Evelyn’s POV
I locked the watch in a drawer in my dresser and began packing my belongings, hoping that when the divorce became final, I could leave as quickly as possible. The shapeless dresses I had bought to make it easier to take care of our son now felt like they represented how I had lost myself for their sake. Denying my individuality for the sake of the family. A family now in tatters.Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from the doctor. It was a contact card, followed by a message:
“Mrs. Whitman, we've scheduled a follow-up check-up for you. As you know, there’s still a chance for therapy, if we act now.”I hesitated before typing back: "I'll consider it."
A month ago, I went to the hospital for a check-up due to some health issues. Today, besides being my wedding anniversary, I also went to pick up those results. That’s when I learned that it was early-stage stomach cancer. Then, to spare Adrian any pain, I decided to wait before starting treatment, planning to spend time with my family first.
But now, all I could think about was Adrian and Vivian's intimate embrace, and Liam's dismissive tantrums. What had I valued all these years?
I locked myself in my bedroom. The next day, I found a smart blue dress from years ago, hanging in my wardrobe. When did I buy this? Was it during college, or after graduation?
Compared to my usual black, white, and gray, I liked this dress much more. I felt it complimented my dark blue eyes. After changing into the dress, I sat at my vanity table to apply some light makeup. I brushed black mascara liberally over my long, light-coloured lashes to darken them, before pulling my honey-blonde hair up from my shoulders into a tidy up-style, for that stylish, well-groomed finish.
Then, grabbing one of my designer handbags that had been collecting dust, I left the house and headed to the hospital. Even though I was sick, I didn't want to appear completely lifeless.
The doctor had advised that the physician I was scheduled to see would be on the fifth floor. As I stepped off the elevator onto the fifth floor, someone looked at me, and I saw a flash of recognition in his eyes.
"Evelyn? Is that you?"
"Wait, is it Nate?" I was equally shocked to see him.
Nate, from my college senior year, had gone abroad after graduation and we lost touch. It was a surprise to run into him here.
A pleasant smile spread across his face. "What a coincidence. The oncologist assigned me to a Mrs. Whitman, a patient named Evelyn. I thought it was just someone with the same name as you."
"Just a coincidence," I replied, not dwelling on it.
"I didn't expect to see you again, and certainly not under these circumstances. I always thought when we finally reunited, it would be in a more… cheerful place," Nate said, his voice tinged with sadness.
I ran my fingers through my hair. With a brave small smile I said, "Where we meet again doesn't matter, Nate. You left so suddenly after graduation. Why didn’t you say goodbye?"
Nate seemed lost in thought for a moment, as if revisiting old memories. "At the time..."
It felt like a lifetime ago. Nate had been my senior, and although we didn’t have many social interactions, I often asked him to help me with my thesis.
The day he left was the day of our graduation ceremony. I remember backstage when he said, "Evelyn, I’ve got an opportunity to go abroad for further studies. Would you like to join me?"
"Where?" I had asked, just out of curiosity.
"Overseas. You know I've always wanted to be a doctor. Will you come with me?" His gaze was sincere and intense.
At that moment, the noise backstage went all out of focus, fading into the background. But just as he finished speaking, someone else appeared and wrapped his arms around my waist. It was Adrian.
"She can’t go with you," Adrian said, his voice dripping with affection. "My girlfriend is staying right here, with me."
I hadn’t expected Adrian to ever say that. I had shyly confessed my feelings to him during college, and he’d been so gentle and kind to me. But I never imagined he would admit to being my boyfriend at graduation.
I had turned to hug him, feeling thrilled. "Adrian! Are you finally willing to admit I’m your girlfriend?"
"Of course. I just didn’t want to distract you from your studies. Now that we’ve graduated, we can truly be together," Adrian had said, holding me close, his tone gentle.
I had been lost in the sweetness of our love ever since.
Back in the present, Nate was still the same as ever. His wide smile and bright eyes, full of warmth. "Let me take you to your check-up," he offered.
"Okay, thanks."
In the examination room, a cold needle pierced my skin, and I felt a shiver run through me. Feeling disconnected, I could only let Nate guide me through the various tests, my mind fighting denial, my emotions numb. He outlined my proposed treatment. When they were finally through, he led me back out into the patient reception area.
"Hey, be careful!" I heard him warn, just as I felt myself begin to sway. Strong arms caught me before I could fall.
"All these tests can be a lot to take. Why don’t you rest a bit before heading home?" he suggested, as he held me steady.
I didn’t have the strength to reply. Before I could even answer, a figure appeared in front of us, roughly pulling me out of Nate’s arms.
Adrian’s angry voice followed. "Evelyn, we just filed for divorce yesterday, and you're already this eager for someone else? What’s the matter with you, will just anybody do?"
