. It was almost spring break and I was about to ask my boss to work even more hours, but the idea of it made me sick.
I called the next morning and they asked if I could come in about 2:00 pm for an interview. I quickly showered and went to work on my hair as it was often times quite an undertaking. I flat ironed it a bit, then added some thick waves. My hair was naturally curly, but I rarely wore it that way.
I put on a business casual dress and some Mary Jane heels. I wanted to treat it like a job interview, I mean I presumed that’s what it was. I didn’t know if I should have a resume, a head-shot or what but they didn’t say so, I just went empty handed.
I got to the office, it was on the fourth floor of a large building in downtown D.C. I gave the desk clerk my name and took a seat. The clerk was absolutely gorgeous, if she wasn’t a model she should be. I immediately felt inadequate and out of my league.
A side door opened and Haven popped out, “Eve! So glad you came, please follow me.” I quickly got up and followed her, questioning everything.
Was my breath okay?
Was I sweating too much?
Did I seem desperate?
“Please have a seat,” Haven said, gesturing to the two chairs in front of her desk. She closed her office door and we both sat down.“Now I’m sure you have a lot of questions for me, especially since you didn't call right away. I’m not sure what you were expecting exactly but I will just come right out with what I do here. I am essentially a high-end matchmaker, I find dates for those with means, those who may need a date for a business dinner, or a gala-type event. I think you are a beautiful young lady, with a mind of her own that could surely hold a good conversation, do you think that is something you would be interested in?”My jaw fell open but I promptly shut it. What the hell … was she … a madam? Was this for real?“Uhm, I don’t quite know what to say honestly, I thought you were like a modeling agency, which is kind of why I was confused, I’m really not model material.
I threw myself on the couch, just wearing a towel, hoping my roommate wouldn’t come barging in any minute. My mind was racing, having the whole range of thoughts, emotions. I can do this, I can do this. There’s no sex … I can do this.I’m perfectly charming and capable of being fake, right? Jeez. It’s just acting, surely I can manage that. It’s a job dude, just a job, think of it that way, right?I forced myself to get up and get dressed, and look halfway decent. My phone chimed and I ran to it, “Chris has offered you a date.”Oh snap, here we go!I clicked on the message and it said, “Business dinner with four others, 7 pm tomorrow at Kinship. Would like to call you at 3 pm to discuss further details.”Okay girlie, this is it! I clicked to accept it. There was a call feature in the app kind of like Facebook has, so he could call me and I would not have to gi
“So is it serious with you guys,” Ashley said, as we both walked into the bathroom.Damn, talk about awkward, I really had to pee and I didn’t need an audience.“It’s pretty new, I like him a lot and he seems to feel the same. He’s very sweet but we’re still getting to know each other,” I said trying to be sincere but as neutral as possible.“HeISincredibly sweet and he deserves the best. Has he told you about Kendra, his ex,” Ashley demanded. She was now in my face and I wasn’t having this nonsense.“He’s told me what he wants me to know, like I said it’s all still new,” I walked away and into a stall. She stood by a sink but it sounded like she was right outside my door. Surely she had to pee too, I just watched her have like three drinks.“You better be good to him, but you need to understand h
I got changed out of my date clothes, taking great care to hang the dress so I didn’t mess it up. I got a shower and then threw myself on my bed and opened the date app.I took off my unavailable setting and immediately had a request pop up asking if I was free tomorrow night. I looked over the guy’s profile and it didn’t seem like anything too interesting.Four hours at a dance club from 10-2 am. Ugh, not only did I not dance unless drunk, I did NOT dance in heels.I was lost looking at the guy’s profile when I got another request, this time from Chris. I grinned like an idiot and went to his profile. I was curious to read it again now that I actually met him to see if it held up.Hmmm, seems just like him. I had to hope that other men wouldn’t be too bad, it’s not like I could afford to be picky with the kind of money I needed. I accepted both dates and turned off the lig
I didn’t have another date until my tennis date with Chris and I was glad for that. Three dates this week and I was on track to make $1,200 … is this my life now?Hard to turn it down. Next week was spring break and I hoped to book a date every night.I got up early before my tennis date and ran into the salon, opting for another flat ironed high ponytail and light make up. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be sweating and I tended to sweat easily.Chris messaged me his address and confirmed the time to meet him. If I hadn’t already decided I was comfortable with him, there’s no way in hell I’d go to his house. Turned out he had a penthouse apartment in a building where I probably couldn’t afford to rent three square feet.I went to the front desk and gave my name. The person came out from around the desk and waived for me to follow him. He led me to an elevator and I followed him in. He swiped a
