Question… why do authors do this?
Why do they have to make sure the main characters meet memorably?
I mean most novels I've read, it's either they have a one-night stand as strangers and then meet at a later time as employee and boss, making the whole situation awkward or the female lead is in distress and the male lead appears out of nowhere and offers solutions or the male lead has an encounter with the daughter of an enemy and ends up falling for her.
Either way, their first encounter with each other is always memorable!
And either of them has to change their habits! If a main character is initially cold and heartless, he'll change his ways after meeting the other main character. Predictable!
Just look at the way Lucas Gray was staring down at Kate for goddamn sake! Initially, he had angrily turned to lash out at the bumper but his expression changed when he recognized her as the girl he had seen reprimanding an asshole.
Then the recognition turned to surprise and then to the realization that Kate was his employee.
His eyes lingered at Kate's eyes and I could feel the magnifying connection between them. His eyes trailed to her lips and then to her cleavage.
“Oh no!” Kate cried, unaware of his eyes on her exposed cleavage. “I'm terribly sorry Mr Gray, I didn't see you there! It was so careless of me! Please don't fire me!”
“It's okay, Miss.” He replied, “As you said, you had no idea.”
His assistant's eyes popped out of their sockets in shock as he stared at his no-nonsense boss tolerate clumsiness.
“Thank you so much, sir!” Kate said thankfully.
Then the elevator opened and then Kate and I got in. Lucas and his assistant got in with us as well.
His assistant, Alex Thorpe, an equally tall, good-looking man, turned to look at us.
“By any chance, are you both Luna Graves and Kate Mendes in charge of overseeing Liam Pierce's photoshoot?”
Kate and I exchanged glances.
“Yes.” Kate answered eloquently, “As a matter of fact, we're heading there right now, sir.”
“Okay, we'll see you there.” He said and turned away.
As the elevator touched the ground, Lucas and Alex walked away to the parking lot.
“Phew!” Kate exclaimed, wiping the bead of perspirations on her forehead. “You should have seen the way I was trembling. Gosh! He's so intimidating! I nearly peed my pants.”
We walked down the lobby to the exit. Getting a cab became another problem.
Damn this Author!
There was no cab in sight and Kate began to panic. If we ever arrived late, we'll be done for.
But I already knew what would happen next.
Just then, a dark, sleek car pulled up in front of us, and the window rolled down.
Yeah, you guessed right. Sitting in the back seat was none other than Lucas Gray, and behind the driving wheel was his assistant.
“Get in.” He commanded authoritatively, his gaze on Kate.
Kate blushed and averted her eyes to the floor. “Thank you so much, Sir.”
Kate sat at the back behind him, while I sat at the front with the assistant. The drive was awkward and silent.
According to the novel, Kate and Lucas kept glancing at each other out of the corner of the eyes so I decided to check through the rearview mirror.
My heart flew out of my chest and I nearly flinched as Lucas's eyes and mine met through the rearview mirror.
What the fuck? Wasn't he supposed to be glancing at Kate?! Why was he staring at me?
As far as I remember, Lucas Gray never took notice of Luna Graves; he never looked her way, not even once! It was always Kate!
Is the scene changing again?
I became uncomfortable and I couldn't bear to check whether or not he was still staring at me.
We got to the studio location and got out of the car. We took the elevator to the floor.
A lady opened the door, and I assumed she was the photographer's assistant.
“You're here…” She broke off, and her eyes bulged out as she saw Lucas Gray behind us, “M. Mr Gray! What an unexpected surprise! Please come in.”
She ushered us in.
Liam Pierce was already seated in the seated in the stool where the stylists were beautifying him with make-up.
The stylists moved away as soon as they were done, allowing us to have a better view of Liam Pierce.
The first thing I noticed about him was his ripped abs and chest! He was totally shirtless! Damn! This author sure knows how to make his male characters adorable!
They're all hot!
His square jawline, his athletic physique, his perfectly shaped nose… they all made him dreamy!
Damn you Author! Damn you!
According to the novel, he was the first man Kate had fallen for. And at this scene, his eyes meet Kate's eyes, and then he'll say, “Wow! She's pretty!”
