Iris POV.
Long ago,
The earth was vast and enriched with the finest of things and mostly dominated by three tribes. The werewolves who were the strongest and also known as shape shifters. The Vampires who are the fastest and also referred to as the night crawler or blood suckers because of their need to feed on it to survive and lastly, the third tribe who are the humans who are seen as the gods abomination because of their lack of strength or anything supernatural like their two counterparts.
The two stronger tribes lived in the upper part of the earth while the humans lived in Iko, the only human village.
Somewhere in the village lived two elderly couples, Edmund Monet and his wife Grace Monet. One night while they were eating their last supper, they were stunned when a female vampire came knocking at their door. Her hair was wild and untamed and her eyes were like the deep blue sea.
She was heavily pregnant and hurt. The meat of her neck tore into with blood gushing out of it. Edmund Monet and his wife gave her the best care they could offer and that same night helped her deliver a child.
However, the female vampire had lost too much blood and couldn’t be saved. She and her child shared only a moment before she passed on to another life. Edmund Monet and his wife was face with the biggest decision of their lives that night. To harbor a vampire child or give her up.
After many years of trying to have a child of their own and couldn’t, my birth that night was like a blessing from the gods they had been praying for even though it was an unlikely one and had to be protected at all cost.
This is the story my parent told me and even made me promise not to tell it to anyone or I will be lost to them forever.
I sighed deeply, pushing the thought towards the back of my mind. It was still early in the morning and all I have to do is get out of bed before my mother come get me herself. I need to get ready and have breakfast before it all begins.
After the werewolves took out the vampires, The King Alpha has made a new rule declaring himself ruler of the two remaining tribes and each two years, humans are required to give out slaves to them and today also happens to be the selection ceremony and it’s even worst to think that Prince Otis was overseeing the whole darn selection process himself.
In order to survive, humans are left with no choice but to give their young ones who are at the slavery age of eighteen to serve in their kingdom either as their human breeders for the female and laborers for the male.
It even crazier to think that my family are the ones in charge of gathering everyone due for the selection and the one for this year is about to begin.
The fact that Prince Otis was coming to do it himself has caused great panic among the people. The prince is said to be ruthless. A man with no heart, a beast walking in human form whose eyes can literally melt a human skin. I have heard horrible tales about that man which further confirm everyone’s dread to his coming. No one knows what to expect from someone of that status and can only hope to please him in every way necessary.
Pulling off the hair band in my wrist, I proceed to tying my hair into a loose ponytail with it before springing back on my feet and towards the bathroom. Glancing at my reflection in the mirror, I almost cringe at the face staring back at me. I look unrecognizable no doubt and this was as a result of last night mischievousness.
While everyone was asleep, i was out in the garden playing like a child even though i'm already twenty one years of age.
I took off the blue crystal necklace around my neck and had it placed against the stand before settling into the water tub after heating it up.
Fifteen minutes later, I was back in my room and brushing off the tangles in my hair while humming to whatever tone that came to mind. It looks like a good day to run around the garden but I doubt my parent would let that happen. I mean not while the evil Prince is likely to show up at anytime.
The fact that my window was facing the garden isn’t helping my desire to run in it right now. A little sigh slipped out my mouth as I continued to stare longingly out the window and into the sea of flowers. My eyes caught the red ones, bringing a sad smile to my lip, recalling how that particular roses have led me to meet a special someone who became very dear to me even though he has long being taken away from me.
Logan was his name and he was picked during the selection ceremony two years ago. Even though I saw it coming. I still spent the whole of that month crying my eyes out recalling the face I might never see again while trying to hold on to every single memory we ever had between usLife has been hard without my best friend but i have learnt to let go and move on when I have to. It was the only way to survive in the world we live in even though we are constantly being reduced in numbers by those savages who think themselves to be gods among us.
I truly wished there was something I could do to change the slavery situation of my people but like my father used to say, it was better to try and stay alive than fight a war we are doomed to loose. My heart still breaks each time the people I grew up to meet are being forced to leave their love ones behind never to be united ever again not to mentioned getting killed for those who tried to resist or run back to their family.
