I had no other option. "My sister. I can't leave her. She's in Sablestone." I rushed my words hoping to get them all out before she could refute.

She released her hold from my chin and exhaled, "Why didn't you just say so, my dear? We can make sure she's amply taken care of. After all, you'd be a princess and a princess' family should be pampered as well."

It was an intriguing premise....my sister and I could trade the servant's life for one of nobility. However, my father had always instructed me: 'don't take what's not yours.'

I knelt, my forehead touching the ground and I pleaded. "Please forgive me, your Majesty. My sister's still young…"

Once again the cackling emitted from the queen's mouth as she bellowed, "You don't need to apologize to me, my dear, but I'm sure these young ladies will want one after I'm done with them.

The Luna Queen shifted into her wolf form, the shade of dark charcoal. Her emerald eyes bore through the slits of her eyelids. She pivoted her head and sharply turned it at Emma, raising her left paw, slicing with her talons at the innocent girl's throat.

Immediately, Chelsea shrieked at a harrowing decibel and took off running towards the entryway. The queen even taunted, giving her a few seconds' head start, and then darted over the princess' powder-white bedspread, tearing it to shreds with her talons, and lunged over the king sized bed in one leap.

She pinned Chelsea down, the wolf's canines boring down on the girl's collarbone, as Chelsea clawed at the door, leaving scratch marks that remained as an imprint in the wood.

Connie turned towards the window, and as she attempted to open it, the queen had already sliced the back of her neck and blood splattered onto me and the windowpane.

The midnight black wolf rotated its head ninety degrees and focused its eyes slits directly on me. Surely, I was next.

However, before I could close my eyes and say goodbye to the world, the queen shifted back, her body completely naked, except for a few blood-splattered garments of her crimson-colored dress plastered to her skin.

She waltzed forward, her pupils level and her smile flat.

"Now," the Luna Queen tilted her head slightly toward me, "Is that enough to convince you to marry the prince?"

Tremoring with horror, I stared at her, and it felt like my entire being was no longer mine. However, I managed to nod my head.

"Good. Let's get you dressed."

***

"Since you ruined the princess' dress," she paused as she flicked a splotch of blood off her finger, "this'll have to do."

She clapped twice, and her attendant reappeared in the room, holding a platinum diamond-encrusted ball gown with floral lace across the chest line.

"I'll be back to fetch you in thirty minutes. My attendant will fix you up," she commanded as I held the change of clothes brought by her attendant. She pierced her heel into Emma, stepping on top of the maid's lifeless chest as if it was a stepping stool.

Before she exited the room, the queen arched her head back around towards me and declared, "Don't mess this up. Your sister's life depends on it."

I flinched at the click of the door.

Outside the windows, nobles from Hoarfrost were arriving. A cavalcade of black Mclarens rolled up the brick-laded split driveway leading up to the palace's main entrance.

However, there wasn't time to watch the arriving guests. My head would be served on a platter if I was the reason there wasn't a princess at the treaty dinner.

I recollected my strength and ran into the shower. As the hot water ran down my skin, the gory scene finally settled in, and I could no longer hold my dry heave back.

By the time I was done cleaning myself, the queen's attendant had been standing by the vanity, waiting for me.

I sat down on the stool and she ordered, "Close your eyes."

I immediately obeyed her and in no time, she started working on me.

She was an extension of the queen herself and showed no emotion, no compassion, and no concern. Her job was to make me look like a princess. That was it.

I felt her brushing over the scratch on my cheek that was left by Miss Verla, and then she went on to work on the rest of my face. However, it didn't seem to take long for her at all.

Next, she let my waist-length brunette curly hair fall, maybe trying to decide on the best style. I'd always liked my hair. It was naturally beautiful, coffee bean-colored locks that had a satiny finish. I believed for the sake of time, she kept it that way except for sorting out some knots.

When I heard her voice again, she seemed satisfied with her work. "Open now."

In the mirror, I couldn't recognize myself.

My face was only lightly manicured, allowing a natural and healthy glow to radiate off my skin. The scratch mark was cleverly covered, and no one would be able to tell it was ever there.

A slightly glittery eyeshadow could be seen above my long eyelashes, highlighting my turquoise eyes, and my pink lips looked healthy and soft with the colorless lipstick giving it a natural shine. My brunette curls cascaded down like waterfalls. But, most importantly, I looked like a princess.

Elegant, radiant, and chic.

I was stunned by the beauty in the mirror. The makeup was minimal: some foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, and blush. But otherwise, this face was mine. I'd never taken the time to appreciate it before.

"Now put this on," the queen's attendant instructed.

I stepped into the platinum evening gown that the queen had previously picked out as a replacement. It fit me perfectly. It was as if it had been personally tailored just for me.

