I lifted the flute of my drink to my lips again and downed the bitter liquid which I think tastes sweeter than my life. I watched my father’s elite guests having a great time at the party. After all, they were exclusive guests of Harris Jones, the business mogul who was ready to step down from his position tonight and give the inheritance to his son, my brother for namesake, Caleb Jones. Another reason of their celebration was my sister’s twenty-first birthday, the favourite daughter of Jones family.
And I am the black sheep of the family whom everyone despises, reasons unknown to me and honestly, I don’t care anymore. They hate me since I was born.
I am only allowed to be a part of such extravagant parties when they have to portray a happy family picture. So, I am enjoying this party as much as I can, ignoring the constant ache in my heart when I watch my parents introducing my siblings with pride to their friends and potential business partners.
Deciding, I’d need another one to calm down my nerves and to pose for one last picture, I walked to the bar to fetch my drink when I bumped into someone. I looked up to see a man staring down at me.
“Watch where you go, Miss.” He hissed.
“I am sorry, Sir.” I apologised to him when we were equally at fault.
“You just ruined my limited edition shirt which your petty sorry won’t compensate.” He said and it was something I couldn’t take.
I finally looked at him.
“I said sorry because I accidentally collided with you and you could also watch where you were going, Mister.” I matched his pitch and it was enough to draw others’ attention on us.
His eyes darkened after hearing my words and his fists clenched.
“Do you know whom are you talking with or you're only pretending that you don't know me, strawberry?” He raised his brow and took a step closer which I found quite provoking. He was making a scene and I feared if my family sees it, they’d find fault in me.
His sly smile, they way he stared down at me, it seemed he knew me well but I saw this man for the first time, yet so familiar.
Perhaps, all the scoundrels look same.
“No, I don’t and I have no interest in knowing you, Mister. So, now excuse me? I’ll pay for your limited edition shirt if it makes you happy.” I said in annoyed tone because the alcohol in my body and his attitude began to piss me off.
“Do you really think you can pay me back, strawberry. I never forget dept." He smirked. He again used a creepy endearment and offered me a plate of iced straberries but how could he know that strawberries are my favorite.
I ignored him. This man was giving me creeps.
“What’s going on in here, Ryan darling? And Claire what the hell are you doing with my fiancé?” My sister’s voice forced me to divert my attention from him to her.
I was shocked to hear her words. Did she just say fiancé?
She’s younger than me, only twenty-one and this man looks in his thirties.
“Yes, love. I was fetching you a drink but this uncivilized miss bumped into me and also not accepting her mistake.” Ryan said to her while circling his arm around her waist while I waited for the drama unfold. Mia always finds a way to make me a villain in everyone’s eyes.
Her green eyes glared down at me. she grabbed my forearm and before I could say anything or protest, she dragged me towards our parents and my stomach sank with fear.
“Mom! Dad! Look what your daughter has done.” Mia drew their attention on me while I looked down at my feet.
Their smiles disappeared and replaced by a deadpanned look, they gave me an accusing look as if they proved me guilty without listening to what I have done. My brother shook his head in disbelief. He never said awful things to me but his silent coldness said it all.
“Claire, I told you not to start your drama at such an important family event.” My mother whispered yelled at me as they led us to a vacant room for such discussions.
“I didn’t do anything, Mom. I accidentally collided with Mr. Ryan and his shirt got ruined with the drink. I apologized but he was the one who stretched the argument.” I said the truth.
My mother gasped and palmed her mouth while Dad charged towards me and slapped me across my left cheek. It stings, tears brimmed into my eyes. It wasn’t new but every time it pains more than past.
“You ungrateful brat! Do you have any idea who is Mr. Ryan Bale?” He roared.
I sobbed rubbing where his hand left an imprint.
“I..I..didn’t disrespect him. I swear.” I whispered but it didn’t matter to them.
“Shut up! We do not want to listen to your lame excuses, Claire. He is our biggest investor. Very few people know that our shares are falling. Mr. Ryan stood up to help us and in return, he wants to marry a daughter of our family so we are about to announce Mia and his engagement tonight but you have to cast your evil eye on everyone’s happiness, the only thing you have been doing since you were born, you killed your twin brother, if it wasn’t you, whom doctors saved first, my boy would have been alive.” My mother spatted with venom and malice.
