"My wish for you is happiness. Please be happy this time my ..." The weak familiar voice faded away before she could hear the rest of the words.
What were they again?
She opened up her mouth to speak, to ask. But, nothing came out.
Nothing but the sound of a voice, her voice, crying in agony.
Elinor startled her body jolting up and waking her from her sleep. The carriage was bumping as it traversed the slightly rocky path. Looking up, she found her cousin's eyes on her.
"Still having those nightmares," He asked with a tone cool and his perceptive eyes peering at her.
"No, The carriage just jolted me awake..." She answered spewing an empty line that didn't sound believable even to her own ears.
"The road gets a little bit rocky when we get close, we should be there any moment," Ludwig said indulging in her desire to ignore the subject.
"Good, I bet the headmaster had been waiting for us since this morning," she responded and Louis looked out the window. Their conversation was over.
Glad, Elin leaned back on her bumpy seat and looked at the beautiful scenery rolling by them, immediately taking her away from everything.
Happiness...
What a selfish wish to bestow on someone as your last dying request. How was she supposed to be happy after all that... It was already suffocating to live each day as it is...
"Are you sure that you want to come here?" Louis asked interrupting her self-pitying monologue to ask her the same question for the tenth time since she made this decision, "I doubt that the Royal Academy will teach you anything you don't know. You have enough work to do at the royal palace as it is..."
"It was his majesty's wish. I will do it if he thinks that it's what is good for me..." Elinor responded, "Besides, most of my work can be delivered to me here and the headmaster promised to grant me leave time if the need to travel arises,"
"The government candidates classes are the only advanced classes that could be of your level of education, and even though you got accepted, there are only male students there. And the regular classes will be child's play for you,"
"Louis, I know that already, but if his majesty trusts the headmaster enough to entrust him with my education, who am I to object? I admit that they may be as you say, but, his majesty had always been concerned about me and perhaps it is his way of telling me to take it easy away from the palace life..." Elinor reasoned with her cousin.
There was no way Louis was going to argue the fact that it was the King's wish. As much of a hardhead he was, their uncle and ruler's words were absolute for him.
She was living among a bunch of worrywarts, from her uncle the king, her father and her cousin, and even him... All the men in her family did nothing but constantly worry about her.
Louis remained silent at that, his face rarely wavered from the neutral expression making him look cold. The light reflected on his skin as the carriage made a turn toward the entrance lighting up his handsome face. His long black hair shone as strands from its tied-back tail remained on his shoulder. His narrow soulful light Brown eyes held an intelligent predatory stare that held behind it a genius strategic mind.
Louis might look like an extremely cold person, and his politics tended to border on the cruel side, but to her, he had always been the older brother she'd always looked up to. And he will always be.
"We're here," Louis said just as the carriage stopped. He got down and extended his hand for her to do the same. Just as she got down she felt like she was being watched and looked up to see the figure of someone looking down from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor.
Elinor entered the building and let Louis guide her toward the headmaster's office. He'd stopped in front of a double door on the second floor and knocked hearing a faint 'Enter' right away.
Elinor smiled at the man who came from behind his desk and welcomed them with a wide smile.
"Welcome to the Royal Academy, My dear Elinor. I hope you made good travels,"
The Headmaster was a fit man with a penchant for fancy and unique attires. If there was something you could rely upon with that man it would be to stand out in a crowd. The word ordinary would probably never apply to him under any circumstance and Elinor bet that he would consider it an insult if he was ever called that one day.
From his braided beard that merged with his long brown hair to his frilly outfit and accompanying oriental fan. Everything about him screamed unusual, yet he had a way of making the most prejudiced people accept him the way he was...
"Thank you very much, headmaster," Elinor responded
"Come and let us sit down here and have a chat..." He gestured for them to come in and sit down,
"I always thought that your presence here would be of great influence for our students," He began seeming deep in thought as he flipped his fan with his gloved hand, "Not to mention that you'll have the chance to have contact with people at the same age as you, it's a profitable chance for you to create some durable relationships."
"I'm looking forward to my new academic life, headmaster. If it wasn't for you convincing my father and his majesty my uncle I wouldn't be here today." Elin said remembering how he had practically barged in on them lecturing her uncle about sheltering her too much.