Adrian's POVIt was just a little harmless interaction with Vivian. A light-hearted dalliance. What successful man doesn't have eager women hanging around him? I couldn’t understand why Evelyn was making such a big deal out of it.She had always been so obedient as a wife, and I treated her with due affection and care. What could she possibly be unhappy about? Okay, so, if she didn’t like me being around other women, I could easily cut ties with Vivian.“You’re crazy. Do you expect me to stay faithful to you?” Evelyn’s voice was cold, distant.“What —” I was furious. How could she be like this? She was becoming more and more unreasonable.“We’ve already registered for divorce, Adrian. Just six more months, and then we’ll be done for good. Who I chose to see is none of your business,” she said, in sharp tones.“The cooling-off period hasn’t ended yet, so we’re not officially divorced. Evelyn, are you seriously going to put the blame on me?”Evelyn pulled away from the doctor and laughe
Evelyn's POVWhile he knew I was concerned about some health issues and having tests, Adrian still doesn’t know that I have been diagnosed with cancer, and he never bothers to ask how I was doing. My medical issues don’t seem to concern him.I can feel the undercurrent of his anger but what I don’t understand is why he’s so upset? If he’s already chosen Vivian, then why does he care so much about seeing me with Nate? Isn’t our marriage over? We’re now legally separated and just waiting for the final papers to be signed. I know the divorce is inevitable, and honestly, I’m done with Adrian. He can think whatever he wants, but I’m just trying to get everything over with, cleanly and without further conflict.Today, I headed to Liam’s preschool for their open day. It’s a chance for parents to see what their children are learning, to meet the teachers, and to talk with other parents. I’d been planning this day for a while, and I wasn’t going to let the matter of the divorce affect it.But
Evelyn's POVThe two young children are standing together, beside me. Sophie flinched at Liam’s intimidating tone and I wanted to comfort her. Sophie looks at me before turning her attention back to Liam."She’s your mom. Why are you calling her bad?" Sophie sounded confused.I sighed. In Liam’s eyes, I had always been the villain. After what happened yesterday, I had already given up trying to change that."I really like your mom," said Sophie in her sweet little voice. "If you don’t want her, can she be my mom, instead?" Though she was frail, there was an inexplicable warmth about her. I never expected to feel such genuine affection from a child I didn’t even know. Unlike my own family. Unlike Liam — who rejects me. I had given him everything, yet hardly ever received any warmth in return.Liam was clearly unhappy about Sophie’s words. He stepped closer and pushed her forcefully. She might have been older than him, maybe a year older, but as small and delicate as she was, she took
Evelyn's POVThe next day was my mother-in-law, Margot’s, birthday. For six years of marriage, I had always been the one responsible for arranging everything on this day — her gift, the cake, the banquet. Nothing was ever left out. This year was no exception.During dinner, everyone sat around the table, which was covered with high-end dishes — Australian lobster, abalone, deep-sea crab, and other delicious fare.“Evelyn, I heard that you and Adrian are considering having a second child?” Margot asked with a pleasant smile, her tone gentle as she reached out and took the Australian lobster in front of me, placing it onto her own plate.I raised an eyebrow, glanced at her, and calmly took the lobster back. Then, in a steady voice, I replied, “When did I ever say I wanted a second child?”The atmosphere instantly became tense. Sitting beside me, Adrian’s expression darkened. He shot me a fierce glare.“What kind of attitude is that?” Margot’s smile stiffened, and her tone lost its warmt
Evelyn's POVSix years ago, why did we get married?I genuinely loved the proposal Adrian had arranged for me, foolishly believing that his feelings were sincere. It was only after our marriage that I saw the truth. Before we got married, Adrian’s company was just starting out, relying heavily on my family’s investment and resources. His family treated me like a goddess, catering to my every whim. But once the marriage was secure, their attitudes shifted. And now, this. At a lovely dinner I had arranged in Margot’s honor."So what? Now that you’ve married into Adrian’s family, you should learn to stand with us." Margot’s voice was icy.I paused at the door, turned back and looked at her. Margot’s expression was filled with scrutiny.Beside her mother, Isabella crossed her arms, her tone sharp and unyielding. "At the end of the day, you’re just an outsider. You have no say in our family matters."I glanced at the lavish dinner table, suppressing the anger bubbling inside me. "What exac
Evelyn's POVThe next morning, I woke up to see Adrian staring at me with a dark expression. I got out of bed, pulled on a robe, and headed for the kitchen to make some coffee. Adrian was right behind me.“Who gave you permission to go to that bar last night?” he demanded.“I beg your pardon!” I cried. “I don’t need to ask you.”He followed me around the house, berating me. I had to get out. Back in my room, I hastily got dressed and charged out the front door.Adrian followed me outside. “Where do you think you’re going, now?”“Oh, get lost. I’ve got some errands to run,” I countered. I got into my car and drove away. I was headed for the drug store, I had a script to fill, as part of my treatment regimen.I parked, and as I headed for the drug store I saw Adrian’s Cadillac swerving into the parking lot, he was driving like a demon.“Oh, good Lord!” I muttered, feeling really annoyed. On the sidewalk in front of the store entry, he crowded in on me. He reached out to grab my wrist.
