A glimpse of him

The two persons in front of her received their marks and when it came to her turn, the scent filled her nose. She felt shivers run down her spine. She moved to stand in front of Master.

Leader of the Conquerors, Master was an enigma. His name was hidden and he didn't often make an act of presence. Except for today.

When he looked down at her,  he saw brown pupils staring back at him. They were shining in the dim light of the podium, glowing in the dark. He drove in them, searching for darkness. That's when he saw red and blood. Trauma.

She, on the other hand, scanned him. First, his dark unruly hair, then his pitch-black eyes, and his brown glass skin. He had the feel of a wise man with a hint of danger. His body shouted to stay away, but it was also magnetic, pulling her in. Immaculate.

It was like a starring contest, neither moving. Until she parted her mouth, wanting to say something. That's when he blinked and grabbed her by the waist. The next word that would leave her mouth, he didn't know why but he was scared of them. Pushing her face into his torso, the words came out muffled.

In his arms, the world disappeared. It felt warm and pleasant, not safe tho. It was like anything could happen. It felt right.

Murmurs raised in the crowd of wolves. Eyes were changing colors in a fist of anger. Master threw them a glance which calmed them, but the word was circulating and soon the whole crowd was whispering and gossiping.

Finally aware of her surrounding, Raïna got away from his embrace and knelt in front of him. He put his hand on her shoulders and let the power flow into her. It came abruptly, enveloping her into a layer of mystic power. It took a minute or so for her body to adapt and for her bones to stop cracking all over. On her neck appeared a white hammer, a symbol of the Captains.

She stood up but looked down, wanting to avoid his gaze. He extend his hand and gave her the red envelope. When she took it, she couldn't help her roaming hands linger on his a tad longer than they should have. She felt goosebumps before shaking the feeling away and going in the line with the others two new Captains.

Everybody knelt, as one man, to salute Master while he made his way out of the hall through the private door at the other side of the room. When the doors closed, the smell lingered before it dissipated.

People started to go their way, and she caught many people glaring at her. She was about to do the same when she was stopped by someone tapping on her shoulder. She turned around to see a cute girl with red hair.

"Hey! Nice to meet you, I'm Isabella, call me Isa, and he ( she pointed to the short man behind her ) is Nathaniel, call him Nath. We're the two others who just became a captain with you. We couldn't get acquainted before the ceremony, you know, since you were not there. We thought we'd say hi. "

"Oh, sorry, I had a little problem, that's why. But nice to meet you two, I'm- "

"No need to present yourself, you're Raïna from the 6 division, aren't you? "

"How do you know my name? "

"Well, for your information, you're quite well known. Aren't you the one who was able to become a Captain the first year she arrived, and the only one able to compete against Lieutenant Edward? "

"Oh, yeah, I suppose that's me. "

" You're quite the funny girl, aren't you ?! " Raïna didn't understand what she meant by " funny girl " so she just smiled at the remark.

"We're gonna get going, we want to announce the news to some friends. I'm sure we're going to spend a lot of time together in the future days, as new Captains. We should stick together! "

" Yeah..."

"Bye-bye! "

She waved them goodbye, more than happy that this conversation was over. Raïna was not used to this outgoing personality. Neither Amy, Leaneay nor her were this outgoing and carefree. They were quite timid with new people, so the exuberant  Isa was not going to be a real pleasure to work with, she could already feel it.

She started walking toward Amy and Leneay who were frozen. Getting to their level, she saw Amy slap her forehead and Leneay gawking at the podium.

"Jesus, God, why me? Why did you give me such an idiot as a friend? " Amy kept asking as Leneay stared at her in disapproval.

"Now, now Amy, don't say that. It may be true but it's mean to throw it at her face. " Leneay commented, slowly turning her head to Raïna.

"What?!" She asked on the defensive.

"Raïna, Master hugged you. " Leneay said. " Do you have something to say in your defense? "

" I tripped, and he caught me. " What a quick liar she was. She knew the guilt would flow in soon.