Even the weak ones were slaughtered for showing some signs of weakness which was unacceptable to them. A cold shiver snaked down my spine at the memory of that incident and once again forcing me to understand why my parents would go to any length just to keep me safe. They obviously doesn’t want the same fate to befall me but still the thought that they'd let other people children be taken away weighed heavy on my conscience time and time again.
‘’Iris.’’ I heard my mother’s voice, pulling me out of my train of thought and back to reality.
I quickly wiped my teary eyes, knowing it wouldn’t do any good if my mother saw the state i was in. The last thing i want is to cause her to be sad as well.
‘’In here, mother.’’ I called back with the same enthusiasm.
The door to my room opened to reveal my mother. A tall slim beauty with golden hair walked in and stood before me with a kind smile plastered on her face as she stared back at me.
Moving ever so gracefully, she came and stood beside me by the chair before she peered down at my face.
‘’You’ve been awake?’’ she questioned.
I answered with a small nod, “I had to get up and get ready” i said with a small smile that barely made it to my eyes.
My mother reached over and took hold of my hands and gave it a little squeeze with a smile of her own.
“You did well because breakfast is ready and about to be served’’ she said and I sighed.
‘’I’m not that hungry, mother.’’
The last thing on my mind at the moment is food. The thought of what is about to happen is making me have all these weird thoughts and feeling in my head. My mother arched a careful brow at me and I know exactly what is to come next.
‘’But why child? You have to eat something and be healthy’’ my mother chided with a frown.
‘’I just don’t feel like eating, mother” I let the words slip out of my mouth with a pout hoping it would be enough to get her off my back this once.
“I won’t allow you to skip breakfast my dear. You are becoming all bone and no flesh” She cried out and I was forced to bite down my next protest.
“okay fine. I will eat but first, I need to ask you something?’’ I said.
‘’Sure darling, what’s wrong?’’ she asked, her eyes narrowing back at me with concern.
I bite down at my lower lips in hesitation knowing the topic I’m about to venture into is but a sensitive topic. Counting from one to ten in my head, i let the words tumble out of my mouth, ‘’Why do the Alpha king and his people keep coming back to take more slaves from our village? Why can’t they just stop already?’’
I saw pain flashed through my mother’s eyes just as quickly before it was carefully replaced with her usual cheerful smile.
‘’There is no stopping them my child not when They see us humans as the gods' abomination because of our lack of strength to stand against them. We are what we have became, preys as they are the predators.’’ she said, her word sounding so light yet it weight hung heavy in the air like fog before my voice broke through it once again.
‘’Isn’t there someone who can stop them? I mean, there should be someone out there who can stop them right? We can’t keep living like this, like farm animals waiting to be slaughtered by its owners.’’ I said, the words spilling out of my mouth in sheer desperation and pain.
She shook her head slightly, ‘’I’m afraid there's nothing we can do. They are far too strong and dangerous for us. We humans have learnt to live with it for several years now. All we have to do is do everything they ask us to do including giving them slaves yearly as peace offering without questioning.’’
Even though my mother was trying to hide the pain and fright in her words, I could still see through it all as they also bring dread to my own spine. Was there really no way out of this misery till no one is left? Is that really it? Maybe it was it. Even though everyone has refused to see it, I was certain The Alpha king aren’t just taking humans from our village because they want them as slaves but simply doing it as a means to reduce the human population so we don’t grow to stand against them in our numbers. I mean, How else would they demand for only the strong while disposing the weak.
It's obvious they don’t want humans yet take them as precautions either way.
Relaying my thoughts to my mother in the same manner was one thing but getting her to see it the way I see it is another as she simply smiled at me before her hands came to cup both my cheeks with a look of pain in her eyes.
‘’I don’t think so dear but a legend has it that a human child will be mated to a royal bloodline before the next moon eclipse in order to bring balance to the world again.’’ she said, “and if that’s true then you my child might live to see a day where all will be free and equal even to the acclaimed gods”
‘’Really? Mother? You think a day like that would come?’’ I asked with a wide grin that was fast spreading across my face and she nodded at me.
‘’Yes dear but first, you must eat to stay alive and witness such great day” She said finally with a chuckle before she start to pulled me back on my feet and towards the open door leading to the lower floor where the dinning area is located.
