Chapter 3

Siri had a favorite bodyguard who was also his chauffer. This kind, tall and strong man, in his early 40s, was extremely fond of the young master of the house and he would be the one to let the heir of the Thanawat Enterprises sneak out at odd times. Tonight, was no different. Although it was rather awkward considering the heir had just taken the marital vows, this man, Chati, had seen enough of life to know when to question and when not to. Tonight, he had silently driven the young master to a worn down building in a not-so-friendly part of Bangkok and stayed guard until Siri had made his way back nearly four hours later. It was not a new place for Chati. The young master had visited this building and a particular apartment in this building countless times and by now the bodyguard had all the details not only regarding a particular resident but also regarding all the residents and businesses in the area. It was the way he worked and it was the only way he knew to do his job perfectly. Tonight though, something felt not right and Chati did a little prayer for the safety and happiness of his young charge, who had now snuck past the gates of the mansion.

Siri, wearing Pai’s black hoodie over his dress-shirt, took one last glance at his watch and sighed in relief when it was only few minutes past four am. He had made it just in time. The entire household and help, especially the kitchen staff, would be stirring awake by five am. The young master slowly unlocked the front doors that led to the huge hallway. He moved inside and softly latched the door back closed. He took off his shoes and tiptoed towards the huge stairwell that would lead to his newly renovated bedroom. He involuntarily flinched as he thought of his new wife who was in his room, probably very angry and wondering where her husband had gone off to.

Siri was just about to climb up the first stair when he was startled with the light being switched on. The young man froze, his one leg still mid-air when a hoarse voice spoke,

“Sneaking out on a wedding night doesn’t suit a Thanawat heir…”

Siri swallowed hard as he turned around to face the only woman he had ever respected and even loved. His grandma, the one who basically managed the entire business in the background, sat there on the cushioned couch, with a steaming cup of tea in one hand. The young man’s eyes dropped guiltily, although he had no regrets of what he had done. He was only feeling upset that his actions might have made the old matriarch concerned. It was not like Siri’s dad or this woman sitting in-front of him didn’t know his heart. The young man had been honest, brutally so, from the moment the talk of his marriage had been raised.

“Come have some tea with me.” It was never a request or a question, it was an order and Siri didn’t mistake it for anything else. He moved quietly to sit opposite his grandmother, fiddling his hands, never once looking up at the woman.

The lady leaned forward, pinched the young man’s chin and forced him to look up into her eyes. “You met up with that dirty rat, didn’t you? No wonder you stink!”

In an instant, Siri’s eyes stormed over with rage. It was one thing to not let him meet his Pai, but it was completely different to insult him.

“NANA!” Siri couldn’t control his outburst. He was not someone to act out because of his emotions or challenge his family in order to get his way. He had always been taught to speak frankly and have calm negotiation, not unlike a business deal. But when his grandma insulted his Pai, he had snapped. This woman knew everything, she had listened when Siri had talked. She knew how Siri felt about Pai, she knew her grandson was incapable of loving anyone else. Siri had thought his nana understood and if the circumstances had been different, she would have supported them. But this anger she had expressed tonight was something unexpected.

The two didn’t know how long they were glaring at each other, but the silence was broken when the lady abruptly stood up and started walking in the direction that Siri knew would lead them the study. It was the only soundproof room on this floor of the mansion and it looked like Siri was up for a loud confrontation. The young man followed the old woman without a single word as he awaited his repercussions.

If one passed Mrs. Ratana Thanawat on the street, one would dismiss her as any other average loving old woman. But this woman was anything but that. The matriarch commanded the entire household and the vast business empire created by her late husband. The woman's knowledge and power were greater than what anyone could ever dream of. She ordered thousands of people, influential people at that, with a flick of her fingers. Her ability to be sweet and polite when the occasion demanded and to transform into this boss of a lady who never took no for an answer, was what made this woman what she was. Her chubby face and stodgy frame were misleading. The emotions in her golden-brown eyes changed according what she wanted to convey. Although she lacked a few inches when it came to average height of women in the country, she easily towered over both women and men in stature and command. However, many who met her at her party easily mistook her as only a friendly hostess. But now as she

“Then why didn’t he fight for you?” The words hit Siri in the heart like a sharp knife and he involuntarily took a shocked step back. This woman in front of him was one of the three people Siri respected in the whole world. He had not expected his grandma to say this. This is why he was confused when his grandma started insulting his lover. This was absolutely out of the blue and it angered Siri to no end. What did this woman expect Pai to do? With who Siri is, Pai had done the only thing he could do, right? Right?Siri was glaring hard at the woman, whose eyes were nothing but challenging.Siri was seething from within, “That’s not fair..”Mrs. Thanawat tilted her head to the side, watching her grandson quiver with anger, “What’s not fair? Huh, Siri? What’s not fair?”“We did, he made a..we ..I had obligation and Pai..”Grandma snorted,

