CHAPTER FORTY: The Lie and the Demand

MARIUS’ POV:

Carter Whitlock. He fills me with dread and fury.

He was invited by the police for an interrogation, but is now sent free again. They said that there’s not enough evidence to tie him up with my accident. With his freedom comes the danger he poses—not just to me, but to Hazel as well.

I shouldn't care anymore, but the idea of Carter getting anywhere near Hazel is unbearable. I have to warn her, probably tell her to hire some bodyguards.

I grab my coat and hurry to my car. The drive from the capital to Hazel’s place is a blur. The hours feel endless, but finally, I reach her street.

As I pull up, a peculiar sight catches my eye—Hazel, loading boxes into the luggage rack of a motorcycle. The rider nods to her and drives off, leaving her standing amidst a few more boxes on the porch.

Hazel notices me and the exhaustion in her eyes is replaced with excitement.

“Marius, you came again?” she says as I approach.

I glance at the remaining boxes. “What are those?”
