Lena's POV
I couldn’t stop smiling. This was everything I’d ever dreamed of. The fancy gala, the people, the prestige. My parents were sitting proudly in the front row, watching me like I was the crown jewel. And tonight, I was. The Reynolds family, once modest and humble, was now a top-tier name, thanks to me, Lena Reynolds, soon to be Lena Wells. “Lena, the board is already discussing the upcoming mergers,” my father said, his voice filled with pride. “Grant has done wonders for the company, but now that you're engaged, we’re seeing even bigger deals come through.” I nodded, trying to suppress my grin. “Everything’s falling into place, Dad. This is just the beginning.” My mother, Barbara, chimed in, her eyes sparkling with excitement. She'd always been a party lover. “You’ve made us so proud, darling. And that ring,” she said, taking my hand, "it’s stunning.” I smiled and touched the diamond ring on my finger. It sparkled under the lights. Everything was perfect. Until Verena appeared. “Well, well, well, I hope I didn't break this little family chat” Verena’s voice was shrill, just like I'd always known her. She sauntered over to the circle, her lips curled into a mocking sneer. “If it isn’t the woman of the hour. Did you really think I wouldn’t find out?” I blinked. “Excuse me?” Verena scoffed at my surprise. “Oh, come on, Lena, don't play dumb now. You must’ve known this wouldn’t stay hidden forever.” “What are you talking about?” I’d always known Verena didn’t like me, but to confront me here, now, on my big night? That was low, even for her. My mum folded her arms. “Verena, don’t you have anything better to do than try to ruin your son’s happiness? Get a life.” Verena snickered. “Oh, Barbara, sweet naive Barbara. You honestly think Grant’s going to marry her?” Then she leaned closer and whispered to my mother, “Never, just watch." Before I could respond, I saw him — Grant Wells. CEO of the Wells family and my husband to be. He’d just walked into the hall, tall and commanding, looking every bit the man I’d fallen in love with. Relief washed over me. I was about to greet him when his eyes locked onto mine. But instead of the warmth I expected, there was fury. Grant didn’t stop. He didn’t smile. He didn’t even acknowledge me. He grabbed a folder from his personal assistant and then yanked me to the corner, his grip tight. “Grant, what are you—” I started, but the look in his eyes silenced me. “Explain this, now.” he growled, throwing a stack of pictures at me. I looked down, my heart racing. There I was, in one photo shaking hands with a rival company’s executive, and in another, sitting with one of Grant’s closest friends in a restaurant. Dressed in a low cut red dress, his hands on the small of my back. “Grant, no, this isn’t what it looks like! I swear” Shut up,” he snapped, his voice ice-cold. “I should've known better,” he shook his head like I was a total disappointment. "I should have known you were a gold-digging snake, just like the rest. Was this your plan all along? Get close to me, use me to climb the social ladder, and then stab me in the back?” Tears stung my eyes. “Grant, what are you talking about? They're people looking,” I tried to calm him as I saw the cameras begin to flash. “Don’t lie to me, Lena!” he barked, unfazed by the crowd. “I’m done with this charade. I’m done with you.” He turned, marching toward the stage. My heart pounded in my chest as I rushed after him. “Grant, please, don't do this!” I was lost, confused and nearly having a heart attack. But it was too late. He grabbed the microphone, silencing the crowd. “Everyone, I have an announcement to make,” he said, his voice chillingly calm. “The engagement is off.” The room went still. I froze, unable to breathe. “I’m not marrying a liar and a cheat,” he continued. “Lena Reynolds is nothing but a gold digger, a fraud, and a whore.” Gasps echoed around the room, cameras flashing. My heart shattered into a thousand pieces. “No,” I whispered, stepping forward, reaching out to him. “Grant, please, this isn’t true. Someone is trying to ruin us. Let me explain—” “Explain?” He scoffed, “I've seen all I need to. I don't need any more of your lies, Lena.” Grant tossed the microphone away and marched off, leaving me with the crowd, the flashing lights and the nosey journalists in my face. My worst nightmare was playing out. I couldn't believe my eyes. As if I hadn't had enough, Verena stepped in. “Take off the ring,” she hissed sharply. “You don’t deserve it.” I stared at her, my vision blurry with unshed tears. “What?” “The ring. Now.” Verena smirked, stretching her palms. “You heard my son, the wedding is off. There's no way I'm