“Where is Gugu?” I asked Grip but he just shrugged. I glared at him making him sigh.
“I saw her run after Bruce,” he answered.
A resounding curse escaped my mouth. Demons are feed not only through human souls but also by other spirits whether a ghost or evil ones.
“Of all creatures, it’s you who’s knowledgeable enough that she might end up eaten by a demon. You shouldn’t have let her leave!” I jabbered. “If something bad happens to her I’m going to make you the main ingredient of my steamed dumpling you annoying cat!” I stomped my foot and walked out.
“Go ahead. I’m fine with it. At least you’ll get to eat someone delicious like me.”
I looked back and threw him my death glare. I saw him smirking while biting his lower lip. How can he do both and still look cool? Damn it!
We looked all over the university but I couldn’t find her. I’m getting nervous and at the same time, irritated. Grip didn’t help, he just annoyingly followed me the entire time.
“Where could she be?” I ruffled my hair in annoyance.
“She’s far from here. Not in the school grounds but inside the university,” he uttered out of nowhere.
“What does that even mean?” I grimaced.
He put his hand on his chin and looked up as if he was thinking. “Somewhere you spend most of the time.”
“Ow shoot! Dorm!” I drifted fast right away. He also ran matching my speed but backwards with his arms crossed on his chest as if it was a piece of cake. Perks of being a reaper. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” I gritted my teeth.
“You didn’t ask.” He shrugged.
I stopped and run after my breath. He stopped too but in front of me. I averted my gaze at him.
“I did ask.” I narrowed my eyes and eyed him sharply.
“Cute.” He laughed softly and pinched my cheek.
I smacked his hand away but he swiftly grabbed my wrist and pulled me closer. My face landed on his chest. I looked up and I gulped seeing his face this close. His scent is intoxicatingly soothing in my nose. I inclined my back to distance myself but he snaked his arm around my waist. I put my hands on his chest and his eyes with mine.
“What are you doing?” I did my best not to stutter but I failed, a bit. I could feel the blood rushing upward, to my cheeks.
“Don’t look down,” he warned.
My brows creased and due to curiosity, I did the opposite of what he said.
“What the!” I jumped and flung my arms around his neck. He immediately caught me. His hand was on my back and the other one on the back of my knees.
We were floating in the air. I was fascinated by the view up here. The trees looked so tiny and the students on the field looked like ants.
The wind blew my long hair making it sway behind us. It was so refreshing up here.
“Don’t they see us?” I asked worriedly.
“You always worry even on the slightest thing. They can’t see us. You can only break my invisibility spell when you’re on sealer mode,” he answered looking ahead.
“Sealer mode?” Confusion was definitely written on my face.
“When your mark felt like burning, it’s a sign that you’re on sealer mode and it will be followed by your eyes changing in color,” he explained that made it more vague on my part. “Your eyes change, Serra. Your pupils and iris turn white while your scleras turn black. You are not just a medius, Serra. You’re a sealer. Your purpose is to seal darkness and get rid of demons,” he added.
“Why me?” I blurted.
“I wish I know but one thing is for sure, everything has its reason.” He gave me a small smile, not a smirk or a teasing smile but a genuine one.
Of all people here on the island of VeM, why me? I was born with nothing, not even a mother. I thought it would be enough for the heavens to spare me from challenges because living alone was already too much to handle.
Was I bad in my previous life? I was not certain whether this oh so-called ability is a blessing or a curse.
“Now you’re bothered.” He shook his head. “Hold tight.” He grinned.
I don’t like his grin. I immediately tightened my cling on his neck. I closed my eyes as we drifted upwards at the speed of light.
“Are you going to kill me?” I winced hitting his chest and flicked my legs. He inched a little and dropped me because of what I did.
He clicked his tongue and tugged me. We floated straight ahead. I glanced in front and I clutched his shirt as I felt my stomach rumbled. I closed my eyes before we hit the building before us. It’s been a while but I felt nothing.