He looked up earnestly, his eyes tear-filled and red, “Nana. I trust you! Trust you with my life. You are ..you have been everything to me all my life! Why didn’t you say anything? Nana..I..”“Why did I have to? Why should I have? You are the one who chose the easy way out..” Hearing the words Siri stood up abruptly, once again feeling the anger rising inside of him. His heart was barely holding it together, the pain was actually physical and the most important woman in his life thought everything was a joke?“Easy? Easy?...There is nothing easy about this, believe me Nana! Nothing at all..”“Is that so? Or maybe you just took the chance to break things off with that man..Good for you the

Siri had been up since five am this morning, scrambling around his files on his laptop as he proceeded to remember every little detail regarding the presentation he was to make this afternoon. This project was being handled by his father since the beginning but his Nana had suddenly decided to hand it over to him a week ago. It was the morning after his wedding, when after the talk in the study his Nana had laid out detailed rules for him and handed him this project. He now had to convince potential investors to contribute for the capital so that Thanawat Enterprises could launch their newest and smartest home automation system. The talk in the study had really frazzled Siri from within. It was that day that the young heir had fully understood the enigma he lovingly called Nana. It felt like even after so many years, he had only scratched the surface of what Ratana Thanawat meant. At the end of the talk though, Siri could only surrender to his grandma and her greater wisdom.

Pai had just finished his second shift at the diner and was returning to his apartment when he noticed a long black unmarked limousine parked outside the building. All the residents were peering through their windows curiously. Some had even come out to stare and gossip about the car and who it was meant for. Pai may have been surprised by such a flashy car being in his dingy neighborhood but being the aloof one, he was not interested in such trivia. He had work to catch anyway. He worked nights at 7/11 around the corner and if he stays and chatted he would definitely be late. However, as he walked further, the back door of the car opened, blocking his way. Pai still didn’t think anything of it and was about to go around the door when a posh voice stopped him.“Get in,” the woman said. That’s when Pai leaned in to see an old classily dressed woman gesturing him to take a seat beside her. The young man had no idea who this was or why she would ask him t

Ratana Thanawat felt a soft smile spread on her face as she watched her grandson elegantly greet all the guests gathered at the mansion for a party to celebrate the production of company’s newest home automation system. Boonsri, slim and sophisticated, stood beside Siri in her classy lilac one-shoulder dress. From afar, they did look good together and she knew many of her guests might be jealous. But only the three of them knew the truth, not even Siri’s dad had been included. It had been almost three weeks and she had seen the young man work diligently for this project and also other assignments. Her grandson thought he was being subtle, but nothing had ever missed the matriarch’s eyes. She knew her conditions, one condition in particular, had been driving Siri to the brink. Her grandson was prolonging coming home, he didn’t want to relax his mind in the least so as to not let it wander. The lady’s eyes overcame with sadness. She could see from

The black limo was once again parked in front of his apartment building, but this time Pai didn’t hesitate. He just opened the back door himself and took a seat beside the old woman. The fact that Siri’s Nana had sought him out again for some reason didn’t even surprise him. After the first meeting, Pai had a feeling that there was a lot of unfinished business between them. This time when Pai bowed, the woman nodded in acknowledgement. The car started, “You are on leave tonight. I already talked to your manager.”“Uhh?”“We have things to discuss and I believe it will take a lot longer than 20 minutes.”Pai swallowed, but gave a small nod. One day of missing work won’t hurt. The rest of the ride was silent. When Pai and grandma Thanawat got out of the car, he realized they were at a small mom-n-pop restaurant. Surprisingly, it was completely empty, except for a middle-aged man and an old w

“It’s past 2:00 am Master. You should leave now and get some rest,” Chati said as he entered Siri’s office, without knocking. He was pushing a small tray-table, which had a bowl of steaming chicken-noodle-basil soup. The bulky man made some space on his Master’s table and placed the soup there.“Eat, master, and then I will take you home.”Siri watched the man, took off his glasses but didn’t make any effort to eat or get out of his chair. He just closed his eyes, leaned back on the chair and sighed.“Master..please, you have to eat something. This is one of your favorites,” Chati said as he pulled Siri out of the chair. Of all the people around Siri, he was the only one who could do something like this and not get reprimanded for it. The security chief pushed the young man towards the bathroom and asked him to quickly freshen up. When Siri came out, he sat down on his chair and reluctantly took a spoon

The older man was clutching and pulling at Siri's shirt, in what looked like an attempt to unbutton it. However, with the ministrations of Siri's talented mouth, Pai felt unable to do anything, except melt in the strong arms of the man he truly loved. The two lovers had just come back to their tiny apartment, after having a rather pleasant dinner with Nana and Siri's father. They had decided that Pai will be working side by side with Siri, and will be introduced as the chief marketing strategist for the company. This will entail that he works closely with the top management of the company and hopefully keep suspicions and questions at bay. However, as Nana had pointed out, these things were just a matter of time and would eventually just fade away. The announcement of Pai's

