LEXI'S POV
"Hey, you haven't told me what happened yesterday! Give me an update!" Savina asked excitedly.
As usual, she visited me at my office since it was already five in the afternoon. I had been avoiding her all day because I wasn't in the mood to share yet. I was sure she'd go after James if I told her, and I wasn’t ready to talk about it yet.
"Let’s talk about it tomorrow, Sav. Okay?" I asked her. I tried to sound cheerful, hoping she wouldn’t notice that I was feeling down. I’d rather like she thought everything was fine with James so she wouldn’t press me further.
"That’s unfair! We agreed you'd tell me everything. And don’t smile, Lexi. I know you too well," she said sternly.
I sighed. No matter how much I tried to pretend, I couldn’t hide the truth from my best friend.
"Sorry. I’m just not ready to talk yet," I admitted.
Savina gave a small smile. "I know. But when you’re ready, just text or call me, okay? Right now, I’m already furious with James. As for him, we're not friends anymore," she said, which made me smile a little.
Just then, my office phone rang, and Savina lightly tapped me on the shoulder.
"Okay, I’ll go ahead. Just call me, alright?"
I nodded as she walked away. I then turned my attention to the phone and answered it immediately.
"Hello, This is the Finance Department. How may I help you?"
"Ma’am Lexi, someone’s here to see you downstairs. She said she is your sister," the security guard said.
I rolled my eyes. "Okay, thanks. I’ll head down now."
It was the first time Shiela had come to visit me at work. I had been avoiding them last night and this morning. I made sure to come home last night after everyone was asleep, and I left early this morning at six, so I wouldn’t run into Shiela. But unfortunately, she was downstairs. I didn’t want to face her or talk to her, but I didn’t want to cause a scene either.
I quickly gathered my things and went downstairs. When I got to the lobby, I saw her sitting there patiently waiting for me. I shook my head and walked toward her.
When she saw me, she stood up and raised an eyebrow.
"You didn’t answer James last night. You just left him and made him pay for food he couldn’t even eat," she said sharply.
I smiled. "Your dog’s a fast tattletale, huh?"
Shiela looked surprised by my response. This was the first time I had raised my voice to her. For years, I had just let her insult me, but I had never answered back. I preferred to stay quiet because I didn’t want to escalate things.
"And now you’re answering back? Feeling brave?" she said, grinning.
"You don’t really care about me, do you? So why don’t you go comfort your FRIEND instead?" I snapped.
"Comfort? He doesn’t need that because he wasn’t hurt by what you did," she said proudly.
Her words felt like a needle piercing my chest. She was right. James probably wasn’t hurt at all. In fact, the situation probably worked out better for him—he didn’t have to pretend to love me anymore.
"Looks like you’re the one who needs comforting. You still haven’t learned, have you? I told you, you'd never be happy because you’re a huge mistake," she said coldly.
I didn’t respond further. I just stared at her without emotion. I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
"I’m just here to warn you. Don’t you ever tell this to Papa. Whatever you say, I can always turn things around. In the end, you’ll be the one looking bad. So just stay quiet," she said with a sneer before walking out of the building.
As soon as she was gone, the tears I had been holding back began to fall. I wanted to tell Papa everything, just to feel like I still had parents. But Shiela was right. No matter what I said, I knew he would side with her and her mother. He never listened to me.
I quickly wiped my tears when my phone rang. I frowned when I saw an unknown number. Though hesitant, I answered the call.
"Lexi!"
I immediately pulled the phone away from my ear because of Chelsea’s loud voice. I knew it was her because of the many stories she had shared with me last night.
"Chelsea," I said, my voice soft.
"Where are you? I’ll pick you up," she said energetically.
"Wait, why?" I asked, confused.
"I’m going to fix you up because tonight is your date with my brother."
"W-What? Tonight? Your brother agreed so quickly?" I asked in disbelief.
I had agreed to go on a date with her brother, thinking he wouldn’t actually agree, but now it seemed he was okay with it. I mean, what guy would agree to his sister’s request to set up a date with someone they barely knew?
"Wait, I’m outside your building. But it’s already past 5 PM. Have you gone home yet?" she asked seriously.
I pressed my forehead in frustration. "I’m still here. Hold on, I’ll be right down."
I walked out of the building and saw Chelsea standing across the street. I quickly walked over to her.
"Have you been waiting too long?" I asked.
"Not really. I just got here," she smiled and answered.