“Sweet...” a familiar voice uttered.
I opened my eyes and saw Gugu wearing her dreamy face. I wandered my sight and we’re inside my room already. I pushed Grip and took steps backward.
“I almost had a heart attack!” I exclaimed at him.
He just crossed his arms on his chest, agian, and took a good look of the place. My lips twisted as he ignored me. I faced Gugu and started questioning her non-stop.
“I followed Bruce but I lost him on this floor. My attention was diverted because of the lady in a red dress walking on the corridor,” she explained. She looked so bothered. “She was wearing crimson-red heels that matched her dress and her blood-red lips. I wasn’t able to see her face because she was wearing a huge cocktail hat with a net-like veil,” she added.
My heart beats fast after hearing her confession.
“You perfectly described the woman in my vision!” I brought my hands to my lips.
“I have to go somewhere,” Grip meddled catching our attention. “Be careful you two, I don’t like this place,” he added and the moment I blinked he vanished.
“His words scared me!” Gugu floated near me as her eyes remained restless.
A reaper just said that he didn’t like this place and a ghost looked frightened. What more for a human? Now I don’t know how I can get a good night sleep. I went to the kitchen and checked the cabinets. I saw some cup noodles so I grabbed two and looked for a heater.
“Calm down, Gugu,” I fussed. I got dizzy watching her float back and forth.
She nodded and stood beside me. We waited for the water to boil before pouring it into our noodles. I handed the cup to her and we started eating. I opened random topics to divert our attention. After that, we went to bed but I couldn’t sleep. The faint creaks behind the walls is haunting me. All I could do was stare at the ceiling and let my thoughts drown me.
If Gugu saw that lady in red here it only means that the lady is either a student staying in this dorm or a teacher or school staff checking on the students. I wish that Amara and her baby were safe. I need to convince Bruce next thing in the morning.
I heard a crashing sound that made me open my eyes hastily. I didn’t know when I fell asleep. I jumped out of my bed when I remembered my vision about shattered glass. I hurried to the kitchen where the sound came from. I saw a girl standing in front of a broken cup. The rich aroma of black coffee tickled my nostril as it scattered all over the kitchen floor.
“Did I wake you?” She scratched her neck, shy.
“I’m glad you did. I missed my alarm,” I reasoned.
“By the way, I’m your roommate. We also met last week.” She squatted on the floor to pick up the broken cup.
Now I know why my room is extravagant. The governor’s daughter is my roommate!
“Let me,” I interfered. “You might hurt yourself,” I added.
She stood up and stepped away. She thanked me and went out of the kitchen. I looked for gloves in the cabinet and wore one. I picked up the shards and threw them in the trash bin together with the wet gloves I was wearing. I looked for a cloth to clean the splattered coffee. I was about to wipe it but I stopped when I realized something. I touched the coffee but it was cold.
Who would drink a cold coffee early in the morning? Weird.
“Are you done?” She peeked from the door.
“Almost,” I replied and immediately wiped the coffee off.
I washed the cloth and hanged it. I get ready for my classes. I could see Gugu eyeing Amanda who couldn’t see her. She was also following her wherever corner of the room she goes. I shook my head at Gugu signaling her to stop before getting inside the bathroom.
The moment I went out I only saw Gugu. Instead of going to the cafeteria, I’ll check on Amara first. Maybe I’ll tell Bruce about his girlfriend’s condition. I’m sure that we’ll board the elevator at the same time as usual.
“Did you hear something last night?” Gugu asked out of a sudden. I just shook my head.
We waited at the front of the elevator for half an hour but no Bruce showed up. Maybe he was avoiding me. I decided to visit Amara at the university’s infirmary.
“The moment she woke up she ran away,” the clinic nurse stated. “She stayed here overnight because she was unconscious due to over fatigue,” she added.
“Did she bleed?” I asked out of curiosity and concern.