I had listened to this reason for the millionth time from my mother but how it was supposed to be my fault?
“Claudia, lock her in her room. We can’t afford to lose this golden opportunity. Our son stepped up to continue the partnership between us and Bale’s company. I do not want him to upset more.” Dad said to my mother but his eyes were digging holes in me.
“No, Dad, first she has to apologize to my fiancé. She disrespected him in front of everyone.” Mia whined to our parents like a spoiled child while smirking at me.
“Mia is right, honey. Claire has to apologize to Mr. Ryan. He is the future son-in-law of our family, our Mia’s husband.” Mom advocated her. The moment was abruptly disturbed by loud footsteps.
“There’s no need for Miss Claire to apologize to me. She is right, I was also not watching where I was going. So, it’s my fault as well.”
Ryan’s smooth voice forced everyone to look at him but I chose to look down.
“Mr. Bale, we’re sincerely sorry in our daughter’s behalf. She’s a bit clumsy but our other daughter Mia is perfect in everything. She won’t give you a chance to complain.” Mom smiled sweetly at him. Clearly, she was making an attempt to butter him.
“Who wants everything perfect in their lives? At least, I don’t.” Ryan smirked as his steps halted right in front of me, his eyes were glued on me with a strange darkness in their depth.
“Sweetheart, what are you saying?” Mia tried to link her arm with his but he yanked her away.
“Mr. Harris, when I said that I’d marry a daughter in your family, I didn’t meet an interesting personality like Miss Claire and I’d be very glad and consider to offer fifty-fifty partnership for our next five projects if you allow me to marry your elder daughter Claire Jones. I believe she’s my match and I’d love to break her haughty attitude.” Ryan declared and I froze.
[ Claire ] “What are you saying, Mr. Ryan? She isn’t good enough to be your wife. Please, marry my younger daughter Mia. She is good in everything.” Dad tried to plaster a smile on his while I prayed for the same.I had been planning to leave this house as soon as I save enough money to settle down far from my family.Mia’s eyes welled up with tears, “Ryan, don’t do this to me. You don’t know anything about my sister. She’s a bitch of low character, she always snatches my happiness. Five years ago, she did the same and God punished her. She hasn’t good grades as well and look at her fashion sense.” Mia blabbered to Ryan but I had to wince when she lied about my grades. It was all a lie. I never had a love affair.“I don’t need to hear about my future wife from you, Mia. She is beautiful and not to mention intelligent who doesn’t spend money on buying unnecessary things. I like her.” Ryan said but I wasn’t driven by his praises. His intentions were hideous.“Mr. Ryan, please try to un
[ Claire ]Walking in the middle of nowhere, my body drenched in the rainfall and shivering with cold, I had no place to go. My tears also dried up after crying for hours. What sin have I committed to bear such harsh punishment? I sat down under a shed, wrapping my arms around my torso. I bit my lips to supress the teeth clattering. It was freezing cold. My family didn’t have the decency to let me collect my belongings.I was tired of living this life for last twenty-foursix years but I couldn’t gather my courage to end my life.I thought about calling my grandparents but dropped the idea since they live in countryside, enjoying their last days. They’d be hurt if they learn about what my family did to me. I couldn’t be a burden for them. Besides, I didn’t have any money or my phone.Suddenly, I heard roaring of a car in a deserted lane and it stopped here not even a creature could be seen. My heartbeats accelerated in fear since I was all alone. The flash of the headlight blinded my e
[ Claire ]The warm temperature in the luxurious living room of Tristan Pierce comforted my body. I could feel my pulse. The awkward silence between us could be sensed in the thick air.I had a homely feeling wrapping me in its warmth in a complete stranger's house whom I trusted and accompanied him here.“Here, have this, it’ll help to normal your body temperature, Miss Jones.” He offered me some brandy which I took and gulped with an incoherent ‘thanks’.He sat across me with crossed legs and his hands rested on arms of his single sofa. I tried my best to avoid looking at him.“Are you feeling better now?” He asked after a few moments of excruciating silence.“Yes. We can talk now.” I said gaining some confidence.“Great, I can tell that you’re a smart woman, Claire.” He said addressing me by my first name for the very first time and I hate to admit that it sounded so good, strange.“What is the use of this smartness when I can’t fight for my rights, Mr. Pierce. I allowed them to ri
