She tossed and turned and moved and stilled until her sheets were off and her mind was creeping with activity. When sleep overflew her, an hour after she laid on an uncomfortable, rock-hard bed, it wasn't deep. It was hollowed, like in a haze.
She never dreamed, all she ever saw was a pitch-black hole. It kept growing and growing. Meanwhile, her body would convulse and spasms would shake her to the core. It would start with her head curving left and right and continue with her hands twisting into painful positions. It would reach her feet which would throb harder and faster in a sickening fashion until she fell on the bed.
The shock would wake her up, and today was no different. For a minute, she wouldn't be able to apply strength to her muscles. Slowly, her sensations would come back and when she could finally rise, it was the end of the nightmare.
She checked the clock, with its taller needle pointing at the 4. Sighing in the air, she gave up on sleep and went to her kitchen. Rubbing her scalp, she slowly poured herself a cup of coffee. While she sat on the chair, she siped on the disgusting black liquid. When she finished swallowing the drink, she looked around her tiny apartment, searching for an occupation to make the hours flow by. Her mind kept circling back to the event taking place at dawn.
She had been waiting for a year now. Right after acquiring those stupid documents, she went ahead and handed them over. It was a little bit over midnight. Now, they were in the process of being analyzed and scanned to be added to her profile. It was a long process and she hoped she hadn't taken too much time completing her last task. Not that it was her fault.
Those missions were given randomly to those who applied to them. At night, when she would just wake up or even when she was about to go to bed, a note would be slipped to her. In various kinds of ways, let your imagination flow. They normally contained the minimal required information, so deciphering them was your first step. Some would be hard, others were far too easy. She would turn the roulette, praying for luck.
She had always wanted to give a piece of her mind to those in charge, except she couldn't. So she roamed around her salon, venting her anger to the molecules of oxygen. She thought it took her at least an hour when she hadn't even spent ten minutes on her shitty talk.
The idea of calling or texting did pass through her, but she knew it would tick the both of them off. Not that she minded that inconvenience, but that would mean that they wouldn't respond. So she continued tormenting herself with boredom when suddenly, she heard a big sound coming from her laptop. Dragging her heels there, she reluctantly when into her emails.
On top of unread emails, was standing one from the Conquerors. That's when pressure and anxiety kicked in. The first word she saw was "Congratulations Miss Velàsquez ". And with those, excitement took over. She read the paragraph, not really understanding any of the points mentioned, just knowing she made it.
She stood up and showed around a toothy smile to the invisible crowd she was imagining and waved her hand, turning it sideways. " For I am a woman of this millennium and shall out best others. Praise my name for I made it." she recited in a distinguished manner.
She jumped around and spin a couple of times while heading toward her closet. Today was to be a special occasion. Due to this fact, she opted for letting her hair loose, instead of tying it into the low ponytail she was tired of. Her dull eyes held vivacity for the first time in a long and to accentuate their maroon color she added makeup. She picked a black dress from the hanger and stared in disbelief when she wore it and glanced at her reflection in the glass. For one, she didn't act humble and said it.
"I'm beautiful. "
She grabbed her phone and headed out but didn't lock her door: there wasn't anything worth stealing inside and she always lost her key.
She arrived at the tallest building on the outskirts of town. The flora - the dancing grass, the marveling flowers growing abundantly- emphasized the structure of the building. High in floors and rather big, this Conquerors branch wasn't the prettiest nor was it the strongest. They were rather moderate in any data in general. The difference with this one was that it served as a home for wolves.
Over the years, strong and weak wolves had joined, making it one big - happy or unhappy- family. So would the rumors go. She believed it was more a dysfunctional family than anything else.
She stepped into the grand floor hall and didn't spend more than a minute there. The platinum blond hair receptionist didn't greet her. She only looked away and while the elevator door was closing Raïna heard faint murmurs.