"Wait, how did you get here? Did you take a taxi?" I asked.
She had a car last night, so I knew she had a driver, but I didn’t see her car parked anywhere.
"I had my brother drop me off. But he left right away. I told him you’d meet later at the restaurant."
I hesitated but held her hand and led her to the parking lot. Once we were in my car, I spoke up.
"Look, Chelsea. I really thought you were just joking, and I didn’t expect your brother to agree. So this is a bit of a shock," I said calmly.
"Don’t worry, Lexi. I’ll take care of everything. Let’s go to the mall," she said, smiling.
I sighed. "Okay, Chelsea. I’m giving you this one time because you asked. But just this once, okay? You know my heart is still broken, and I’m not ready for any kind of relationship, alright?"
"Okay!"
I nodded, still feeling uneasy. Even though Chelsea agreed with what I said, I couldn’t shake the feeling of nervousness.
When we got to the mall, she immediately pulled me into a dress shop. I hesitated because the prices there weren’t cheap.
Chelsea quickly picked out dresses without even looking at the price tags. A sales clerk followed us around, holding the dresses Chelsea picked out.
"Chelsea," I called her attention.
"Try this on, Lexi. Let’s see which one looks good on you," she said.
I turned to face her, looking straight into her eyes. She paused for a moment, a bit startled.
"Chelsea, I have dresses at home. I’ll just go home and let you know where we’ll meet your brother," I said seriously.
She immediately shook her head. "Lexi, I’m the one planning this date. Let me take care of getting you ready. Please, let me do this. This is my way of thanking you for helping me last night."
I sighed. Why was it so hard to say no to Chelsea? I had no choice but to try on the dresses she picked.
After several changes, Chelsea still hadn’t chosen one. We had been there for half an hour, and I was already starting to feel embarrassed in front of the sales clerk, but she didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she looked like she was used to Chelsea shopping here.
"Alright! We’ll buy this one, Miss," Chelsea said happily when she saw me in one of the dresses.
It was a simple body-fitting light pink dress, just above the knee, with half sleeves.
"Perfect, Ma’am. It also comes with a pair of heel-toe sandals. What size do you need?" the sales clerk asked, smiling.
"Size 8," I replied.
Chelsea paid for the dress and sandals, then took me to a salon. I didn’t protest because I knew I couldn’t say no. I would just go along with what she wanted. I was sure this would be the last time she’d ask for something like that.
"Lexi, do you want to try contact lenses?" Chelsea asked.
I wore glasses because my eyes were still a bit swollen from crying earlier that morning. I preferred to wear glasses so no one would notice my puffy eyes.
"I’d rather keep my glasses on," I said softly.
Chelsea smiled at me. "I like that too, Lexi."
After half an hour, I was done with my makeover at the salon. They just did light makeup. I didn’t want them to fix my hair, so I kept it loose. When I was done, I got dressed and showed Chelsea my appearance.
"Oh my god, Lexi! You look so beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"Stop flattering me," I replied playfully.
Chelsea immediately shook her head.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if my brother proposed to you right away, Lexi Ann."