Granted, they were friends since back from their academy days. But still very few people could talk to the king like that.
"From the grades of the test you passed, it was impossible to place you in a normal class, because it will be wasting your time. We put you in the elite classroom, it’s a class reserved for our most talented students. they are all male students, but I'm sure that you'll be at ease with them, they're wonderful gentlemen and you'll get along well. Of course, you'll have the chance to meet female students in the manners, music, art, and dance classes."
An all-male classroom. The headmaster was trying to challenge her. And Elin wasn’t sure she liked where this was going nor did she have the time for it.
" I fully trust your strategy headmaster. I believe that I won't be in a better situation if I were to choose." She responded politely, knowing how useless it would be to argue about anything with the man.
"I heard from Louis that he will be taking care of the paperwork,..."
"Yes, he was kind enough to insist on doing it instead. To let me have the time to get installed"
"It's only natural since you're not in the shape to start working after this long trip," Louis spoke up for the first time, his dignified cold tone could easily intimidate anyone into thinking that they were thought inferior.
"He's right," said the headmaster, "You should take your time and get used to things as much as you can. And since he will be busy taking care of this, I asked one of our best students to guide you around the campus. He should be here at any moment."
"Oh, there was no need to bother them I wouldn't want to burden them in the middle of their studies. I can do it myself!"
She really didn’t want to be introduced to anyone. She was hoping to get through the experience without interacting with anyone other than Louis.
The headmaster definitely wasn’t going to make that easy.
"It is necessary," Louis interrupted surprising her, " You cannot walk around on your own since everyone knows who you are. It would be best if you had an escort to keep your distance for the time being. Azeph is an excellent gentleman, I'm sure that you will have no trouble getting along with him."
"To think that you would compliment someone like this..." Elinor said with a teasing smile looking at her cousin who raised one eyebrow at her.
"I was only stating the truth. Despite his unrealistic views, he's a good gentleman from a suitable family," He answered and Elinor chuckled.
"I thank your deep consideration headmaster. It's precious help I surely needed." She said with a bright smile looking at the headmaster who nodded in agreement.
Right then someone knocked at the door.
"It should be him, come in! " The headmaster said with his lively speech, which didn't fail to be commanding.
The door opened, and a blond, handsome young man, with gentle features and a tall strong body that had clearly been well-trained, stepped inside.
"Elinor, this is Azeph count Highzhar's only son."
"It's an honor to make your acquaintance," she said, with a light smile on her face, as she looked directly into his sky-blue eyes, the same color as his uniform.
Her favorite color…
He looked toward her with a warm smile, while removing his white glove then gallantly kneeled on one knee before her and took her hand in his delicately kissing it.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, lady Elinor. Welcome to the Royal Academy. I hope you had a comfortable journey,"
"Yes, it was very enjoyable indeed, especially the passage through the town." She said while looking at the headmaster.
This one smiled meaningfully and didn't let the chance to brag about the town in his territory slip away.
By the time he was done explaining the reason why his territory was beautiful, Elin had gotten used to the presence of this gallant young noble who’s blue gaze never left her since he got into the office.
