Life can be a series of unfortunate events or it can be an adventure. The choice isn’t always yours but the road you’re predestined to take will always take you to where you were meant to be no matter what choice you make. The road I had walked started out smooth, I had faced many hard choices but I was always destined to end up what I became.
It took me a while to come to terms with those decisions and I reveled in the path I was on. It was filled with violence and blood and it satiated my beast. He was angry, angry at the world and angry at the people that filled it.
I grew up in a loving house, my parents weren’t your normal run of the mill parents and the word ‘asshole’ featured a lot. My father was strict and he had no time for bullshit but he was also our biggest ally. He covered for us a lot, much to our mother’s frustration. She was loving and caring but she expected us to be gentlemen and taught us that we always represented the lair.
The lair was important but family came first. Our father included both of us in Sire training and he didn’t treat us differently and as far as twins go, we could communicate with our eyes and we were as close as twins could be.
Our father had expanded his lair and it now not only included the whole of Aurora but he had also taken over Geneva, Yorkville, Naperville, Elgin and Wheaton. We had many warriors and soon after we were born my father, together with his friends and the Elders, created the Elite Hunters Team.
The EH Team consisted of dragonkin, witches, vampires and wolves who hunted other supernatural beings. Those that went rogue and broke the laws of both sides were hunted down and eliminated so that history wouldn’t repeat itself where someone like Joseph McIntyre could freely kidnap and sell women.
My brother and I were outgoing and popular, having grown up in Aurora where we knew almost everyone, it wasn’t a surprise really. We did well and our father started training us from a young age. His team remained intact and their friendship just grew in strength over the years.
Timothy and Nadia had a boy named Truman who had inherited his father’s vampire genes and he was eight months younger than us. Jasper’s son, Cameron, was born three months after us and Haley his wife kept him on a tight leash, not that he was complaining, his words actually were “a leash in the bedroom just adds excitement.”
Brandon and Kimberley had settled down and their first son Brady was five months younger than us, then they popped out babies like it was going out of fashion. Mia was born the next year with Gunther following eleven months later and Carey almost exactly nine months after him.
Preston and Jennifer had a boy named Jason a year younger than us and two years later they had Kennedy, their daughter. They had moved out of our house when Jennifer was pregnant with Jason but we saw them regularly and spent most weekends together.
Hannah had given birth to a girl ten months after we were born and named her Emily. She was like our sister and we followed her everywhere much to her annoyance. Rev still had tea parties with her and once or twice she got us to wear tiaras too, not that we would ever admit it now.
Our father kept his relationship with the Elders on good terms and he was very involved with them, especially when it came to investigating other lairs and that’s how the EH Team first started out, I guess you could say they were the first members of the EH Team.
Summer holidays were spent at our lake house and every family had a house on the sixty acre property that had a five acre lake in the middle. We spent a month at the lake house every year. It was an almost three hour drive and we spent our time having bonfires, fishing and hunting.
The houses were log cabins and not as fancy as where we lived, but that made it more fun. The lake was filled with bass, bluegills, crappie, catfish, muskie and walleye and once or twice our hunt resulted in a trophy Whitetail. There were trees that bordered the property all around us and kept the prying eyes of neighbouring land owners away from us.
Every year my parents had to attend the Illinois Dragonkin Ball which consisted of seventeen year old teens eager to meet their bonded halves or to complete the ceremony in front of the Elders. According to my father Bazzoit had spoken to Typhon in the dragon realm and they had altered how the ceremonies worked.
You could complete the bond and the mingling of blood but your bond would only complete permanently and have your mark appear after the Elders completed the ceremony. It seemed that for a while people had completed the bond and then decided to reject each other and quite a few people died who weren’t strong enough to survive it.
When you enter the dragon realm Typhon can see into your soul and he decides if your bond will be strong enough to last or not, if your mark doesn’t take then the bond is broken immediately and both of you are free without the rejection ceremony having to take place.