I could not possibly have felt more out of my element in this place. Since it was still cold out we were watching the tennis match in a large indoor gym.Chris made sure he was always touching me in some way, whether it was holding my hand or just putting his arm around me. It was incredibly relaxing and I sensed he could tell I needed it.Caleb, the client was just as pompous and annoying as expected. He was also quite a sore loser and that seemed to be all he was doing. His wife and their whole posse were equally stuck up and irritating. His wife was dressed in a yellow pantsuit and had one a ton of jewelry and make-up, she looked pretty ridiculous honestly.I didn’t understand much about tennis but it didn’t seem like he was even very good. Between things he would come over and talk business with Chris and I just tried to play along, completely checking out mentally.Lunch was served family style with se
I heard his towel drop and then his hands were on my hips, with his fingers playing at the top of my panties. I leaned back into him and his lips found my neck again. He pushed my panties down and I stepped out of everything. He walked me forward toward the tub and moved around me, getting in. He held his hand out for mine and helped me in, his eyes darting all over me. I had never felt more exposed and yet I wasn’t scared or nervous, I didn’t try to cover myself. He obviously wanted me, and my pussy was saying there was no going back. She was in control now and I was just along for the ride.Hmm, ride I thought …Chris slid against the tub and I fell to my knees with my hand against his chest for balance. He immediately grabbed my hips and thrust me toward him, rippling the water. He crashed his lips to mine and our tongues found each other, it was so intense we were both panting after just a minute
We made our way toward the elevator, and Chris wasted no time filling me in on some of his family gossip.“So my dad has actually been married three times, yet he thinks he’s the world’s foremost resource on relationship advice.I am from his first marriage, my mom lives in NYC. That’s where they were for a long time, we lived there until I was 16, then they split. He was sleeping with his lawyer, the classic story you know. They didn’t have a prenup though, I mean he didn't have much when they first met. My mom ever imagined he would screw her over like he tried to do. My mom got a lawyer that wasn't afraid of him, and really fought him, he was horrible to her, there’s a lot there I don’t get into but it’s touchy for me.In the end she got what she was owed and I don’t think they have spoken since. He remarried a few years later, but that didn’t last too long but th
~Heath’s Point of View~This is it, the day I’ve been waiting for my whole life. My perfect redhead, my dream girl. Only she’s not a dream, she’s real, and she loves me. She loves me and she’s giving me a baby.I couldn’t even wrap my head around it all still, and I just knew I’d cry at the wedding. I hated that my dad couldn’t be here, but it meant everything to me that we could speed things along for my mom’s sake.I’d had dinner sent to Liz’s room, Chinese food to honor our first night together. I had a special fortune cookie made for Beth with a slip of paper in it, asking her to marry me. Around the paper was an engagement ring. She wasn’t going to be allowed to come see me t
~Beth’s Point of View~I had started wondering when we might all go back home, but everyone seemed to be happy out here and I didn’t want to rock the boat or seem as if I didn’t like it. Heath really liked being able to see his family, and I did greatly enjoy his mom. There had been a couple times I caught everybody whispering like, hushed voices. They’d shut right up and move on once they saw me. I just thought it was stuff about Miss Reba, but I was starting to get annoyed.Heath better never keep stuff from me, and if he did, I’d punch him in the nuts!Heath’s sisters went on and on at dinner one night about some spa in town, and I didn’t care for that stuff. But as they went on I started to reckon that a m
~Eve’s Point of View~We had been out at the Jackson ranch through Christmas, and it was certainly a much more different Christmas than I would have imagined a month ago.I also wasn't thrilled to have my ankle in a cast but I was dealing with it. There was still total radio silence on Haven and her brother, but Derek still had everyone possible trying to track them down.At last count, his hackers were able to recover about $39 million of the ransom, which we all thought was pretty remarkable. It was great to meet Heath’s family, and they were the distraction that I think we all needed. They knew nothing about what had happened to Beth and I, and I was so glad for it. Being around our group would have given me nothing but sad, pitiful faces.
