PUNIT’S POV
Okay, got what I need, and now I’m headed home!
We’re planning to cook some khichdi tonight. And she’s a great cook, have I told you? Give her any ingredient, she’ll make something great out of it, and one look is all that she takes to get ideas.
So, where were we? Ah, yes! That day, she headed to the principal’s office to complain. Well, it didn’t work. Ask me why I’m not surprised. That guy was a chicken and didn’t have the spine to lift a finger against the chairman’s son. Well, I can't blame him. He has to save his ass. He and he alone must, because, no one else will save it for him.
So, one afternoon, as I was taking a cautious stroll in the school grounds, (cautious because, you know... this bully Sibal would be lurking in the corner waiting to bash me up) I chanced upon a ruckus. There was a hell lot of noise and all the kids had gathered around to see what was happening. And now, I was curious too.
“What’s going on?” I asked and stood on my toes, craning my neck to peer beyond the sea of heads.
Being tall and lanky had its plus points, I could reach anywhere. Well, not everywhere. And I could take the backbench or be the last in a row. It was a blessing considering that Sibal was a shorty and had to stay in the front of wherever he went, be it a bench or a row.
He was chunky, like a piece of meat, had man boobs, and was shorter by a couple of inches. But that didn’t make his punches any softer. God, I hate him. Guess I said that already?
So, when I peered over, guess what I saw? I’ll give you a hint, whatever I saw out there made me utterly happy.
Sibal was getting mauled!
By Anki!
Can you believe that?
I have to admit, I was happy. I could break a marathon hurdle record. I was THAT happy! He deserved it! Sucker used to taunt me a LOT for no reason at all! I’d always dreamt of watching him getting butt-caned in full view of the school or at least get into the most humiliating moment of his life, but alas, it never happened, until now. My joy knew no bounds!
I wondered why he was getting bashed up though!
“Kick his ass!!!” someone cheered beside me. I won't lie, that startled me so bad that I almost jumped out of my shorts.
But wow! Looks like I wasn’t the only one who loathed this guy? There were many others. Why else would they cheer on this? Some were even hooting for God’s sake.
It was deafening. It felt like I was in the Roman Colosseum watching a fight to the death between gladiators. NOT. More like a bullfight, rather. And this little matador was getting gored to death by Anki. She was literally kicking him around like a plastic cup. I had no idea what got her so possessed.
At one point in time, he was exhausted, so much that he trembled when he tried clambering to his knees. But one kick to his side made him bite the dust yet again.
There was a hell lot of oohs which stopped when out of nowhere the teachers charged with their canes. All of us scattered like bullets. Thanks to Sibal, I was great at sprinting, so it didn’t take me long to cover up the whole ground in one stride.
When I’d found a safe hiding spot behind a tree, I saw Anki being dragged away to the Principal’s office. I was scared. I really hoped that they didn’t hurt her. I was damn sure that she’d done nothing wrong.
So, I inched closer and hung around.
Mr. Shah, our chicken poop principal was about to hit her with a cane. But man, talk about defiance and guts, she just crossed her arms and refused to give in. And that’s when he grabbed her by the skirt and tried to whack her ass.
“Don’t touch me!” She snarled like an angry cat and knocked his cane away. “I’ve done nothing wrong! If you dare, go and pick on that mutt, Sibal. If you have issues with me, talk to my parents about it!”
I just blinked. Like seriously, what creature was she?
Even the teachers were taken aback. Some of them looked embarrassed.
"How dare you!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!” Mr. Shah was trembling in fury. The guy was so huge and flabby that he looked like a giant hippo.
I wanted to hang around and know more, but unfortunately, I had to get back to class.
A while later, I saw her dad for the first time. She was with him too. They were having a chat as they walked past our class. I really wanted to know what happened.
I remember fidgeting in my seat to get a better look at him. After all, he was Anki’s father and I wanted to know everything about her.
Ratan Agarwal. That’s his name. He had salt and pepper hair, glasses, and sharp, piercing eyes. On the first impression, he looked like a very hot-tempered, no-nonsense guy. Maybe that was where Anki got her fury from?
That was the first time I felt a strong pull towards her. I don’t know what it was. Admiration? Curiosity? Or attraction? I felt like a helpless fanboy. I wanted to get close to her. Grab her attention. Be her friend. Be everything!!!
I ended up thinking about her several times in the day.
My eyes were quick to spot her almost anywhere, even from amidst a crowd.
My ears were eternally up to listen to what she had to say, or what others had to say about her.
I found myself defending her when anyone spoke shit about her. Not that anyone did, she was so rightful in all her ways.
I followed her. Secretly. Um... is that stalking by the way? I refuse to believe that. I wasn’t stalking her. Um... was I?
