Elina
At the end of the day, I leave quickly to head home and then go to Iris’s house to talk to Raina, her sister. I get home and park in the driveway; I hear yelling coming from my house. I walk up to the house slowly.
“You told me you would break it, Noime.” An unfamiliar male voice booms through the house.
“ I’m working on it.”
“ It’s been six years, and you still haven’t done it. How can I trust it get done in two weeks?”
“ I’m working on it, Alavic, and I don’t appreciate you coming to my house yelling.” Alavic? Xavier's uncles and the current Alpha of Xavier pack. Why is he here, and why is he talking to my mother?
“His wolf recognizes her as his queen...” he says those words, and suddenly the words Xavier spoke earlier flash in my head. I freeze; this is about Xavier and me.
“ His wolf will reject any mate that isn’t her. Break it or be fine prepared to sacrifice your daughter.”
“No!!!!!! That’s my only child; you will not take her away from me.”
“Then break the bond!” He shouts. I hear footsteps coming towards the door; I hurry down the steps and hide behind the shrubs. Alavic comes out of my house and slams the door. He walks down the steps and sniffs; he looks in my direction but doesn’t say anything. He turns and walks away. Once he’s out of sight, I come out of hiding. Xavier wolf recognizes me because of some bond we have. A bond mom had to break six years ago? When I was 11...then that dream when I was 11 was probably not a dream but a memory. I need to speak to mom I need to know the truth. I march up the steps to my house. I walk through the door and make my way to the living room.
“Mom…” I shout, which makes her jumps
“Ah, Elina, why are you home so early?” She looks exhausted, I want to ask her, to know the truth but I can’t. If she has been trying to break it for six years, that means she’s probably tried everything she can think of. If she knows I know I about it, make her worry more than she is already doing right now.
“I missed you. Do you want me to make dinner?”She smiles as stands to hug me,
“My precious baby, what would I ever do without you?” I grin and hug her tightly.
“You’ll never have to know.” She pulls away and strokes my face gently.
“Yeah, I’m going to rest; sweetie, call me if any customers show up.”I nod as she walks away. She runs a veterinarian hospital in the building next door. It’s more a hospital for all things supernatural, but the town locals occasionally bring their pets. I sigh; it would have helped me find out what the bond is, but I can’t ask mom right now. Hopefully, Raina will have some answers. I pull out my phone to text Iris letting her know I’ll be over later. I head to the kitchen to prepare dinner. I was hungry for some more pasta, so I figure I would make lasagna. I pull out the ingredients and start cooking. Three hours later, after the lasagna finished baking, I call Mom; Dad is the town lawyer, so he comes home a bit later. He walks through the door as I set the table.
“Hey, sweetie.”
“Hi daddy, how was work?” I say with a grin I am a daddy’s girl through and through. We go fishing on the weekends or play baseball; he’s my favorite man in the world.
“Same old, same old, something smells good.”
“ I cooked lasagna.” He grins and pinches my cheek.
“I can’t wait to dig in; let me go wash up.”
“Okay, daddy, I’ll feed grandma.” I grab a tray and walk into the sunroom; grandma is sitting in the chair, just staring outside. I set the tray on the table and wheel her over. She moves her head to look at me. She sits in a wheelchair all day, doesn’t move, and barely speaks. She has been like this since I was around twelve years old, mom won’t tell me what happened to her, but she says it was an accident. I lift the spoon to her mouth; she’s still staring at me. I always feed her though, she is slow, but she eats eventually.
“Eat, grandma,” I instruct, but she doesn’t open her mouth like she usually does. I furrow my brows and move the spoon closer to her mouth. “Come on, grandma, it’s dinnertime.”I move the spoon closer to her mouth. She grabs my hand.
“ Demon! Demon!” she screams at me.
“Grandma, it’s me...” I try to get through to her as she holds on to me. She’s squeezing it tightly; as I try to pull away, something wraps around my throat and begins squeezing it.
