THE SMALL town of Cape Cod in Chatham, Massachusetts, was in preparation for Saturday-the one Saturday before Halloween which would mark exactly seven days to Halloween and Jake and his pals passed by the place where the event would be held in less than two days from then.
"Man, I cannot wait for Pumpkin People in the Park!" Gabriel was saying as they watched pumpkins get unloaded from trucks and into warehouses.
The popular multiday event would have contestants come up with creative pumpkin displays which they could pose before they met the judges on the main 'Oktoberfest' event.
"Still not into it, huh?" Matt spoke after noticing Jake's head shake a little in disapproval.
"I donno about you, man," Gabriel added, referring to Jake, "but I know this year's Halloween will be super awesome!"
Jake's mind drifted off for a moment as his Halloween-bedazzled friends went on chattering about the event and that's when he noticed a hooded figure brush past him.
The weird thing was that Jake felt an eerie feeling the same moment that figure moved past. Stopping, Jake turned instinctively.
The hooded figure also stopped, giving Jake some time to notice the long ragged robes that the figure was wearing. The face was concealed by some sort of cloak.
For what seemed like a pretty intense moment, Jake found himself frozen, unable to move as the figure's head began to rise. Slowly.
Jake felt his heart pound as everything else had fallen silent. He could not even hear his friends anymore. It was like he had been flushed away from the world or the other way around.
Any moment now and he would see who was underneath the cloak...
"Jake!"
He unfroze and found himself being yanked back by two arms as a huge truck drove past, blowing dust as it disappeared down the road from the warehouse.
"What's wrong with you?" Matt asked.
"You didn't see that truck coming?" Gabriel chimed in, "you could've been roadkill!"
"I...I'm fine, just a little..." Jake replied, passing a hand through his short dark hair before turning to the direction where the strange figure stood, "...tired."
There was no one there. The figure was gone.
"I think I'm gonna head home, now."
"Probably," Gabriel responded, fishing out his phone which was buzzing.
"It's not even dark out yet, mom!" he spoke.
"No, sorry, I won't talk back to you again!"
This went on for a while as Jake and Matt stood there awkwardly waiting for their counterpart to end the seemingly endless phone conversation with his mother.
Until he did.
"Sorry, guys, " Gabriel said after hanging up, "she does that everytime!"
"Your mom knows you're in highschool, right?" Matt asked with sarcasm.
"I'm pretty sure she'll be packing my lunch when I go to college," Gabriel replied with annoyance.
Jake walked into his place several minutes after parting with his friends who lived a few blocks away where he was met by a kid wearing a weird mask that freaked him out, causing him to almost hit the back of his head on the door behind him.
"Jesus, Ryan!"
"Gotcha! You pussy!"
"Woah, you better watch your tone, young man," came Jake's dad from the kitchen.
"What? It's not my fault Jake's such a wuss!"
Ryan Fowler. Of all things the universe did to Jake. He just had to have that psychotic excuse for a brother-sorry to say.
Five years younger than Jake, Ryan had always managed to ruin his life in everything that he did. Hell! One time he even stole his assignments and shredded them, claiming it was an accident and of course, mom and dad believed him.
Who the fuck does that?
Okay, maybe Halloween was just the next bad thing after Ryan and not the other way around.
Jake thought as he turned to go to his room.
Having had dinner with the family, with Jake's mom coming home just before the meal from her journalism job in the town which to Jake seemed like a lot of work, considering how much story one could get from Cape Cod and that's why she was the best reporter there could be. He had told her that several times and Elizabeth Fowler could not have been more proud to have a son like Jake...and Ryan, the latter confusing Jake all the while as he thought:
I think I serve very well as two brothers! You just had to have him too!
Jake's surprise of how his parents put up with his brother never seemed to end, though at times he knew he could detect that they'd wanted to have a girl after him.
Jake lay on his bed, staring at the blank ceiling and for a moment, he almost thought about Nicole Parsons. He wasn't sure whether it was a crush because he reacted like that to every other girl in school but it kinda felt different towards...
There was a sudden breaking of glass as his bedroom window shattered, interrupting his thoughts and making him quickly spring out of bed.
The impact was not that great with only a little jagged opening from the window through which Jake caught the disappearing figure of a boy.
Wondering what had hit the window, Jake's answer came immediately after he saw what appeared to be a bird strewn on the floor with shards of glass from the window.
He almost jumped, realising who had done this and just a minute later, heard the sound of his brother's door close shut.
'What an idiot!'
A bird? Are you kidding me?
Yap, that was the level of crazy his brother was.