When things go well for too long it makes me apprehensive, because it can’t be good all the time, right? Right. My life wasn’t bad and yet I felt like something was missing. My brother was happy, so was I, I had my girlfriend and we’d been dating for a year and a half and we had a few months left before we turned seventeen and got our dragons.
Our father spoke to us a lot about our bonded halves and what he and our mother went through with their own relationship. It didn’t really surprise me, our father was a hot head, quick tempered but strangely enough always level headed when it came to making lair decisions.
He was the strongest person I knew, both physically and mentally. He could be funny and he spoke to us like we were one of the guys and we really could tell him everything. He knew some of our secrets that our mother didn’t know and he was wise enough to tell us which ones not to tell her.
I guess this is where my story truly starts. The end of one life and the beginning of a new one started, taking its predestined course when I was sixteen and I thought I had it all. I knew exactly who I wanted to be and where I wanted to end up.
Life’s a bitch and I would soon find out just how much of a bitch she really was until I took charge and looked fate in the eye and basically told her to go screw herself. The decisions I made was mine alone and for that I’ll never apologize.
My name is Ryder Grey and I’m the second son.
I was five years old the first time my father yelled at me and beat my ass so hard that I couldn’t properly sit down the next day. Chase and I had been playing hide and seek with Emily who was four at the time. I was hiding in my father’s office although we were forbidden from entering it. They weren’t home so I wasn’t worried about getting caught.I heard the office door open and I froze where I sat in the little niche between his desk and the wall near the windows. I heard my father on his phone and I knew I was done for unless I could sneak up on him and pretend to be cute or something. He sat down in his chair and I could see the back of his head and his broad shoulders with the phone pressed against his ear. He lifted his head and turned it to the side and then sighed loudly.“One of the fucking kids were in my office again,” he said to whoever he was talking to on the phone so I remained hidden in my spot.He ended his phone call after another few minutes and I concluded that he
I parked behind Chase on the side of Max’s long driveway. His father was the mayor and he knew all about our kind but I doubted that Max knew. I could already hear that the party was underway and we normally arrived about two hours after the parties started.“There you are!” Tia said loudly as she descended the stairs with her crew following behind her.“Sorry we’re late, Chase had an appointment with the mirror,” I said and he nudged me in the ribs.“And right now I have an appointment with Kenna,” he said as he started making his way across the room to where she was talking to Max.“Hi Ryder,” Leana said as she brushed past me with her breasts practically rubbing over my chest.“Hi,” I said feel uncomfortable with her proximity but Tia didn’t even notice and Leana winked at me.I shuddered and let go of Tia’s hand and made my way over to the kitchen to get a drink. In the kitchen I found Chase with Max, Burke and Chester doing shots and they cheered loudly as I walked over to them.