“It’s natural to bleed if you’re on your period,” she responded before leaving me to attend to the needs of another student that just came.
I thanked her and went to the cafeteria. I was not paying attention to anything not even in our class. I was submerged in the confusion regarding Bruce and Amara. I thought she was pregnant. During my vacant, I searched for Bruce but he was nowhere to be found. I asked his professors but according to them, he didn’t attend any of their classes.
I was walking in the hallway towards Amara’s class when something annoying rang in my ears. I covered my ears but it won’t stop. I looked around and saw teachers went out of their classrooms. The sound was like the sound the clock makes every time it struck at noon or midnight. I checked the time on my phone but it was three o’clock in the afternoon.
“Is the clock tower malfunctioning?” I heard one of the teachers said.
So it wasn’t just me. Students started to panic due to the endless ringing. Some of the teachers called the technician to check the clock since they couldn’t continue with their classes.
When the ringing stopped it was followed by a high pitch shriek of a female student near the administration building. Rumors spread fast like a wildfire until they reached my ears.
“A body fell from the clock tower.”

BRUCEI stared at my trembling hands and then at Amara. She looked pale and weak. I want to caress and embrace her. I promised to protect her but I couldn’t even protect her from me.“What have you done, Bruce?” a voice echoed in my head and it was followed by a peal of wicked laughter.I held my head with both hands pulling my hair wishing that the laughter would cease. In my turmoil state of mind, I walked away.“Bruce...” she called, soft and weak. Her voice receded the voice in my head. I glanced at her with eyes full of love. After seconds of silence, she replied, “I love you too.”I gave her my last sweet smile. The smile I refused to give to other ladies, only her. She smiled back with a slow nod. We’ve been through a lot that we could understand each other just by looking.I stormed out of the library not just because I was afraid of Serra’s aura but also because I might hurt Amara more and our baby.I’ve always wanted to have my own family and I want Amara to be my kids’ mothe
I groaned feeling the pain on the side of my head. I opened my eyes and I was welcomed by blinding lights. “Blinding lights...” Serra’s voice rang in my ears again. I blinked twice to adjust my sight. I turned around and I could see nothing but darkness. The only source of light was the swaying lamp above my head. The cold breeze kissed my skin waking the fine hairs on my entire body. I was dying to touch the side of my head because of the raging pain the impact left. My skin in that part tightened because of a dried foreign substance. I tried to move but my hands were tied behind me. A rope was looped around my bare chest and shoulders making me intact with the wooden chair and my feet were also tied at the chair’s feet. I examined my body and I found myself naked. I was agitated by the reiterating click-clack of a shoe in the room. I don’t know where to focus my sight not until a lady revealed herself in front of me from the dark part of the room. She was wearing an all-crimson-
My face was saddened but I didn’t regret what I did even if it was an accident. “That’s the nastiest thing I’ve heard in my entire life.” She wiped her tears and laughed. “Love? What is love? There are anger, obsession, envy but love? There is no such thing as love.” She emphasized every word with contempt. She picked up her red thong and went around my back. She pressed it on my wound to stop my gushing blood. How ironic! “The truth is I want to know why girls were so crazy about him despite being sexually harassed they still wanted him. Now that I tasted it I thought that I’ll finally put an end to my thirst but I’m very disappointed.” She gently caressed my shoulder and blew warm air in my ears. “Watching other’s suffer is still the best entertainment and pleasure giver.” She gently nibbled my ear and licked it. “Besides it should be me, Bruce. I should be the one to kill Mark.” She dug her nails on my shoulder. “You’re insane– arghhh!” I cried when she dug her fingers in my wou
