I smack my lips. “My boss? Not in a million years. It was an Uber.”

He smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. Come to think of it, his eyes are unusually dull today and he doesn’t look overly energetic like he used to.

“An Uber?” he asks again.

I nod. Reginald gives me a long hard look but he doesn’t persist. That’s unusual. If he isn’t asking more questions, then there’s gotta be something to it. He has always been this human lie detector since we were kids. It makes me more nervous as we both walk back to the Arconia. Did he believe what I just told him?

I swallow hard and tell myself I shouldn’t care whether he believes or not. It makes absolutely no difference.

When we finally get to our floor, he turns to me. “You can come on in if you want. Marienne is at mine’s.”

“Why’s she in your apartment?”

“She wants to make me some soup. I think I might be going down with a little fever.” she says slowly, holding my gaze.
