Chapter 221

Author: Hardy Banana
Recently, my dad had been skipping social events just to have dinner with me.

At home, there would be certain words that we could not say.

For example, we were not allowed to talk about watching TV or movies. Anything related to eyes was off-limits. If someone accidentally brought it up, someone else would clear their throat to remind them.

There was also someone we could not talk about.

It was Zach.

Everyone was eager to talk to me, so they took turns. We chatted about all kinds of things, from places to current events.

Sophie told me that my dad even read a whole book about mythical creatures just so that he would have something to discuss with me. This explained why he had been bringing up all these strange beings lately.

While everyone chatted with me, they avoided mentioning Zach. It was like he had vanished from the world.

Even Mary and Eloise never brought him up when they came to see me. It was as if he did not exist.

They did not mention Zach because they thought th

Sophie jumped up and quickly ended the call. However, she was too late. I had heard all the things I should not have heard. Her face was right before me, and I could faintly see her features.I touched her face. “I’ve moved on from Zach. I don’t care whom he gets back together with.”Sophie suddenly pressed her ear against my chest, and I asked, “What are you doing?”“I want to hear what a broken heart sounds like.”Everyone assumed that I could not move on. Was I that horrible? Why would I date Hayden if I had not moved on from Zach?I pulled Sophie’s head away from my chest, and it was like pulling up a stubborn weed. “You can choose to believe it or not.”“Do you really not care about him anymore?”“More than ever.”She mumbled, “I’ve been trying not to talk about him, and it’s killing me. So, do you want to know what happened with Zach?”“I’ll listen if it’s gossip.”“Okay, here’s the scoop.” Sophie cleared her throat. “After you sold Yonder Trading to him, Cecilia star

After we got on the plane, Sophie kept sneaking glances at me. I actually felt pretty calm. I believed that I was handling the news better than she was. After the plane had been flying for a while, Sophie suddenly turned to me and said, “Is Zach completely blind? What does he love about Cecilia? She just wants to use him for support. If Zach was poor, would Cecilia still care about him?”“If you keep talking like this, I might think that you used to have a crush on Zach.”“Ugh, no way! You’re reading too much into it.”“By the way, hasn’t he had surgery on that eye yet?”“Nope. Isn’t that strange?”It was beyond strange.During the long flight, I kept falling asleep, and Sophie asked, “Why are you sleeping so much?”“Try being pregnant with twins and see how you feel.”“Who’s the father of your babies?”“Who do you think?”She fell silent. When we landed in Madrid, Cameron and Rachel came to pick us up. He did not know that I could not see. At this moment, I only saw a

I was not sure how long I would stay. Even though I was not in a hurry, Sophie had to go back. The future was uncertain, and I did not know what tomorrow would bring.I had never been to Cameron and Rachel’s house. The last time I visited Spain, I just had dinner with them and Zach. The car entered through the gate and traveled along the garden for a long time. Sophie leaned in and whispered, “Rich people are something else. This place is bigger than both our houses. The garden looks like a park, and there’s a fountain as well as a man-made lake. Isn’t that insane?”Sophie and I used to believe that rich people were all insane. Finally, the car stopped in front of the house. Sophie helped me get out and whispered, “This house looks like a church, with its Gothic style. I wonder if there are priests or nuns inside.”“Shut up.”Rachel took my hand and pulled me inside. She pointed around and said, “Cassia, look! That hallway leads to my piano room. Over there’s my game room, and

“Why do you ask?” I asked as I touched her face.“Dad said that something’s off about you.”Cameron was sensitive. He would probably notice that I was blind by the end of dinner tonight. In the evening, Cameron took us to a restaurant that served authentic Spanish food. I remembered that Spanish ham had a great taste and strong smoky flavor. After we sat down, Rachel said, “Cassia, I need to go to the bathroom.”Sophie immediately stood up. “I’ll go with you.”“I want Cassia to go with me.”Cameron gently said, “Rachel, be good and go with Sophie.”With that, Sophie took Rachel to the restroom, and I pretended to look at the menu. I could see some bright colors because the pictures were colorful.Cameron asked me, “What do you want to eat?”“This one.” I pointed randomly.“You want to get a drink?”“Oh.” I laughed and flipped to another page. “My Spanish isn’t good. I read it wrong.”“I gave you the Sommersettese menu.” Many restaurants in Spain had Sommersettese menus for

He had been away for a day, but a whole year had passed…This “whole year” had not been great to me.There was a slide at the back of the restaurant. Before our food arrived, Sophie took Rachel over there to play with it.Meanwhile, I was fiddling with a small bottle of sauce on the table. It was smooth and shaped like a little cat with a tail.Just then, I heard Cameron say, “I’m not surprised you broke up with Zach. What surprises me is that you’re with that doctor now.”“Do you think I would waste my life with Zach?”“When you rejected me at the airport, that’s what I thought you were going to do,” Cameron said gently.Even though my hearing was better, I could not tell how he felt. Was he sad or regretful? Cameron never showed his emotions on his face. He always seemed calm, no matter what.Even so, he was bringing up the past. To be honest, I did not take his confession at the airport seriously.I did not believe that Cameron loved me. He liked and admired me, but what

I still had a long life to live, so I could come again with Hayden.I was starting to see him as part of my future, which was good. It meant that I was slowly moving on from Zach.Cameron had planned to take us for a walk after dinner. It would have been along a famous seaside avenue in Madrid. The lights there made the sea look beautiful. Unfortunately, he decided to cancel because of my eyes. When we got back to his house, Rachel asked me to help with her bath and read her a bedtime story.Cameron stepped in and said that I was tired.Rachel immediately tugged at my clothes and sadly said, “Cassia, don’t you like me anymore? You didn’t carry me when you came this time.”I squatted down and pulled Rachel into my arms. “I’ll carry you once I have the babies.”I could tell that she needed me. Even though she had many people around her who could give her love, she did not accept it from just anyone.Although I could not help Rachel with her bath, I could still read her a bedtim