“Gran...ma...it’s me..Eli..” I try to say, but I can no longer breathe.
“ Eli, did you,” Mom says as she walks into the room. “Oh my god, mom.”’ She shouts and rushes over to us
“Demon!”Grandma shouts her hold on me, tightening, and I feel my head getting lighter.
“Mom, it’s Elina; let go, mom! mom!” She tries to pull grandma away, but she won’t release the spell on my throat.
“ Avaris Ellis,” She shouts the spell; grandma's eyes fall shut immediately, her hand goes limp, and she releases my hand. I gasp for air, finally able to breathe. Mom catches me as I fall.
“Elina, are you ok?” I clutch my throat nodding as I look at grandma.
“Mom? What was that?”
“ I don’t know? She’s never done that before. Elina, I’m sorry.”She hugs me; I can hear her pounding heart. Just another problem on her plate, I hug her tightly, hoping to give her some comfort.
“I’m ok, mom, I’m ok.”She pulls away and looks me over before nodding; she turns back to grandma.
“ Go have dinner with your father. I’ll finish up here.”I nod and exit the room; my life keeps getting more and more complicated. My grandmother just attacked me after calling me a demon. Nothing makes sense anymore. I walk into the dining room, dads sitting at the table.
“Everything ok, sweetie?”I nod; no reason to worry, dad; mom will tell him if it’s necessary.
“ Mom is feeding grandma. She says we should eat.”He nods, and he digs in and takes a bite. I can’t eat; the feeling of being choked is too fresh in my mind.
“Taste delicious, sweetie.” He says before scooping another pile into his mouth.
“Thanks, Dad; I’m not hungry. I’ll eat later. I’ll keep you company, though.”He smiles at me.
“That’s why you’re my favorite daughter.”
“I’m your only daughter unless there is something mom and I need to know.”
“Like a second family in Seattle, shhh don’t tell you, mother.” He says, cheesing.
“Don’t tell mom what?”Mom asks as she walks in as; dad laughs, he winks at me.
“Nothing, baby.”I look at mom quizzically, wondering what happened with grandma.
“ Mom is sleeping. Elina, it’s best if I feed her from now on until we,” she trails off, and I nod, agreeing quickly. I love grandma, but I am not willing to risk my life. Who knows what will happen the next time I try. Dad looks between us, puzzled.
“ Why what happened?” He asks,
“Uh, she doesn’t recognize Elina anymore.”She explains as she sits and picks up her fork. That is one way to put it; not recognizing me is one thing; mistaking me for a demon is on a whole other level, but again I don’t want to worry, dad. Dad nods; he doesn’t ask any more questions. I guess we aren’t telling dad the whole truth. I feel my appetite returning, so I grab my fork and start eating as Dad tells mom and me about his day. We laugh and play around pretending to be a normal family for the remainder of dinner.
After dinner, I tell mom and dad I’m heading Iris; mom asks me not to tell dad about grandma until she figures out what’s happening. Which is fine with me; I don’t want to worry him if we don’t have to. I make my way out of the house, hop on my bike; it’s a little after 7 pm. I start my bike and then ride off. I have many questions for Raina; I hope she has the answers I’m looking for. I am riding my bike, thoughts racing as I try to make sense of the last couple of days. My dreams and grandma, I need to know what’s happening. I have to get to Iris soon; gripping the handle, I press the accelerator to speed up. I’m going as fast as I can when that feeling returns, the pull from the dream, deep in my bones, it’s pulling me forward, then finally I see it...those red eyes. Only I’m sure I’m not dreaming now; it’s real, this is the real thing. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen its form; it’s a wolf; I’ve never seen a wolf-like that. But I don’t have time to think because it’s running straight towards me.