~Beth’s Point of View~“Ugh my momma keeps callin’, lemme see what she wants,” I said to Heath.I ran out of the hospital waiting room and into a stairwell.“Hey momma,” I said, answering the phone.“Bethany I have only talked to you twice in the past month, and now you’re onto only texting me all the time. Explain yourself young lady,” she said.Oh shit.“Well I did text you at least,” I said, lying.Heath had texted her from my phone since it was recovered when they found the car we were abducted in.I h
The cops were trying to get ahold of the landlord to ask about breaking out a wall or taking up the floor and I didn’t give a fuck about all that. I’d buy him a new goddamn building if wasn’t in on the scheme.About four hours went by and I was seriously losing any ounce of patience I had left.Heath had me on speakerphone in his pocket so I could roughly hear what was being said inside.I heard a guy in the crowd yell that he was the landlord and I immediately rushed him but Mick held me back.A cop went at him, “sir we believe there is a kidnapping victim being held here, is there a basement or a false wall anywhere?”“What, someone was kidnapped? You think they are here?”
~Derek’s Point of View~It had now been nearly two days since Beth was released and I was really close to losing my shit. There was just nothing more we could do, we were totally helpless. The kidnappers had been more than careful and if I hadn’t been so insaney furious I might have admired their work. They had to have slipped up at some point, we just had to catch a break. It was extremely illegal but Mick was running the photo we got of the driver from a street camera through the DMV. It was the middle of the night and everyone was half asleep or actually asleep.Heath and Beth had been holed up in his place and I didn’t want to bother them, not that I had any news.I was in the kitchen
*Warning, this chapter depicts an assault*~Eve’s Point of View~I guessed it to be about a day since they snatched Beth away from me. The whole speech I gave at first about us having a united front and not showing we were scared was pretty much going out the window.I didn’t know what the hell Derek was doing, did he not give them all the money? I had no clue. Since they took Beth nobody has come back. I don’t have much food left and I’m starting to have to fill up my water bottles in the sink.Maybe they’ll just leave me here to starve, I thought. No, they said they wanted me, they have to want me for something … sex? I mean they hadn’t so far t
~Derek’s Point of View~Our hackers were working non-stop to trace the money we already sent. As soon as it hit the bank it went to three other accounts and so on. It seemed like they were just trying to put it through so many places to keep it from being traced but we weren’t giving up.We had the FBI and different forensics teams monitoring the video they made the girls take, but we were getting nothing there.I was completely torn on whether or not to send the rest of the money … I didn’t care about the actual money of course but just the fact that I would be sending it with no guarantee of getting them. After some back and forth we went ahead and sent another 15 million, and decided to wait and see if they responded.
~Heath’s Point of View~All I could think about was how scared the girls had to be. My poor little Beth, my innocent little Beth. She’s never even remotely experienced something like this. I had a Bronze Star, I’d been shot down behind enemy lines. I’d known hand to hand combat, I’d know the terror of a real fight.I never wanted her to have to know anything like that.Derek was in full on control freak mode. This was supposed to be my domain, security. But everything seemed to be moving around me in slow motion, I couldn’t focus. The FBI was able to track down the car and in it was a note with instructions. They wanted 50 million dollars wired over ten different bank accounts.