“Beast!” I called upon my own dragon.“Ryder,” he hissed at me.“Merge with me so that from this day forward we may claim each other and together accomplish our predestined fate,” I said loudly. The words had just come to me and I wasn’t even sure from where.“As you command halfling although I won’t be commanded like a lowly house lizard,” he hissed again and I laughed suddenly.“You a house lizard? And here I thought you were magnificent but now I’m not so sure beast,” I said and I could hear him chuckle.“You’ll suit me fine halfling,” he said sounding amused. He came out of the shadows and I held my breath in awe. He circled me and sniffed me tentatively as I folded my arms across my chest. He roared slightly and then merged himself into and onto me.I felt the burning sensation and I swear if I could strip off my own skin I would. I screamed out in pain as the tattoo of his likeness formed on my skin, burning and etching itself deep inside me. I felt like I would lose my mind as
For the rest of the Sunday we celebrated with our family and lazed around in the living room watching movies and napping in between. That night at dinner I felt more like myself and Martha had outdone herself making our favourites to celebrate us getting our dragons.“My boys are all grown up now,” our mother said as she looked at us.“In more ways than one,” Lucas said and Chase started laughing out loud.“What do you mean in more ways than one?” Rylee asked him.“Oh my gosh! Are you two banging girls?” Emily asked loudly and Rev almost choked and Hannah looked at her in horror.“Banging girls? Emily!” Hannah said as Rev just shook his head.“I think I hear my phone ringing in my office,” Lucas said as my mother glared at him.“Not so fast wise guy, is that true, are you two sexually active?” Rylee asked us and I didn’t know where to hide my face.“Mom seriously, do you want to discuss this at the dinner table?” Chase asked her.“That means yes Aunt Rylee,” Emily said as I pretended
Chase had to swallow his pride and he presented a clean bill of health to Melissa two weeks later on her birthday. She looked at the results of the blood test and then smiled as she kissed him. He had humiliated himself but in the end it paid off as Melissa finally accepted him.We had two months of school left and then we would also attend the Illinois Dragonkin Ball to present our bonded halves to the Elders for acceptance of that bond. Our parents would attend as well to witness the forming of the bond and after that night we’d be seen as an official couple within the lair.I had been looking at a promise ring for Tia, a promise that I wanted to make to her on our bonding night, that she’d always be the only one for me. Rylee was helping me with it and she was just as excited as I was. She didn’t know Tia personally but she was happy for me.Lucas didn’t say much since he had messed up his own bonding with our mother a few times but in the end he pulled his head out of his ass, as
There were ten more successful bondings that took place before it was our turn and I extended my arm again for Tia as we waited to be announced.“And now for our final couple, Tia Malone and Ryder Grey,” Elder Cliff said and applause broke out. Chase and Melissa were now seated close together at our table and I swear Chase was clapping the loudest. We made our way onto the stage and Tia beamed as everyone looked at us. I felt slightly nervous and Abeloth was restless to be let out but I couldn’t do it yet. He had to be patient until we eventually got home before he could separate from me.“Do you Tia Malone accept Ryder Grey as your bonded half? Do you vow to remain faithful to him and to your bond? Do you accept the placing of his mark on your neck tonight?” Elder Michael asked her.“I, Tia, accept you Ryder as my bonded half and I vow to remain honest and faithful and I accept your mark on my neck,” Tia said.
I still wasn’t ready to go home but I knew that I had to so I drove behind Chase since he stayed at the Lake house while I showered and got dressed. Abeloth was snorting in my head that we didn’t need a babysitter or an escort home.“Shit is going to hit the fan,” Abeloth said.“I get that feeling too,” I said to him.“Guess we’ll know soon enough,” he mused as we entered lower Aurora and headed to the house.I wasn’t looking forward to this. Lucas had a quick temper and when he was pissed off like I knew he was then you were in for the ride of your life. I had embarrassed him and the lair. As a Sire’s son I was one of the lead examples and the only one to reject my bonded half.“Good luck brother,” Chase said as we climbed out of our cars.“Did he send you to the lake house to look for me?” I asked him.“No, I figured that one out all by m