SERRAI turned around but I couldn’t see a thing. I strode forward without any idea where my feet would take me. A rattling sound echoed every time I stepped. Darkness was everywhere but I could see my way as if I lived in the dark.as if I belong here.“H-Help...” a raspy voice whispered in my ear.I averted my attention at the side but no one’s there. I walked forward endlessly. My mind was blank but my feet knew where to go.“H-Help...” I heard the same voice however it wasn’t just in my ear.I don’t know where to settle my head. The sound bounced from one place to another. The owner of the voice sounded like he was everywhere. I tried to follow the voice but it lead me to nowhere. My heart beat fast out of excitement. I should be scared yet I felt thrilled.A light from afar suddenly surfaced. I leaped towards the light and revealed myself. I froze seeing a feeble and naked man tied to the chair.“H-Help...” he uttered once more.Bruce!I called but he didn’t seem to hear me. I yell
This time, it didn’t take long when the investigation team arrived which was contrary to the day Bruce fell from the clock tower. It took them almost an hour before reaching the crime scene given the fact that the station was only a few blocks away from the university. They were slouching for some reason or maybe their service depended on the background of the person who called them. It was Amanda Silverio after all, perks of being the governor’s daughter. “Take Amara somewhere comfortable. I’ll be the one to give a statement,” Amanda suggested. I just nodded and helped Amara out guiding her by the hand. I was struggling thinking of a place where I could take her. Scratch the idea of taking her to our room since it was just next to Bruce’s room. I nibbled the bottom of my lip. “Let’s just head to my room,” she said in between her sobs. I just nodded and lead the way towards the dorm’s elevator. I glanced at her when the elevator’s door closed. “Fifth floor.” She tightened her gri
Her words made my heart throbbed. “About what?” “I am carrying a being in my womb for two months now. I hid it from Bruce and everyone else even the school nurse by faking my period that almost lead to miscarriage.” She gently brushed her tummy with love. “I told him once and the truth almost killed me. I reasoned out that it was a prank and it brought him back to his senses but he couldn’t remember what he did to me. Sometimes I would wake up with a pain in my belly and found Bruce squeezing it while blurting foreign languages. He was possessed but I don’t know which devil not until I heard its voice at the library. It was the only time I was certain that it was Mark, my ex-boyfriend.” Her voice cracked. I sighed in relief. Thank goodness my initial thought was wrong. Her choice of words especially the confess one made me nervous. “Why are you telling me all of these?” I questioned. “I need your help to find Bruce’s soul and I confessed to gain your trust.” Her sincere eyes met mi
“Why did you do that?” I didn’t look at him and just focused on bandaging his wrist. I lifted my gaze when he didn’t respond. I stared at his sleeping face for a moment before finishing the bandage. He was leaning his head on the top of his extended arm over the table. I stretched my arm above the table and leaned my head on the top of it mirroring his position. I gave his face a good glimpse. He looked vulnerable, soft, and warm which was the opposite of his strong, intimidating, and cold usual self. We were in the university’s garden at the moment. We went to the clinic to borrow the first aid kit before heading here. The nurse let me borrow the kit since we were quite close. I was her frequent customer because of some bruises and scratches I got from some of my bullies. I still have a few despite being feared. My phone rang so I swiftly answered it because it might wake Grip. “Have you found her?” I asked in the softest voice I have. “No, but one of the guards said that they s
“How could we find Bruce?” I racked my head the entire time but I haven’t thought of a place where he possibly gone to. The sun already set and a cold breeze embraced my skin. We are at the end of August, few days left and it would be ber months. As time passed by the wind was getting colder and colder an indication that December was fast approaching. I hugged myself to lessen the chills I was feeling. “We could track him down by identifying his grudge or his desire. Humans whose lives were forcefully taken away from them were most likely to have grudges while people who were not ready to die or have regrets develop desires. Grudges and desires are the reasons why souls refuse to leave the world of the living. Resolving of grudges or desires was the only way for them to cross the light.” He sipped on his coffee that appeared earlier from nowhere. “Bruce was murdered, for sure he has an intense grudge,” Gugu stated. I snapped my fingers. “Maybe he’s in the clock tower!” Grip shook