letting a leech like you keep the diamond ring.” “Mother-in-law please, just let me explain! I didn’t do any of this. It’s a misunderstanding.” “Don't you ever!" She snapped in my face, “Ever! Call me that again. The Reynolds family could never get tangled with the Wells. Did you really think you would weasel your way into his life while still being a whore and a bloody backstabber? Conniving with a rival company, how low of you!" I shook my head, the tears of trying so hard to hold finally falling freely. Streaking down my face. Ruining my makeup. "Take it off, Lena. Don't make me call the security.” My fingers trembled as I reached for the ring. My entire world was crashing down around me, and Grant was letting it happen. My mother stepped in, trying to intervene. “Verena, please. My daughter would never do that.” “Stay out of it, Barbara,” Verena snapped. “After all, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.” My parents, once so proud, now stood in shock and disappointment, their faces pale and horrified. Mom, dad, I didn’t… I didn’t do any of this. You have to believe me.” But they didn’t respond. They just stood there, defeated. I pulled the ring off, my hands shaking, and placed it in Verena’s outstretched palm. She smiled cruelly, turning to the crowd. The Wells family will never mix with charlatans,” she laughed. I staggered, grabbed my purse and fled the gala.Lena’s POV“Lena, that went incredibly well,” Damien’s voice was full of pride as he walked beside me, matching my pace. I smiled, still riding high from the successful meeting. “It did. The Asian market is tough to break into, but we nailed it.” “You won them over without even trying hard,” Damien said with a grin. “How could they not sign the deal? You were brilliant in there.” I smiled. Damien wasn't economical with his compliments. I shrugged, smiling. “That’s what I’m here for.”His eyes seemed to sparkle as he glanced at me. “Speaking of which… How about we celebrate tonight? Dinner? You know, something to unwind.”I swallowed and paused. “Damien, I appreciate the offer, but I’ve got a lot of unfinished work on my desk to think about something else. ”He chuckled softly, not backing down. “Come on, Lena. You work too hard. You need to let loose sometimes. What harm could a dinner do?”“I’m sorry,” I replied, my voice firm. “I’m not ready for such distractions just yet. We sti
Lena's POV I walked into the office the next morning with a straight face. The kiss with Damien never happened. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself. This was business, nothing else. Quietly, I sat at my desk, flipping through the papers from yesterday’s meeting. There was a knock.“Miss. Reynolds?” It was Grant’s secretary, holding a file in her hands and wearing that annoyingly polite smile.I didn’t look up. “What is it?”“Mr. Wells asked me to deliver the final draft of the contract. He’s very eager to hear back from you.”I sighed, finally glancing at her. “Tell Mr. Well, that I’m not interested in the partnership.”Her smile faltered. “But, Ms. Reynolds, this deal is very beneficial—”“I’m not inclined to take any business advice from you, missy,” I cut her off with a stern voice. “Now, unless you have something else, I suggest you leave.”The secretary blinked, taken aback, then she gave a tight nod. “Very well, I’ll let him know.”As she walked out, I sighed. This wa
Lena’s POV The next morning, I woke up with a splitting headache. I was on the couch with a blanket over me, pretty warm. I grabbed my phone from the table, a series of missed calls and messages on my phone, most of them from Damien. Why was my phone on silent? “Grant!” I snapped, crossing my arms. “Why did you put my phone on silent? Why didn’t you tell me Damien was trying to reach me last night?”Grant was casually sipping his coffee, scrolling through his phone like everything was normal. “Oh, that? I didn’t think it was important. Besides, you looked too exhausted to take calls.”I stared at him in disbelief. “Are you serious? It wasn’t your decision to make, Grant! I would’ve taken his calls.”“Would you?” he smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Look, Lena, you were half asleep by the time you had that coffee. There was no way you were talking to anyone coherently. I did you a favor.”I clenched my fists. “I don’t need your favors, Grant! Damien’s calls were my business, not