On the fifth floor, the elevator stopped, permitting her to head out straight to Edward's office. She knocked but didn't receive an answer back. She then flung open the door and stepped in to see him, a girl on his lap. He was washing her amygdala and deep cleaning the interior of her mouth.
Sighing, she went ahead and positioned herself in front of the make-out session. She coughed and he finally looked up at her, his tongue still rubbing hers.
"Could you do this someplace else or hum, I don't know, GET A ROOM. " She shouted.
"What's the big deal? It's not like I'm committing murder, at least not right now. " He counterattacked. The girl was trying to hide her face while getting off him. It's just then that Raïna saw her with only her panties on-if the thin fabric of tissue she had between her legs could be called that. She picked up the rest of her clothes and went out.
"Why her? I thought you hated Lizzy. " Raïna asked.
"Yeah, I do but she knows how to kiss," he smirked at his own comment. She slapped him playfully.
"No, but for real, what did she want? "
"Couldn't do some of her mission so she wants me to falsify her profile, the basic. " he shrugged. Raïna erupted into a boastful laugh.
"People do that nowadays?! I thought it was only in movies that it happened! "
"I would kill to have that power. "
"That's mean, you lied to her. " their eyes made contact and they both chuckled.
Two faces entered the room and went to high-five Raïna and Edward.
"Congratulations Raïna, I knew you could do it," Amy said without shame.
"But aren't you the one who told me I could never make it in only a year? " Raïna asked, staring at Amy.
"Same thing. " Amy crossed her arms and sat down. She was a cream blonde, short girl. Despite her cute looks and her warm personality, her words stang, and she never saw the world in pink, despite her glasses being pink.
" Let's be real, it is a miracle you made it," Leneay stated. If Amy was the baby then she would be the mother. Taller than Amy, brown-haired, Leneay was a role model for her peers. The rational one, the overstressed one, it was all her.
They both had found help in this tower and for them, it was their home.
"Miracle nothing, it was all me and my hard-working butt. Get that straight. " Raïna fired back, closing the debate.
"Well, whatever, Delusional, but if you want to officially become a Captain then we better get going. " Amy said, standing up. She arranged her pink long skirt and waited for Raïna.
Raïna stared at her, incomprehension was written on her face, " Amy, the ceremony is this night, we have time" She explained. Amy finished putting on some lip gloss and responded.
"I know. I meant if you don't buy us dinner, I won't let you walk on that podium to reclaim your prize, I want sushi. " She picked up her little pink bag and walked over to the door, opening it.
"Amy, shouldn't we do so after she received the red envelope? And shouldn't we pay for it? " Leneay informed. Amy snapped at her and shrugged.
"You wanna pay? Fine. I just want sushi, now. " She put her hand on her forehead and voiced out to herself" Jesus, God, why did you give me Delusional and Uptight? " She shook her head and headed out followed by Leneay who just always followed her.
"Spoiled brat," Edward murmured when they headed out making Raïna smile sadly. She could act like that sometimes but there was more to her.
Raïna turned to Edward and asked whether he wanted to come.
"Sorry, got things to handle. Unlike you, I have responsibilities and work to do" He exclaimed. Raïna rolled her eyes.
"Oh please, you don't tend to any of your work, Lazy. " She teased, closing the doors behind her before the book came flying right on her face. She laughed in her hand and joined Amy and Leneay in bickering about whatever she didn't care about.
---------------------
Sometime later, after the ice cream, walk in the park, the little shopping, and the restaurant, the girls were tired and full having stuffed themselves with sushi and so on.
"Ahh, this is life! I wished we had days off more often. " Amy sighed as she stretched. " We should get going now, I don't wanna miss Nathaniel. "
"You've been talking about that boy for weeks now. Are you dating him, sex-buddy? What is it? " Raïna asked standing up and walking to the exit of the restaurant.