This was a huge deal as it would make Thanawat Enterprises the top producer of Smartphones in the country. The deal will also give the company access to major market share in China, which in turn will lead to several more contracts.Pai was standing in one corner of the room watching the elation that the rest of the employees were freely displaying. The deal had involved departments from all three offices and it was only natural that the employees were happy that their hard work had paid off. He couldn’t help but grin when Pai opened a bottle of pink-milk for himself. As had become a routine, the two lovers were relaxing in their respective bedrooms, video-calling and just catching up on each-other’s day. Siri had ensured he visited Pai at least once a month in the past eight months.Things were progressing rather smoothly on both their ends. Siri and Nana were working swiftly to end the marriage and also have that Chinese contract finalized. Siri had not been seen with his wife in almost seven months now. He dumped back on his chair and enjoyed the happiness that was bubbling in his chest right now.A lot had happened in the past two months. After that emotional talk, the three people in the room decided to take a break. While Grandma went to freshen up, the two lovers hugged, seeking comfort in each other’s arms. They found that after the clear support from Nana, both their hearts had somehow calmed down. Their whole beings seemed to have relaxed and there was hope bubbling within them. The happiness that the lovers felt at the acceptance from the old lady was palpable throughout the house.Siri decided that they should have something to eat as he knew his grandma does not prefer eating any takeaways. Her meals are specially made at the house. It was also one of the reasons why she did not stay away from home for long. The two lovers set about making some eggs and toast, refiling the tea and setting the table. It was a little while later that Nana joined them at the table. She took a bite of her eggs, smiling. She had had an early morning and hadn’t eaten on the plane.“Thank you

Nana said, “All I wanted to do was to ensure that your life-partner was capable enough to stand and support you in the position that you inevitably be in. Whoever it would be must be at that level, an equal, a backbone to you. I am only making sure of this. My actions towards Pai would have been the same six months back, as they are today.” It had now dawned on Siri and Pai that Nana was truly doing things as she had seen fit and it was clear that her intentions were to ensure that her grandson could have a happy life with his chosen partner. Mrs. Thanawat was looking at the two men expectantly. It was Siri who cleared his throat, “Nana, I ..I didn’t understand..I..but why didn’t you let us keep in touch? Maybe if we had talked regularly, I would have seen your plans, instead of being so deep into my own issues and drowning in worry ..” Nana nodded as she sipped her tea, “Well, yes. As had become their routine by now, Pai was preparing to go to work while Siri was setting up his laptop at the dining table after finishing their breakfast. Siri approached Pai to say goodbye when the doorbell rang. A visitor at this time was unexpected, in fact at any time was unexpected since the two young men had preferred to keep it to themselves. Whatever small errands had to be done were managed by Chati as Pai and Siri mostly laid low without drawing much attention to themselves.Pai frowned questioningly even as he went to open the front door. The sight of the classily dressed woman on the other side of door startled Pai, so much so that he stood stunned and forgot his basic manners. It was clear that Pai had not really expected the Thanawat matriarch to visit them in person but more importantly, he had not believed that Siri’s stance would pay off. Of course, it was yet to see if any of the younger man’s claims would be accepted but at least they had for

“No..I’m not coming back..yeah, I know….I sent you an email after the last time we talked..” Siri said as he paced around the bedroom, talking on the phone. Pai couldn’t help but sigh as he entered the room with a two cups of tea. He knew who Siri was talking and what this whole thing was about. It was not like this was the first time this conversation had happened in the past fifteen days. Frankly, Pai didn’t think Siri would succeed in what he was trying to achieve, not immediately anyway.“I already explained what I want. I don’t care where he has to live or where he’s working from. That absolutely not the point! I don’t expect you null my marriage and welcome him as partner right away! What are you even saying! My stand is perfectly reasonable and practical.” Siri said, his tone slightly higher, as he felt whatever was being said at the other end getting on his nerves.“Nooo, we can talk

“You look good, Pai. All the best!” Siri said as he straightened Pai’s collar smiling. Pai blushed slightly, now color clearly visible in his cheeks, as he nodded. Siri placed a firm kiss of Pai’s forehead before letting him go and see him to the door.Pai made a shy wave as the younger man said, “I will pick you up in the evening…” And just like that the Pai was off to his first day as a full-time employee at Chiang Mai office of Thanawat Enterprises. In the past twelve days, Pai had recovered completely. Aroon had visited just once, to say goodbye. He had successfully completed his internship and had told Pai that he had decided to take a job closer to home as his parents had wanted him to. Pai had been supportive and had wished him luck. Siri too had wished the young man all the best and bid him goodbye.