Grrrrrrrrr Grrrrrrr Grrrrrrrr
I swing my bike around, heading back to where I came from. I look back, this bike is fast, but he’s catching up quickly. My heart slams against my chest as he lunges at my bike, barely missing the wheel. I speed up again; he growls and lunges again, this time catching the wheel. He swings it to the side; I hold on tight, my heart pounding. The bike crashes off-road into the woods. Pain ripples through my body, but I have to run. I can’t stay here and die. I hobble to my feet.
I hear growling behind me; I spin around and there he is, standing before me, barring his teeth. He calls me; he wants me, I step towards him...No, I can’t give in; I have to defend myself.
“Vasriezs Umbar,” I shout the attack spell, but it barely hits him. I try again but still nothing. F**k I have to run; I turn on my heels and sprint the other direction, ignoring the searing pain in my leg. My heart pounds as I race through the forest. I’m dead. I’m going to die; if he can outrun my bike, it’s only a matter of time before he catches me.
“Mine!”I hear Xavier's voice in my head, now would be a perfect time to show up, wolf boy.
“Xavier!”I shout, hoping he can hear me, but I don’t get an answer; he isn’t close by. I cut throw trees, branches hitting me as I run; I hear a growl behind. Oh no, he’s near; I feel something grab my leg. He sinks his teeth into me. I going to die; I’m sorry, mom and dad, I couldn’t save myself. He pulls his teeth out and bites me again.
“Ahhhhhh,” I scream out in pain.
“Mine!!!!!”I hear his voice; calm washes over me. I can’t feel the bite of anyone; my body feels light, like it’s floating. My mouth opens, but I don’t know the words I’m saying.
“Valarqurx utimum dugup lucintin Zin!”I shout with all my strength my body; I feel my consciousness fading as I fall with a thud to the ground.
Xavier I’m at home in the study; it was once my father's office when he was alive but has been collecting dust since his death. I am rummaging through books of werewolves history, hoping to find something recorded about bonds between witches and wolves. The need to go to her, to protect, keeps growing, but I don’t want it; I don’t want her. We must find a way to sever this bond. I grab the tenth book flipping through the pages, nothing. F**k, I toss the book across the room, my anger surging. That witch better figures this out. I run my hand through my hair before walking over to the book and picking it back up. Knock Knock Knock I sigh sharply before asking “Who is it?”My voice rolls through the room like thunder. The door opens slightly, Keira sticks her head in. “It’s me, babe; everything ok?” She opens the door and smiles and saunters over to me, thee wraps her arms around. “ Grrr Grrr,” Silas
Xavier I run into the woods and pull off my clothes and shift into my wolf, and begin to run. “Silas, can you sense her?” “Yes, but I cannot connect to her mind like before; something is blocking our link.” “ F**k!” I growl as my need to protect her deepens. I need to find more about this link. I need to speak to my uncle now. Why would he attack her? How would her dying help him? My thoughts are interrupted by a growling wolf who pounces out of nowhere and bares his teeth at me. I immediately recognize his scent; Jay and another familiar wolf, Sean, are standing before us and blocking my path. “Grrrr” “Get out of my way,” I growl through our mind link. “If it isn’t the little Alpha,” Sean says; he’s a beta in Keira’s pack also sent with the alliance, he resents the fact that I’ll be the Alpha. “Get the f**k out of my way!” “Why would we?” he growls as his wolf circles me.
****** Elina ****** I look down at my bleeding legs, which are covered in bite marks. Pain simmers deep into each wound. I breathe heavily, looking for a way out; he’s been gone for five minutes. I need to get up; I need to leave before he returns and kills me. I try to stand but immediately fall because my legs are too weak. I’m too weak. “You pathetic thing.” My heart race as his voice pierces my eardrum like a knife. He appears before me smirking; my head hurts, the bite hurts, but the betrayal feels worse; he saved me multiple times. He said he had no reason to kill me, so why now? Did he find out something about our connection and want to get rid of me because of it? “Xavier, please...we’ll break the bond, I’ll break it, please don’t kill me.” I try to beg, but my cries don't seem to touch his heart. Instead, he laughs, a maniacal devilish laugh; why is he like this? Was he always like this? “You’r
******** Elina ******** “You could have just asked to kiss...” He stops and looks around, finally realizing our surroundings. He slowly rises to his feet. “Where are we?” “I don’t know,” I reply, but it does look similar to the woods surrounding the house. "It’s your mind; can’t you control your thoughts."