Yes, she was still determined to spend her days in the academy on her own…
As they left the headmaster's office, Elinor and Azeph accompanied Louis to the carriage still waiting at the entrance, Azeph said while trying to bring a new subject of conversation. "To think that you were Louis's cousin was coming. No wonder he was called back and forth to prepare for your arrival." Elinor looked at him for a moment when he said Louis's name. It wasn't very common for people to call him that way, even for his comrades. He was too intimidating and distant to allow it. Not that he wasn't distant towards Azeph, it seems like this one wasn't in the least bothered by that attitude. " Well, for some reason it surprises people to learn that we are cousins. Louis takes a lot after his father, while I take after mine. That's why we look completely different." "People are so narrow minded, they don't take the time to see deeper than eye colors and face shapes, if they look a little more deeply they would realize the similarities in our behavior and habits," Louis co
Azeph had heard many things about Lady Elinor Pendragon. About how great of a match she was to the crown prince. About her influence among the ladies of high society in and out of their kingdom. And the many accomplishments she accomplished under his majesty's orders. Although she was still young, she was a leading figure in both the political and social world. What Azeph hadn't heard and hadn't been expecting to find. Is how beautiful she was. Elinor Pendragon wasn't simply beautiful, she was breathtaking. When he entered the room, his eyes fell on her immediately. She was like those fairy paintings his sister had loved so much, so ethereal as if she was only a guest among them and that she would fly away at any moment without notice. As he spoke to her he realized why her beauty wasn't mentioned before. She was a sharp person, as sharp and intelligent as Louis who had been his eternal rival since they first met. That realization floored him. Anyone who saw her intellige
"Will! if you're going to interrupt us at least introduce yourself," Azeph scolded his friend with an exasperated tone. "My apologies.." said loosely the dark-skinned young man, he had light brown hair and forest green eyes that could alone speak of his lineage. he had the look of an outdoorsman, and with the matching carefree personality that goes with it, he seemed like someone who spent a lot of time horseback judging from his riding skills. " No need to apologize, you must be the son of Viscount Marten" Elin responded amused by the surprised expression on his face. "How did you know that? did we meet before?" he asked curiosity lightening his eyes "No. But I've seen your father before, and you two have the same eye color. I've heard that your family has always been known for your unusual eye color." "I'm impressed you noticed that," he said" Since usually, people see other things than my eye color when they see me," He added darkly, "Anyway, let me formally introduce myself,
Elin was having a hard time breathing. Her vision was tunneling on the other guys as they headed toward the table. That white table in the middle of the colorful rose garden with white exquisite chairs and ornate tea sets.It was the same table. Everything was the same. Just like back then. And like back then, she was going to watch him get hurt. She was going to watch him as he...No! No! This wasn't it! This wasn't right. She wasn't back there. It wasn't going to happen again! It couldn't happen. It couldn't, because he was already gone...That realization hit her harder and her chest tightened in pain making it even harder to breathe. She needed to get it together. Right this instant before any of them noticed her.Noah was talking to the black-haired man at the table. Will was following them waving his hands, probably throwing one of his jokes again. And... Where was Azeph?"It's okay, Just breath." Someone said from behind her as a hand gently guided her sideways. She resisted fo
In Elinor's pace, the days at the academy began rather late, for someone who was used to be on his desk at six o'clock every morning, having breakfast at 8:30 and starting lectures at 9:30 was rather laid back for her, or maybe too relaxed. She woke up at 5:00 and finished all her arrangements, she refused to have a maid help her out because she wanted to have some privacy, something she almost never had when she was in the castle.Yet she later had to accept the offer since it was in the rules for the student to have at least a part-time servant. This academy was far from being as luxurious as her father's manor or the royal palace. Yet, it had something she couldn't have there. Freedom. Now she will do as she pleases, and be herself. having everyone worried for too long about her was kind of heavy to deal with. She had to admit that she was in a bad place there for a while, but still, she felt smothered by their attention. At first, all she could do was think about his last words, h
"Princess. Did you know that by giving you this uniform, the headmaster just made you the enemy of every girl in this school?" Will said and Elin heard Azeph caught behind him. "What do you mean?" Elin asked enjoying the situation too much to let it go. And curious about the dynamic around these young men in school.Besides, she doubted she would have another opportunity to see a composed person such as Azeph get embarrassed another time so she soaked it in. "What I mean is that Azeph’s fan club members are going to wonder why you two were wearing matching uniforms. Of course the more, Uh, loyal they are to Azeph, the more curious they would be about this coincidence," "You have a fan club?" Elin asked Azeph with a bright smile enjoying the uncomfortable expression he was making."I don't! I really don't! Will is just making fun of me," Azeph said sounding like he was going to have a headache anytime now. "Don't believe him. He's being modest. He may not have a fan club, but he's a