The sound of knuckles violently rapped on the door. Time was up and the queen had returned. She was dressed in a fresh blood-orange gown reminiscent of the massacre here.

She approached the vanity leisurely, taking her time to survey me. Her fingernails bore into my chin as she grabbed at my jawline to rotate my face so she could see every detail, every angle.

"You know why I picked you?" Queen Regina questioned, as she whispered into my lobe, making contact with my eyes through the vanity mirror. It looked like she was ready to gnaw off my ear.

I vigorously shook my head 'no.'

"Because you know not to disappoint me," she praised as she straightened her body. "Now let's go."

The queen yanked my wrist, nearly pulling my shoulder out of its socket. This time she lunged over the bodies of Emma and Chelsea like they were minor inconveniences, careful not to get her feet bloody. I followed her motion without direction.

"You learn quickly, my dear," she commended, seemingly pleased with my progress to follow orders. I tilted my head back to look at my fellow maids on the ground, but the queen sensed my motion and declared, "You're a princess now, remember? You don't concern yourself with lowlifes anymore. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Your Majesty," I responded hastily.

She looked at her personal attendant and ordered, "Clean this all up and find a new head maid. Someone less bothersome."

She paused and continued with a tone that was icy cold, "Also, make sure everyone in the palace keeps their mouth shut. I don't want to hear a word about rumors of Iris or Amber. Understand?"

Her attendant nodded as we left the room, closing the door behind us.

As I approached the base of the grand entryway, the queen released her constricted grasp on my forearm and subtly pushed me in front of her.

I noticed a few maids dressed in navy blue skirts and white blouses, with long, draping indigo bow ties around their necks, presumably accompanying Hoarfrost's nobility.

They all straightened and remained silent as the queen and I passed. They bowed their respects, and the queen gave them a steely glare.

The queen, still shadowing my every step, muttered, "I hate enemies in my home," and grumbled in displeasure.

We turned the corner towards the hall of mirrors, and at the end was the main dining hall with two fortress-like golden doors held open by a couple of servants waiting for our entrance.

The hall was otherwise empty but it felt like an echo chamber. I quickly glanced at the mirrors to see my appearance, but each reflection looked like an abstract hallucination, like this wasn't my reality.

Reaching the floor-to-ceiling golden entryway, chandeliers blinded me as the crystals reflected the light into my pupils. The scent of the finest cuts of meat and aged wines filled my nose, twisting my intestines.

At this moment, the last thing I wanted to do was eat. A haze filled the air with steam rising off of the silver platters, however, my eyes still were scarred from the sight of dead bodies.

Two empty wood-carved chairs, that resembled thrones, glared back at me, one for me, and one for Prince August of Hoarfrost. I bowed gently as I passed the Hoarfrost nobles and high-ranking officers and they returned a muted smile as I cascaded by. Their expressions were confident and seemingly pleased at the spread in front of them.

As I tucked myself into my throne, it was obvious there was someone missing from the table.

The prince.

However, I was physically and emotionally too exhausted to be worried about anything else other than not making mistakes.

This day was a horrendous nightmare and all I wanted was for it to end.

All of a sudden, the mumbles and chatter at the table quieted down and everyone at the table, mostly elite Hoarfrost and Sablestone high-ranking officials, shifted their position towards the door as surely the prince was near.

Someone gulped as the clicking sounds from the heels of dress shoes gradually loudened, and the chandelier flickered as the doors began opening.

A rush of frigid air entered the room and my nose inhaled a scent of evergreen, like from the forests in the northern part of our continent, Astana.

The cold air halted and everyone waited to release their breath. I saw a shadow cast over the table as light entered from the hallway. A vivid outline of a defined face entered into my view.

Prince August had arrived.

He looked around and immediately identified the empty seat next to me. I swallowed as he started moving my way. Now that he was in the room, I could see him clearly. His hair was midnight black and wavy and his eyebrows dark like charcoal. A muted scar ran from the peak of his right eyebrow and ran through his perfectly shaped nose. His jawline was rigid with a five-o-clock shadow. Then I caught myself staring at his lips—they were plump and elegantly shaped, however, what drew my attention was their color. And with that, the peace treaty was surely over.Everyone at the table gasped as Prince Leonardo strode out of the dining hall, but nobody, not even Queen Regina, dared to stop the prince in his tracks. The man I presumed to be the prince's Beta ran out after him in a frenzy. The queen's venomous green eyes pierced directly at me. I tried to avoid her eye contact, but I felt her gaze puncture my forehead.Someone would need to pay the price for ruining the dinner and I had no doubt that someone would be me.My heart sank and I couldn't breathe.I was useless to the queen, and I might have also become the reason that resulted in the end of my sister's life. I sat there stunned and I couldn't even pay attention to people murmuring around me.Why did he reject me? Did he know I wasn't the real princess? Was I not elegant enough for his liking? What did I do wrong?I couldn't understand this whirlwind of emotions, this chaos of anxiety.I was scared of the prince, but wh

