As white paper flooded the white tiled floor, Anna felt a rush down her spine. A rush filled with an adequate mix of confusion and hatred. As her eyes locked further with that of Drake Blunt’s she began to retrace her steps.
She was willing to work her butt off in the company as long as she destroyed him. But would working for him directly increase her chances to destroy him? Working as his secretary?
“Secretary?” she asked with a low voice and the man who had to be at least six foot, four inches tall smiled, his stance having an air of pride around it in a way that annoyed her.
And what on earth was his request? To pick up his date?
“Uh… I am sorry, but I didn’t sign up for this.”
“I know. But I want you to be my secretary regardless.” He made a quick retreat towards the window side by his right.
“Why? Anna was certain her face wasn’t hiding her distraught.
“I don’t even have an experience when it comes to secretarial work. How do you-”
“Amelia will put you through before she leaves.” Anna took a brief glance at the slim woman who was wearing a very confused look and that image stuck in Anna’s head who was already hating the man some more for abruptly putting an end to the woman’s career.
“Oh…” He let out a brief chuckle as Anna’s deadly gaze fell on him again.
“I am not that callous. I am firing Amelia from her position not her job.”
Anna arched her brow. That made no sense to her.
Drake Blunt took a step closer, his fingers now running through his styled hair which was a delightful mix of light brown and black. “I am going to transfer her to another department.”
"But-” The lady called Amelia tried to speak bur her boss seemed to have established his position quite well as she kept quiet by just seeing him pocket his hands.
“I am sick of seeing her face, that’s why I am firing her.”
Anna’s hands began their fisting exercise. He was being so casual about firing her, it made her wonder if he even flinched a little when her sister died. She also wondered if he was the one that ordered the incredulous suicide tale to be published.
Anyhow it was, Anna’s reluctance to become his secretary was already fading and she could already see new opportunities arising with working for him despite the high risks.
“So…” Drake Blunt must have read her recent decision off her face, the smile on his face was too grand, like he were a baby who had just been fed. “Are you accepting the offer? Don’t worry, as long as you do your job, you’ll be handsomely paid.”
“Mr. Blunt…” Her chest heaved dramatically as her eyes locked with his even intensely. “You have just gotten yourself a new secretary.”
“Good.” He jammed his palms together twice and rushed towards where she was. “Miss Hendrick… wonderful choice.”
His large hands clutched her shoulders firmly. “Beautiful choice. Alex, please assign Amelia a new department right now,” he referred to the other man in the room who Anna hadn’t had the time to observe.
“Isn’t she going to introduce Miss Hendrick to the system?” The man had a friendlier voice that wasn’t attempting to flirt. Not that Drake Blunt was flirting with her, but everything about him had this sexual touch.
From his body hugging shirt, to his slight bouncing as he walked, to the smile he wore, everything she noticed explained quite well why women flocked around him even though he was sure to dump them after a short while.
“I’ll take care of that. I am certain I can teach Miss Hendrick here how to work for me within five minutes.” Anna was amused at his cockiness and she became curious. She wanted to suddenly experience the teaching.
Whispers that were barely audible and a lot of feet dragging happened as the man named Alex did as he was asked and soon, Amelia was gone and soon, it was just the cocky boss, his sturdy friend and the new secretary that was left in the large room.
“So… should I show Miss Hendrick to her office?” Alex asked and Drake Blunt shook his head.
“I’ll like Miss Hendrick to do something for me,” he said, taking few steps back, his eyes still not leaving hers.
“You want me to go get your date?” she asked as she recalled his absurd request from earlier.
He scoffed, shook his head and without a word, walked towards Alex who was working on something on his iPad. Anna watched the man as he whispered a few words to his friend, her snoopy side activated.
After some seconds, Alex nodded and walked towards the elevator, leaving Anna and Drake in the room.
Drake whose hands seemed to find it hard to resist being pocketed strutted to a nearby seat, his mouth making a whoosh sound as he fell onto the couch.
Anna just stood and watched. But she did that for a little while as she hated being ignored.
“When do I get to start my work?” she asked, her voice cracking as she urged the beast within her to lay low. The beast wanted to tear Drake Blunt apart at that very moment.
As she watched his eyes slightly flick towards her, she sighed and wished things were so simple she could go rogue and tear the man’s shirt apart while asking him for the truth with her eyes reddened.
“Oh, Miss Hendrick…” The look on his face suggested he found pleasure in acting like she was not in the room. “While we wait, could you pick and arrange the papers Amelia fell down? I really can’t stand an untidy place.”
The side of his lip lifted after his last statement and Anna could tell he was already giving her tips to use when working with him.
Without a word, her eyes scanned the area which was littered with white paper and she reminded herself why she was willing to put up with anything thrown her way and soon, she was in bent over papers upon papers which she gathered to her chest.
While she did that, Drake Blunt was making random sounds with his mouth which combined annoyingly with tapping sound from his phone.
It annoyed her, but she kept her irritation from being expressed and once the last document got placed on top of the little stack drawn to her chest, she got up, walked briskly to where Drake Blunt sat cross-leggedly and said, “I am done arranging the papers sir.”
“Sir?” The man’s head snapped in her direction as though she had spoken a forbidden word and Anna wondered if Drake was one of those bosses that hated being reminded of how old they could get.
Her brows lifted ridiculously as she awaited the man’s explanation.
“Miss Hendrick…” A finger on his right hand popped upwards in her direction and his blank stare intensified.