Evelyn's POVI raced to the kindergarten, sweat beading on my forehead as I tried to calm my breathing. I was feeling weak, washed out from the domestic conflict, and now this! A dull pain throbbed inside me but I pushed any thought of it aside.I hurried from the parking lot to the foot of the steps leading into the preschool, where I paused to catch my breath. I stopped beside the preschool’s plaque, mounted on a brick plinth. The inscription read: “The Hastings Memorial Kindergarten”.It was well-known that Nicholas Hastings was a generous donor to the school. They had honored his benevolence by awarding him naming rights, and gave him a seat on the board of directors.Rallying, I hurried inside. I found Vivian Brooks and the preschool principal in one of the classrooms, and with them were Liam, and Sophie Hastings. The children were sitting apart, on the mats, and they didn’t look happy.“Ah, Mrs Whitman,” said the principal. “I’m glad you could get here so soon.”Cutting straigh
Evelyn's POVHis cutting tone carried a hint of menace as Nicholas Hastings looked down at the principal. The hypocritical expression on the principal’s face began to crack.Vivian Brooks never expected that what was supposed to embarrass me, would ultimately lead to her own downfall.Turning to Mr. Adams, she tried, "Principal, I—"Nicholas didn’t care to hear the principal’s response. He strode further into the room and scooped Sophie into his arms. The small child looked fragile in his embrace, evoking an aching sense of compassion in me."You got Miss Vivian in trouble! I hate you!" Liam yelled at me, "You have to let Miss Vivian stay, or you can’t be my mother!"I was too focused on Sophie to care about Liam’s demands. Instead, his remark only fueled my anger. I turned to him and said coldly, "You haven’t been my son for a long time. If you want someone else to be your mother, go ahead and choose whoever you like."A thankless child like this? Whoever wants him can have him!Hast
Evelyn’s POVAfter Charlotte left, the whole house became much quieter, and Sophie’s emotional state soon calmed down.“I’m sorry about your clothes being ruined.” Nicholas said. He instructed his housekeeper to bring me a clean set of clothes, and I looked at him in surprise.“You have clothes for me?” I asked, wondering.“Well, I thought it through. Sophie likes you, and if you stay overnight, having a fresh change of clothes would be convenient,” he quickly explained, when he saw my confusion.I smiled vaguely but didn’t say anything further. I went to the guest room to change and was pleased to find the outfit is in my style, a slim-fitting suit that flatters my figure. When I walked back to the living room to join them, I was met with the appreciative gazes of father and daughter.“Miss Evelyn, you look so beautiful!” Sophie’s nosebleed had stopped, and she gave me a generous smile.“I’m sorry, Evelyn,” said Nicholas. “Charlotte has been spoiled by my family and speaks without th
Evelyn’s POVAfter I spent the night not leaving his side, Liam regained some of his energy, looking at me with a pitiful expression. If it had been before, I would have rushed to hug him without a second thought. But… The memory of him pushing me away and shouting, "I don't want a mommy like you," still torments me.He climbed out of bed. "Mom... can you hug me?" Liam pouted, about to cry.I squatted down to his level and looked him in the eyes. "Liam, I'm here. But you need to tell me, why do you suddenly want a hug?"He blurted out, "Because... when I can't breathe, only the food you give me makes me feel better."My heart tugged. He still remembers that. We went down to the kitchen and prepared him a few simple dishes, according to his preferences, and he eagerly ate the meal. After his breakfast, I was about to leave, when Liam grabbed my hand possessively. "Are you going?"I gently held his small hand. "I will always love you. But right now, another sick little child also needs
Evelyn’s POVThe next morning, I awoke in my hotel suite. The sun was shining brightly, and it promised to be a good day. Even though I felt sick, I couldn’t neglect myself. I casually picked out a light blue dress, and it made me look much better — at least I didn’t look so haggard anymore.I went to a café in the city center. The atmosphere was quiet, redolent with a rich coffee aroma. I ordered a latte and leisurely flipped through a book, immersing myself in the rare tranquility.Until I looked up and saw Adrian approaching my table.“I came to find you, but you weren’t there,” Adrian said, his dark circles deep from lack of sleep. “Liam has agreed to eat the prescribed food you make. You know, for his health. Could you come back? Back to us?”I stirred my coffee leisurely, before taking a small sip. “What’s the matter? Is the Whitman family too stingy to hire a nanny?”“You know Liam needs the food you make him.” Adrian sighed tiredly, no doubt exhausted from all the recent t