Lena's POV “We knew you'd do the right thing, honey.” Those were my mother's words, and they have haunted me since yesterday. As I stepped into my office, Damien was already there, leaning against my desk, his arms crossed and his expression stiff.Damien rarely looked pissed. Today, he was furious. His gaze was fixed on me. "So, it's true?My heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"Don't play dumb, Lena. I know about the partnership with Grant Wells."I flinched. "Damien, How did you know that?He shrugged, his jaw clenched. "I have my resources. You think you can just agree to something like that and keep me in the dark?"I sighed, my head dropping slightly. "Damien, this is for my family. I didn’t expect you to understand.""Oh, I understand, alright." His voice was sharp, almost accusing. "You’re making a deal with him for your family after refusing to take the deal for Mega Hawke, do you have any idea how that looks?”It’s not like that!" I shot back. "It’s…it’s comp
Lena's POVI stood there, staring at Damien, who was now kneeling down in front of me full of hope. My heart raced. There were several onlookers and most of them had their phones out with their lenses trained on me, ready to capture what they thought would be a great moment. But all I felt was chaos and guilt in my heart.“Lena,” Damien started and, for the first time, he almost pleaded, “I know things have been rough. But, I love you and do not want to lose you. Will you marry me? Let us pack up everything and start over.”As he said this, I could feel the heat rising from my neck to my cheeks as everyone held their breath. The scene of Damien proposing was something straight out of a fairy-tale, the kind of fairy-tale every little girl dreams about. And yet, here I was, so bitterly disappointed, because deep down I already knew the truth. I knew what happened last night and Damien would never know. He didn't know my mistakes, the structure of the agreement I had signed, the trust I
Lena's POVHe turned over, inhaling terribly with the effort of collecting himself again. After what felt like an eternity, he looked at me again in silence, his face giving away nothing.“Right now, I need a little bit of time to process this,” he said in a low voice. “Lena, this is not something in my life I can pretend has occurred and then go on with my life. It is a massive game-changer.”I understood and hated the helplessness that incurred seeking anything further and nodded. “I comprehended. Take all the time you require."Damien nodded once before turning away and exiting the room, leaving me standing there. An unbearable pain rose in my chest and I stood there, knowing all too well that I might have just lost the one person who cared for me.I walked back to my office somewhat in a daze and was hardly cognizant of my environment. On my desk was a message from Grant.Grant: Dinner? Let’s meet tonight. We have things to discuss.Willing myself to calm down was of no use as I i
Lena's POV I averted my gaze, embarrassed. “Because I thought I would be able to manage it myself. I didn’t want you to think of me as a pathetic person who needed to be rescued. I believed I was strong enough to handle it all, but I was mistaken. I hurt you, and I hurt myself.”Damien let out a long sigh and stared at his palms. “Lena, I appreciate that there was pressure on you, but I need you to know that it is not true. There is no need for you to bear the burden all by yourself. I wanted to help you… if only you allowed me to.”It was a moment of stillness, and I felt my eyes begin to get watery. “I understand, and I apologize so much. If it were possible, I would turn back the clock and act in a different manner. While I do not ask you to simply let it slide, I wish you to understand that I am motivated to compensate you in any way I can, as best as possible.”He breathed out, if only to soften that rigid look a little in what seemed to be a pitying way. “Lena… I am not sure th
Lena's POV That night, I laid on the bed thinking about the series of events that had transpired over the past weeks. No, I was aware that I could not alter history, but I could envisage a better tomorrow. And that tomorrow had no place for Grant or anyone else for that matter. In the morning, I woke up resolved. I was going to show Damien and, more importantly, myself that I could be a worthy person without him. And even if it proved to be the hardest thing to do, I was going to go out there and fight for him, for us.Damien entered my office, an envelope in hand, ready to take over. I was so entrenched in work, trying to organize several bits and pieces into place, that I hardly noticed him. He coughed politely, my attention diverted from my work, and when I looked up, he was right beside my desk with an unreadable look on his face.“Lena,” he began, after a moment’s silence, and extended the envelope to me. “This was delivered this morning. It is an invitation for an awards gala.