LEXI'S POVI was really looking forward to the night being over, so when Audrey said she’d drive me to the restaurant, I didn’t hesitate. I just wanted this date to end, so I could go home and get some sleep.“My brother is not here yet. But you can wait here, right?” Chelsea said with a smile when we reached the table she had reserved.“How are you going to get home? You don’t have a car,” I said, remembering that she didn’t have one with her.“I’m fine, Lexi. Don’t worry about me. Just sit down and enjoy the night. Bye!”I couldn’t say anything more because Chelsea had already left. Her reserved table was in a VIP section with its own privacy. It was in a closed space, so besides the lack of people seeing us, no one would be able to hear our conversation.I didn’t ask Chelsea if I’d be waiting long for her brother. It was a blind date after all, and I was already here first. But this worked out better. Now I had a reason if Chelsea ever tried to set me up for another date. I really
LEXI'S POV"Chase, we're not kids anymore. You can't fool me like you used to," I replied sharply. No matter how serious he looked, I wouldn't believe him. With how well he used to pretend before, he wouldn't be able to trick me now. Besides, the only reason he's acting this way is that he needs something from me. And no, I wouldn't give in.We both looked at my phone when it suddenly rang. I glanced at it, frowning slightly when I saw it was Savina calling."You can answer that. Maybe it’s important," Chase said seriously.I didn’t bother standing up to step outside to answer the call."Sav.""Lexi, where are you? It’s James," Savina answered, crying."Why? What happened?" I asked, now feeling nervous.I knew something was wrong. Savina wouldn't call just to pester me for a story. She was crying, which made me even more anxious."James got into an accident."Tears started falling immediately at what I heard. I didn’t even care about Chase anymore. I just stood up and rushed out of th
LEXI'S POVJames is in a coma. I asked Savina not to leave the hospital until the doctor came out of the emergency room. I waited in her car while she went back inside to get an update. After almost half an hour, she returned to tell me what happened. She was about to take me home, but I refused. And now, I am here, outside the hospital, alone and waiting. I really want to see James, but I haven't seen his parents come out yet, so I can't go inside. Knowing them, they wouldn't allow me to see their son. They were blaming me for what happened to their only son, so I quite understand them.I saw Papa leave, and I was sure they'd already gone home. He was trying to call me, but I turned off my phone. I don’t want to talk to Papa right now.I quietly cry here on the side of the hospital when someone suddenly hands me a clean handkerchief. When I looked up, I was momentarily stunned."Grey," I muttered softly. He sat next to me and gently wiped away my tears. I felt awkward about what he w
Third-Person POV"Has your daughter come home yet?"Ricky glanced at his wife, who had just entered the living room. She had come from their bedroom, and he assumed she was just checking on him since he was still in the living room."Not yet. And I can't contact her," Ricky replied seriously. It was already midnight, and his daughter, Lexi, still hadn’t returned. He had no idea where she had gone since she left the hospital earlier. He had thought she had gone home, but the maid told him that the young lady had yet to arrive."Your daughter is starting to be a troublemaker," his wife commented, sitting beside him."Minda.""What? Don’t you know that because of what happened to James, the Smith family might pull out their investment from our company?" she said seriously.Ricky sighed deeply. He had to admit that this was one of his concerns too. He had worked for years to court the Smith family to invest in their company. Now, all of that might be gone in an instant due to what happene
LEXI'S POVIt's the weekend, but I woke up early. Actually, I couldn't sleep properly because of what happened. I still can't believe the things Papa said to me last night. I didn't think Aunt Minda and Shiela could manipulate me so easily. But what's done is done. Right now, I don't know what to do."Lexi, hija."I looked toward the door of my room. It was Linda, knocking. So, I got up and opened the door for her."Linda.""Did I wake you? I heard about what happened to James. Your father and aunt are going there. I thought maybe you'd want to go with them," she said calmly.I gave a bitter smile. Linda knows that even though I'm angry at James, my concern for him still outweighs everything else."What about Shiela?" I asked, changing the subject."Shiela left early too. She's all dressed up. Maybe she has a date," Linda answered.I clenched my fists. I knew what my brilliant sister was working on—being the wife of the heir to the TAC Group of Companies."Wait, are you okay? Your eye
LEXI'S POVChase and his family are the owners of the TAC Group of Companies. Fate seems to be playing with me too much. The woman my ex mentioned to me a few days ago is actually my sister. I never imagined that we would need each other because of Shiela's schemes. My current problem is how to talk to Chase. I've been staring at my phone for a while now because I don't know how to approach him. I don't have his number yet, but I can easily ask Chelsea for it. I just don't know how to make the first move with Chase."Are you just going to stare at your phone? I thought you were sure about this," Savina suddenly said, pulling me out of my thoughts.I looked at her. She's with me because it's the weekend, and she doesn't want to leave me alone because I might do something impulsively."How do I start, Sav?" I asked her, confused."Hmm. That's tricky since you haven't seen each other in eight years, and your breakup wasn't exactly good. And what if he’s into your sister? That would make