**
‘’Good morning Father.’’ I smiled as i kissed my father lightly on the cheek before pulling out a chair and sit on it.
‘’Good morning child, good to see you smiling” my father said looking away from his plate of food and back at me with a smile of his own.
Even though I am what I am, I have never tasted blood, my parent made sure of it early enough when they had a witch forge a necklace for me to prevent my taste and early transformation as well. The necklace is so powerful that I can walk under the sun just like everyone else and eat whatever the humans eat without reacting to it.
Once I had my plate filled with food, we held hands and said some prayers to the gods before getting ready to dig into our food. A plate of mashed potato and fruits with a glass of warm milk. One of my favorite I must say. Just about then, a sharp knock was heard on the front door startling us as all three of our heads turned to stare back at the closed door. My heart starting to thump in my chest a bit loudly.
Being the village head, my father was used to receiving visitors on a regular basis and at odd times. But still, everyone was feeling uneasy especially with the coming selection and knowing the prince would be arriving anytime soon. It could be him or anyone from the palace.
‘’I’ll get it.’’ I offered and made to get the door but my father’s angry voice halted me in my next hasty steps.
‘’No, don’t do it. I’ll get it while you go to your room and stay there. Don’t come out unless i ask you to, understood? ,’’ my father instructed as always and I answered with a nod before hurrying up the stairs and towards the direction of my room.
Once my father was certain i was back in my room, he wiped his mouth clean before rising up to his feet. He hastily composed himself before he walked towards the main door. Upon opening it, he stood still with a neutral look, staring at the man at the other end of the door.
Peeping from the staircase, I couldn’t see his face but he was dressed in full regalia which indicated he was one of the rider in the company of the prince, meaning Prince Otis himself wasn’t far off either.
My father stood his ground as he face the prince messenger as always.
‘’Edmund Monet, what took you so long?.’’ he asked in a booming voice and I watched my father gulped down nervously before replying.
“I’m sorry but my wife and I were just breaking our fast”
“Prince Otis would be arriving soon and he wants everyone to be assembled before he get here or there will be consequences” He barked and my father bow respectfully.
“Everything will be done swiftly and effectively. You have my word”
The rider spat suddenly as he took a step closer, towering over my dear father who already looked scared out of his wit, “Your words means nothing human, just fucking do your job”
“yes, yes, I will”
That was my cue to ran back to my room and I did and shut the door before letting out a breath.
Even though I was within the safety of my room, I still couldn’t help but panic all the same as I began to pace up and down, not knowing what could be going on out there.
I was still pacing the length and breadth of my room when I heard a quiet knock against the door and startling me as well.
“open the door Iris, it’s me your mother” I heard my mother’s voice and let out a breath i didn’t realize I was holding in before stepping towards the door and unlocked it. Her arms quickly reached out as soon as she stepped in and pulled me into a quick embrace before pulling away slightly to look back at my face. Fright evident in her searching eyes.
“What is it mother, you look scared”
“I know child” She answered simply before cocking her head to the side to glance at my neck. I heard her gasped with wide eyes when she found my neck to be rather empty. “where is your necklace?”
My hands immediately went up to my neck to feel my necklace around there too before a little sigh slipped out of my own mouth in realization. “I must have left it in the bathroom, it’s not a big deal mother” I said and moved to retrieved it from the single room that was connected to my bedroom. And just like I had imagined, i found it lying against the bath tub and took hold of it before reaching to place it around my neck once again. My mother worried expression relaxed a bit before she came and stood before me, her hands going to grab both my hands. “Iris my child, Remember what your father and I told you the day we had that necklace made for you?” “You said never to take it off?” “Yes and I can see that you have deliberately taken it off today” “I’m sorry moth_” i began but my mother voice simply caught me off. “ _Iris, I need you to swear to me that you will never ever take that necklace off your neck ever again. Now promise me” My lip parted slightly but no word made it out.
