Prologue
Wandering alone in New York's back alleys late at night is not a wise course of action. Eugene had generally lived his life by making wise decisions, but today was an exception. This was because he had just received news that he passed the bar exam. Eugene had a celebration party with his friends and left the bar alone very late at night, quite intoxicated, walking slowly through New York's night streets. To make matters worse, he went deep into a narrow, dirty back alley to relieve a sudden urge to urinate.
Eugene enjoyed the feeling of relief as he urinated on the street, hiding his body in the darkness of the dim alley. With alcohol making his body sway, his stream of urine wobbled back and forth, painting the wall. Having consumed so much tequila that it might as well have been flowing through his veins instead of blood, the tequila scent in his urine wasn't just his imagination.
Eugene heard a suspicious sound just as he finished his business and was straightening his pants.
"Wait, just a moment!"
There was a hasty sound of footsteps, and then someone's voice. It was coming from around the corner of the alley, just a few steps ahead.
Though quiet, it was clear that the owner of the voice was quite terrified. Such a sound in a back alley like this was not a good sign. Even in his drunken state, Eugene instinctively pressed his back against the wall, concealing himself in the dark shadows.
"Wait, just listen to me. Valentine."
Unfortunately, the man's voice was getting closer. Judging by the sound of shoe soles dragging, the man seemed to be backing toward the corner of the alley where Eugene was hiding.
Eugene, who had been about to hurry out of the alley, paused at the name the man called.
'Valentine?'
It was a name that didn't match the man's frightened voice at all. Valentine. Not an unheard-of name, but certainly uncommon. Saint Valentine. Valentine's Day. Suddenly, curiosity arose. What kind of person was this Valentine who made the man speak in such a frightened voice? In the end, Eugene chose to observe the situation a bit longer while holding his breath, rather than running away.
"P-please, spare me. Please!"
The man cried out desperately. Finally, the man came into Eugene's view. As expected, he was cautiously backing up. The man, who appeared to be in his late forties, was wearing a gray pinstriped suit and looked Italian. Only after seeing the terrified face of the man did Eugene realize that this wasn't simply a situation to satisfy his curiosity.
"Valentine!"
The Valentine that the man was desperately calling finally revealed himself. Eugene gasped the moment he saw Valentine's face. The blonde hair that shone brightly even in the darkness and the pale, beautiful face resembled an angel who had stepped out of a famous painting. Could that truly be a human appearance? Drunk Eugene stared at Valentine's face, forgetting even to breathe.
"Bruni. Are you running away because you want to play with me?"
The beautiful angel with blonde hair asked. His voice was a calm baritone, strangely clear and penetrating to the ears, as charming and sweet as his beautiful appearance. Perhaps the reason he was called Valentine was because of that sweet voice.
The angel was pointing a gun at the man. Seeing the unusually long barrel, it must have had a silencer attached. The angel's eyes were gleaming with cruelty, and his beautiful lips were twisted upward. Thanks to this, Eugene was able to come to his senses.
Now that he could think clearly, he saw that the man was clutching one of his thighs with his hand. Judging by how the pants around his thigh were sticking to his leg, it must have been soaked in blood. This Valentine person had already shot the man once. And the fact that he was openly showing his face meant that he had no intention of letting the man live.
This was definitely not a good situation. To be precise, it was a very dangerous one. Eugene deeply regretted being curious about the name Valentine and missing the chance to escape, but it was already too late. All he could do was hide in the shadows cast by the wall, hold his breath, and pray not to be discovered.
"Valentine. I have nothing to do with this. I just received a small share of the money he gave. I have absolutely nothing to do with what he did!"
The man desperately explained. It was natural, as his life was at stake. But the blonde man, Valentine, who was looking at him, rather seemed to be enjoying himself, curling up his lips. That was enough to tell. He was no stranger to killing people.
"Please, give me a chance to explain to the boss. The boss will surely understand if he hears my side!"
