LEXI'S POV
(8 years later)
“Happy birthday, Lexi!”
I just smiled when I saw Linda holding a small cake. She’s the nanny who raised me. She’s been doing this every year since I moved to my father’s house. She has been like a mother to me—taking care of me and the only one who showed me that I was accepted in this house.
“Thank you, Linda,” I said happily.
Aside from the cake, there was also breakfast on the side table next to me. Today was my 26th birthday, and I knew that it would feel like any other ordinary day. Only Linda was making me feel like this day was special.
“What are your plans for today?” she asked.
I gave a small smile. “Linda, I was going to tell you something, but please don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“Of course! When have I ever broken your trust?” she said jokingly.
I quickly nodded. I could only confide in Linda. She’s the only one I can trust with my secrets, and none of them have ever reached Papa or Aunt Minda. That’s why I trust her so much.
“I’m planning to confess to James today,” I said quietly.
James Smith has been my friend since college, and he started courting me a year ago. At first, I only saw him as a friend, but eventually, I fell for him too. After my first heartbreak, it was only now that my heart learned how to love again.
“Well, that’s great. I thought you were just leading him on,” Linda said happily.
I laughed. She always told me I deserved to follow my heart.
“I feel like now is the right time to tell him how I truly feel.”
Our conversation was interrupted when my phone alarm went off. Linda quickly grabbed my towel and handed it to me.
“Okay, we’ll talk more later. You might be late for work. Go shower now. Wait, what about your breakfast?” she asked in a flustered tone.
“Linda, just like before, I’ll take it with me,” I said, smiling.
“Oh, right. Okay, I’ll prepare it, and you go shower. Go on, Hija.”
I stood up and walked over to Linda to give her a hug. She was momentarily stunned by my gesture.
“Thank you so much, Linda.”
After my hug, I quickly entered the bathroom. I didn’t want her to see the tears that had escaped my eyes. I just stared at myself in the mirror. This is always the scenario on my birthday. Linda wakes me up to give me the cake she bought herself, and after that, I immediately retreated to the bathroom to hide my tears.
Every year, I cry on my birthday. I have a family—the Castillon family—but I’ve never truly felt like I belong to them. This is what it feels like to be the product of a mistake. I’m Papa’s child with another woman, and my sister Shiela is almost the same age as me.
I was very young when my mother died, and since then, Papa took me in. He took me here to his house and introduced me to his wife, Aunt Minda, and their daughter Shiela. Shiela is older than I. She and her mother hated me because I was an illegitimate child, but Papa insisted on taking care of me because I had lost my mother. Aunt Minda had no choice but to accept Papa’s decision, but their treatment of me was never good.
Even though Papa took me in, I never felt his presence while I was growing up. He was always busy with his company, trying to grow it. So, it was only Aunt Minda and Shiela who I was often with in this house. Luckily, Linda was kind to me, so at least I managed to grow up here.
That’s why, every year on my birthday, I’m always alone. Papa might not even know it’s my birthday. And as for Aunt Minda and Shiela, they don’t care about me. I really wanted to leave this house, but I couldn’t leave Papa. Even though they’ve treated me this way, I’m still thankful to him for standing by me.
After crying for a few minutes, I decided to shower. Even though it was my birthday, I still chose to go to work. I prefer to spend my day at the office than sulking here at home.
I work for a well-known financial company. I chose to work elsewhere instead of Papa’s company. He’s been convincing me to work for him for a long time, but I’ve always refused. Life at home is complicated enough, and I don’t want my workplace to be the same. Shiela and Aunt Minda are also at Papa’s company, so it’s certain to be a nightmare if I worked there.
After finishing my shower and being satisfied with how I looked, I decided to head out of my room. From upstairs, I could already hear laughter downstairs. I was sure Aunt Minda was enjoying breakfast. My heart skipped a beat when I heard Papa’s voice. He was still there, so I quickly went downstairs and headed for the dining room. As soon as I entered, the three of them all looked at me at once.
“You’re here, Lexi. Come join us,” Papa said seriously.
I can’t miss the way Shiela scowled at me and how Aunt Minda rolled her eyes. I was already used to their treatment, but I wasn’t going to waste an opportunity to eat with Papa. So, without hesitation, I sat down to join them.
“By the way, Lexi, we have a family dinner tonight at Queen’s Resto,” Papa added.