"Of all the stupid things you could've uttered out of your mouth," Louis said and Elinor wanted to slap her forehead in exasperation. This was going to be hard to watch…“I introduced the new student because she’s of the highest standing in society among our class and the whole school. I didn’t do it out of a sense of duty, she is perfectly capable of doing it herself. She doesn’t even have to do that, because courtesy dictates that you are the ones who should introduce yourself to her. I introduced her because she’s my cousin and family and since school law tries to forego social standing in class she agreed to do it as a sign of humbleness from her. To think that you would disrespect royalty like this. If we had been in court, I would have made sure to have you excited for discourtesy right this instant,”Silence reined over the room as the male student stood there his mouth gaping open.Elinor felt bad for the poor young man, Louis didn’t spare him any mercy. He’d probably made
"Elin, would you like to have some tea with us?" Elin looked up from her book to find Noah smiling down at her. “Sure, I was thinking of having some when I got back to my room anyway,” She told him as she stood up and headed outside with him,“Great, the others would be glad. Louis tries to hide it but he was excited about spending more time with you,” Noah said and Elinor looked at him surprised.“If you’re the one saying this then it must be true,” She said and Noah gave her a smile. There was a reason he was telling her this. Noah would never reveal something personal about anyone. He was always careful about keeping secrets close to his heart. One part of the reason is that he was simply a noble and honest person, the other was to keep his abilities under wrap unless he absolutely had to reveal them.Which was why she was surprised when she realized Azeph and Will knew."Where are the others?" she asked deciding to close the subject for now," They went ahead to the greenhouse. t
The sun shone through the cathedral’s colored glass window as Elinor knelt before her uncle and he put the crown on her head. Before she knew it, she was reciting the pledge that she had known by heart since she was a young girl running around the castle walls with her cousins. She was no longer that young girl. Nor was she the fiancé of the future king or the daughter of the duke. She wasn’t someone’s daughter or their wife or sister. She was her own person. She was the future queen. The person who was going to stand at the top of this country and lead it into a new future.“Hail to the crown princess!” Said her uncle as he stepped back to let her stand up and turn around.Elinor looked down at the crowd to find it filled with familiar faces. Unlike the last time she stood there with Nicolas by her side, she didn’t feel remotely as alone as she felt back then.In contrary, she felt like no matter what path she took, she would never be alone because there are always going to be peopl
“Azeph! Calm down!” Will said taking his arm and pulling him back.Azeph wanted to shake his friend’s arm away but he took a deep breath instead and closed his eyes down trying hard to compose himself.“Call the guards,” He said again this time his voice more calm and collected.Louis sighed and nodded toward Alan who left the room looking for the guards.“We’re going to need a doctor for Noah,” Azeph finally said leaning against the bed and checking on Noah who was still unconscious,“It must have been a hard blow,” He said with a worried glance toward Louis who nodded.“If you promise that you’re under control I will go call for a doctor for Noah. We need him to wake up and tell us what happened anyway since those knights clearly don’t know what’s going on,” Louis answered,“I am under control,” he told Louis who nodded and left the room quietly.Azeph looked around the room. There was no sign of struggle and Noah was on the ground near the chair he must have been using to sit by El
Azeph leaned down in the bed pressing a kiss to Elinor’s forehead. He watched her sleep peacefully for a moment before making his way out of the room to find the guys waiting for him.“Ready?” He asked them. And they all nodded with determination.“I am counting on you,” He told them.He made his way down the stairs as they followed him. Once he was outside he mounted his horse and galloped out of there followed by Will, Louis and Alan.Noah had chosen to stay there and keep Elinor company until she woke up while Stella was still away dealing with the students at the academy. He said that he had a bad feeling since all this started and insisted on remaining by her side and Azeph agreed appointing some guards to them to make sure that they both remained safe.Lloyd went to the artisan’s workshop before them and was supposed to assert the situation by the time they got there. At the entrance of the academy, they found a car ready for them as the captain had promised and they abandoned t