Perhaps because his life was hanging by a thread, the man pleaded desperately with a trembling voice. Then the blonde man called Valentine pulled out a white stick he had been holding in his mouth. What came out of his mouth seemed to be a lollipop. Due to the darkness, Eugene couldn't distinguish the color of the candy.
"Candy, if you guess what flavor it is, I'll talk to Don Cariello."
The blonde man showed the lollipop once and then put it back in his mouth.
The middle-aged man named Bruni took a harsh breath.
The distance between the two men and Eugene was just over ten steps. But Eugene's figure remained hidden in the darkness. Eugene wondered if he should slip away now. He didn't care about the fate of the man named Bruni. Eugene wasn't particularly known for his sense of justice. He definitely declined the stupid act of getting involved in other people's business and suffering for it. Especially judging by the word "boss" that came from the middle-aged man's mouth, his suit, and the term "Don" mentioned by the blonde-haired man, these people were certainly connected to the mafia. In this case, even reporting to the police could be dangerous.
Eugene took one step back as quietly as possible. Fortunately, the two men didn't seem to notice his presence at all. Eugene maintained his tension and took another step back. After taking three steps back, he heard:
"...Strawberry?"
A faint sound escaped from the middle-aged man's mouth. Eugene involuntarily looked at the face of the man called Valentine.
"D-did I...get it right?"
The middle-aged man asked with a trembling voice.
Valentine stared at the man and rolled the candy in his mouth. The white stick protruding from his mouth rotated accordingly. Gulp. The sound of the middle-aged man swallowing was loud.
"Did I...get it right?"
The middle-aged man asked carefully. A faint hope was seeping into his face, which was drenched in sweat. The blonde man, Valentine, suddenly narrowed his eyes and smiled kindly. That smile alone created the illusion that the dark and dirty back alley had brightened. Accordingly, the expression of the middle-aged man bloomed. And the next moment,"Wrong."The blonde man murmured.Phut-!With a low sound, the middle-aged man collapsed. The blonde man walked over to the fallen middle-aged man and casually shot him once in the right cheek. Then he turned the body over with his toe and shot him once more in the back of the head. Phut, phut. Each time a bullet hit, the middle-aged man's body briefly convulsed. The liquid slowly spread around the body of the man sprawled on the dirty floor. Blood should certainly be red, but due to the darkness in the alley, it appeared pitch black. The middle-aged man looked as if he was lying on a pool of black oil.Whether it was the shock or the alcohol
14:37.Eugene blankly stared at the red numbers on the digital clock on his bedside table, then exhaled heavily. His breath reeked of alcohol. His head hurt. It felt like someone was hammering the crown of his head."...fuck...."Eugene muttered the curse under his breath as he got out of bed. He staggered over to find aspirin. His hand trembled slightly as he fumbled on the medicine shelf due to the terrible hangover and headache. After swallowing the aspirin, Eugene lay back down on the bed and waited for the medicine to take effect.14:41.Four minutes had passed in the meantime. Eugene stared blankly at the red numbers on the digital clock, hoping the medicine would work as quickly as possible. Then suddenly he frowned. Murder. Blood. Gun. Blonde hair."...Valentine."As the quiet mutter escaped his lips, memories of the previous night flashed through his mind like a film reel.A dark night. A dirty, dark alley behind a New York bar. A fugitive. A killer. Murder. And a witness. It
Sensing the calmer atmosphere, Angel crawled out from under the bed. And as if he had never run away, he rubbed his head against Eugene's arm affectionately. Then he climbed onto Eugene's lap and meowed."Angel."Eugene gently stroked Angel's neck. Angel's fur was very soft as he purred. His narrowed blue eyes were full of contentment. Looking at Angel's blue eyes, Eugene was reminded of the blonde killer. His eyes were also this blue."...Valentine."Eugene muttered what might be the killer's name or nickname.Valentine.A ruthless killer with an angelic appearance as if he had just stepped out of a masterpiece painting. His lips tasted like cherry. The taste from his memory came alive on his tongue. Eugene was startled and firmly closed his mouth. Then he picked up the purring Angel and headed back to where the sports bag was.He was about to put Angel in the sports bag and zip it up.Knock, knock. There was a knock at the door. His body froze. Lightning seemed to run down his spine