“Ricky, maybe Lexi is busy with work,” Aunt Minda interjected.
As usual, whenever there’s a family gathering, it’s almost as if Aunt Minda is directly telling me not to join because I’m just an illegitimate child. Luckily, I actually had plans for tonight. I was going to confess to James and tomorrow, I’ll introduce him to Papa. Papa knows him as my friend, but tomorrow, I’ll introduce him as my boyfriend.
“If you worked at our company, there wouldn’t be any problem with your schedule,” Papa said.
As usual, Papa brought up his wish for me to join his company. I don’t know why he insists on it, even though it’s obvious that his wife doesn’t like me. I guess when someone is too busy with work, they become blind to other things. I have no ill feelings towards Papa. Despite everything, he still wants me to be part of the company he worked hard to build.
“What’s going on tonight?” I changed the subject.
“It’s just a simple gathering with the owner of TAC Group of Companies. Finally, they agreed to accept my invitation,” Papa said, smiling.
TAC Group of Companies is well-known because it’s one of the most successful family corporations in the country. Moreover, their family is so exclusive that very few people know them. I don't even know who’s behind that company.
“Aren’t they strict about these things, Papa?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“Yes, but for some unknown reason, they accepted my invitation. It’s a great opportunity for our company,” Papa said happily.
“And, Ricky, honey, I heard their son is coming too. Shiela’s so excited,” Aunt Minda added.
I looked at Shiela, whose smile was wide, almost as if she was swooning.
“You know him?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“Of course. I have connections, unlike you,” Shiela answered, smiling, before looking at Papa. “Papa, maybe you can help me with their son. You know, maybe he’s the one meant for me.”
Papa shook his head gently. “Love isn’t like that, Hija.”
“Hon, isn’t that a great opportunity? I mean, if they fall in love, it would be great for our company’s image,” Aunt Minda said.
Papa ignored his wife and daughter and instead looked at me.
“Will you be joining us, Lexi?”
I smiled uncertainly. “I have plans, Papa.”
Papa nodded and returned his attention to the food. I smiled bitterly and tried not to cry in front of them. Papa didn’t remember that it was my birthday today, or maybe he didn’t even know it was my special day.
“Excuse me. I’ll go ahead. I might be late,” was all I said.
“Aren’t you going to finish your meal?” Aunt Minda asked, sounding incredulous.
I smiled faintly. I knew she would rather I left, so I wouldn’t embarrass her in front of Papa.
“How rude,” Shiela muttered, making sure Papa heard.
“Lexi, we rarely get to eat together. Just let us finish before you leave,” Papa said authoritatively.
I had no choice but to stay. When Papa speaks, I can’t refuse. I endured their cheerful conversation while sitting with no appetite to eat.
It was always like this. I wonder how long it will continue?
LEXI' POVIt’s almost five o’clock. I’ve been feeling restless because, in just a little while, I will see James. I can’t explain how I feel. Maybe it’s because after eight years, here I am, ready to love again.“You’re nervous, Lexi.”I turned to Savina, who was holding a paper bag. She smiled and handed it to me, which I quickly accepted.“Happy birthday!” she cheerfully greeted me.Savina is my best friend from high school, and it seems like wherever I go, she’s always there too. We attended the same college, and, of course, we now work at the same company. The only difference is our department, so her office is a bit far from mine. The Marketing Department is on the 3rd floor, while the Financial Department is on the 6th floor. Since it was almost five o’clock, Savina came to visit me on my floor.“So, have you received flowers?” Savina asked curiously.I gave a faint smile. “No. Maybe whoever it is stopped sending them,” I replied.Every year on my birthday, someone sends me flow
LEXI'S POVIt was only six in the evening when I arrived at the restaurant. I made sure to come early. Linda was really worried about me, but I reassured her that I was fine. I still hadn’t told Savina what I had found out because I knew she would rush to confront James. I wanted to talk to James first. I wanted us to clear things up.I still made an effort to prepare for this dinner. I wore a peach-colored dress that was above the knee. I let my long hair down and applied a bit of makeup. I had planned to wear contact lenses, so I wouldn’t look like a nerd, but I was sure I would cry later. So I opted for my thick glasses instead. I’m still the nerd that everyone bullied back in high school. I guess I was just a fool to believe that James truly loved me.My thoughts were interrupted when my phone suddenly rang. It was Papa calling, so I quickly answered.“Hija, where are you?” he asked.“I’m just handling something, Papa,” I replied.“If you can make it to our dinner, please come. I’