By the end of this scene, the photographer suggested Kate join him in the photoshoot.
Standing by the entrance, we happened to catch his eyes as in the scene and then he stared at us.
“Wow! She's pretty!” He said out aloud.
Told you so.
But hold on! The statement wasn't directed to Kate… it was directed… to me?
His eyes lingered on mine and I instantly went red.
The scene is changing again! He should have said that to Kate and she is the one who should have been blushing… not me?!
“Huh?” Kate blurted out in surprise as she digested what just happened and then she turned to look at me.
Just then the photographer came in.
“Okay, seems like you're all set, Liam.” He said. “We'll begin now.”
I paused on hearing the voice. I could recognize that voice anywhere.
I turned to look at him… boom! It was none other than the man who had tried to stop me from falling into the river on the bridge.
He noticed our presence and turned to stare at us.
“Mr Gray?” He said in confusion, “What are you doing…” He broke off as his gaze landed on me, “Crybaby?”
My cheeks instantly went red as he called me Crybaby. Why the hell would he call me that? I'm no crybaby! More importantly, why am I blushing? Why is my heart leaping with joy? Why do I feel like the main character right now? Everyone turned to look at me. “Uh, hi,” I said a little awkwardly, raising my hand and waving a little. “What are you doing here?” He asked, approaching us, and I couldn't help but avert my gaze to the floor. Why am I shy? Why does he make me so pleasurably uncomfortable even though I've only met him once? I don't even know his name! “Hello, Mr Gray.” He greeted, shaking hands with Lucas. “It's such a pleasure to meet you.” “Likewise,” Lucas said stoically, shaking his hand. “I happened to be passing by the area and thought to check how things are going so far.” Liar! “Well, as you can see, everything is going so smoothly.” Then, Liam got off the stool and walked towards us, his bare nipples flashing on my face. “Hello, Mr Gray,” He said politely, off
I'm supposed to be the villain. The sabotager. Not the cupid. But here I am, making sure things go the same way they were in the book just so it could end. Lucas Gray and his assistant, Alex were already gone after confirming things were going smoothly. The photoshoot was over and I was waiting for Kate to get changed… she had changed for the photoshoot… when the photographer walked up to me. “Never thought that I would see you again, Crybaby.” He teased, flashing me that hot smile of his. “It's Luna.” I corrected. “So tell me, was I really right?” He asked and I raised my eyebrows. “About what?” I asked although I knew what he was asking. “Is it true that your groom ditched you on your wedding day?” He asked. I rolled my eyes at him, “Yeah, shit happens.” “Are you okay?” He asked, his face etched with genuine worry. I shrugged. It isn't my life. Adrian Johnson sure wasn't my groom. I'm just filling in for a character who abandoned her role. So why wouldn't I b
I have always imagined my first kiss under the moonlight with my boyfriend if I finally found the perfect guy.Yeah, delusional, I know.I've always dreamt that I won't kiss any man unless he's going to marry me. Yes, my parents raised me that way.Even though I said relationship drains me, I've always wanted to get into one to experience what it feels like to have a ‘boyfriend.’ But I always rejected all men who showed interest in me because of the way I was brought up.But now, I'm getting my first kiss… and the man kissing me is none other than the reckless fictional character! But why can't I stop? Why can't I shove him away to the ground and curse him? Why does his lips taste so... so sweet? Why am I circling my arm around his neck? Is this what I've been missing all along? Is this what every man tastes like? Or is it because he isn't real that he tastes this sweet? Why am I opening my mouth and inviting his tongue in? Why does his hands around my waist make me feel so turned on?