Although it was past lunchtime, customers were sparsely seen in the restaurant. Leo walked straight inside without the waiter's guidance. Judging by the fact that the waiter saw him but didn't approach, he seemed to either have received prior notice or was acquainted with him."I've brought him," Leo said briefly as he stopped in front of a table. His tone was identical to when he had threatened Eugene by pressing a gun against his stomach earlier. Two men were sitting at the four-person table. Both were elderly with white hair, and their elegant suits were particularly eye-catching.One of the elderly men looked at Eugene standing behind Leo and put down the fork and knife he was holding. He wiped his mouth with a napkin and gestured for Eugene to sit in the empty seat across from him. Eugene hesitated to move and looked at Leo. Leo nodded slightly as if telling him to do as instructed and pulled out the chair for him.Once Eugene sat down, Leo turned around as if his job was done. H
"Oh, Angel!" Ricardo Luciano exclaimed happily, embracing a man who approached his side. The tall man in casual attire bent his waist considerably to allow Luciano to embrace him and received kisses on both cheeks. The man who had been embraced and kissed by Luciano straightened his waist. The blue eyes of the remarkably tall man immediately turned toward Eugene. Eugene involuntarily stopped breathing when he saw the man's face. It was the blonde killer, Valentine. While Eugene remained frozen, the blonde killer also exchanged Italian greetings with lawyer Mateo Martino. After completing the greetings, he fixed his gaze on Eugene again and sat down in the seat next to him.Valentine's blue eyes did not leave Eugene's face. Eugene stubbornly kept his gaze fixed straight ahead. He didn't want to make eye contact with him. Luciano looked alternately at Valentine and Eugene, then smiled deeply, creating deep wrinkles around his eyes."Our Angel has always been very particular about people
The place Valentine guided him to was the entrance of a store located at the corner of the first floor of the building.Ding-a-ling.A small bell rang as he pushed the door. Eugene momentarily stopped moving, surprised by the unexpected interior of the store. The colorful candies filling each wall and display case overwhelmed the view. Round and flat lollipops, cane-shaped candies, various flavored lollipops, and long, round display tubes filled with candies and jellies. Small candy bags and large candy bags. Candies of all colors, flavors, and shapes filled the spacious store. After briefly surveying the array of candies, Eugene's eyes caught the front glass window of the store. The store name was written in colorful letters on the glass window."Candy Store"He scanned the other front glass window and the interior of the store, but no other store name was visible. Candy Store. That was simply the name of the store.Though it appeared narrow and cluttered at first glance due to the d
Perhaps it was simply the mentality of playing with prey before killing it. Angel often did the same when catching cockroaches. The fat cat would tap the cockroach with its front paws, making it run around, and when it got bored of that, it would tear off the antennae and legs one by one and watch it struggle. When Eugene couldn't stand it anymore and wrapped the cockroach in tissue to flush it down the toilet, only then would the cat lose interest and slink under the bed to take a nap. If Valentine planned to play with Eugene before killing him, unlike the cockroach, his final destination wouldn't be the toilet but the bottom of the Brooklyn harbor or the East River, not far from here."Shouldn't we pay for these first?"Eugene quietly asked instead of accepting the bag."I'm the owner here. You like candy, don't you?"Valentine asked with a bright smile. This blonde beauty who owned the candy store—something Eugene hadn't realized last night—seemed slightly dimwitted when speaking i
As soon as the car started moving, Valentine placed his hand over Eugene's again. Though it was the second time this had happened, Eugene was still flustered enough to bite his tongue. When their eyes met, Valentine slightly crinkled the corners of his eyes in a smile that was as sweet as honey and made Eugene's heart flip. What the hell is this man trying to do with me?!Eugene asked himself the same question for the third time internally. But it was closer to shock. Whether aware of Eugene's thoughts or not, Valentine slid his fingers from Eugene's fingers to the back of his hand. The touch was so suggestive that Eugene finally understood what this man wanted with him. The blonde murderer Valentine was currently making sexual advances toward Eugene.Sexual advances, really.Eugene internally screamed and unconsciously stole a glance at a certain area. Between Valentine's legs. Though he couldn't remember at all, Eugene had sucked the thing in there last night to save his life. Not r