SERRA “Dad,” I called him.It has been days yet he was still sad and listless.“What can do for yoy, sweetheart?” He forced a smile but the sadness in his eyes was visible.“I-I want to ask you about someone.” I lowered my head.“Come here.” He tapped the space beside him. I obliged and sat next to him. “About who?” he asked.“About my mom,” I stuttered.Hearing the last word he was grief-stricken. I felt bad asking about it.“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t feel like it, dad,” I sincerely said.He shook his. “It’s about time.” He smiled genuinely. “What do you want to know about her?”“What does she look like?” I asked even though I already knew.He moved away and pulled something out of the drawer of his bedside table. He gave me a round object. It was metal-like and silver in color with gold Vines and red roses all over.“Open it,” he told me after handing it over.I ran my thumb tracing the vine and pulled the top part upward. I saw myself, my reflection.“You’re a carbon
The moment the water swallowed me I held my breath. There’s no way I’m letting the cold enter me. I looked up but it’s all water above me. My hair floats over my head like seaweeds. In the rashness of the moment, I began flinging my arms out.I expect to come back out and I did. I gasped for air before sinking again. I kicked my legs and flapped my arms and I was back to the surface again. But each chance to breathe became further apart. Each breath was less than the last.I tried once more. The more I struggle the more disoriented I became. I felt like I’m trashing inside an invisible prison. My first instinct was to get some air but there should be something else. I couldn’t fight for air forever. I need to find a way out.I pushed with my legs and arms and when I was able to bob my head out of the water, I breath as deep as I could. The water pulled me again. I looked around and saw a wall. The fear I felt was overlain by hope. I flicked my feet and tried to reach the walk. It was
“No... That couldn’t be.” Kate staggered backward. “It should be there. I should be there,” she repeatedly uttered pulling her hair.I run towards her. “Don’t worry, Kate. We are going to find Lulu’s body.” I assured her and patted her shoulder. She yanked her shoulder away from my grasp and took a few steps backwards. She kept on pulling her hair and her eyes were restless. She didn’t know where to focus them.“W-What if that thing took it? W-What if that thing swallowed it?” Her breathing turned shallow and fast. She punched her head with boths hands wandering with little steps. She’s mentally unstable. I walked near her and caught her hands stopping her from hitting herself.“Stop it, Kate. You’re hurting yourself,” I told her.She already suffered enough. I couldn’t bear watching her like this.“That thing swallowed Lulu whole!” she squealed oogling her eyes at me.I grabbed her cheeks and made her look at me. “What thing, Kate? What thing?”After a moment of touching her face m
“I am sorry for ignoring you, guys.” Kate lowered her head. “I was just scared of Lulu. I’ve known her for years and I didn’t know she was capable of any of that. I know she won’t hurt any of you though. She was just after me.” Her voice cracked. I moved closer to her and rubbed her back. Comforting her is the only thing I could do for her right now. “Nothing of that is your fault, Kate. Monsters are made. Envy made Lulu into one.” I pulled her making her lean into me as she sobs. “But she is still the Lulu that we know. She’s a beautiful flower,” I added. She lifted her eyes to meet mine. “Will she become a flower forever? Are we going to meet her, the real her?” “No.” I shook my head. “In the next life I could be an animal or a plant or I could be in your body and you could be in mine. It depends on the decisions we make at this lifetime. That doesn’t mean we aren’t real. The real us is not our flesh but our soul.” I wiped her tears away. She nodded and smile. She leaned against
