Evelyn's POV

While he knew I was concerned about some health  issues and having tests, Adrian still doesn’t know that I have been diagnosed with cancer, and he never bothers to ask how I was doing. My medical issues don’t seem to concern him.

I can feel the undercurrent of his anger but what I don’t understand is why he’s so upset? If he’s already chosen Vivian, then why does he care so much about seeing me with Nate? Isn’t our marriage over?

We’re now legally separated and just waiting for the final papers to be signed. I know the divorce is inevitable, and honestly, I’m done with Adrian. He can think whatever he wants, but I’m just trying to get everything over with, cleanly and without further conflict.

Today, I headed to Liam’s preschool for their open day. It’s a chance for parents to see what their children are learning, to meet the teachers, and to talk with other parents. I’d been planning this day for a while, and I wasn’t going to let the matter of the divorce affect it.

But something has shifted in my relationship with Liam. As we sit together in the car, there’s an unsettling silence between us. I try to start a conversation, but he shuts me down. Our talks have often been strained, mostly over rules like not letting him have too many unhealthy snacks. I knew he hated that. He always shouted at me when I enforced the rules and it would break my heart. He was too young to understand that I just wanted to do what was best for him.

As we arrive at the preschool, Liam hops out of the car without a word, practically avoiding me, as if I’m contagious. I’m becoming accustomed to this coldness, but it stings to see other parents interact so warmly with their children.

After greeting a few familiar faces, I make my way into the classroom. That’s when I see him. A man, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, steps into my view. The setting sun casts a golden glow across his face, highlighting his sharp features. His eyes scan the crowd, and when they land on me, I freeze.

My mind goes blank. Something stirs in my chest, something long buried. Without warning, an intense pain explodes in my head.

Why does he affect me this way? Is it because he’s connected to memories that I’ve tried to smother?

"Are you okay?" he asks.

His voice is deep, smooth, and there’s an edge of concern in it. He walks toward me, and the pain intensifies, making me stagger. I try to step back but lose my balance, and I feel myself falling. Before I can hit the ground, a strong hand grabs my arm, steadying me. The scent of wood and musk wraps around me, and I feel an odd sense of urgency, like my whole world is tilting.

I look up into the serious brown eyes of Nicholas Hastings.  His gaze is alive with an unreadable expression. He sat down beside me, and beside him I noticed a little girl. She is delicate and frail-looking, wearing a princess dress and holding a Barbie doll. She looks at me with large, sad eyes, as deep and blue as the ocean.

Why does she look so weak? My heart tightens with a surprising feeling of protectiveness.

The little girl smiles at me, and I feel a rush of emotions — compassion, sorrow, something I can’t name. I’m lost in thought as Nicholas is talking, but I can’t focus on him. My attention is completely on this little girl. She looks healthy enough at first glance, but why do I sense she is so unwell? Nicholas helps me get back up on my feet. I mumble a thank-you and quickly press past him.

As the event ends, I’m preparing to leave with Liam, when I feel a tug on my skirt. I turn around to find that little girl, her voice soft, almost too quiet to hear.

"Mommy…?”

My heart skips a beat, and Ireach out to her, gently brushing her hair back. "Sweetie, I’m not your mommy. You must be confused."

Her big eyes fill with tears, and she shakes her head, her voice trembling. "Mommy…"

“What is your name, sweetheart,” I ask.

“Sophie,” she whispers.

Where’s her father? I look around. Nicholas Hastings has moved away, and now he’s talking to the kindergarten principal. He glances over and sees Sophie and I still together. He doesn’t make a move, just turns back to finish his conversation. Doesn’t he care that a stranger is with his child?

Taking a deep breath, I prepare to comfort the sad little girl. She reaches for my  hand but I feel Liam’s hand push hers away.

"Why are  you calling her, Mommy?" he demands, his voice edged with anger. "You stay away from her! She’s bad."

I freeze, looking at Liam, his face full of distrust. The words hit me harder than they should.