Elina My heart pounds in my chest as I run through the dark woods illuminated only by the red moonlight. Dread fills my heart as we get closer and closer to Xavier’s home. Are they under attack? Who would attack them? I wonder, but I already have a sinking feeling in my stomach what today will be. I arrive through the clearing out of breath as Xavier and his younger self runs into an invisible barrier. Young Xavier growls loud as he tries to run into it, but he bounces back. A witches barrier, I note, these are used generally for witch meetings and counsels. Only witches can get in and out with ease. “Xavier, stop!” Young Elina screams, running to his side after his second attempt sends him flying into the woods. “Don’t touch me,” he shouts, brushing her off. “I’m trying to help. You can’t get through because it’s a witch's barrier; you need a witch to enter, so please take my hand.”She reaches out to him; he looks at her hand for a mo
Elina I watch, mesmerized as they continue to fight. “You were always too weak and a coward,” Xerxes growls. Titus jumps to his feet and lunges at him again. Xerxes dodges him and swings a right hook in his jaw, causing him to stagger and fall to the ground. “I am a coward; you are right. But there is no honor when you are dead.” He shouts, pulling a red necklace from his pocket. He throws it over his neck and immediately shifts into a wolf. Then he runs full speed lunging at Xerxes before he can react, biting him on his leg. Xerxes cries out as he rips his flesh out. He doubles over on the ground. Titus wolf continues his attack on Xerxes, biting and scratching. Xerxes starts rising to his feet. He swings his arm, knocking the wolf down. Then he goes to one of the dead wolves and pluck the necklace off their neck and shift into his wolf. “I pump my fist into the air. Yes, now they are on a level playing field. Xerxes’s wolf growls and
Elina Fifteen minutes ago “Hi, Elina” I look up at my younger self, her eyes pure white. I stare at her, confused. Why am I here? Can she see me? “You can see me?” “I did just say hi to you, so that would mean...” I frown; who is this little girl giving attitude? I mean, she’s me, but... “ you don’t have to be smart, “ I mumble. “You’re acting like it’s normal talking to yourself.” “I’m sure you’ve seen stranger things.” “Well yeah…wait, could you see me back there? Did you bring me here?” “I was the one who showed you the memory, and yes, I brought you here. The young version of yourself, however, was not me.” “Then who are you? Why are you people playing in my head?” I reply, frustrated and annoyed with everyone who thinks my mind is their own personal playground. “I am you; we are one.” I furrow my brows. “You said you weren’t the young me from the vision.” “I am
Alavic I sit in my office scanning the files detailing the search for Katerina. It’s been seven years, and we’re no closer to finding her. “Any movements by Titus?” I ask crus my second in command. “His people have been quiet for some time now, too quiet. Now that the Alpha is about to come of age, I’m afraid he’s planning something” I frown. That’s probably true; even though Titus has sworn he had nothing to do with them getting attacked that day, I had my suspicions. But I have no proof since Katerina is missing and my brother... BOOM. The sound echoes through the house as the walls begin to shake. “Are we under attack?” I ask as the sound echoes a second time. “Who would have the guts to attack head-on, not even Titus.”He replies. I jump to my feet immediately as the house shakes again. I open the door and walk out with Crus following. Whoever it is will pay dearly. I stop at the ton of the stairs and look over the banister. What I see shoc