I swallowed hard not sure what to say to reply the Prince. I was beyond petrified at this point, preferring to look at the white walls behind his head than at his face that was contoured with naked rage. I’m doomed, that much i knew. There was no way the prince was going to let me go whether am able to offer up a suggestion or not. He had already taken an interest in me, that much I can also tell from the way he was staring at me. It was only a matter of time before i knew my fate. He grabbed me roughly by the chin, forcing my face to stare back at him. A deep frown cresting his rather handsome face still. "We don’t have all night, human, speak up and stop wasting both our time." He growled with irritation. My eyes narrowed to stare at his grey ones before it darted away once again, totally not sure of what to say. My teeth came down hard and met with my lower lip. I almost tasted blood at the impact. It was my only way of not snapping at him. It might get me and my parent killed i
“I’m sorry about your parent but you have to stop crying now” one of the girls in the cell said quietly and I was forced to sniff back more tears before turning to face her completely. She has red ginger hair and beautiful green orbs for eyes as she continued to stare at me.“I’m sorry too but didn’t you lose your family as well? Why are you not sad even“ I asked with confusion and the girl shook her head slightly at me. “Your parent and mine are not the same. Mine gave me up willingly and yours tried to save you at least”I was quiet for a moment, not sure of what to say to reply her. My mind now occupied with the type of parent the girl might have had as compared to mine.“I’m not upset with what they did though. They always made me realized that a day like this would come so I had no choice but to prepare myself for it”I couldn’t help but admire the new girl's bravery. I wished i was that strong from the beginning because the best way to overcome fear is to face it and she was ind
I was left sitting by the corner in the room for another minute or two before i heard a knock against the door startling me slightly. Another knock was heard once again before the door was pushed open when i made no move on my part to get it. I inhaled sharply thinking it was the Prince but was relieved when i realized I was staring at a younger girl and even more, she doesn’t look like one of the lycan. The young girl was average and structured like a normal human girl. She had a tray of food in hand as she came forward and placed it before me. “His Highness, the Prince asked that you be fed and if it’s not enough, I can bring more” I looked away from her face and back at the plate of food placed before me in shock, even more surprised to be staring at mashed potato and some fruits, which is exactly what i had like two days ago. Fresh tears stink my eyes as the thought of my parent crossed my mind once again but I quickly sniffed them away. “thank you” I told the girl, not sure how
Otis POV. It’s being three days since I returned from the human village and I’m yet to see my father. Right now, I’m feeling a bit anxious as I continued to walk down the long corridor leading to the throne room, right where I knew he would be. The throne room happens to be my least favorite part of the palace. I have nothing but only memories of my father reprimanding or barking his damn orders at me to be carried out. I can still remember a particular event where he made me whipped a human maid for spilling wine at him even though it was a silly mistake. The damage I was forced to cause to her bare back that day still hunted me and because I couldn’t get more than a few lashes as compared to what he ordered, my father think me to be a weakling hence his need for sending me to the human village to prove myself. I can already imagine his reaction when I tell him that which he thought he had completely wiped out is still existing and even more living under his roof now. I wonder wha
Iris POV. It's been three days now since I was taken from my village, from my home and away from my parent and brought here. To say I'm sad and dejected would be an understatement because I’m completely broken to my core. Time and time again, the prince had tried to test me with his blood without any success. Like this morning, when my breakfast was brought, I realized the food served was the exact opposite of what I have been eating. Roasted steak and fried potato with garlic sauce. I can tell he is pretty determine to prove that I am what he believe me to be and each time I don’t bend to his will, I see him coming up with new ideas like the change in menu this morning. He seem very tense when he left this morning all dressed in his princely attire while I acted like a ghost all together. The garlic sauce had a weird taste at first but after a few more try, I realized how delicious it was. The steak had a whole different taste in itself and I found myself chewing it down just fine