Leo scratched his forehead, seemingly embarrassed by his own flimsy excuse."I'll tell the Belmontes you're on a business trip."Valentine said nonchalantly, then leaned back into the car seat. His face made it clear he had no intention of listening to any more protests."We're going to Miami on a private jet?"Jerry, who had been keeping quiet, cautiously asked Leo. When Leo nodded, Jerry raised his eyebrows as if he'd hit the jackpot. An uncomfortable silence fell over the car. Valentine had always been that kind of man, but it couldn't feel good to be dragged around like this in such a situation. Eugene didn't feel like protesting further to a man who would do as he pleased anyway, regardless of objections. How long had he been staring out the car window? Something touched his forearm resting on his leg.Looking down, he saw white fingers creeping onto his forearm. They carefully slid down his arm, across the back of his hand, and slipped between Eugene's fingers. When left undistu
"Don Datero came to see you, didn't he? After yesterday, Eugene brother must have become the most famous person in New York. If Don Datero came all the way here to talk with you personally, that says it all, doesn't it?"Jerry chattered with an excited expression."Of course it's natural. Not only did you expose the FBI and Don Colvino's conspiracy by faking your death, but you also instantly—BANG!—took out Don Colvino while he was threatening Don Luciano with a gun to his head. This is practically like saving all of New York!""..."Hearing the heavily embellished heroic tale that Jerry had been spouting while drunk yesterday now coming out in broad daylight, Eugene felt like he wanted to clamp Jerry's mouth shut."If it weren't for our Eugene brother, wouldn't the council and all of New York have been destroyed by those FBI bastards? Right, brother?"Jerry sought agreement from Angelo Casani, who was approaching."That's right."Angelo Casani readily agreed with Jerry and went furth
They spoke simultaneously and then fell silent at the same time."...My mouth was dry from drinking too much, so I ate some candy."Eugene calmly said, picking up the candy wrappers and putting them on the nightstand."I see."Jerry nodded, adjusting the tray to a comfortable position for Eugene with an awkward expression. Eugene straightened his posture and removed the sheet. Two more candy wrappers were revealed, scattered on the bed."...Those too?"Jerry asked. Eugene silently collected the plastic wrappers and placed them on the nightstand. The freshly made frittata stimulated his appetite. Eugene moistened his throat with water, drained half a cup of strong coffee, and immediately picked up his fork. Jerry, perched on the edge of the bed watching Eugene eat, kept glancing at the candy wrappers on the nightstand. The twitching at the corner of his mouth suggested he had something he wanted to say."Could you get me another cup of coffee?"After finishing the remaining coffee and
"Jerry."Before Eugene could offer any comfort or greeting, Jerry's shoulders began to shake."I thought... you... were... dead..."Jerry sobbed, uttering each word separately, and as it became difficult to stand on one leg, he slowly slid downward while still embracing Eugene. Despite trying to keep Jerry upright, it was beyond Eugene's strength to support the large young man. Eventually, Jerry, just like on the first day he came to the Belmonte residence, wrapped his arms around Eugene's calves and shed tears. Tony Rico, who had initially watched with a mocking gaze, finally had to forcibly drag Jerry away, ending the emotional reunion."...I need to clean up."As the welcome was winding down, Eugene spoke while examining his disheveled appearance. Jerry, who had been sitting sprawled on the floor, sniffled and wobbled to his feet, tucking his crutch under his armpit. Perhaps because he was severely injured during the attack, or maybe because something had happened between them afte
"I'm sorry."The elderly man holding the gun to Don Luciano's temple, Don Colvino, apologized to the Chirico brothers with a melancholy expression."Everyone would be wise not to move."Don Colvino warned, pressing the gun muzzle harder against Don Luciano's temple. Leo, who had been aiming his gun at Don Colvino from right beside him, stepped back with a troubled expression."Unbelievable."Giovanni Belmonte was the first to mutter in a cold tone. Mateo and Alberto, who had been friends with Santino Colvino for decades, stood frozen with their eyes wide open in shock."Oh, Santino. My friend."Don Luciano sighed with a face immersed in sadness. Don Colvino's face contorted as if about to cry."I'm sorry, Ricardo. But I had no choice. Melania, my only granddaughter, was arrested on drug possession charges. Ricardo, you know Melania. She's a good girl who got into college on a scholarship. She just made a momentary mistake, falling for a friend's deception.""You could have told me.""