Shiela's POV"Shiela, why don't you answer the call? It might be important."I glanced at Papa when he spoke. My phone had been vibrating for a while, but I had been trying to ignore it. I didn't expect him to notice it. We were already at the restaurant where I would meet the owner of the TAC Group of Companies."Is that call important? Maybe they're already here," Mama said, sounding worried.Knowing Mama, I knew she had also prepared for this evening. She had been insisting for a long time that Papa get acquainted with this prestigious family. Mama wants me to be matched with the eldest son of the family so that it would be easier for Papa to merge his company with theirs. At first, I didn’t want to go along with Mama’s plan, but eventually, I agreed. Honestly, their family is much wealthier than James'. Plus, I couldn't see myself falling in love with that man. I just used him to hurt Lexi, the woman who might take everything I have. I can't let that happen. I’m the only daughter
LEXI'S POVAfter I said everything I wanted to say to Chase, I just left him there in the restaurant. I let him pay for the food that he couldn’t even eat. That was my way of getting back at him for all the pain he caused me.Now, I’m just walking around the mall because I’m not ready to go home yet. I still can't face my very kind sister, Shiela. I’ll go home later when I know everyone is already asleep."Ma'am, your card is really declined."I glanced at the cashier of a well-known dress shop in the mall. I’m not the type of person who likes to eavesdrop, but I didn’t know why I was drawn to the woman wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts. I couldn’t see her face because her back was to me, and she was facing the cashier."Could you try again, please?" the woman said, almost in tears."I'm sorry, Ma'am. But I've already tried several times," the cashier hesitated, replying.I took my card out of my wallet and walked over to the two of them. I quickly handed the cashier my card."Here.
LEXI'S POV"Hey, you haven't told me what happened yesterday! Give me an update!" Savina asked excitedly. As usual, she visited me at my office since it was already five in the afternoon. I had been avoiding her all day because I wasn't in the mood to share yet. I was sure she'd go after James if I told her, and I wasn’t ready to talk about it yet."Let’s talk about it tomorrow, Sav. Okay?" I asked her. I tried to sound cheerful, hoping she wouldn’t notice that I was feeling down. I’d rather like she thought everything was fine with James so she wouldn’t press me further."That’s unfair! We agreed you'd tell me everything. And don’t smile, Lexi. I know you too well," she said sternly.I sighed. No matter how much I tried to pretend, I couldn’t hide the truth from my best friend."Sorry. I’m just not ready to talk yet," I admitted.Savina gave a small smile. "I know. But when you’re ready, just text or call me, okay? Right now, I’m already furious with James. As for him, we're not frie
LEXI'S POVI was really looking forward to the night being over, so when Audrey said she’d drive me to the restaurant, I didn’t hesitate. I just wanted this date to end, so I could go home and get some sleep.“My brother is not here yet. But you can wait here, right?” Chelsea said with a smile when we reached the table she had reserved.“How are you going to get home? You don’t have a car,” I said, remembering that she didn’t have one with her.“I’m fine, Lexi. Don’t worry about me. Just sit down and enjoy the night. Bye!”I couldn’t say anything more because Chelsea had already left. Her reserved table was in a VIP section with its own privacy. It was in a closed space, so besides the lack of people seeing us, no one would be able to hear our conversation.I didn’t ask Chelsea if I’d be waiting long for her brother. It was a blind date after all, and I was already here first. But this worked out better. Now I had a reason if Chelsea ever tried to set me up for another date. I really
LEXI'S POV"Chase, we're not kids anymore. You can't fool me like you used to," I replied sharply. No matter how serious he looked, I wouldn't believe him. With how well he used to pretend before, he wouldn't be able to trick me now. Besides, the only reason he's acting this way is that he needs something from me. And no, I wouldn't give in.We both looked at my phone when it suddenly rang. I glanced at it, frowning slightly when I saw it was Savina calling."You can answer that. Maybe it’s important," Chase said seriously.I didn’t bother standing up to step outside to answer the call."Sav.""Lexi, where are you? It’s James," Savina answered, crying."Why? What happened?" I asked, now feeling nervous.I knew something was wrong. Savina wouldn't call just to pester me for a story. She was crying, which made me even more anxious."James got into an accident."Tears started falling immediately at what I heard. I didn’t even care about Chase anymore. I just stood up and rushed out of th