“Hey Luna, where have you been?” Kate asked inquisitively as I stepped in, her countenance plastered with worry. “What happened? Why did you run off like that?” “Oh! Um…” What the hell do I tell her? “It’s nothing. I got a text that a friend of mine got into an accident but it turns out she was okay after all.” Kate regarded me suspiciously, disbelief written all over her face. “What friend? You don't have any friends, Luna, apart from me.” Oh shit, I totally forgot that Luna was a loner. A self-acclaimed loner. “Oh… um … yeah well, this was an old friend.” I said the first thing that came to my mind. “We grew up in the orphanage together and got separated when we came of age. I told you, didn't I?” “You did?” She asked. “Of course.” “Hmm… then I must have forgotten. You don't talk about the orphanage you grew up in a lot.” She said. “Oh, I do.” I replied, “You must have forgotten… like you said.” “I guess so.” She shrugging. I just gaslighted someone! Oh wow! “So, how did
“Why do you look so surprised?” His voice snapped me back to reality… or rather, this novel’s reality.“Oh, nothing.”“You look like you've just seen a ghost.” He uttered.Yes, it's the realization that the plot of the book is changing… because of you.“So, you live here.” He said, trying to initiate a conversation. “I didn't realize. And you work for Grey Enterprises, one of the best firms in town.”“Uh… I guess.”“So what's it like working for a man like Lucas Grey?”In the book, Lucas Grey was portrayed as a cold boss, you know, the typical cold boss you normally read about in office romance novels. He was reserved and was irritated by merely people's presence. Like those office romance novels, he had a bad relationship with his father, who had gotten married to his side chick the next week after his mom's fatal death in a car accident. The poor boy was just five. He grew up hating people. He hated noisiness, clumsiness, and incompetence. In the book, after he took over the company
So the plan is to get rid of Ethan. But how? How do I get rid of him? I've been thinking of it for the past week since our encounter and there is only one solution. I have to get my hands dirty. Which means I have to murder him. But I can't do that. Ew! Even if he's still a fictional character, he still feels… so real. I have a conscience. I was still drowning in my thoughts when I halted at the restaurant. Typical, novels have time jumps like “Two weeks later.” “The next day.” So today is Saturday and the rest of the week is blurred out. You must be wondering, how I spend my time during those “weeks/ days” that are blurred, right? I don't. Yesterday was Tuesday, so Saturday, just like how it happened in the novel. In this scene, I'm on a quest to ruin someone's relationship. Like I said, Luna Graves became a sadistic bitch after the wedding and ended up ruining the life and relationship of everyone around her. I opened the glass door and through. I found him sitting on th
After the cafe meeting, I strolled down the street, my mind reeling with plans on how to get rid of Ethan. My phone popped up a message and I paused to stare at the screen. “Hello, Senora. Been thinking about you. Can we meet up?” The text read. I didn't need a fortune teller to tell me who the texter was. It was Liam Pierce, he's acting out of character again. More importantly, how did he get my number? I tried to ignore the message when another one came in. This time it was from Kate. “Where are you? And when did you leave?” The text read. I left very early so Kate wouldn't see me dressed this way. “I'm on my way back. See you in a minute.” I texted back. I put the phone back into my handbag, and just as I began to walk again, a white vehicle suddenly pulled up in front of me. Two men wearing face masks burst out of the car and dragged me. “Hey, let go of me!” I screeched and screamed and flailing but the men were too strong for me. “Let go of me you assholes!”