"DUDE, WHERE were you?" started Matt after Jake entered the hall. There were other students seated all across the large hall which was designed to serve the purpose of a theater and Jake faltered a little when his eyes met Nicole's, who was sitting two rows behind where he was.She smiled slightly, causing Jake to react by quickly turning his head down and then back to Matt all the while feeling his face flush."Oh, I just had to pass through the library.""Well, you're just in time for the play," came Gabriel, who happened to be writing something.Jake sat next to Matt with Gabriel on the other side as Mrs. Fenway, the music and drama teacher walked in and ordered all students to be quiet."Now, today we're going to venture into the world of fantasy...""What is this, Hogwarts?" joked Cole from the middle row as a low clatter of laughter followed.
"BREAKFAST'S READY!" came Jake's mom from the kitchen.Jake appeared from his room and headed to the dining table where he met his dad who was filling a mug with coffee. He gave his dad a 'what the hell is going on' look."Don't look at me, I had nothing to do with this," his dad responded before taking a sip from his mug.Jake's mom had prepared some pancakes, okay...a lot of pancakes; croissants; eggs, which came in scrambled, beaten and even a few pouched ones; bacon and sausages.Jake grabbed a pancake just as his mother returned from the kitchen with more pancakes."Wow, you were up early..." began Jake."What? Can't a mother cook for her family?"Jake's mom grinned widely and took off her apron and had on a black skirt topped with a white blouse."Where's the party?" Jake's dad spoke this time."Well
SUNDAY FOUND Jake going out shopping at the supermarket which was mostly done by his mom but she got called in again for another exclusive.Yap, that week was going to be a pretty busy one for her, with five days left to Halloween. He was feeling rather off that day, considering what had happened the previous night—if it had even happened in the first place!Passing through a section lined up with groceries; mostly oranges, apples, asparagus and peaches, Jake almost hit another guy's shopping cart who was coming from the opposite direction.“Sorry.”“No problem, kid.”A canned tomato soup container then fell down his cart as Jake stopped to pick it up.“Hey, you dropped your...”There was no one there. The section was quite long, surely he couldn't have gone that fast.
PACKING HIS school stuff, Jake's eyes landed on the big black book still lying on top of his desk even after wishing that it had been all a dream when he got up from bed that Monday. He did have a dream but not one about witnessing some guy’s head pop open like the pumpkins at the Pumpkin Park after being run over by a truck. Nope. That also happened. He saw it on the news the previous night while his mother let out a long speech about how dangerous that part of town is and another flow of words of how she was glad that Jake was okay.Oh, mom, you're just the best...Back to the actual dream, Jake had found himself standing at the Pumpkin Park and it was dark out, the silvery wave of light from the full moon being the only thing that enabled him to see. There was nobody in sightHe felt something tugging at his right arm only to look down and find the book in his hand.
HE WATCHED her smile at him. Oh, how she had such a pretty smile with her short dark blonde hair and those wide brown eyes. She was in a ‘Pocahontas’ costume, a black weather with a white tip sticking out at the back of her hair which kind of confused him. Why was she dressed like that? She approached him slowly and he could feel her warm breath causing his face to flush but he felt different this time. He felt confident. She touched his hand, making him to look down and could see the shadow cast on the ground where there was a picture of a lion’s head—Barnstable High School logo. He savoured the moment, raising his head to look into her eyes which sparkled under the moonlight. He noticed the small white reflection of the moon in her eyes begin to loose its color and darken. The moon began to turn red and the warm feeling in him waned and was replaced by fear and terror. The ground beneath him was shaking, shaking slowly then

Gabriel finished, "you could've done better than that.""Yeah," Julia chimed in, siding with Gabriel, "like making him drink out of the toilet."Gabriel chuckled, hitting Julia's open palm with his own."You know I'm seating next to you, right?" Matt asked sarcastically, raising his brows at his sister."Oh, I'm sorry," Julia added, raising her hand and exposing her palm to Matt."So, how about we try that hypno thing you so claim you d

J A K E' S P A R E N T S left home early on the thirty-first of October, ahead of the Oktoberfest event that was about to start in a couple of hours.Having fallen asleep on the desk, Jake awoke with a start and found the book resting on his spread out arms, with the last page being open.He had gone through the entire book and was then getting a pretty stiff neck.He leaned back in his chair before turning to his phone and checking the time.07:12Closing the book, Jake walked up to the door and opened it after which he headed towards the kitchen and passed by his brother. He waited for Ryan to step on him. He didn't, which was really weird. His brother never screwed up such an opportunity to torment him."Ryan," he called.Jake watched as his brother stopped, facing the other way.