LEXI'S POVJames is in a coma. I asked Savina not to leave the hospital until the doctor came out of the emergency room. I waited in her car while she went back inside to get an update. After almost half an hour, she returned to tell me what happened. She was about to take me home, but I refused. And now, I am here, outside the hospital, alone and waiting. I really want to see James, but I haven't seen his parents come out yet, so I can't go inside. Knowing them, they wouldn't allow me to see their son. They were blaming me for what happened to their only son, so I quite understand them.I saw Papa leave, and I was sure they'd already gone home. He was trying to call me, but I turned off my phone. I don’t want to talk to Papa right now.I quietly cry here on the side of the hospital when someone suddenly hands me a clean handkerchief. When I looked up, I was momentarily stunned."Grey," I muttered softly. He sat next to me and gently wiped away my tears. I felt awkward about what he w
LEXI'S POV"I will call Grandma Mirasol to inform her about this," Chase said with a smile as we got back into his car."Grey, can we not? At least, not yet?" I asked hesitantly. My husband's smile faded instantly. "Why?"I placed a hand on my stomach and let out a deep sigh. "I didn’t want anyone to know yet. I’m scared that my sister might turn her anger towards our baby. I don’t want our child to get hurt," I said, my voice trembling as tears welled up in my eyes.Chase leaned closer, gently kissing my forehead. "I understand, Lexi. I know it’s selfish, but what if you leave for a while? Go with Grandma abroad. I will handle everything here."I shook my head quickly. "I won’t leave you, Chase. I don’t want to."He stared at me, and after a few moments, he sighed. "Alright, fine. But I think it’s best if you quit your job. I can’t always be there to watch over you, Lexi. And I think it’s safer if we move into the mansion. At least there, I know you’ll be protected," he said firmly.
LEXI'S POVAfter speaking with the investigator, Chase fell into a heavy silence. He drove without a word, heading to an unknown destination. I could feel his confusion and anger, so I chose to remain quiet as well. I was just as lost in my thoughts, unsure of how to process everything I had learned. Was the world really this small for Chase and me?An hour passed, and Chase finally stopped the car. I looked out the window and realized we were by the beach. So absorbed was I in my thoughts that I hadn’t noticed how far we had gone.He got out without a word, and I followed him. He took off his shoes and let the seawater lap at his feet. Then, with all his might, he screamed into the open air.“Grey,” I called softly. He dropped to his knees, overwhelmed, and I quickly approached him.“I don’t know how to feel if I find out my father is truly behind all this,” he said, tears streaming down his face.I shook my head gently. “Grey, don’t think like that yet. Don’t doubt your father unles
LEXI'S POVI opened my eyes as I felt Chase getting up. He headed straight to the bathroom, while I slowly got out of bed. A grimace crossed my face as I felt the heaviness in my body. I lay back down, sensing that something wasn’t quite right. Thankfully, I still had one more day of leave, given that I had just gotten married. As for my husband, I wasn’t sure if he had plans because he seemed to be in a hurry. When he came out of the bathroom, our eyes met.“You’re awake,” he said, looking a bit surprised.I glanced at his outfit. “Are you going out?” I couldn’t help but ask.He gave a small smile and nodded lightly. “I wasn’t sure if I should tell you, but I’m meeting James,” he said directly.“James? Why? I’m coming with you.”I sat up quickly. As I was about to head to the bathroom, Chase grabbed my arm.“Are you ready to hear what he has to say?” he asked seriously.“Ready or not, I need to do this, Grey. We can’t move forward if we don’t start somewhere,” I replied firmly. He si
LEXI'S POV"I love you, Lexi." I was speechless at what Chase said. I don't understand myself because my body's reaction is contrary to what my mind is shouting. My mind really wanted to respond to what he said, but I couldn't even open my mouth. So instead of speaking, I just kissed him.It should be just a quick kiss. But when he held my neck, our kiss deepened even more. His left hand also became restless, caressing my entire body. While he was kissing me, he slowly pushed me back against the bathtub. A small moan escaped my lips as my neck pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub."You're so sexy when moaning, Baby," he said hoarsely to me.I pulled him closer to kiss him again. My hands also became restless, wandering everywhere. And just as I was about to touch him, he immediately stopped my hand."No, Baby. I want our first night to be special."I was about to speak when suddenly the paper bag that had fallen on the floor made a sound. We both turned to look there, and I al