t the crack of dawn, a piercing knock hit the princess' door, and without hesitation, the queen's personal attendant, the one sheathed in a black pantsuit, marched in aggressively with orders from the queen."Every day at 6 am I'll be doing your makeup. You're to assume the role of Princess Iris. Your life as you once knew it, as a maid, doesn't exist anymore."I was caught off guard. If that was the case, Princess Iris would never be returning?"Now, as Your Majesty mentioned, you have two weeks. These two weeks you may spend as you like," the queen's attendant added, "Whether you want to enjoy your time indulging in all the exquisite delicacies available to a princess, you may do that, but just know your decisions have unwavering consequences if the prince doesn't accept the engagement."As if I could…if only my and my sister's lives weren't in my hands!"Understood," I acknowledged. There were no other instructions given to me. "There you go, your Highness. You're all cleaned up. There's no damage at all," Reina, Hoarfrost's resident nurse, reassured. I nodded my appreciation, a gesture it seemed Reina was not accustomed to.After that, Dylan walked me to my room. The early morning sky was a pinkish hue and pierced strongly into the white palace hall."The sun is beautiful here," Dylan pointed out, adding, "Up north, everyone's just a bit more tense and cool towards each other. You've been a great ambassador for your pack, your Highness."Dylan looked down shyly towards the marble tile as his cheeks flushed the color of the evening sky. I didn't want him to get the wrong idea and I added, "Thank you, Dylan. I appreciate your acquaintanceship." "Oh, so that's what we're calling it now?" Dylan released a light laugh. "Up north we just call it the friendzone." This time he rubbed the back of his neck and shook his head as he exhaled."I-I'm sorry but I don't under–" Before I

It took a few trials to perfect the recipe, but I think I finally did the northern dish justice. A Hoarfrost territory specialty: roasted duck over red curry.Looking down at the dish I prepared, I felt a wave of confidence for the first time. The duck breast was glazed in an herbal marinade, directly sourced from the palace's gardens, and was roasted to perfection. The curry was thick, but just rightly so, and the steaming potatoes in the sauce were golden brown.I carried the dish under a silver platter which struggled to keep the steam in. I walked up the all too familiar marble staircase, this time in a dignified light-blue gown that graced my ankles, and powder-white flats, perfect for the airy spring day. When I arrived at the prince's door, I was surprised, albeit relieved, to hear his Beta in there again.Dylan seemed to be Prince Leonardo's polar opposite. He was respectful, kind, and warm even to me–the supposed enemy. Maybe he didn't see me as a threat.I kno

In an anxiously timid voice, I apologized, "Prince Leonardo, I'm so so so sorry for–" My words were interrupted."Save the apology. You could never hurt me," he spoke in a deep, indifferent tone. Dylan rushed up to us in haste. "Your Highness, are you alright? How's your head? Did you blackout? You need to see Reina! There could be internal bleeding. Let me take you upstairs right now!" His words spewed out frantically, and he was more worried than I was."I'm totally fine, I can go up by myself," I assured, but Dylan had already extended his hand.Prince Leonardo's eyes narrowed at the sight. A slight growl released as he shifted his glance back at his Beta who didn't seem to get the hint.I caught the action."What are you waiting for, Your Highness?" Dylan directed at me, but I could feel the prince's scowl. I managed to remake the roasted duck and red curry to the same quality as last time, but I had the maids prepare the rest of the side dishes and carry out the tableware. I arrived right before sundown and put a little too much effort into my outfit and makeup. That was the hopeful part of me still alive. I brought the leather holster that I embroidered for the prince and placed it in the middle of the table setting. There was the slightest breeze whirling off the gentle creek, and it enlivened my spirit which was rather downtrodden and depleted recently. The ends of my hair pulled tightly in a high ponytail, brushed against my face in the wind as a reminder that I was human, not a princess without consequence.I smoothed my long, silken magenta gown and tucked it carefully under my thighs, as my legs extended in front of me, the princess' cream-colored Chanel espadrilles peeking out at the end of the dress.Whether or not the prince came tonight, my mind was finall