"Leneay choked on her water before commenting. " Sex-buddy?!?! What do you mean sex-buddy? It better not be that! "
"Why not, she can do the deed when she wants. "
"The what?! "
"The deed, hook up, the dance with no pants. I mean, you know this part in biology you skipped because you weren't at school, but in the forest being raised by hyenas or whatever. " Raïna explained, making fun of Leneay.
"It's not like you're one to talk. But no, it's just a crush. A silly, stupid crush. Now let's go. "
While Leneay continued asking Amy for reassurance and Raïna continued laughing, they headed for the dark alley, between the two restaurants. A growl was heard and leaping toward the base was three humanoid figures: a blue eye one, a pink one, and a yellow one.
------------------
They entered the front hall and stopped talking. People were peering at the one behind the trio, wishing they were at her place.
" All that's left to do is to reclaim your prize. " Edward joined coming from behind surprising the girls.
"Oh my god! I thought it was a ghost! " Leneay exclaimed and Amy slapped her gently on the shoulder. Wonder who was the mother.
"Right, the ceremony. Then let's go. " Raïna walked to the grand ball area decorated for the occasion. Almost, everybody was there, and so were those who applied for the post. She went onto the podium and the referee began talking, making his big speech about the "effort made from our volunteer in making the world a better place for wolves" etc while Raïna eyed the desserts with hungry eyes.
Until a smell caught her attention. It smelled of the forest, of blood, of danger. The smell stimulated her nose and became intoxicating as it got stronger and stronger. It made her ears tingle and her heart sting. It beat faster and faster until a man walked in front of her, pass her and a pang of agony flowed in.
The next thing she knew, her eyes searched him and suddenly they found each other.
The two persons in front of her received their marks and when it came to her turn, the scent filled her nose. She felt shivers run down her spine. She moved to stand in front of Master. Leader of the Conquerors, Master was an enigma. His name was hidden and he didn't often make an act of presence. Except for today. When he looked down at her, he saw brown pupils staring back at him. They were shining in the dim light of the podium, glowing in the dark. He drove in them, searching for darkness. That's when he saw red and blood. Trauma. She, on the other hand, scanned him. First, his dark unruly hair, then his pitch-black eyes, and his brown glass skin. He had the feel of a wise man with a hint of danger. His body shouted to stay away, but it was also magnetic, pulling her in. Immaculate. It was like a starring contest, neither moving. Until she parted her mouth, wanting to say something. That's when he blinked and grabbed her by the waist. The next word that would leave her mouth,
Raïna walked away, blabbering about how happy she was to have been promoted before she let the silence fill in. She was staring at the red envelope in her hands with a gentle smile as she swung it left and right. It had his sent on it. " Girls? " She suddenly interpellated them. They both turned their heads around and waited. " What do you think it feels like to see your mate for the first time? " "Seriously, we were just off the topic and you brought it back. " Amy sneered, rolling her eyes. Leneay's eyes sparkled at the question. "It must be the most beautiful thing in history. It's meeting your one and only, your forever. It must be magical, like in a fairy tale. Your eyes caught him, your body feeling the desire, ooooh no, I know the best moment, It'd be when you understand it's him. Just imagine the relief of not having to search anymore. I'm sure it's how mentioned in the books, the best moment of your life. " Raïna cringed at how lovey-dovey it all seemed, but she understood
His legs were beginning to hurt from standing up for so long, waiting for the childish man to return. He could only wonder what was happening downstairs to those poor enslaved people, and other unlucky others he forgot the identities of. Grazing his foot on the floor repeatedly to put his stress somewhere, he turned his head toward the large, bloody red clock stuck on the wall higher than it should. Almost three hours since Akyl had gone out. "10 more minutes." He stared at the arrows with a pounding heart and when the little one reached the 9, he was out. "What's the fuss about? " Raïna asked hurriedly with dark circles under her eyes and a cup of black coffee in her left hand walking hesitantly into the room. She got a friendly smile from Leneay who began worrying about her health meanwhile Amy walked away. "Nobody knows, not even me, which is surprising. Even Edward couldn't tell us, but I think it got something to do with the Master's presence here and for the sake of Jesus, let