LEXI'S POVIt was already one in the morning when we finally made our way up to one of the rooms at Chase's event place. I couldn’t help but shake my head at the sight of the room—it was still in line with their princess or royal theme. No wonder White Castle is one of the most popular event venues in the entire country.“You’re tired, baby. Want to take a shower? There are clothes in the cabinet,” Chase said seriously while checking something on his phone.I glanced at the paper bag I was holding. Chelsea gave it to me and specifically told me to wear it tonight. I hadn’t looked inside yet, but I had a strong feeling it was nightwear since she even teased that she was excited to have a niece or nephew. Just the thought of it made my face feel warm. She even mentioned that Grandma Mirasol helped her pick it out.Feeling sticky, I decided to head to the bathroom for a shower. I smiled as I saw the bathtub and the array of soaps and scented candles prepared there. I set the paper bag on
LEXI'S POVIt was already 11:00 in the evening when the wedding reception ended, and almost all the guests had left. The only ones remaining were Chase's family and my family. Our families were engaged in a conversation, but it was evident that only my father was actively participating. I also noticed that Chase's stepmother barely spoke. I couldn’t shake off the uneasy feeling I had about her—perhaps because I didn’t feel she had fully accepted me as Chase’s wife.“How long do you think they’ll keep talking? I can’t wait to have you all to myself,” Chase whispered to me, sending shivers down my spine.“Stop it; you already had your fill last night,” I whispered back.“That doesn’t count. You weren’t my wife yet then,” he said, pouting.I couldn’t help but laugh softly and shake my head. Truth be told, I was anxious about what would happen now that our wedding celebration was over. I wasn’t sure how to fully embrace my role as Chase’s wife. I had given myself to him completely, over a
LEXI'S POVAfter the wedding ceremony, Chase and I were already seated together in the bridal car. We were on our way to the wedding reception, though I had no idea where it was. Chase held onto me tightly, as if silently promising never to let me go. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought. It all started with my desire to get back at my half-sister and his desire to avoid marrying Shiela. But now, I couldn't understand what I was feeling. I felt like a genuine bride—happy and fulfilled because my long-dreamed wedding had finally come true. If only my mother were here, this moment would be perfect. As I married Chase, I managed to set aside my anger and thirst for revenge. I focused solely on him, just as Chelsea had advised me. It wasn’t an obligation—it came naturally. I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but Savina seemed to be right all along.“Did you see your sister's reaction?” Chase whispered to me.I shook my head slightly. The truth was, I hadn’t noticed her presence. I w
LEXI'S POVI kept letting out deep sighs as I sat inside the bridal car. Ahead of us was the car carrying Chelsea and Savina, which gave me a sense of reassurance. However, I couldn’t shake off the nervous feeling gnawing at me for reasons I couldn’t explain. To make things worse, my phone was with Savina, and I hadn’t retrieved it before she got in the car with Chelsea. I had been so mesmerized by my wedding gown that I completely forgot to grab it earlier."Ma'am, don't be nervous. You look stunning," the driver remarked, noticing my frequent sighs. He was someone I knew well—Chase’s family driver, who had driven for him countless times."Thank you. Are we still far from the venue?" I couldn’t help but ask.I was startled when he suddenly turned right, while the car carrying the two ladies continued straight. I looked at him with curiosity, my heart beginning to race."Ma’am Lexi, Sir Chase instructed me to take this route to the venue," the driver explained, sounding a bit uneasy.
THIRD POVLexi was awakened by the ringing of her phone. Eyes still closed, she groped for it on the bedside table.“Sav, it’s too early,” she lazily answered her friend's call.“Early? It’s already noon! And isn’t today your wedding day?” her best friend replied. She sat up quickly. Chase was no longer beside her, and she noticed that she was already dressed. Because of what happened between her and Chase the night before, she hadn’t noticed how late it had gotten. Now, she’d overslept.“Get up now. Chelsea and I are on our way to your condo. See you soon.”Savina ended the call, leaving her furrowing her brows. She got up to look for her groom but found only a note pinned in the fridge.Baby,I’ll see you in church, okay? I love you.—ChaseLexi couldn’t help but smile. Today was the day she and Chase would get married. She had successfully outmaneuvered her sister, and she couldn’t wait to see her sister’s face when she walked down the aisle. She also promised herself that after th