***
Note: Going forward, the story will be in Punit’s POV until specified. I don’t know why the heck I was following her, I mean, like what exactly did I want to find out? Beats me. Maybe it was the way she walked around with that guitar strapped over her back. It made her look so special as if she wasn’t already. I learned that she took music lessons when the rest of the school pigged out on their lunch. How fab is that? But I’ll admit it, I was shit scared. From the way I was going on, I was damn sure, someday, I was going to get caught tailing her, by someone or the other. And if it was going to be her who caught me red-handed, well, God save me. I’d seen the way she’d mauled Sibal. She was strong and didn’t give a damn about anything or anyone. Yet, something told me that she’d have spared me. She would, right? Um...So, one day, it happened. She c
It was the annual school fest and I had big plans. Really big plans!I’ll be honest, I was shit scared. For one, people were for sure going to laugh me out the gates. Two, Sibal would laugh me out to space. The very thought of it made me shudder. But it was now or never. It was hard finding the stuff I required for this feat, but I did, and I just had one more thing to do.“So, what will it be?” asked a senior girl sitting at the desk. She was entering the names for the fest in the notebook before her.“Fancy dress,” I stated and moved out after making sure that she got it right. I literally strutted down the corridors, as if I’d just enlisted myself in the army. Well, it was as good as that.Yup, fancy dress. That’s what I had signed up for. I had a never before unique idea up my sleeve, but I was scared. As I strolled down the third-flo
D-day was here and Punit’s knees wouldn’t stop buckling. Oh, how he wished that Anki was there. A few more minutes was all that he had to face his greatest fear: the stage. All morning, they’d practiced that song together, the one they were planning to perform, and he wasn’t at his best. In fact, he was at his worst. He went off-tune and off-beat consistently, irritating the devil out of her.“What the hell are you doing!!!” she blasted.“S-sorry,” he mumbled.“What ‘sorry’? You were so good yesterday. So, what happened now?” she questioned angrily.Punit pondered over for a while before speaking. “I don’t think I can do this,” he told her queasily. At that, she gnashed her teeth. “I swear, I’ll smash this guitar over your head! Don’t you dare fuck up a
Post her solo performance, Ankita hurried down the corridors in search of Punit. She was kind of worried and hoped that he was okay. Two, their duet was up right after the fancy dress competition. She wondered if he was in the state to do it. She hoped he was. But knowing him, she highly doubted that. She was about to whip past the empty classroom around the corner on the top-most floor and take the flight of stairs to the grounds when she saw him huddled inside.“Punit?” She walked in through the door.He looked up from the terrible state that he was in. He was a mess. The kohl around his eyes was smudged from crying, his face was pale and sweaty and his hair was all roughed up. Sniffling, he ran a finger under his nose and looked away.“What?” She shrugged, completely shocked at his state.“I suck,” he blurted in a clogged voice.&ldqu
Oh, how she wished that looks could kill! Because, by now, Punit should have been glared to death by Ankita. They were on stage performing their duet, and Punit was clearly messing it up. He was offbeat, off-tune, and everything else that could possibly ruin a good song. What the hell is he doing!!!!?She thought desperately. She badly wanted to shut him up. But he kept going faster and faster that the audience was in splits. He finished up much before the song was actually supposed to end and bolted out of there. For the sake of it, some of them applauded, but most of them were hooting and howling.Ankita felt humiliated. Never before had she faced something like this! People had only admired her after every performance, but this...! She swore to God that when she caught up with him, she would pound his head into the wall.***Much later, when Punit had fina
Punit scrunched up his face and stayed under the table, hoping that they would spare him. He didn’t have the guts to face her, not after promising a stellar performance and giving muck in return.“Punit, drop it, man, she’s gone,” came Vaidehi’s voice after a while. He pulled out, his face red and sweaty from bending over for so long. “She’s gone?”“Yup!”He sighed, feeling so flustered. “See! What did I tell you!!? She’s still mad at me! Or else she would have talked to me. But she didn’t! See!!!”“Why do you want her to make the first move? Even you can talk to her, right?”“And get myself killed? No way!”“She won’t do anything,” replied Vaidehi.“Right!” His words were dripping
“I seriously thought you’d blast at him,” Vaidehi admitted on their way back to class. Ankita chuckled and strolled along. “Are you seriously letting him sing again?” she asked curiously. “Hmm? Well, yeah,” Ankita shrugged. “Why though? Won’t he mess it up?” “He might. But let’s see. He’s got a great voice. And I want that. I want that for my songs. It’s the kind of voice I’d always wanted.” Ankita looked dreamy. “He’d sound fab especially for the latest one you wrote,” said Vaidehi excitedly. Ankita always told her about the songs she used to write and compose. It was her dream to be a filmmaker one day and she made sure that knew the ins and outs of the art, from story to screen to music, everything. “True! I can’t wait to hear that in his voice! Now, if he’d only stop freaking out!” “What’s your pla
“Do you guys have something going on?” asked Vaidehi one day, out of the blue.“What?”“Do you guys have something going on?” She repeated before adding, “Punit and you?”“What do you mean?” Ankita was surprised.“Well, people are talking.” She shrugged.“About what?”“About you guys... that you are together most of the time and pretty much have... you know... something going on.” As much as she was open and friendly with Ankita, she was cautious enough to not cross the line. As of now, she wasn’t sure how she’d take being romantically paired up with a guy and stuff.“In the sense? That we guys are dating and stuff?” Ankita made a sour face.“Well, yeah, kind of.” Vaidehi shrugge
Ankita was jittery as she strolled to the grounds and lined up with the rest of the girls. She glanced at the sea of heads before her. As usual, she was the last in the row, thanks to her height. She was taller than most girls and it seemed that she wouldn’t stop growing. Many a time, she has pondered over how tall she would be by the time she hit twenty. The chatter was deafening, and she wondered what they had so much to talk about! Unlike others, she could barely start or keep up with a conversation.