Gants POV It was warm and golden in the dining room; a chandelier threw its warm light across the polished mahogany table. The vast expanse of it was excessive for just three placed settings as it had always been-opulent, formal, and cold, like the house itself. As I stepped into the dining room, all eyes fell on me. Sitting with a glass of red wine, poised yet again, she was Cassidy. Blonde hair lit up by light framed delicate features, and the smile, that turned out to be a sunny one upon seeing me, was shown. The same smile she used to have when she used to disarm me, but this time, it got on my nerves."You just made it," my mother said as she walked in from the other side of the great room. She gestures toward the seat laden across from Cassidy. I didn't sit down. Instead, I stood, arms crossed, at the head of the table, surveying the scene with irritation and exhaustion. "I thought Cassidy was going to leave."The smile on Cassidy's face faltered momentarily but was back on ag
Grant's POVTo begin with, at this hour, the hotel lobby seemed pretty quiet; one could hardly hear the hustle and bustle typical of a morning. Following some steps back was my assistant, Elliot, who seemed so much tied to his clipboard. All this was like a heavy weight in my chest, matching the tension in my stride, each step leading away from Lena. I did not turn back into the room, no turning around on the memories, and certainly not even to the ache I was doing everything I could to suppress.Elliot swayed slightly above the entrance before he spoke, aware that he shouldn't be much of a bother with his voice taking caution. "Are you sure you do not want to bid Lena goodbye?"I clenched my jaws tighter, the question rattling more than I would want to let on. My fingers creaked the leather handle of my suitcase under the weight of pressure. "What's the point?" I said gruffly without looking at him. "It's done. She has made her decision." Elliot took offense and held up his pace fo
Lena's POVI stood on the curb clutching my bag handles tightly and watching the morning sun ignite a golden hue all over the city. Beside me stood Damien, tall and composed, though he was scanning my face as if searching for some treasure that, honestly, I don't think I could ever give him. He had a steady bearing; a kind of quiet observer with a mind as sharp as possible with a knack for problem-solving. But this one, he couldn't solve no matter how badly he wanted to."Lena," Damien started, his voice low and steady. "You don't have to do this at all. Walk away for now, sure. But running away entirely? That's not you."He tilted his head so that I could meet his stare. My heart ached with all that concern etched into his features. Damien was my rock in everything, yet he couldn't understand the weight of my decision. It was not merely about leaving Grant; it was about everything I had previously attached to my identity."Running away isn't what I'm doing, Damien," I said softly, th
Lena's POV Oh, great unbelievable silence that is thick and suffocating, under our broad and stretching between us. I could feel the warmth of his gaze on me, the desperate creeping into all of his movements, touching my hand again, but I pulled it away before he could have. ""Lena," he breathed, his voice barely audible now, emotions raw. "I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted this. Please, don't do this."My silent refusal matched the tears bubbling within me. This was the kind of thing I hated. That it had come to be like this. But there was no denying the reality. Everything he did-everything that I had come to learn about him-had put me in a different set-up. Changed me as an individual from viewing him, from viewing myself, too."Grant, I can't live all my life in the shadows, wondering if what people say is not true. I deserve more; I deserve the truth, and I deserve someone who can be honest to me, someone who will not keep secrets.”His face twisted in pain, and for a