[ Tristan ]“Tristan, how long? How long are you going to waste your life for something which is your past? Think about your son and your own life. One day or another you’ll need a life partner, a companion. She isn coming back. She must be happy with a family of hers.” My ailing father gave me the same advice I have been hearing from last five years.I was facing the window, the grey sky, rainfall drizzling in silver chains with thunderbolts, it was similar to my inner soul. It’s been years since the woman I loved passionately, like a crazy lover, broke my heart into million pieces and mocked me by sleepingby disappearing after giving birth to my son. I searched her everywhere but a year later I found out that she met with Ryan fucking Balean accident and lost her memories. Her parents told me that she married another man and settled in London. i couldn’t bring myself to love someone again because I am still not over her.“Dad, I have to tell you something. I thought I’d tell you
[ Claire ]I felt uneasy after meeting Tristan’s father, the same ache I experienced when I looked into Tristan’s green eyes for the first time. Why did Mr. Thomas Pierce also looked familiar. Perhaps, I have seen him in the news or business parties.“Miss Jones, we have reached at my son’s school.”I heard Tristan’s voice who ripped me out of my trance.I realised we were outside the giant gates of the most prestigious school of the city. There was no one means it was the private entry.“I am sorry. I didn’t realize.” I passed him an awkward smile. His piercing green eyes flashed another emotion but his neutral face didn’t contour it.“He is a sensitive kid, please ensure that you don’t overwhelm him.” He instructed me and I nodded my head. I felt a twisted knot in my stomach.I agreed to marry a man with a child which makes me a stepmother to a five years old boy at the age of twenty-six. It sounded strange and from inside, I was fretting. I didn’t know whether it was a good decisio
[ Claire ]“Congratulations, on your new journey as husband and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Pierce. Here’s your marriage certificate.” The officer, who proceeded our legal marriage procedure, congratulated us while giving us the marriage certificates.I stared down at the laminated document in my hands. Our signatures were printed and there was the seal of the government and the court which means I am officially married to Tristan Pierce, the richest guy in the city.“Tristan, the rings?” Mr. Thomas Pierce cleared his throat and signalled his son to make me wear the rings. I saw couple rings means I have to do the same.“Mom, Dad, exchange the rings.” Travis exclaimed, his happiness was evident on his gleaming face.Tristan slowly held my hand, I again felt conscious under his intense eyes, my hand shivered when our skins came in contact. He picked a solitaire, the most beautiful diamond cut I have ever seen, surrounded by small sapphires on a platinum band. It also looked familiar. He slid th
[ Tristan ]Her question took me off guard. I didn’t expect her to ask me this because I am not in a mental state to answer this question.“I don’t think so.” I somehow managed to come up with the most obvious and natural response. Her face reflected disappointment but I couldn’t tell her that we have known each other for years, we shared the most beautiful moments together, created memories which helped me to live without her for five years. I wish I could tell her that she’s the first and last woman whom I gave my heart.I don’t want to scare her.“I don’t know but whenever I look at you or your family, I feel a sense of familiarity. I think I am pressing my mind too much.” She said looking away at other direction.“We should head back home. Staying here in a public place isn’t favourable until we announce it through a press release.” I said. Her questions threw me into dilemma.“Okay.” She said in a low voice. My driver opened the door of the backseat and I waited for her to sit fi
[ Claire ] “Claire, don’t stress yourself. Tomorrow’s newspapers will bring you a good news but for now, I think you should see this.” Thomas, who sat beside I and Tristan in their living room, said. The questions of media kept stirring in my mind. How Tristan turned the table and portrayed my family as the villain along with Ryan Bale, it grew my anxiety to next level. How’d they react? They’d hate me even more?“Claire, are you okay?” Tristan’s soft voice brought me back on the earth and I stared down at the tablet. A famous news channel was telecasting the interview we gave to the media a while ago.“Umm, yeah. I am fine.” I forced a smile.“I don’t think you look fine from any angle. You are still pondering over the consequences of our announcement, right?” He raised his brow.“They’ll retaliate, Tristan. My family hates me already and how the media is criticizing them, it’ll only add fuel in the fire.” I said out my worries.“I’ll handle everything, Claire and you shouldn’t be f