Evelyn's POVThe two young children are standing together, beside me. Sophie flinched at Liam’s intimidating tone and I wanted to comfort her. Sophie looks at me before turning her attention back to Liam."She’s your mom. Why are you calling her bad?" Sophie sounded confused.I sighed. In Liam’s eyes, I had always been the villain. After what happened yesterday, I had already given up trying to change that."I really like your mom," said Sophie in her sweet little voice. "If you don’t want her, can she be my mom, instead?" Though she was frail, there was an inexplicable warmth about her. I never expected to feel such genuine affection from a child I didn’t even know. Unlike my own family. Unlike Liam — who rejects me. I had given him everything, yet hardly ever received any warmth in return.Liam was clearly unhappy about Sophie’s words. He stepped closer and pushed her forcefully. She might have been older than him, maybe a year older, but as small and delicate as she was, she took

Evelyn's POVThe next day was my mother-in-law, Margot’s, birthday. For six years of marriage, I had always been the one responsible for arranging everything on this day — her gift, the cake, the banquet. Nothing was ever left out. This year was no exception.During dinner, everyone sat around the table, which was covered with high-end dishes — Australian lobster, abalone, deep-sea crab, and other delicious fare.“Evelyn, I heard that you and Adrian are considering having a second child?” Margot asked with a pleasant smile, her tone gentle as she reached out and took the Australian lobster in front of me, placing it onto her own plate.I raised an eyebrow, glanced at her, and calmly took the lobster back. Then, in a steady voice, I replied, “When did I ever say I wanted a second child?”The atmosphere instantly became tense. Sitting beside me, Adrian’s expression darkened. He shot me a fierce glare.“What kind of attitude is that?” Margot’s smile stiffened, and her tone lost its warmt

Evelyn's POVSix years ago, why did we get married?I genuinely loved the proposal Adrian had arranged for me, foolishly believing that his feelings were sincere. It was only after our marriage that I saw the truth. Before we got married, Adrian’s company was just starting out, relying heavily on my family’s investment and resources. His family treated me like a goddess, catering to my every whim. But once the marriage was secure, their attitudes shifted. And now, this. At a lovely dinner I had arranged in Margot’s honor."So what? Now that you’ve married into Adrian’s family, you should learn to stand with us." Margot’s voice was icy.I paused at the door, turned back and looked at her. Margot’s expression was filled with scrutiny.Beside her mother, Isabella crossed her arms, her tone sharp and unyielding. "At the end of the day, you’re just an outsider. You have no say in our family matters."I glanced at the lavish dinner table, suppressing the anger bubbling inside me. "What exac

Adrian was right behind me.“Who gave you permission to go to that bar last night?” he demanded.“I beg your pardon!” I cried. “I don’t need to ask you.”He followed me around the house, berating me. I had to get out. Back in my room, I hastily got dressed and charged out the front door.Adrian followed me outside. “Where do you think you’re going, now?”“Oh, get lost. I was headed for the drug store, I had a script to fill, as part of my treatment regimen.I parked, and as I headed for the drug store I saw Adrian’s Cadillac swerving into the parking lot, he was driving like a demon.“Oh, good Lord!” I muttered, feeling really annoyed. On the sidewalk in front of the store entry, he crowded in on me. Evelyn's POVI raced to the kindergarten, sweat beading on my forehead as I tried to calm my breathing. I was feeling weak, washed out from the domestic conflict, and now this! A dull pain throbbed inside me but I pushed any thought of it aside.I hurried from the parking lot to the foot of the steps leading into the preschool, where I paused to catch my breath. I stopped beside the preschool’s plaque, mounted on a brick plinth. The inscription read: “The Hastings Memorial Kindergarten”.It was well-known that Nicholas Hastings was a generous donor to the school. They had honored his benevolence by awarding him naming rights, and gave him a seat on the board of directors.Rallying, I hurried inside. I found Vivian Brooks and the preschool principal in one of the classrooms, and with them were Liam, and Sophie Hastings. The children were sitting apart, on the mats, and they didn’t look happy.“Ah, Mrs Whitman,” said the principal. “I’m glad you could get here so soon.”Cutting straigh