He was staring at a blank spot in his office. Maybe he was watching a story unfold on this blank spot, that's how captivated he was. Stephen often wondered why this particular spot and wanted to ask. He had once. And it ended up a bloody mess. So he won't. Akyl's eyes flickered to Stephen. " What's the planning for today? " Stephen raised his glasses and opened the white iPad. "Ah! An auction is planned at 9 in the afternoon and yes, you have to make an act of presence. " He said, cutting his hopes. " You don't have anything else planned for the day, weirdly enough. " Akyl slammed his hands on the table and stretched his neck. " I want to meet with Alpha Mezdoxa of Blue Night's pack and his beta." He stopped on his track. " Ask if their Luna can be there too. The sooner the better. " Stephen marked it down and went to call the pack while mumbling. " Dump people." Akyl didn't follow through with the conversation Stephen had on the phone even if his acute hearing caught glimpses of
She was dressed in an elegant bow of brinish shade, transparent of sorts enabling others to see her undercover. Her cleavage was teased in the V-neck while her blond meche fell in the meantime as the tears of happiness flowed on her rosy cheek. A ray of sunshine made her skin glow. "Welcome back, Minerva. " A warm smile spread her lips as she got further down on her knees, bowing as low as she could. "Pleased to be of service. " Stephen was flabergasted. Her steps were feather-like, silent as the night sky. The door was still locked and the window hadn't been opened—a genius between geniuses. There was a dangerous aroma in the air of hurt and pain. Stephen trailed the scent to encounter blood. It was sprinkled in discontinued stains on her hands and on the floor. Stephen favored sweet-scented blood, girls. "Do you need me to free you, master, since an incompetent fellow couldn't protect you? " She asks, shouting daggers at
She stared astonished as Messe was twirling on the platform. Kyle was in a defensive position, arms in front to protect his head, and was taking slow, cautious steps away from her. Messe's style of fighting surely had to do with her unknown background. She was very volatile and seemed to be dancing instead of fighting, as gracious as a ballerina, giving off the pretense of being weak and naive. Kyal wasn’t fooled. He knew that the control she had came from excessive training and that there was strength concealed behind. Raïna watched the match unfold as Messe voraciously attacked and Kyal barely blocked her consecutive punches and kicks coming from various directions. Soon, Kyal was on the floor and Messe was helping him stand up. They both came to her and slightly bent down, acknowledging her position. She waved them out to the next training ground which had been made into another examination place. She had been assigned to te
She slowed down when she oversaw the glade in view in less than a few kilometers. Her air caught in her lungs rushed down rapidly and she eventually felt soreness in her limbs for having run at such a fast pace during prolongated laps of time. She walked lazily until the shuddering cry of Madoxe replayed in her ears and she compelled her legs to walk faster. She had been so focused on advancing that she only noticed the flames when she stood in front of the glade, which wasn't the nature park with hundreds of different flowers and bright colors it used to be. It seemed like a village. No, she instantly corrected herself after viewing the taller house standing in front of the smaller ones, it's a pack. Or she thought, considering that the fire was engulfing every habitation and proliferating with no blue-eyed or green-eyed wolf to stop it. Instead, she eyesight the red-eyed wolf who undoubtedly started this horrible carnage.Walking down the sole street-like
"Can you stand?" she asked Milene even if the answer was obvious. " I will. " Raïna was surprised she said so, but didn't object. She helped her stand up and guided her through the maze of corpses and crying wolves. None of the villagers looked at their Luna or came to ask about her state. They merely looked the other way and Raïna saw a hatred that burned deep down. Milene also wasn't crying as she was abandoning the pack, what was supposed to be the most terrible and atrocious event that could happen to a wolf. Wasn't this her home? But as they made it into the glade and then into the forest, Milene looked behind and closed her eyes. When she opened them, she noticed Raïna staring a lifted the corners of her lips. "I'm well. Really. " Raïna wagged her head and walked ahead, wondering who she was trying to convince. The path was rough and Milene had difficulty walking and even seemed drowsy. Blood kept on flowing from her unattended wounds. "Who asked you to save me? " She sudden