After that Azeph left the security team’s central building and made his way back toward the residence. By now, Louis must be done spreading out word of Elinor’s poisoning and the Academy must be greatly disrupted and shaken. The perfect opportunity to look for the culprit. As soon as he got there he found Noah and Alan waiting for his return.“Did you find something out?” Noah asked him and Azeph shook his head.“I want you to head down there and help Will look through the records for anything that might catch your attention.” He told Noah and he nodded.“Of course! Stella is waiting for Louis to come back so that she can start her investigation,” He added.“Stella is the best when it comes to gathering information. But we have someone much better than her. I sent him to look into things too,” He said,“Why don’t you go help Stella with her investigation. You might find something useful. Ask Daisy to discretely help you too, you and Stella will stand out if you ask too many questions,
Azeph stepped out of the residence that was reserved for Elinor and made his way toward the one place he needed to make sure of first before anything else. The record room. The security within the Royal academy’s grounds was well maintained by a group of thorough and competent security experts who were trained at the capital. They were as good as royal knights when it came to their combat ability and some of them even used to be knights at the royal guard but decided to leave for this job because it held less stress and political issues.Azeph knew some of those knights but the person he knew the most was their commander. The man who was leading security system at the academy was no one other than Azeph’s instructor, the man who thought him everything from how to hold a sword to how to become a swordsman.“Are you going to see Captain Hugh?” Will asked and Azeph nodded silently.Captain Hugh was a strong man. Just plain strong and the perfect image of a leader ready to go into a battl
Elinor slowly opened her eyes to the sunlight. She slowly moved her body wincing when she realized that her sore muscles and organs were not ready for her to move yet.But the excruciating pain that felt as if she was being ripped apart fro the inside out wasn’t there anymore. She was going to be okay. She was going to live.“You’re awake…” Said someone from her bedside and she turned her head around to find herself looking at her with concern in his eyes.“Louis….” She whispered her voice croaked and her words coming out heavy on her tongue.“Are you feeling any better?” He asked“Much better,” she answered with a soft smile and he nodded looking deep in thoughts.“Did something happen? Where’s Azeph?” She asked immediately noting the lack of presence of the one person she wanted to see the most.“He’s still outside looking into your case. He went out as soon as he made sure that the antidote was working last night. He had been investigating since then and now he’s looking into thing
Pain… So much pain. It hurt everywhere. It hurt to breath, it hurt to move, it hurt to even be alive. How long did she have to wait for the pain to stop? How long will this go on. Why was her body hurting so much that she felt like she was being ripped apart from inside out.A liquid built up in her throat and she fought hard to ignore it. But her body’s natural reaction was much stronger than her willpower. When she coughed, she could feel the liquid being projected out of her mouth. Probably another gulp of blood seeping from inside her. But the excruciating pain the resulted on her cough was so blinding and painful that she thought that she was going to die.But her body wasn’t this graceful or merciful to her. The pain still has to continue because her body still choose to fight against the poison. Even though she was so tired that she was starting to wish for death. She heard voices around her and felt someone press something soft against her mouth.“She’s in pain, she needs more
"So in the end it happened,..." The headmaster said with a sigh as he watched the doctor leave the room.Future who was by his side made his way toward the side cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey pouring himself a cup and offering one to both Louis and the headmaster.Louis refused, and the headmaster gratefully agreed taking the cup and downing it in one gulp. The poor man was so stressed and worried that he was taking soliste in alcohol."She was going to tell them everything today..." Louis said and Future looked at them quizikally."Everything about what?"He asked as he walked toward them his cup in his hand."She was going to leave the Acedemy in the end of the year," Louis said."Why?" Future asked, "It took the headmaster so much effort to convince his majesty to let her come back." "The situation with the neightboring countries is already unstable thanks to the recent events. They think that our monarchy is falling appart. She needs to be there and set an example to m
The doctor looked at Azeph and shook his head hopelessly. Azeph felt as if his world collapsed with that single motion and he felt himself take one step forward then wobble for a moment before pulling himself together and walking toward him and standing in front of him."How's her condition?" He asked quietly."Not very good I am afraid. Her body is under so much strain. It seems to have been a very strong poison." The doctor said darkly, "Her organs are barely holding on as it is. And I can't chance to give her any calming medicine because I'm afraid that they would react with the poison and make her state worse. If only you knew the nature of her poison..." The doctor finished and Azeph sighed and stepped back.Louis who was silently standing behind him stepped forward."I'm afraid that we still don't know the nature of the poison. We will need an investigation to figure that out." Louis lied easily.Meanwhile, Azeph fought not to clench his hands into fists. He knew that divulging