I spent the next six months in Chicago and underwent rigorous training under Wentworth and his men. The groups were small and once you failed your mind was wiped by a witch and you went back to your old life. I felt at home even though I was the youngest by three years and I quickly became close friends with the other guys I was training with. Most of them had green or blue dragons and one or two had a violet one. There were no yellow dragons in our unit and these were the best of the best. Training started at five am and we stopped at ten pm every day. It was hard and brutal and we even underwent torture training where we were tortured. If I had been a boy when I walked into that building I was definitely a man after those first six months. We were taught how to fight with weapons, without weapons, with your dragon and without your dragon. There were vampires and wolves training with us and we would go head to head with each other. We were taught how to read people and situations, ho
Tank had driven back with the team to get his car at my house while I drove to Aurora and stopped at Lucas’s house. I sat in the driveway for a while and when I looked up Lucas was standing on the patio looking at me. “Hey Dad,” I said as he walked towards me and grabbed me into a hug. “You can let go of it all now,” he said as tears made their way across my cheeks. I had no idea why I was crying, maybe because I could let go of the guilt or maybe because I felt relief, either way I had never cried like this before. We stood like that for a while and he let go of me as I wiped my eyes dry. He led me into the quiet house and into the living room where he poured a drink for both of us. “I’m glad you stopped here first,” he said as he emptied his glass. “I’m not really sure why,” I said to him. “Sometimes we just need to let go, there’s no shame in crying Ry, no shame at all,” he said as I took a sip from my glass. “I’m going to ask Megan to marry me and before you ask no I won’t b
Tank and I drove in my truck and Basil, Elio and Marlo followed behind us as we drove to the Elders lair in Chicago. The last time I was there was when I finally met Abeloth and my thoughts turned to Chase suddenly. “You’re making the right decisions Ryder,” Tank said suddenly and I glanced at him. “I hope so,” I said to him. “Megan’s good people, you two suit each other,” he said to me. “Megan’s great,” I said and he smiled. “Don’t fuck it up,” he said and I laughed. “What about you Tank, when are you settling down?” I asked him. “Probably never, my type isn’t exactly welcome in my world,” he said. “What’s your type?” I asked him. “You really don’t know do you?” he asked. “Know what?” I asked him. “My preferred type is men,” he said and the truck swerved over the other lane as I looked at him. “You’re gay?” I asked him as he laughed. “Yes,” he said as he looked out of the window. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?” I asked him. “I didn’t want you to treat me differently, it’
I stood on the patio and smiled as the two cars pulled into the driveway. I stepped off the last step as Tank picked me and attempted to break my ribs.“Little Ryder!” he yelled excitedly as he put me down and I was instantly tackled to the ground as Elio rushed towards me.“Bastard,” I said as I stood up and Elio laughed at me.“Stop bitching I know you missed us dearly,” he said as Basil walked towards me.“It’s good to see you Basil,” I said as we hugged and I saw Marlo as she climbed out of the car.“Ryder!” she squealed as I caught her and we hugged.“So Marlo tells me there are wedding bells in the near future,” Elio said as he winked at me.“Nothing gets past you Marlo,” I said as she smiled and we all walked inside.Elio and Basil zipped upstairs with their luggage and was back in a flash again as I led them through to the dining room where everyone waited. Johnathan was still with us and he was slowly winning Shelley over.“Sweet little Megan!” Tank yelled as he ran to her an
To say Shelley was freaked out was putting it mildly. She had left the dinner table soon after Johnathan's revelation and I took him up to his room, which coincidentally was right next to hers. He looked somewhat dejected when she left the dining room earlier.“Maybe just give her some time,” I said to him.“I understand that she’s freaking out right now, I have a beast explaining all this to me, I mean here I am a strange man seeking her attention while she’s recovering from an assault,” he said and shook his head.“Let’s see how things go tomorrow at breakfast,” I said and slapped him on the back lightly as I opened his bedroom door for him.“Thank you Ryder,” he said as I nodded and left him.I went upstairs and sank down on the bed fully clothed. It had been a busy day and I got the feeling that I’d be seeing more of Johnathan Thomas. I felt bad for the guy but he was trying to do it right for this new lair he’d taken over.“No shoes on the bed,” Megan said as I felt her sit down.