"That wrench! That unworthy daughter my even stupider wife had given birth to hadn't come home still. " Anger boiled in his veins as Asher Remillians stood in front of the gentlemen. The only moment in her life when she could be useful was the exact moment she wasn't in his possession anymore. That infuriated the man even more as looks of reprimand played on the gentleman's face. He, who valued his pride more than anything, had no choice but to ask for their help. He knew that he simply couldn't go against the Conquerors with the fake power he had accumulated. "Asher, we will let you borrow our power for this fight alone. " The tallest gentleman, with a black fabric covering his eyes said. He had long been declared as their chief. " You have one chance Asher, one. We will only go against the Conquerors for only one battle. " He spoke slowly, instigating fear in the forty-year-old man. His baritone voice went lower and lower as his speech continued. " If, by mistake, you couldn't bring
Her heart thumped in her chest, and she could only hear the pounding of it, resonating like a tambour. She feared what her face looked like and a glance at his made her understand that she was doing a poor job of hiding how scared she was. She took several breaths, trying to calm down enough so she could talk, but her lips were quivering and she felt as if she was drowning as the seconds became minutes. He got up, came closer to her, and sat down in front of her, on the floor. She understood what he meant and sat down too, realizing that her entire body was shaking with the kind of panic she hadn't experienced in a long time. She crossed her legs and rhythmed her intake of breath with his. A couple of seconds later, she felt better. "Start at the beginning, " he said. She nodded her head and took out her phone, but faltered. No matter how needed it was that he saw the messages, it would mean everything would be revealed. It certainly didn't please her that he learned everything like
The days flew by, and a routine installed itself in their daily life. In the morning, she would cook breakfast and he made sure to always be there while she cooked. He wished he could help her, and had tried once, which resulted in a catastrophe, a mess they spent an hour cleaning afterward. Every single day, he inquired what breakfast would be, delighted by whatever it could be. For a reason that he could not grasp, she never made plain old cereals, the fastest, cheapest breakfast there was. Not that he complained. She would cook lunch, a simple sandwich or a soup or a salad, and would simply give it to him before smiling at him warmly and exiting. After that, they would dress and leave to go through the day. He soon realized that her help grandly benefitted him. She mostly provided support to Stephen and helped ensure the good functioning of the pack. It took a lot of workload off Stephen's shoulders which enabled him to fasten the paperwork and improved their efficiency. He
The night was high in the sky as she watched the moon she so adored. How things had changed in not even a few days! She should be falling asleep but his smell was everywhere. Her thoughts were fuzzy with the memory of his eyes and his lip and her embarrassment. So close, a few inches and she would have felt those plum lips on hers, and how badly she wanted that wasn't human. You are not human, stupid. His odor enveloped her in a tight embrace, surrounding her with a calmness, a stillness she had not felt in a while before falling into a world of dreams. When she woke up that morning, she looked beside her, where she had left her phone. 6 am, it read. 4 hours of sleep probably weren't enough for the stressful day ahead of her, but it would have to suffice. She shook the covers off her body and put her left foot on the cold wood floor. She had been pleasantly surprised that her affairs had been brought to the huge complex. She looked around again, still believing she was dreaming. Fo