LEXI'S POV"Why didn't you tell me that my sister was the one they planned to set you up with?" I boldly asked Chase.I sat across from him, and when I glanced at Savina, she was already leaving the restaurant. She gave me a nod, signaling that she was heading home. When I looked back at Trevor, I realized he was staring at me. I quickly turned away, feeling embarrassed."So, you found out. Is that why you suddenly changed your mind?" he asked seriously.I took a deep breath. I wasn’t sure if now was the right time to tell him the truth. But I knew Chase well. He’d sense that there was a heavy reason behind my sudden appearance in front of him. Besides, I didn’t want to hide anything from him. We needed each other, and we both needed to be honest."Grey, it's a long story. Do you have time to talk?" I asked softly. He smiled slightly. "You know, I set aside this day to find a woman who could help me with my problem. And since you turned down that woman, you’ll have to spend the whole
LEXI'S POV"So, are you willing to work with me?" I hesitantly asked Chase.I was just following him as we walked toward the gymnasium. I couldn’t help but reminisce about the last conversation we had. I didn’t know why it was coming back to me now. It no longer mattered because it was in the past. I was here because I needed his help."Are you ready to marry me?" he asked directly.I froze for a moment, but eventually, I just nodded. "Yes," I replied briefly.I had already prepared myself for this kind of scenario because it was necessary to hurt my sister the most. It was the biggest revenge I could take on her."You're not the Lexi I used to know. You're the kindest person I've ever met."His words made my tears fall uncontrollably. "I never thought I’d end up like this. All I wanted was for my father to love me, but even that, they denied me. I’m tired of being kind, Chase. And I don’t want to drag you into my mess, but you’re the only one who can help me against them," I said qui
THIRD POVLexi was about to reach for Gino’s hand to go with him when they both froze—Shiela’s cell phone suddenly rang. They simultaneously turned to look at the young woman as she fished the phone out of her bag. Lexi was suddenly filled with anxiety for a reason she couldn't quite explain.“Yes, Charlene?” Shiela answered the call.“You fool! Where are you right now? Have you got Lexi yet?” Charlene asked nervously.“Why? What’s wrong?” Shiela asked, confused.“My god, Shiela! If I had known this would happen, I wouldn’t have let you use my people. I might get dragged into your family’s mess,” Charlene snapped.“Wait, wait—what are you talking about?”“Don’t you know yet? Your mother is already in police custody. She’s being charged with murder.”Shiela turned pale at the news. Her heartbeat quickened with fear, and her hands began to sweat.“A-are you sure about that?”"Shiela, it’s on national TV. The whole country knows what your mother did, and Chase’s mother is involved, too.
THIRD POVShiela gave a bitter smile upon hearing the voice of the man who had hurt her repeatedly. The sweet, affectionate tone he used with her just days ago was now gone. It was all an act—to get information about her mother.“Relax. There’s no need to get mad, Chase. They’re safe for now,” she said emotionlessly.“Don’t you dare hurt them,” Chase said, panic in his voice. She smiled again and sighed deeply. “You’ve got some nerve to say that to me now. You lied to me and gave me false hope. All those lies—for what? To get information?”“And why would I get information from you? Do you even know what really happened with the fire in my condo back then?” Chase shot back.Shiela froze, still burning with rage. She took a deep breath as the man she had called earlier finally arrived. He was panting, clearly having run a long way to reach the location. She gave him a faint smile and turned her attention back to the person on the phone.“I’m sure you won’t report this to the police. Eve
THIRD POVChase’s office was thick with tension. His father and his sister Chelsea were there. Spread out on his table were the pieces of evidence he had gathered to strengthen the case he filed against his stepmother and her lover, Minda. His father examined them one by one, while he and Chelsea waited in silence for his reaction.“Papa, I’m sorry that this is how you had to find out everything,” he finally broke the silence.Chelsea stepped closer to him and held his hand tightly. He was immensely grateful to his sister; despite the pain of everything happening, she still chose to stand by what was right. Now, all he hoped was that their father would do the same.Carlo slowly set the papers down and let out a deep sigh. “I never thought my wife would go this far,” he said, clearly dismayed. The siblings exchanged glances. Their father was calm. He didn’t even look surprised—almost as if he already knew all of it.“Papa,” Chelsea called softly.“I’ve known for a long time that your m
THIRD POV"I didn’t expect that we’d meet here."Gino turned toward the woman who suddenly spoke. He wasn’t surprised to see who it was—he could never forget the voice of the woman he hurt because of his deep love for Lexi."Savina," he murmured softly.Savina stepped closer to the grave and gently placed the flowers she had brought for her friend. A bitter smile crossed her face—after all these years, the first man she had ever loved was standing there, at her best friend’s final resting place."May I ask why you're here?" she couldn't help but ask.Gino let out a sigh. "Lexi was my friend too."Savina took a deep breath and turned to face Gino, who was staring off into the distance. She couldn’t miss the empty beer bottles beside him. His appearance had also changed drastically—so different from how he looked on his social media accounts.“It’s been eight years, right? Don’t you think it’s about time you finally tell me the real reason you broke up with me back then?” she said, gath
LEXI'S POV“Chase.”Chase and I both turned to Chelsea when she called him. We had just finished eating breakfast. Chelsea still hadn’t gone home ever since she found out about her mother. She had asked her brother to cover for her so that Uncle Carlo wouldn’t worry.Chelsea had been speaking to us again, but not the same way as before. There was now a wall between the two of us, which I completely understood. I couldn’t blame her for how she was acting towards me and Chase. What mattered now was that she still trusted us.“Can I come with you today? I just want to see Papa.”Chase and I looked at each other. I nodded, showing that I agreed with what Chelsea wanted. I trusted her enough to know that she wouldn’t tell anyone I was alive.“Are you ready to see her?” Chase asked seriously.Chelsea lowered her head, and I didn’t miss how her fists clenched. “I need to accept it, right? No matter what I do, the past won’t change. And just like you, Chase, I only want all this chaos to end.