“Be my girlfriend”“What? What…what do you mean I have to be your girlfriend” I panic out loud, my eyes almost popping out of its sockets while I stare back at Otis whose demeanor was just as calm as though he didn’t just say those words to me.He gave a careless shrug and moved to seat against the bed before relaxing against it. His arms resting under his head as he gaze up the ceiling.“Let me break it down for you Iris. You want to go home and I need someone to act like my girlfriend so we have to help each other to get what we both want”I arched a brow at him as if he could see me. “How is my acting as your girlfriend going to get me home?”“Believe me it does” He said with a quick glance at my direction.I was quiet for a moment still trying to wrap my mind around what he just said. It’s true I want to go home but why does he need me to act like one when he can just get himself one for real.“But why do you need a girlfriend to get the king off your back?”He sat back up, his ey
“it's too tight” I said breathlessly, while attempting to catch my breath.“It can never be too tight, miss. Just suck in your stomach a little more” The lady dressing me up said and yanked on the lace of my bodice once again as if they could get any tighter than they already are.The dress was so tight that I was starting to feel light headed from lack of oxygen and to think it being only a minute i'd been wearing this cursed thing.Back in my village, I never went dancing at the village hall like most girl my age because my parent never allowed it, so I never had the need to wear something as restricting and totally life threatening as these. It was truly terrible. Left to me I would rather wear something else but the prince wanted me to look presentable and this is their idea of such. Sucking the life out of me without cares or worries. She finished brushing out my hair and had it pinned to the back, with it tip cascading down my back beautifully. The lady took a step back to admir
Epilogue I pulled up my hair in a neat bun and glanced at my reflection one last time before I began to hurry around determinedly in search of son Nelson. I needed to get ready so I tricked him into hiding so I could search for him and so far, he is still in hiding and now I have to pretend to search him out even though I already know where he was. I waited a moment, listening for his breathing from around the room. “Found you!” I cried out laughing when as I revealed his small form hiding under the table, the skirt doing a really poor job in hiding him completely. Instead of trying to run, I pulled the child into my grasps in an affectionate hug and began to tickle him, causing him to laugh and giggle. “Let play again” Nelson requested sweetly, lifting his chin up to look at me pleadingly, his eyes, one grey and one crimson. His vampire side was far more suppressed so that he didn’t hold fangs and can walk under the sun without a protective ring like I did. Nelson was thankfull
Since my family arrived, I had spent most of my time with them, trying to catch up with things that had happened at home after I was taken. Turns out most of this villagers felt betrayed by what my parent did while most still sympathized with them, after all, they also know what it feels like to loose their children to become slaves. While we talked about all that had happened behind me, we also talked about my life here in the palace and all that had transpired this past few months before their arrival. The welcoming ball was scheduled for two days after my family’s arrival, mostly to give them time to rest and adjust to the new environment and surprisingly, my parent adapted rather quickly. The next night was a bit of stress as u was being fitted for my dress. A gold dress with jewel of diamonds that Otis had gifted to me specially for the occasion.Once I was ready, I thanked my maids and then stepped out into the hallway. Henry was there, standing before my room diligently. I fl
It has been a week since Prince Otis became the king. He has been so busy with palace affairs that I barely ever saw him. So, after eating breakfast alone that morning, I decided to go see him in his study and just as I had imagined, he has a desk filled with paper work.At my presence, he seem to pause for a moment as he beckon on me to go to him. I hurried to where he sat behind his desk and he pulled me into his arms, a relief sigh escaping my mouth quietly. When we pulled a little bit apart, he reached out a hand to my still flat stomach and rub gently on it.“How are you and the baby?”I smiled, “We are doing good”“I’m sorry I couldn’t join you for breakfast”He said and I nodded before I lean in and brush his lips with mine before leaning away.I shrugged before replying, “I know you have work, your Majesty” I said teasingly and he chuckled before pulling me completely to sit on his laps.“Your family is coming” he stated simply and I hesitated, wondering if he was honest.“My
I couldn’t even sleep as planned, My mind was replaying everything that had happened. I kept wondering what my mother looked like at least I know her name was Katherine maybe prince can tell me a little bit about them.I made my way into the bathroom and filled the bathtub before shrugging out of my cloth and slipped inside. I spent my time washing up in the bath before returning to the bedroom to change into something else and into bed once again.I couldn’t lie still as I rolled over on the bed instead of trying to go outside and meet the sun as it was still high up in the sky. More hours passed by before I heard the door crack open and Prince walked in. I sat up sharply, my heart hanging in my throat. When the prince hesitated by the door, I quickly got out of bed and began to approach him carefully. I took a step closer and stood before him as I looked into his eyes. They held something familiar. Something I had seen before but before I could speak, he beat me to it and spoke up f