Akyl had blood on his hands. Not the image of people he had assassinated over the past decade but the liquid that flows through the arteries. He tried to recall how he stained his hands and clothes but ultimately gave up: his memories were too fuzzy. He looked around, confused. Where was Stephen? Why wasn't he in proximity? Since when was he left all alone like this? That's when he noticed: his hands were shaking, his heart was pounding furiously and his eyes began spinning. It was the closest to afraid he had been in years. But afraid of what, there was nothing. Precisely. But then, it stops. As suddenly as it came, the ushers in his heart calmed down, his view cleared out, and his hands stopped moving. Slowly, he began the hear a familiar voice and slowly came back to himself. "Akyl, do you hear me?" The worried voice asked. " For the MoonGodness sake, answer! " Akyl finally opened his eyes to see his best friend on the verge of crying. It calmed him down, knowing someone cared an
"Well, that is what's called being frivolous. " Quevelerin commented as the doors to Ballroom 243 opened. Alpha Milan's room didn't resemble the others in the least. When the others were glamourous and polished, detailed, having been under the gaze of professionals to coordinate an assemblage of colors that would flourish the room, this one was particularly simple. Various colors were not coordinated. It felt as if a painter had splashed his paint bucket on the floor and walls, on the decorations and the furniture. Raïna turned her head slowly, she felt like in a museum or an exposition, admiring abstract art. "He's indeed a bit weird, Vinn Milan. " She meant it in a good way. Her eyes searched for the life of the party but once she saw the crowd, she didn't see the tall, powerful, all-muscles macho wearing a hoodie and skinny jeans she was expecting. She was staring at a man in a wheelchair being pushed around by an athletic man who seemed in his late 30s. "Is it him?", she asked, p
"Why does it come to you so easily to call me mate? " She wondered about that fact for a while now. She had trouble still adapting to the recent changes and the chemicals were still making her head feel fuzzy. "To what are you referring to? " He retorqued as they proceeded to the ballroom where a poor werewolf was about to meet his end. "Exactly what I said. Your way of calling me by what I am is disturbing, use my name. " She had picked another glass of wine, having soon realized that she was starting to like the feeling of being poisoned, with this type of chemicals at least; her wolf could easily digest them and they made the anxiety flutter away for a short while. Stephen who was hearing the conversation from behind them grinned slightly, being only too familiar with Akyl's way of speaking. "But anybody can call you Raïna, sole I can call you mate. Isn't it more beneficial to use the privilege I have to the full extent? " he casually brought her closer to him and started walki
He held her close, proximity enabling her to smell him. It smelled of forest, of burning wood, and male. His arm had snaked behind her waist and tugged her closer to him. He didn't seem fazed by his actions, and she appreciated the defensive posture he had taken. The inside of the Manoir was more elaborate than the exterior. The marble floor, the high ceilings, and the numerous paintings' beauty were accentuated by the chandelier light being reflected upon every place of the grand entry. She was in awe in front of the clusters of sculpted supernatural. As soon as they stepped into the hall, eyes turned in their direction. Raïna could feel their stares as they advanced and could hear the murmurs. "Don't be intimidated, a lot of them have fake jewelry, and others have been abandoned by their mates. They are jealous of you because you are better. Don't let anybody question you're right to be here. " Akyl murmured in her ear. She felt his lip brush her earlobe and felt goosebumps erupt
Stephen carefully walked into Akyl's office, taking precautions to not step on the papers on the floor. Akyl was sleeping in the canopy bed fully clothed. It wasn't a rare occurrence to see him sleeping in the late afternoon. He was in black attire: a black velvet Italian suit and a double-breasted blazer. His uncombed hair spread on his face, the curls had grown too fast, and his white leather gloves were laying next to him. Stephen contemplated the idea of waking him up so they could go and fetch his date. But as he looked at his sleeping boss/best friend, another idea crossed his mind: he could lie down with him. After all the work and cases they handled these past 3 days, didn't they deserve a break? But he knew this thought to be bad, undisciplined, and wrong. He passed his hand through his dark ominous hair and caressed his brown skin. He wished he could feel the little hairs there usually were on his beard but unfortunately, he had shaved. He wished he could see those dark b