"Huh?" they both responded. They expected anything but that.  " What do you think it could have been?! It was my first meeting Master from up close, of course, I panicked. " She kept lying on and on, with those huge expressions she would give once in a while and convinced both.

"If you say so."

"Then explain something else," Amy demanded. She still looked angry. "Why were you talking to Nathaniel and that bitch step-sister of his. I demand an explanation, and it better be good!"

Raïna remembered the crush she had on Nathaniel and taught as to what she saw in him. " They came to talk to me. Honestly, he didn't even speak, it was Isabella who did all the talking. "

Amy squinted her eyes, but finally gave up. " If you say so. but you better not stole him from me. " She threatened. Raïna raised her hand playfully as if Amy was a cop.

Leneay sadly smiled at the scene and interrupted them. " Amy, have you ever looked in his eyes, without your glasses?"

Amy and Raïna stopped laughing and Amy harshly looked at Leneay while Raïna sighed. She just always had the bad habit of bringing her opinion where it wasn't needed.

"Stop it, Leneay. We ain't all like you, wanting to wait for our mate. " she spit out. Amy has an even bigger habit, of being stubborn at the wrong moment. " So what if he isn't my mate, why should I wait for a man that I only have 1 chance in 7 billion to find?! Let loose, Leneay! "

Leneay's jaw ticked and her fist tightened.

"Come on, girls, it's my promotion, don't fight!  " Raïna said. " You both need to chill. A good night of sleep is gonna cool your head down. "

She pushed leneay slowly. " Come on! " they started walking to the end of the grand hall, with fake smiles plastered on everyone's faces.

Raïna walked away, blabbering about how happy she was to have been promoted before she let the silence fill in. She was staring at the red envelope in her hands with a gentle smile as she swung it left and right. It had his sent on it. " Girls? " She suddenly interpellated them. They both turned their heads around and waited. " What do you think it feels like to see your mate for the first time? " "Seriously, we were just off the topic and you brought it back. " Amy sneered, rolling her eyes. Leneay's eyes sparkled at the question. "It must be the most beautiful thing in history. It's meeting your one and only, your forever. It must be magical, like in a fairy tale. Your eyes caught him, your body feeling the desire, ooooh no, I know the best moment, It'd be when you understand it's him. Just imagine the relief of not having to search anymore. I'm sure it's how mentioned in the books, the best moment of your life. " Raïna cringed at how lovey-dovey it all seemed, but she understood

His legs were beginning to hurt from standing up for so long, waiting for the childish man to return. He could only wonder what was happening downstairs to those poor enslaved people, and other unlucky others he forgot the identities of. Grazing his foot on the floor repeatedly to put his stress somewhere, he turned his head toward the large, bloody red clock stuck on the wall higher than it should. Almost three hours since Akyl had gone out. "10 more minutes." He stared at the arrows with a pounding heart and when the little one reached the 9, he was out. "What's the fuss about? " Raïna asked hurriedly with dark circles under her eyes and a cup of black coffee in her left hand walking hesitantly into the room. She got a friendly smile from Leneay who began worrying about her health meanwhile Amy walked away. "Nobody knows, not even me, which is surprising. Even Edward couldn't tell us, but I think it got something to do with the Master's presence here and for the sake of Jesus, let