He offered a small smile before he added, "And you?""Actually, that's what I came up here for. Do you know where the prince is?" I asked, the nerves building in my stomach."Oh, Alpha, he's going to be gone for about a week or so on a military expedition down here. **Amber's POVI watched Leo training in our newly landscaped garden. We'd purchased a nice estate in the Redrime countryside adjacent to the lake and it was so nice spending time in the peace and quiet of our own property. He'd put a punching bag up in a huge oak tree. I smiled, wrapping my arms around my barely swollen belly. It was so hot out, and pregnancy hormones weren't helping, so most days I just wore a flowing skirt and an oversized t-shirt.I'd told Leo, once the baby was born, that punching bag would have to be replaced with a tire swing. "Hey, you two! I'm ready!" Maia shouted out the back door. I cringed slightly at her shrill voice. The house was supposed to be for Leo, me, and the baby but Maia didn't want to go back to her father or August. I mean, I couldn't exactly blame her for that. I wouldn't want to go back either. It was hard finding privacy with her always hanging around. Not that I minded too much. It was nice to have a "little sister" by my sid

**Amber's POVLeo checked us all in at a hotel across the Redrime border and luckily there weren't any roadblocks, figuratively or literally, along the way. We had cleaned ourselves up at a rest stop during our travels to look presentable in the case we were stopped, but we never were.Leo had caught up to us a few miles outside the compound, and at that point Leo decided that we ditch the Porsche and rented a large SUV that we could all fit in. Leo wasn't bothered by losing his personal car in the process if it meant we'd all be safe.I was beyond relieved that he was alive and had found us, and thankfully our mate bond helped keep me abreast regarding his condition the whole time. The point I worried most was when it seemed he would have killed August had I not reached out to stop him from losing control.Placing my hand on my stomach, I realized that it wasn't just me that needed Leo anymore. Our future child did too.I sat down on the edge of one of the beds in our hot

**Leonardo POVDylan informed me via mindlink that Amber and Maia were safe. His message relieved the angst that was coursing through me. Now, it was just between me and my pathetic half brother."I thought you wanted to kill me. Here's your chance," I taunted, pointing around to show there was no one in his way.August licked his lips. "Ready when you are," he announced and shifted. I hadn't seen his all white wolf form in years since he never had the need to fight. I followed suit and shifted. Immediately, like the cocky a*shole he was, he jumped forward and tried to slice at my snout. He failed miserably. I stood firmly in place and swiped at his abdomen, deciding to take it easy on him for the time being.August reeled back, his paws sliding around on the hardwood floor. He was unable to gain sure footing, but I waited for him to come to me. All his talk about how he'd kill me the moment I refused to hand over Amber, and now that he had the chance, he couldn't do i

**Leonardo POVI looked outside of the window again, not seeing one of my soldiers in sight. We had been completely overrun in the surprise attack. Now, the most I could hope for now was to give Amber and Maia enough time to get far away from the compound. The howls from battle seemed to die down and the whole atmosphere became eerily quiet. I looked over at Dylan who shook his head at me. He didn't know what to expect either. Then, suddenly, a door at the end of the hall burst open and August waltzed in with a smug smile plastered across his face as he walked towards us. I noticed that he didn't have a spec of blood on him. No wounds, no tears in his clothes. I doubted he'd done any of the fighting up until this point. He always left the dirty work for someone else."Is this what you imagined for your wedding night?" August asked snidely, confirming my suspicions about his plans to interrupt it all along. I glared back at him without responding. I was sick and tired of that

**Leonardo POVI told him once before, if he wanted Amber, it would be over my dead body. "How many wolves does he have with him?" I asked Dylan."Uh… his whole army, it seems," Dylan informed, still panting to catch his breath. He took a seat in a chair beside the bed to regain his energy. As if it was planned, the night exploded with harsh howls in the near distance as my brother's wolves closed in on the compound. "F*ck him," I spat. I knew about my father's plan to throw me out of the pack, but I didn't expect to be expelled with hostility. I had no interest in staying around my father or brother anymore. It didn't need to come to this, but it seemed like my brother wanted to ruin me, take Amber, and cause as much destruction as possible. People said I was the bloodhound, but I guess they never met him."Leo, it's not good. Most of the Torflora soldiers are already down. August snuck up, took us by surprise," Dylan reported. I looked quickly around the compound, but I couldn't find her," Maia reported. "I'm sorry, Leo. I said I would keep an eye on her." I heard Maia whimpering on the other end. I wasn't going to blame Maia for losing track of Amber. I handed her off to my little sister and that decision was mine and mine only. "I'm going to find her. You alert security, discreetly. I don't want to scare her," I ordered."Leo, what is going on?" Maia asked with a concerned tone. "That's not for you to know," I answered coolly. Maia argued, "Why not? She's my sister now too!" I asked. I went to her. I raised a hand, reaching for her, then quickly dropped it. "She killed her. She killed my sister," Amber sobbed. Her legs gave out and she slid to the floor, sobbing into her hands. In my chest, my heart split. I could feel her sadness through the mate bond. I gripped my own chest, heart heavy as an anvil, threatening to break my ribs. I should have been mad at her. I should have been furious. She'd been willing to poison me at the Luna Queen's request.