I was curious about it too. It was clear that Cameron and Ms. Fowler had some sort of romantic connection. But I knew that it was better not to ask too many questions about such things. So, I pushed Sophie into the bedroom. “Time to take a bath and go to sleep.”“Why don’t I go and see what Ms. Fowler looks like?”“Don’t cause me trouble, Sophie. Remember that you’re here to play a role.”“What role?”“My maid.”“Bah,” she said in annoyance.I lay in bed, and Sophie lay down beside me.“Cassia, I have some news about Zach. Do you want to hear it?” she asked.“Whatever.”“Right, acting like you don’t care.”“Of course I’m interested. We’ve known each other for twenty years, and he’s my ex-husband. But I only treat it as gossip. Aren’t you curious about him too?”“Good point.” Sophie turned to face me while she chewed on bubble gum. I could smell the strong strawberry flavor. “Zach moved out of the Gordon family’s mansion.”“You already told me that.”“Mr. Gordon is furious

Before I fell asleep, I gave Sophie a poke. “Hey.”“Hmm?” she mumbled while she was half-asleep.“Do you think I went blind because I picked Zach? Like, maybe God thought that I was blind for choosing him, so He made me blind for real?”“Cassia, don’t overthink it. You’ll be okay.”I felt a bit restless, but I still ended up sleeping pretty well. The next morning, I woke up to small, soft hands touching my face. I knew that it was Rachel.I smiled and grabbed her hands. “Got you!”She giggled. “Cassia, come jogging with me!”“Are you into fitness already?”“We’re having our last parent-child race at kindergarten, and I want to win!”With that kind of spirit, of course I had to support her. So, I kicked Sophie awake. “Get up. We’re going jogging.”Sophie groaned as she sat up. “You guys are crazy for waking up this early.”There was a trail around the mountain near Cameron’s house. The air was fresh, and it was perfect for a nice walk.I could not run, but I could still wal

Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Tell Lucy I’ll be waiting for her in the car.” Austin walked out of the bridal shop, and Sophie looked dispirited. “I was quite happy, bu

“You’re getting married too?”“I’ll be your best man or maid of honor. What? You’re too cheap to pay for the outfits?”“You, my best man?”“Look around you. Are there any single people left?”Sophie rolled her eyes. “Hah, I wasn’t planning on inviting you.”Kingston tried to shake Austin’s hand, but Austin ignored him. Sophie got mad and pulled Kingston away. “Don’t pay attention to him. He thinks he’s too good for anyone. He’s crazy.”“Sophie,” I warned.“What? He’s always acting crazy!” she yelled.I was not sure if Austin really wanted to be Sophie’s best man, or if it was just an excuse to come here.Anyway, Austin went to change too. I could not tell the difference between the best man’s and groom’s outfits. However, the difference between the bridesmaid and bride was clear. While Sophie was posing in front of the mirror in her wedding dress, Austin came out of the fitting room.Austin was very thin, and the suit hung loosely on him, but it still looked good.He had a

Sophie’s wedding preparations were progressing quickly. She limped to work in the mornings and dragged me along in the afternoons to buy wedding stuff.I felt like the wedding was just an excuse for her to go shopping.“This afternoon, Kingston and I are trying on our wedding outfits. You should come too.”“It’s your wedding. Why should I come?”“To help me choose! I look good in everything, so it’s hard to pick.”“If it’s that hard, just buy them all. Aren’t you rich?”“Why are you so grouchy?” She leaned closer and observed me. “Cassia, are your hormones off balance?”“I’m pregnant, so everything’s a mess right now.”After some thought, I called Austin and told him, “Sophie’s trying on wedding dresses this afternoon.”“Okay,” he replied in his usual lifeless tone.“Aren’t you going to say anything to her?”“Don’t eat too much. The wedding dress will be a pain to alter.”I was so angry that I hung up. He was so stubborn. I was sure that he would regret it and cry later.M

Austin was the weakest among us when we were kids. He could not climb trees, run, or do anything physically demanding. Instead, he would play board games and puzzles with us.Sophie always thought that he was smart, and she admired him.I never imagined that someone I grew up with might die so soon.“You should leave,” he said weakly. “She should be done by now.”“Austin.” I wanted to say something more, but he turned his back to me.He did not want to listen, so I had no choice but to leave. As I reached the door, I heard him say, “Actually, this is a good thing.”Was he saying that Sophie marrying Kingston was a good thing? What was good about it?I felt like grabbing Sophie over. I wanted to point at the dying man in bed and say, “This guy loves you more than you know. He helped you test Kingston’s character. He thinks about you all the time. He comes to see you every night using his half-sister as an excuse, but he’s dying. He doesn’t want you to be sad, so he plans to die

“I just went for a checkup.” Austin walked over to me. “Why are you sweating so much?”He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and gave it to me. Honestly, only Austin would still carry a handkerchief in his condition.I wiped my sweat. “I came with Sophie to get her cast off, and I thought I’d stop by to see you.”“Get her cast off? I thought that wasn’t until next month?”“She insisted on getting it off today. The doctor checked, and her bone is healing well, so it’s fine for her to take it off.”“When did she start caring so much about her looks?” Austin walked back to his room, and I followed him.He sat down and seemed a little out of breath. I had already asked the doctor about him. Austin could not engage in any physical activity; he could not even walk fast.I was about to pour him some water, but he waved me off. “Don’t bother. I’m not thirsty. How could I let you take care of me? I might be a patient, but you’re pregnant.”At least, he could still joke. If I were him