Stephen often wondered why this particular spot and wanted to ask. He had once. And it ended up a bloody mess. So he won't. Akyl's eyes flickered to Stephen. " What's the planning for today? " Stephen raised his glasses and opened the white iPad. "Ah! An auction is planned at 9 in the afternoon and yes, you have to make an act of presence. " He said, cutting his hopes. " You don't have anything else planned for the day, weirdly enough. " Akyl slammed his hands on the table and stretched his neck. " I want to meet with Alpha Mezdoxa of Blue Night's pack and his beta." He stopped on his track. " Ask if their Luna can be there too. The sooner the better. " A warm smile spread her lips as she got further down on her knees, bowing as low as she could. "Pleased to be of service. " Stephen was flabergasted. Her steps were feather-like, silent as the night sky. The door was still locked and the window hadn't been opened—a genius between geniuses. There was a dangerous aroma in the air of hurt and pain. Stephen trailed the scent to encounter blood. It was sprinkled in discontinued stains on her hands and on the floor. Stephen favored sweet-scented blood, girls. Messe's style of fighting surely had to do with her unknown background. She was very volatile and seemed to be dancing instead of fighting, as gracious as a ballerina, giving off the pretense of being weak and naive. Kyal wasn’t fooled. He knew that the control she had came from excessive training and that there was strength concealed behind. Raïna watched the match unfold as Messe voraciously attacked and Kyal barely blocked her consecutive punches and kicks coming from various directions. Soon, Kyal was on the floor and Messe was helping him stand up. They both came to her and slightly bent down, acknowledging her position. She waved them out to the next training ground which had been made into another examination place. She had been assigned to te

"Can you stand?" she asked Milene even if the answer was obvious. " I will. " Raïna was surprised she said so, but didn't object. She helped her stand up and guided her through the maze of corpses and crying wolves. None of the villagers looked at their Luna or came to ask about her state. They merely looked the other way and Raïna saw a hatred that burned deep down. Milene also wasn't crying as she was abandoning the pack, what was supposed to be the most terrible and atrocious event that could happen to a wolf. Wasn't this her home? But as they made it into the glade and then into the forest, Milene looked behind and closed her eyes. When she opened them, she noticed Raïna staring a lifted the corners of her lips. "I'm well. She had changed into something more comfortable, pajamas, and was watching the view from her mirror. Soon, Milene headed out of the bathroom, her body wrapped into a white towel. The days flew by, and a routine installed itself in their daily life. In the morning, she would cook breakfast and he made sure to always be there while she cooked. He wished he could help her, and had tried once, which resulted in a catastrophe, a mess they spent an hour cleaning afterward. Every single day, he inquired what breakfast would be, delighted by whatever it could be. For a reason that he could not grasp, she never made plain old cereals, the fastest, cheapest breakfast there was. Not that he complained. She would cook lunch, a simple sandwich or a soup or a salad, and would simply give it to him before smiling at him warmly and exiting. After that, they would dress and leave to go through the day. He soon realized that her help grandly benefitted him. She mostly provided support to Stephen and helped ensure the good functioning of the pack. It took a lot of workload off Stephen's shoulders which enabled him to fasten the paperwork and improved their efficiency. He

"Well, that is what's called being frivolous. " Quevelerin commented as the doors to Ballroom 243 opened. Alpha Milan's room didn't resemble the others in the least. When the others were glamourous and polished, detailed, having been under the gaze of professionals to coordinate an assemblage of colors that would flourish the room, this one was particularly simple. Various colors were not coordinated. It felt as if a painter had splashed his paint bucket on the floor and walls, on the decorations and the furniture. Raïna turned her head slowly, she felt like in a museum or an exposition, admiring abstract art. "He's indeed a bit weird, Vinn Milan. " She meant it in a good way. Her eyes searched for the life of the party but once she saw the crowd, she didn't see the tall, powerful, all-muscles macho wearing a hoodie and skinny jeans she was expecting. Stephen carefully walked into Akyl's office, taking precautions to not step on the papers on the floor. Akyl was sleeping in the canopy bed fully clothed. It wasn't a rare occurrence to see him sleeping in the late afternoon. He was in black attire: a black velvet Italian suit and a double-breasted blazer. His uncombed hair spread on his face, the curls had grown too fast, and his white leather gloves were laying next to him. Stephen contemplated the idea of waking him up so they could go and fetch his date. But as he looked at his sleeping boss/best friend, another idea crossed his mind: he could lie down with him.