Evelyn’s POVI went straight to the hospital. Today was Sophie’s last day there, before she would be discharged. When she saw me, her eyes lit up. "Miss Evelyn!""How are you feeling today, Sophie?"She pouted, looking troubled. "I have to take medicine that tastes awful."I gently stroked her hair, unconsciously thinking of Liam. Maybe my son and I really have no karmic bond as mother and child. That thought was so sad.Sophie shared the stories of the past few days with me. I was so absorbed in what she was saying that I didn’t even notice when Nicholas arrived."Daddy!" Sophie cried, her eyes brightening, her smile wide. She stretched out her little hands for a hug. "Miss Evelyn seems upset today, we need to make her feel better."I was surprised by how perceptive the child was, yet still curious enough to ask, "How did you know?"She replied as if it was obvious, "Your eyes are all puffy and red, and you seem sad."My heart tightened. No matter how well I hid it, this little girl
Evelyn's POVLooking at Liam's face, which so much resembled Adrian's, my heart skipped a beat. I crouched down and gently stroked his cheek. "Liam, do you really love Mommy?"He gazed at me with his big blue eyes, full of the innocence of childhood. "Of course, I love you!" Liam paused for a moment, as if trying to consider something, and then kissed me on the cheek. "Liam loves Mommy the most, but why do you and Daddy always shout?"I was momentarily stunned, and before I could respond, Adrian chuckled and ruffled Liam's hair. "Son, Mommy just throws tantrums. Daddy works very hard every day, and Mommy should take care of you and the house, right?"Liam nodded happily. "Daddy works hard, Mommy keeps house. Miss Vivian taught us that family members should help each other."I stared at him, dumbfounded, feeling a deep ache in my heart. Adrian has been coaching him again. The poor little boy doesn’t know the implications of what he has been encouraged to say.Adrian looked at Liam wit
Evelyn's POV"Vivian! Wait!"The nauseating voice came from behind us. Even now, hearing it causes a physical revulsion. Both Vivian and I looked back and saw Adrian running to join us. I was tempted to hail a cab right away but the look on his face made me freeze. What now?Vivian took the opportunity to rush to Adrian's side. Suddenly, her eyes reddened, and her tone changed from harsh to soft and fragile, as she whimpered, "Adrian, I really don’t know what I did to offend Mrs. Whitman. It’s her fault I was fired and this job was very important to me.""Evelyn?" Adrian ignored Vivian's flirtatious whining and focused his cold gaze on me. His tone was icy. "We are husband and wife. Are you trying to ruin me?" he demanded, his eyes filled with rage."Adrian, you've ended up like this through your own actions!" I took a step back, disgusted with him. "Husband and wife? Why didn’t you think about that when you were cheating on me?"Adrian rubbed his temples impatiently, his tone casual
Evelyn's POVSophie needed to stay at the hospital a little longer, so we returned to the car. Nicholas said, “I’ll drop you at your home.”Feeling bitter, I said, “I don’t consider it my home anymore. It’s just somewhere I am staying for the next few months.”Nicholas gave me a searching look. "Are you planning to divorce your husband?"I nodded, my gaze calm and firm. "Yes, Adrian has taken advantage of the situation, and I won’t give him another chance."Six years of marriage have been enough. I’ve already wasted too much time in a loveless marriage. He has even turned my son against me and there was nothing left to go home to."How do you plan to handle it?""He must pay the price!" Now is the time for reckoning. Let him pay back everything!Nicholas looked at me thoughtfully. After a brief pause, he took a business card from his suit pocket and handed it to me. "This lawyer is very experienced and has handled many similar cases. If you want to fight this battle well, I suggest yo
Nicholas's POVI stood aside, watching Evelyn and our daughter together, feeling a strange sense of happiness as she gently comforted Sophie. Her eyes were soft, and her smile was warm. I was inexplicably moved with the urge to tell her the truth — that Sophie is our child.I’ll never regret that night. Even though it was a ridiculous accident, it was still the happiest moment of my life. I’ve always been attracted to Evelyn, even though the one she cared for wasn’t me, even though she had never truly seen me. I couldn’t help but fall for her.But what I didn’t expect was that when we met again, she had forgotten about us. More cruelly, she had forgotten that she had a daughter. As Evelyn was reaching for an extra pillow for Sophie, she tripped and nearly fell. I instinctively rushed over and steadied her. "Be careful. Are you okay?"She froze for a moment, clearly startled by my reaction. I eased my grip on her, making sure not to let her fall."I'm... fine..." She had scraped her ar