Evelyn’s POVAfter Charlotte left, the whole house became much quieter, and Sophie’s emotional state soon calmed down.“I’m sorry about your clothes being ruined.” Nicholas said. He instructed his housekeeper to bring me a clean set of clothes, and I looked at him in surprise.“You have clothes for me?” I asked, wondering.“Well, I thought it through. Sophie likes you, and if you stay overnight, having a fresh change of clothes would be convenient,” he quickly explained, when he saw my confusion.I smiled vaguely but didn’t say anything further. Evelyn’s POVAfter I spent the night not leaving his side, Liam regained some of his energy, looking at me with a pitiful expression. If it had been before, I would have rushed to hug him without a second thought. But… The memory of him pushing me away and shouting, "I don't want a mommy like you," still torments me.He climbed out of bed. "Mom... can you hug me?" Liam pouted, about to cry.I squatted down to his level and looked him in the eyes. "Liam, I'm here. But you need to tell me, why do you suddenly want a hug?"He blurted out, "Because... when I can't breathe, only the food you give me makes me feel better."My heart tugged. He still remembers that. We went down to the kitchen and prepared him a few simple dishes, according to his preferences, and he eagerly ate the meal. After his breakfast, I was about to leave, when Liam grabbed my hand possessively. "Are you going?"I gently held his small hand. "I will always love you. But right now, another sick little child also needs

Evelyn’s POVThe next morning, I awoke in my hotel suite. The sun was shining brightly, and it promised to be a good day. Even though I felt sick, I couldn’t neglect myself. I casually picked out a light blue dress, and it made me look much better — at least I didn’t look so haggard anymore.I went to a café in the city center. The atmosphere was quiet, redolent with a rich coffee aroma. I ordered a latte and leisurely flipped through a book, immersing myself in the rare tranquility.Until I looked up and saw Adrian approaching my table.“I came to find you, but you weren’t there,” Adrian said, his dark circles deep from lack of sleep. “Liam has agreed to eat the prescribed food you make. You know, for his health. Could you come back? Back to us?”I stirred my coffee leisurely, before taking a small sip. “What’s the matter? Is the Whitman family too stingy to hire a nanny?”“You know Liam needs the food you make him.” Adrian sighed tiredly, no doubt exhausted from all the recent t

Evelyn’s POVI went straight to the hospital. Today was Sophie’s last day there, before she would be discharged. When she saw me, her eyes lit up. "Miss Evelyn!""How are you feeling today, Sophie?"She pouted, looking troubled. "I have to take medicine that tastes awful."I gently stroked her hair, unconsciously thinking of Liam. Maybe my son and I really have no karmic bond as mother and child. That thought was so sad.Sophie shared the stories of the past few days with me. I was so absorbed in what she was saying that I didn’t even notice when Nicholas arrived."Daddy!" Sophie cried, her eyes brightening, her smile wide. She stretched out her little hands for a hug. "Miss Evelyn seems upset today, we need to make her feel better."I was surprised by how perceptive the child was, yet still curious enough to ask, "How did you know?"She replied as if it was obvious, "Your eyes are all puffy and red, and you seem sad."My heart tightened. "Liam, do you really love Mommy?"He gazed at me with his big blue eyes, full of the innocence of childhood. "Of course, I love you!" Liam paused for a moment, as if trying to consider something, and then kissed me on the cheek. "Liam loves Mommy the most, but why do you and Daddy always shout?"I was momentarily stunned, and before I could respond, Adrian chuckled and ruffled Liam's hair. "Son, Mommy just throws tantrums. Daddy works very hard every day, and Mommy should take care of you and the house, right?"Liam nodded happily. "Daddy works hard, Mommy keeps house. Miss Vivian taught us that family members should help each other."I stared at him, dumbfounded, feeling a deep ache in my heart. Adrian has been coaching him again.