“Unbind and bring her out, it’s time to go” The King ordered and one of the guard unlock the shackles around my feet binding me to the chair as well as my hands and I let out a relief sigh before I was pulled back on my feet.Still feeling weak, I crumbled to the floor before I felt two strong pair of hands grip my arms on either side and lifted me back on my feet to follow king Roman out the door. With two guards holding me on both side with enough force to cause bruises, I wondered how strong did they think a vampire actually was. On my way down the halls, I spotted a few people I recognized. Agnes was among them as they a good staring in horror as they saw us pass by.My heart raced in my chest as I looked for the Prince but something in my heart felt that he was far away from me as I was on my own. I felt afraid when I thought of the Prince, my chest feeling tight and breathless.I was escorted out of the building and into the carriage wapiti outside with the king following from b
King Roman took a step closer and then reached out a hand to grasp my chin but I pushed away before he could but that didn’t stop him as she grabbed my face roughly before turning me enough to get a better look at my neck.“You have healed just fine. Not bad at all” he said before his hands dropped from my face and I let out a groan.“So are you going to tell him what my kind ever did to you or not? Since you had every single one of them killed then it must be pretty bad I suppose?”“Hmm” he said simply before turning away.“You have always been curious so I’m going to tell you a story" king Roman said.“During my young days, I became friends with a vampire king, we would do things together, go places together and even fight our bullies together. We were so inseparable that my parents and his tried everything they could to break us but it didn't work”“We grew up to the age of marriage and got married to our respective spouses and even had children. Then that was when he showed his tr
Iris POVMy eyes widen as they start to advanced further with their blades towards us and I dropped to my knees in response before they'd reach me.Just as I did, Prince quickly transformed into a large beast diving over me and attacking the guards coming towards me. I looked back up to see bloodshed around me, guards screamed at a single bite and prince was large enough to tower over them as he stood protectively over me.Heads and limbs were torn off from their bodies and their blows were bouncing off the Prince fur as he paws slide between them, none of them his match.I wanted to stand up, to run away but I couldn’t move and if I could, I wouldn’t be able to leave Prince behind. Suddenly, a much powerful roar in the room was heard and I dove to the ground wincing as I heard the new beast collided into Prince wolf and then I heard a high pitched cry as Prince was hit with the attack painfully.“Prince” I cried out, lifting my self at last from the ground and towards Prince collapse
(Otis POV)There an intense heaviness in my chest as I stood beside Lady Avril at the center of the arena surrounded by guests and of course, my father the king who was sitting at his spot, his cold eyes not so cold at the moment but glistering with what I could only term as joy.I bet this moment has been in his imagination longer than anything he has ever thought of. Everyone else has a look of fulfilled expectations on their faces. Not once did I imagined that my life would turn out like this. I don't want to marry the woman standing beside me but I had no choice. I wanted to stop the wedding but couldn't. I can’t even look at the face of the woman is who is about to be mated to me. I know she was happy and full of smiles and didn't even care about my expression nor feelings. She just wanted to be called my wife and be the next Queen Luna. My eyes searched around the hall, hoping to see Iris but she was nowhere in sight. When I got out of bed this morning, she was still asleep.
Iris POV. With slouched posture and head lowered, she continued to stared at the floor quietly. Her hands fidgeting with the hem of her dress even more. From the frantic beating of her heart, I could tell she was nervous about something. “Agnes? Do you really know where I can get my bracelet back? If you do please let me know. I really need to get it back” I asked again before lifting her chin up to stare into her eyes and in them I saw guilt, so much guilt and regret as tears had start to pool in them before spilling across her cheeks. "I'm so sorry, Iris. Please forgive me” She cried, holding on to my hands but I couldn’t say a word as I was pretty much taken back by her unexpected reaction and she continued. “I didn’t mean to take it” she said quietly, her voice barely a whisper. I didn’t even know how to react. I knew she was the only one that had access to the room but I didn’t imagine she had taken it. What could have been her reason? “Why did you take it? Did you know who