Just before reaching the yacht, Eugene looked at Valentine, who stood tall beside him. His golden hair, fluttering in the sea breeze, sparkled like gold dust under the strong sunlight. From the moment they boarded the yacht, Valentine and Eugene would return to being Luciano and Belmonte. It was uncertain how their relationship would unfold afterward. They hadn't discussed this point at all. But somehow, Eugene wasn't worried. He had a vague feeling that everything would work out. It wasn't forced optimism. It was simply a groundless belief that Valentine would resolve things on his own. Finally, they reached the yacht. Leo went first, pushing the wheelchair across the gangplank. Valentine followed behind."My God, Ricky! Valentine!"Mateo exclaimed, hugging Don Luciano and Valentine in turn and showering them with kisses. Alberto was no exception.Eugene walked toward Giovanni Belmonte, who stood tall. Giovanni Belmonte waited until Eugene reached him, then extended both arms to embr
"Now, now. Since this meeting is primarily to mediate the war between Luciano and Belmonte, let's focus on resolving that first. Don't forget, with the FBI involved, we need to wrap this up quickly."Don Colvino, who had been quiet until now, stepped in to urge reconciliation. But the atmosphere for reconciliation had already been broken."We can reconcile whenever we want. Right now, it seems we need to discuss something more important first."Don Datero, who had been sitting silently with an expressionless face, spoke up. Luca Datero, a young boss only in his thirties, typically kept a low profile at such gatherings out of respect for the other more senior bosses."I believe we need to first address the evidence against Don Luciano that the prosecutor has allegedly secured. If that evidence is real, it means one of our high-ranking Cosa Nostra officials is an FBI rat. This is no time to be talking about wars or reconciliation while we're carrying such a dangerous bomb inside our ran
The New York Council was convened again after just a few months. This council was called at the request of Don Pepe Cariello, boss of the Bonino Family, with the primary purpose of mediating the war between Luciano and Belmonte. Not only the warring parties Luciano and Belmonte, but also Colvino and Confezzioni, who had joined the conflict between the two families, immediately agreed to the council meeting. The reason was simple: Don Luciano's detention. Thanks to the council chairman facing imminent indictment, the council date was quickly established. Don Cariello, responsible for organizing this council, informed each family of the date, time, and location. Nobody raised any objections. The notified council location was an upscale residential area in Belport, Long Island. Luxury cars departing in succession from New York made their way to the driveway of the beach house. Men from the Bonino Family greeted visitors respectfully. The Bonino Family, typically considered the lowest ran
"Pizza?"Valentine asked out of nowhere.Eugene was about to snap, "You're thinking about pizza in this situation?" but simply shrugged instead. While it was absurd that Valentine was only thinking about dinner menu without any worries or concerns, it was also just like him. And as always, watching him be so carefree and confident somehow inspired a groundless belief that everything would work out."Let's go with pizza."When Eugene nodded, Leo turned the wheel with a cheerful face, saying he knew a place with killer pizza.* * *"How long does it take to confirm one identity? What? That's your problem. Stop making excuses and make sure you confirm it and give me results today. Otherwise, I'll visit your home tonight, drag your sleeping body out of bed, and roast you alive!"BANG!Tony Rico slammed down the receiver so hard it nearly broke, then continued fuming, unable to contain his anger."Still nothing?" Fredo asked in a flat tone as he drank his coffee. Tony flopped down in the
