CARMEN

“My husband attempted to kill his mother.”

I stared myself in the mirror of the police division bathroom and shook my head as I said that. That didn’t make sense to say, especially since his intention was not to kill her.

I had asked for the bathroom as soon as I walked in as the pressure of everything had taken a toll on my bladder and I had to let it all out. Besides, I didn’t even know how to start my sentence – one that would grab the attention of the officer that I would be talking to.

“Do you know the missing woman, Mariah Hayes? Well, I am her daughter-in-law and I think I know who is behind her going missing,” I said.

“This isn’t working, Carmen.” I placed my hands on my head.

I figured out that I would have to come up with something right on the spot as that would work better and the pressure would make me think of something to say.

I grabbed my purse and walked out of the bathroom to find the officer that I had been directed to.