I remove my teeth from El’s neck and howl as our connection deepens. I feel everything she’s feeling: shock, confusion, love, and pain. It’s minor, but I hate that she is in pain because of me. I bit her before the full moon, and though it’s frowned upon, the effects are usually just mild pain and prolonged sleep. “AHHH.” El cries out, and simultaneously pain surges through me suddenly. I growl and shift back into my human form, pulling her into my arms. “El,” I call out to her, but her eyes are closed as her body shakes. I can feel the pain coursing through her. Silas claws against my being, trying to get out. Stop it, I command. There is nothing you can do. What’s wrong with her? “I don’t—-” “AHHHH,” she cries out again. “Troy!” “Yes, Alpha.” “Get Dr. Dyer, now!” Twenty minutes later, I’m pacing before the room as Dr. Dyer examines El. I can feel she is no longer in pain, but I can’t help from feeling like this is my fault. I shouldn’t have bitten her before it was time,
“What? Dad!” I shout, angrily. I was wondering why he wanted to see him so badly. Of course, he would make such a desperate request since he has no faith I can succeed him on my own.“Tess, this is for your own good.”“I’m not some charity case, Dad. I told you I could handle this on my own. I don’t need anyone and certainly not him!”I glare at Xavier, who is still in shock.“I don’t know how much longer I have. With his protection, I know you will be okay.” He reaches out to touch me but I turn away from him.“I don’t need his protection. I’m strong. Stronger than you think I am. I will—”“Wayne!” Xavier shouts followed by a large thud.I spin and find my father on the ground twisting in pain.“Dad!” I say as I run to his side.“What’s wrong with him? Is this related to his illness?”Xavier asks.“I don’t know he’s only ever coughed up a little blood before. Dad! What’s wrong?! Tell me what’s wrong?” He grits his teeth as blood leaks from the corner of his lips.“He needs a doctor—-Se
ElinaSilas stops and backs away slightly, but he keeps his guard up as he stands between me and the man. I look at the man who is still on the ground. His hair is a little shorter than it was a couple of days ago, but from the scar across his left eyebrow to his ocean blue eyes, and even the exhaustion he wears. I know it’s him. I watch as he rises to his feet slowly.“Are you alright?” I ask.He nods his head. “I am just a little sleep-deprived. I’m sorry if I scared you.” He takes a step toward me but stops in his track as Silas bares his teeth, warning him to stay back.“Silas, it’s okay. I think we can trust him.” I say.I do not know him, but I think if he wanted to hurt me, he wouldn’t have saved me from getting hit that day.“She’s right, Xavier. I am only here to talk. I will not hurt her.” The man says.I stare at him, stunned, as Silas growls at the mention of Xavier’s name. How does he know him? Who is he? Were my instincts wrong, and he was sent by Titus? I take two steps
Elina. The morning passes by pretty quickly and soon enough; it was time for lunch. I stand on the staircase waiting for Xavier and the girls. I’m glad Cass and I are back on good terms. It was hard being mad at her. Even if it was only for a day.“Elina.” I spin as Eric comes walking up to me. I figure he would come back to school soon. I wondered how I would feel when I see him again. If I would be angry or feel betrayed. However, what I feel now is indifference. Perhaps because, unlike Cass, he was a stranger to me before all this. Plus, after being stabbed by my grandmother, nothing else really surprises me.“You’re not here to kidnap me again, are you?” I joke as he approaches me.Not getting the joke, his face grows stern. “I’m really sorry.”“Which part? Poising me with your blood or trying to resurrect my dead great-grandmother in my body?”“Both. El, I’m really sorry. About everything. I don’t know how to make it up to you, but I promise I will. On my mate’s honor. I will.”“
IrisI awake to the heavy feeling of his hand across my body. I groan as I remove it and sit up, staring down at his sleeping face. Why did I let him sleep here last night? I am done with him. This relationship is pointless. He won’t choose me as his mate, and that is something that will never change. I need to move on. I have my whole life ahead of me. College next fall away from this town and him. That’s what I need: a fresh start, but this town was supposed to be Raina’s and I fresh start. A change to forget the horrible memory of our parent’s death, but now she’s off chasing ghosts and I’m in love with my teacher. My eyes drift to him sleeping peacefully and I can’t help thinking of all the times we fell asleep in each other arms. I hate to admit it, but I miss him. His smile, his touch, the feel of his skin against mine. I raise my hand, suddenly feeling the urge to touch him, when his eyes snap open. My hand pauses mid-air.“You act cold, but I know you miss me.” He says as he g