“Good afternoon Sire Grey,” the man said as Link showed him into my office.“Welcome Sire Thomas,” I said as we shook hands and I led him over to the couch area.“Please call me Johnathan,” he said as we sat down and I offered him a drink.Johnathan didn’t seem to be much older than me and he seemed relaxed in my office. I didn’t get any bad vibes from him although I never judged someone on first appearances, looks can be deceiving and I didn’t trust that easily.“I’ll just cut to the chase here,” he said with a smile as he took the glass I offered him.“That works for me,” I said and leaned back in the seat.“Like you, I’m the second son of a Sire, my father’s lair is based in California, so when I heard that Springfield was looking for a replacement Sire I took the opportunity and met with the Elders which means I’m basically a stand in until I get confirmed,” he said.“So you just swooped in and took over?” I asked him.“Basically. I did my research, I know who you are, what you ca
Shelley and her baby were in good health and I wasn’t sure if Shelley was happy or sad about that. Megan had also found the ring I bought her so my surprise was now ruined and I contemplated just giving her the ring to wear.“Ryder?” Link broke through my thoughts as I sat in the office and my head turned towards his.“Yeah?” I asked.“Have you heard a word I’ve been saying?” he asked me.“Sorry,” I said and gave him my full attention.“Alex Redford isn’t at the house, I sent a few warriors to scope out his residence, even the electricity’s been disconnected,” he said.“Why would he leave?” I asked myself.“Maybe he knows she came here,” Link suggested.“Send his details out to our allies, I want him alive,” I said. The laptop pinged and I looked at yet another email from the Elders when a knock on my door disturbed us. Link stood up to open the office door and a seething Wentworth walked inside.“Morning,” I said as I watched his face.“Leave,” he said to Link as he sat down.“You se
I was sitting up straight in bed flicking through the channels on the television when Megan walked out of the dressing room and the remote fell from my hands as I looked at her.“Is this payback?” I asked her.“Of course not,” she said with a smile telling me she was doing this on purpose.“Uh huh,” I said as I picked the remote up again.“You don’t like it?” she asked me as she walked towards the bed.“Oh I like it,” I said, “it’s just not going to work.”“I have no idea what you’re talking about, it’s just pajamas,” she said and I laughed as I put the pillow on my lap and closed my eyes.“I’m strong, I can do this, I can resist,” I said to myself softly.“Can you really?” she asked as I opened my eyes and she was right in front of me.“You don’t play fair,” I said to her as she grabbed the pillow from my lap and straddled me.“All is fair in love and war,” she whispered.“You’re playing with fire,” I said to her as she started kissing me.She started moving on top of me as she kisse
We had set everything up outside at the back of the house and I saw Lucas and Rylee first as he opened the front door and walked into the house. He carried two coolers and Rylee hugged me so tight that I thought she was going to crack my ribs. Melissa walked straight to Chase and hit him on the back of his head.“Welcome,” I said once Rylee let go of me and Hannah treated me the same. Rev just grunted what I assumed to be a greeting as they placed the coolers next to the empty chairs.“Megan!” Rylee said happily as she walked out of the kitchen with a platter of snacks in her hands.“I’ll take that,” I said as Rylee grabbed Megan in a hug.“I’m so glad you all came!” Megan said excitedly.“Now where’s that future son in law?” Hannah asked as Rev’s eyes flashed yellow.“Go easy on him, Emily’s already giving him shit and he’s not a bad guy,” I said. The front door opened again and Jasper walked in followed closely by Haley, Brandon and Kimberley. Preston and Jennifer were already mingl
Chase, Emily, Jason, Truman and Brady had all seen the video that Cameron took of my lair meeting and they had taken it upon themselves to come and talk some sense into me. They were surprised to see Megan here and I didn’t really have any answers for them except that I was still the Sire of the lair.“Well that was a wasted trip,” Truman said.“Not really, Emily bonded,” Chase said with a wide grin.“Why are you smiling like that, bonding’s a good thing,” Link said as we all started laughing again.“You haven’t met her parents have you?” Truman asked.“No, why?” Link asked as he looked a bit paler.“Oh man can we have a party when Link’s introduced to them?” Jason asked.“Come on guys, it’s not that bad,” I said.“She bonded with him while his hook up was fighting in the kitchen with Megan!” Chase said.“Rev’s going to have a field day with him!” Brady said.“Obviously if I knew I’d meet her today I would never have brought that other thing home,” Link said in his defense.“What do y