I dropped my phone after hearing what she said. I hastely went back to the elevator and ran again toward the gym. It was passed two in the afternoon already. “Serra, here!” Mandy waved her hand at me. I ran in thier direction. I gasped for air. “Where is Amanda?” “Amara called and they were together at the moment. What’s going on?” She looked both worried and confused. I looked at Lulu’s direction and Mandy already got what I meant. “Lulu!” I approached her. She turned around and faced me. She was wearing an ice-cold expression, far from the Lulu that I knew. Something was really not right here. I saw Kate died but her name wasn’t carved at the black scroll. I shook the doubt in my mind and focused to the present. “Lulu, grab my hand and get out of the body.” I lend my hand to her but just like before she just stared down my hand. “Yes, Lulu. Do it. Trust her,” Mandy encouraged. She looked at me and smiled. I was relieved to see her smile but my heart started to race pushing m
“Are you sure about that?” Grip asked. “Yes, bring me back to the mansion. I chose to front my fear.” I firmly said. He nodded and smiled. He was proud. He grabbed my waist and pulled me nigh him. Lulu’s and Dorothy’s name was already written on the scroll of death and today was the thirteenth day from Xyrus’ supposed to be death. I wanted to save them, to do that I need to watch dad’s every move. I was not certain if my plan would work but I have to try at least. “Grip, something’s off–” I turned around but he wasn’t here anymore. “Grip?” I sighed and just walked the long way toward the mansion. He was vanishing from my sight very often this days. It was a sign that he would leave and cross to the other side very soon. As I walk the garden I came across with bronze maids. They would avoid taking the same way as I do. They would even avoid staring in my eyes. I stared at the huge closed door before me. Just by thinking of going inside gave me goosebumps. I took a deep breath. I p
Fear enveloped me when I arrived at the mansion. Dead bodies of maids were lying everywhere in the front yard. The metallic scent of blood was giving me a feeling of gagging. I looked around hoping that I could find someone breathing but I was too late. Some were beheaded, some were stabbed multiple times, and chopped like a piece of meat. “Ahh!” I snapped my head in the mansion’s direction. I knew that scream and it was coming from the mansion. I ran and ran. Ran as fast as I could. I pushed the mansion’s door wide open. In front of me was dad wearing his usual coldness. In front of him stood Amanda. She was dressed like the lady in red. I saw no emotion in her eyes. Dad placed his hand on her shoulder and whispered to her, “say hi to your sister.” Amanda slowly raised her hand and waved at me like a puppet. “Hi...” Dad’s lips twitched. He didn’t like what Amanda did. His fingers turned black and grew long. Digging its sharpness in her shoulder. “Do it with a smile.” He gritted h
“Why did we stop?” I poked my head out of my carriage’s window. “A man dropped in the middle of the road, madame,” the coachman responded. I rose from my seat but a man stopped me by grabbing my arm. His face was a bit blurry but the longer I stare the much clearer his face become. My brows furrowed to see Xyrus who was wearing a weird looking clothes from the past. The breeches were long and fairly full in cut, reaching just below the knee. The doublet has a high waist at the sides and back, extending to a point in front. A deliberate opening of the seam on each sleeve allows the fine linen shirt underneath to be seen. He completed his attire with a cape that spans almost a full circle. I looked at myself. I was wearing a deep brown gown with a low rounded neckline and a small ruff paired with a winged collar. The tight sleeves have pronounced shoulder wings and deep lace cuffs. It has a matching petticoat pinned into flounces on a drum or cartwheel farthingale. I looked at him an
“D-Dad?” I whispered. He did not answer. I brought my phone out and opened my flashlight. I directed the light to his face. “Grip? What are you doing here?” He lended me his hand and pulled me up on my feet. “I should be the one asking you that. What are you doing here in the middle of the night? Are you seriously sneaking?” He made me turn my back at him and wiped the dust off my pajamas. “Yes, I am. So will you lower your voice now?” I scolded him in a whispering manner. “Do you think you won’t get caught? Maybe you passed through the elderlies but how about that?” He grabbed my hand and directed my phone’s light to the ceiling. I felt like my effort went to nothing to see the CCTV camera blinking red taunting me. I face-palmed. “You are lucky because you have a handsome boyfriend to the rescue.” He winked at me. “What did you do?” I narrowed my eyes at him. “Don’t looked at me like that. I just saved you from trouble. I moved the camera to somewhere that wouldn’t caught you.”