I walk out of the shower and head into my room. I towel dry my hair and pull on shorts and a t-shirt, then sit on the bed. After leaving Uncle Alavic, I spent the day training, determined to get better. I need to be stronger now that he’s leaving in two days. I need to become the leader he wants me to be.My phone buzzes and I grab it, hoping it’s Elina. I’ve been calling her all day, but she’s been ignoring me.I flip it over and see a text message from KeiraWe need to talk. Why would I need to talk to her? I frown and throw my phone down, depressed that it isn’t El. I sigh. I guess I’ll have to wait until school tomorrow to talk to her. Right now, I should try to get some rest. I pull back the covers and slip under, turning off the lamp. I close my eyes and try to sleep, but all I can think about is Uncle leaving and if I’m ready to be the Alpha without him guiding me? I toss and turn for hours until I give up and sit up in the bed. I need to clear my head. Maybe going for a run w
XavierTwenty minutes ago“Elina!” I shout as she falls to the ground.I rush to her side and pull her into my arms.“Elina!” I shake her, but she won’t budge. Her eyes are closed, and there is a small trickle of blood coming from one nostril.‘Mate’ Silas whines as he scratches to break free. I grit my teeth and push him back.“Stop it. You can’t help her.” He whimpers as I scoop El up in my arms.“Don’t worry, she will be fine.” I turn to head to the door when Noime shouts.“Mom!” I spin as Dad’s wolf is thrown across the room. He crashes into the wall and falls to the ground.“Dad!” I shout as I hurry to his side, with El still in my arms.“Mom!” she shouts. I spin as El's grandmother rises from the ground.“Mom!”Boom! A large burst of power erupts from her, pushing Noime and me back and shattering every glass in the room. I duck, shielding myself and El, who suddenly starts panting.“El,” I call as her breathing gets heavier.‘What’s wrong with her?’ Silas asks as I watch her che
ElinaI keep my grip on Xavier as he steers the bike down the road. My thoughts return to the man who had just saved me. His exhausted eyes were ablaze with rage. I’m not sure what he meant when he said he’d see me again. I’m hoping he’s not another enemy to contend with. Titus and his pack will be hard enough to deal with.“If he then we will face him together,” Xavier says through our mindlink. It still feels weird when his voice pops into my head, but it also makes me feel closer to him. I wrap my arms around him and lay my head on his back.“Together,” I murmur, closing my eyes for a brief rest.“El,” The sound of Xavier’s voice stirs me from sleep. I slowly open my eyes and realize we’re not moving anymore. I release Xavier and sit lean back, realizing we’re in Cass’ driveway.“You fell asleep. I guess we got a little rest after last night.” He says as he gently massages my hands that are still wrapped around him. I lean forward and press my face against his back, inhaling him.“
XavierI rub my temples as I listen to the reports of the latest news about what’s happening in our territory. I’ve been in this meeting since 10 and now it’s around noon and I’m ready for this to end. I glance down at the ring on my finger and smile. Maybe I should escape to El's room. I’m sure it would be more fun than this.“What are we going to do about the rogues?” Gris, one of the elders, asks, pulling me from my thoughts.“What rogues?” I glance up at my uncle, confused.“We had some rogues move in on the river in the last week.”“Why didn’t I know about this?”“You were.” He pauses. “I should have informed you, alpha. We’ve been monitoring them while you were—away. They seem harmless.” He says