The car was silent as we drove down the road.Every once in a while, Christopher turned to me to see how I was holding up.I still can't believe what the hell just happened. My arms and elbows still hurt like hell and I found myself still trembling from the shock of the gruesome incident. What if those men had turned something extremely unthinkable to me? What would have become of me? Will I die? Or return back to my world? I shuddered at the thought.Christopher didn't bother me with more questions after I refused to give him an answer.Somehow I felt safe around him. Was it because he was one of the male leads?“You still aren't gonna talk to me?” He asked out of the blue, turning his gaze towards me, “What happened? Why do you look like this?”I gave him no answer as I stared out of the window as we drove down the road.“I'm taking you to the hospital, and then I'll contact the police.” He uttered, returning his gaze to the road.“No, I don't want to go to the hospital,” I mumbled,
A Few Minutes Later I tried to get my mind off Ethan, but it was just impossible to.The image of him standing in his doorway, looking as hot as fuck was still etched in my memory. And then when he gave me that smirk… that dirty kinky smirk… I liked it.I liked those abs of his, that muscly firm chest, his nipples, his v-line, and the way he stared at me… oh God!I shuddered at my thoughts.Pure thought, Anna, pure thoughts. I've never fantasized about men like this before, not even in my real world. But here I am!He's the reason the plot is changing and I should be pondering on how to get rid of him but I'm here having sexual thoughts about him!I swung my foot off the bed and got to my feet.I'll have to try again. I'll have to face him. I have to get rid of him. I must!I made to step out of the apartment when my phone began to ring.I checked the caller ID, only to see that it was from an unknown number.“Yes, who's this?” I placed the phone on my ear.“Where are you Luna?” A f
The Next Day “Are you sure you're not gonna go?” Kate asked for the umpteenth time, jerking my arm. “No,” I replied firmly, pulling my attention back to the book I was reading. Hilarious. Reading a book inside a book! Who knows? I might end up transmigrating into this one! “Come on. Why would you not want to visit the kids you grew up with? They're your friends.” Kate asked. She's asking me to go to my class reunion. In the novel, Luna attends the class reunion but ends up causing trouble. A very big one. She let her sadism take over her. Luna wasn't only hated by the staff of the orphanage, but her fellow orphans discriminated against her. And as if that weren't enough, she was bullied at school with the nickname “Weirdo.”. She had no friends… no one. She just bore it all in silence. Until after the wedding, she snapped. The girl never had it easy. That's why I empathized with her despite being the villain. Maybe that's why she abandoned this role… because the author was to
And indeed, it was a long night.Throughout the meal, I noticed Lucas stealing glances at Chris and me. He was quiet, as usual, but his mere presence was unsettling. As the old slobs talked business, the three of us kept our mouths shut.I thanked the stars when the meal was finally over.I got to my feet, “I'll take my leave, Mr and Mrs Barnes. Everyone, thanks for the meal.”“You're not staying for dessert?” Mrs Barnes queried, looking up at me.“No, I'm afraid not.” I declined politely.“Such a shame.” She lamented, “I was hoping we could get to spend some time together.”“Maybe she'll come over when she gets the time,” Chris added, giving me a sly smile.“Yes, come over next time.”“It was really nice meeting you,” I said, feeling uncomfortable with the way they were all staring at me, including Lucas. “I will.”“Let me take you home.” Chris got to his feet and put his hand on my waist. I saw Lucas's jaw tighten a bit, but I might have been mistaken.Together, Chris and I left the
Chris and I stepped out of the room and headed down the majestic stairs, with Clyde trailing behind us.I felt my heartbeat palpitate as we stepped into the grand hall. When Chris said guests, I didn't expect that there would be dozens of them! No one needed to tell me that they were all business partners of the Barnes family. Rich annoying slobs! All eyes were pointed at me from every corner of the magnificent dining room, piercing into my fragile soul and I felt self-conscious and hurriedly averted my gaze to the floor.“Hi everyone.” Chris greeted “Mom, Dad, this is my girlfriend, the one I've been telling you about, Luna.”“Hello.” I managed to say but my voice didn't sound like mine. “It's an honor to be amidst all of you.”“Hello, Luna.” All of them chorused.“Please, take a seat, dear.” A woman whom I recognized from the description of the novel as Mrs Barnes urged me.“Thank you.”Chris and I moved to the table and took our seats.“Aw, she's so pretty.” One of them complimente
“Anna, where the hell have you been?” My parents exclaimed coming in for a hug, “We were worried sick!”I hugged them tightly, tears dripping from my eyes. Finally!I'm home!I knew it! I knew this was all some silly dream!“Anna!”I disentangled from the hug and turned to see my two little siblings standing at the door with their eyes full of tears.“Anna” They cried and ran to hug me.I embraced them.“We were so worried.” Josh, my only brother mumbled, his voice breaking. “We thought that something might have happened to you.”“How could you just go missing?” Barbie, my youngest sister cried out. “We were so worried!”“I'm finally home now.” I patted their back and ruffled their hair. “I'm not going anywhere.”God, I missed them so much!“We made your favorite dish.” My mom said, a smile of happiness and relief tugging at the side of her lips. “Come.”“Come, let's go.”My two siblings began to pull me towards the dining room.“Hey, wake up.” The voice halted me in my tracks and I