Lena's POV "I can’t keep living in the shadows, Grant. I can’t keep wondering if everything I’ve been told is a lie. I deserve more than that. I deserve the truth, and I deserve someone who can be honest with me, someone who doesn’t keep secrets."His face twisted in pain and for a moment seemed so vulnerable to me, so broken, that I was almost tempted to lower my defenses. Almost. But the strength I had found in myself during the last few days, the clarity that had come in learning to see the truth for what it was, held me firm. I couldn't let him back in. There was no basis to what we had created: everything was built on the flimsy foundation of half-truths and lies. Not when the price of trusting him again would cost me my peace of mind, dignity, and self-respect."I'm sorry, Grant," I whispered, almost choking with all the emotion floating between us. "But this is it."Grant was standing there, frozen, and the weight of my words was now sinking into him like stones being let down
Lena's POV I stared at him, trying to decode what he might mean. There was something in that voice, something raw that I had never heard before. As if he was breaking the walls which always kept me at a distance. But at the same time, that thought did not vanish from the chest."I am not asking for immediate forgiveness," he continued. "Though I want you to know that for everything I did, all has been for us. For you. For this." He gestured between us, his hand trembling slightly. "I never intended to harm you. I swear."For one moment, everything that I could do was stand and look at him, trying to read his expression. His sincerity seemed real as it was dissected into parts, but that in no way kept him from hiding something. The gap between his words and those documents in my hand was too wide to be bridged just by an apology."I don't know what to believe anymore," I murmured, the words escaping before I could stop them. "I don't think I can trust you anymore."Grant's face crumpl
Lena's POV The truth had already started unwinding. The pieces of the puzzle were scattered and despite my good attempts to fix them, they did not fit in a way that made sense.By the time I reached my apartment, it felt as though the weight of the folder was sheer unbearable, as if the papers inside really pressed down on me with the force of all the things I had avoided. I placed it on the kitchen counter, but even now, it was as if it was still in my hands, the aura of its presence lingering in the air around me taunting me with the decisions that I had to make.I paced, trying to clear my mind, but the thoughts came faster now. What had Grant been hiding? What was he really capable of? And Damien… Could I trust him? Could he really be the one to expose Grant for who he truly was, or was he just using my vulnerability to get what he wanted?Frustration built as I ran a hand through my hair. Obviously, the evidence Damien had given me would not be something ignore-worthy. Irrespect
Lena's POV Now, instead of the warm cocoon of his embrace, it pressed down the storm raging in me. No matter how much I wanted to believe him, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. Grant's heartbeat pulsed steadily against my ear, and it sounded too calm for the seriousness of our discussion. I pulled back a little to look up at him."How will you prove it?" I whispered. His eyes met mine, their intensity unwavering. "I’ll show you everything, Lena. My business, my finances, whatever it takes to put your mind at ease."It was indeed a daring promise - one that perhaps not many would easily make. Yet, it still could not wipe off the last ember of doubt in my heart concerning this issue. His willingness to be open seemed very convincing, but it also sounded like an act, like he had prepared himself too well for this moment."Okay," I said hollowly. "But I need time, Grant, to think about everything."He nodded back, almost instantly softening his expression. "Take as l
Lena's POVI just got inside the hotel lobby. My mind turned into a maelstrom of thoughts and doubts. The jewel-encrusted chandeliers above me and the shiny marble floors turned surreal, even seeming to mock the chaos inside of me. People passed and flowed on around me, completely ignorant of the storm raging within me. Laughter, hum from casual conversations, clicks of heels on polished floors-it just all flew by me.I had to find Grant. But how was I supposed to start? Damien's words became shadows on every one of my thoughts. What if Grant, with all his idealism and balance, was masking something infamously dark? It was unbelievable. I couldn't, but I knew better than to be thought reckless in ignoring the possibility.I gingerly pressed the elevator button as my hands trembled. Upon seeing the open doors, I stepped in and leaned back against the mirrored wall, staring at my own reflection. My face appeared pale, my eyes drawn. It was only another mark on the lines and expressions