THIRD POV"Gino, where the hell are you now?"Gino pulled his phone away from his ear as his sister Charlene shouted at him. This was one of the reasons he often hesitated to answer her calls—he knew she was just looking for him."I'm heading home soon," he replied quietly."Wait—are you drunk again?" she asked angrily. He smiled faintly. "Don’t worry. I can go home. Bye."He didn’t wait for Charlene’s response and quickly ended the call. He returned the phone to his pocket and took another swig from the bottle he had been holding for a while. It had lost its chill, and he winced at the bitter taste.“If I had known that would be our last conversation, I would’ve made the most of it,” he said sadly, staring at the tombstone he visited nearly every day. Tears fell again as he took another sip of beer.GINO'S POV (FLASHBACK)Shiela’s bullying was a normal thing in our school. On the first day of class, I was just quietly observing while waiting for Chase. I was looking at the school gat
THIRD POVThe whole day passed, and Shiela tried several times to call and talk to Chase, but he never answered her calls. She spent the entire day sitting in the park, still hoping the young man would call her back—but she was disappointed. She had almost no tears left to cry after that morning’s emotional breakdown. She never imagined being hurt like this, thinking fate had finally started favoring her.She couldn’t understand why all of this was happening to her. Everyone she thought she could trust had been deceiving her. The life she thought was blessed turned out to be more complicated than Lexi’s.Shiela went home in a daze and gave a bitter smile when she saw her mother and Anna eating together at the house. When Anna saw her, she immediately stood up.“It’s good you’re here. Come, eat with us,” the woman said with a smile.“Your Aunt Anna cooked your favorite dish, dear,” her mother added. She turned her back on the two women. “I’m just going to see Papa.”She didn’t let them
SHIELA'S POVI didn’t even know what had happened anymore—I just suddenly found myself inside my car, parked not too far from the TAC building. I was simply staring at the entrance and exit. I didn’t know whether I should tell Trevor what I’d found out. I had no idea how he’d react once he learned that Lexi’s death wasn’t an accident. My life was starting to become smooth again. Things were going well between Chase and me, but after what my mom confessed, I wasn’t sure if it would all come crashing down. Even from the grave, my half-sister continued to bring chaos into my life. I couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t just disappear from my path.My thoughts were cut short when I saw Chase come out of the building and head straight to his car. I wanted to talk to him, but he seemed to be in a rush. I tried calling him again, but he didn’t pick up.“What the h*ll, Chase?” I muttered to myself, frowning. I saw him glance at his phone when I called—but instead of answering, he just put it
THIRD POVBecause of what they talked about, Shiela immediately went to her mother’s office. She had now realized that only Chase could help her. As much as she didn’t want to believe that Lexi was haunting them, she couldn’t think of any other explanation for her mother’s strange behavior. That’s why she needed to talk to her mother and convince her to visit the faith healer Chase had consulted. When she arrived at her mother’s office, she was surprised to see Chase’s mother, Anna, there. She couldn’t help but wonder why the two women have been seeing each other more frequently lately. She wanted to feel happy that they were seemingly getting along—it was a huge advantage for her in winning over Chase—but she felt the opposite. She wasn’t happy, for reasons she couldn’t quite explain.“Sweetheart, do you need something?” her mother asked in surprise. Her gaze shifted between the two women. She didn’t want to assume anything improper, but she had walked in on them holding hands. She h