After a week’s hiatus, Ankita trudged through the gates of her new school. She adjusted the weight of her bag on her shoulder, her cold, sweaty hand wringing its strap as she did. Her head and chest thumped alike as she ran her eyes around the strange surroundings. Though the school was pretty young, it was massive with a ground that could pass for a football stadium.Unfamiliar places and situations always made her feel uncomfortable. The never-ending stretch of grounds with no proper direction didn’t help either. Small, comprehensible pl
That day, there was an uproar in the Principal’s office, so much that the entire school kept mum and listened to the conversation.Mr. Ratan, Raj and the other parents could be heard roasting the Principal.“Who gave you the bloody right to lay hands on my daughter? Did I!!? This is NOT why I’ve sent my girl here. Get that straight!!! If you have any issues with her, call me up. That’s what I’m here for!!!” Mr. Ratan’s angry voice rang from the Principal’s office.“Teach your girl to behave and then maybe no would lay hands on her,” followed Mr. Shah’s response.“Teach your master’s son first. IF you have the spine! IF you have any bit of self-respect!” Mr. Ratan barked back. The victims of Sibal’s bullying episode – Punit, Ankita, Edwin, Bruno and Jyotsana huddled outsid
When Ankita got a grip on herself, she let go of Punit and trudged a bit away from them to be alone for a while. Punit watched her intently as she stood with her back to them. All of this felt unreal. The brutal assault Sibal and his cronies belted out on him, Ankita’s rampage on the bullies and now this... Something rolled over in his guts, infuriating him. His hatred for Mr. Shah had reached an all-new level. How could the man be such a coward, such a puppet as to punish the victims instead of the culprits, and that too, in the most painful and humiliating manner? It was then that he realized why his back hurt as if scalded with boiling water. Mr. Shah had whipped him like a horse. Anyhow, he was glad that she didn’t have to take that. Despite knowing that she was furious and needed time to cool off, he went ahead and joined her. Cautiously, he stole a glance before meeting her angry glare.
The bell sounded and Punit’s heart thumped hard in his chest. It was fight or flight. As far as ‘fight’ was concerned, he was outnumbered. In one quick move, he attempted to bolt through them to safe haven. They smoothly botched his attempt.“Whoa-whoa-whoa! Where do you think you’re going, huh? Huh!!?” Sibal barked at him while the cronies held him in place.“The bell... the bell...” Punit was sweaty and breathless.“The bell. What bell?” Sibal teased him. He was inches away from Punit now.“The bell. N-N-Need to get to class...” Punit struggled to stay calm.“Or else what? Hmm?” Without any warning, Sibal threw an ear-splitting slap and flung him hard against a wall.Punit collapsed to the floor, reeling from the collision.&n
Anki’s next meeting with Punit was, well... awkward. The very sight of him reminded her of all the rubbish that was floating around school which she bet he’d already heard of. She only hoped that she hadn’t done anything that made her look like a desperate lovesick looney to him. What if he really thought that I was so desperately crushing on him, bad enough to convince him to belt out a love song for me? Eww! Cringe factor, 100%!As for Punit, he’d heard it too and he wondered what her take could be. In fact, some of the boys and even the girls had already interrogated him, and he’d smoothly denied any such thing. But, coming to think of it, he already had a crush on her, he only wished that she never got a hint of it because what if she never felt the same? That could end their friendship and he really didn’t want that. Things were going really well as of now.He noticed that Anki too w