“Is there a problem… sir?”
His head danced a bit as he adjusted in his seat a bit, putting an end to his ridiculous staring. “Miss Hendrick, I know you are new here… but I must say, I like you already.”
“Huh?” Anna was tempted to probe a finger into her ears to check if she had heard wrong.
“I believe we will have so much fun together.” His arms spread out in front of him like he was attempting to hug an invisible being. A quick shake of his left hand was accompanied with, “Drake Blunt and Anna Hendrick.”
The right hand experienced the brief shake next and with a dramatic, deepened voice, he said, “The gorgeous boss and his competent secretary… what do you think?”
His eyes glittered as he directed the question at her. And Anna, who had a look that wondered how many loose screws he had, answered, “Uh… I have not even started anything… don’t you think it is early for you to decide that I am competent? Like, I said, I have never worked as a secretary.”
“And like I said, you will learn how to become one.” He got off his seat. “Miss Hendrick, I can tell you are a fast learner.”
She quirked her brows and after, she contemplated the number of times she had raised her brows, she could not help but conclude she would do a lot more of it considering how crazy things were becoming.
“I am going to-” His phone chimed and after a brief look at it, he looked back at her with his smile even wider, she notice a crack on his lower lip.
“Miss Hendrick, I am pleased to inform you that your five minutes lesson will be starting soon.”
“Soon?”
“Anna…” Her eyes narrowed at the use of her first name. “What you have to do is simple. Those papers in your hands… you’ll have to deliver them to the hundredth floor within five minutes.”
That sounded so easy, Anna wondered why he would give her such a simple task. She was already rushing towards the elevator when he stopped her. “I am not done Anna.”
In addition to his statement, the sudden detour of his voice to a somewhat sinister lane surprised her a bit. As she turned, Drake took long steps towards her and when they were close enough to punch each other, he stopped.
And Anna realized the glitter in his eyes were gone and replaced by a look that matched the somewhat sinister tone from earlier.
Effortlessly, he stretched his hand and gave her a small pat on the head and that action made the air become more tense. It was so tense, Anna could feel her cheeks constrict in reaction. If that was even possible.
“The elevators are not working right now Anna,” his voice croaked. “So, drop that idea and listen to my instruction carefully.”
As she nodded, she wondered if there something about Drake Blunt the public weren’t seeing. Perhaps he had some dangerous side to his personality. Without showing it, Anna made a little celebration in her head as she felt she had found something that could ruin the man if her speculations were true.
“I need those papers in my office within five minutes and you have to take the stairs.”
“The stairs?” Her jaw dropped. The building was huge enough to tell one that embarking on a journey via the stairs won’t be easy.
“If you are unable to get to my office within five minutes, you’ll be fired.”
“What?” Anna wondered if he had some kind of mental issue. Maybe he was those kind of rich people that liked to play games.
But somewhere at the back of her mind, she felt that he was joking.
The hard sole of his black oxford shoes announced his brief motion towards her.
“Fired.” He repeated firmly and Anna knew it was no joke.
“Behind the door adjacent the elevator is where you’ll find the stairs.” His eyes flicked to the watch on his right wrist and with his voice still stern, Drake Blunt said, “Your time starts now.”
And Anna surprised herself by rushing towards the stairs.
After taking a swift look at the small sign which signified she was already on the ninety-fifth floor, she checked her phone’s timer and saw that she had two minutes and some seconds left. Anna knew she could stop, go back home and pretend the day never happened. She could pretend Drake Blunt didn’t ask her to do something that might lead to her slumping. But she didn’t put a pause to her struggles up the numerous steps. As she jumped and skipped and panted and also swore occasionally, her sister’s calm face before the casket was closed kept playing in her head. And that served as a reminder. A reminder to do whatever it takes to get the truth. Soon, she was running past the sign that read, ‘ninety-six’ and Anna began to have some strong feeling about completing her task on time. She was already taking a turn to the next flight of stairs when she heard, loud and clear, someone say, “Oh, this is for Darcy Hendrick.” Anna’s attention was diverted immediately and without thinking tw
“Mr. Blunt, here is the meal your guest wants,” Anna announced quite loudly, ruining the fast paced, intense smacking. “Miss Hendrick…” Not looking flustered like the woman behind him who was trying to cover up her exposed nudity, her boss pulled up his trousers and walked towards her, his bulge not shying away. “Have you ever heard of the concept of knocking?” Anna bit into her lower lip as she realized she really hadn’t knocked. “I am sorry, I should have knocked.” She knew how to own up whenever she was wrong, it was a thing she did quite well. “Yes you should have. But what were you doing instead? Watching me fuck a woman.” Anna’s eyes swung sideways as she could already tell where the conversation was going. “Is that some kind of fantasy you have?” If there was a fantasy she had, it would be ruining him totally. But Anna didn’t express her willingness to fling his crap into his face. Instead, without a word, she walked to the closest stool and placed the tray on it. Looking
It never came. A groan escaped her as her eyes flung open. Her present state required her to get some sleep. She needed it to energize herself enough for whatever crazy thing would happen in her new place of work. But the needed slumber wasn’t doing as much as peeking. So, Anna ended up giving in to her state. She got off her bed with more groaning and decided to spend a great deal under the shower which was the first thing she should have done when she got back. Her rather dragged steps came to a halt when her phone’s ringtone filled the dimly lit room. At first, her rowdy mind failed to direct her to the device, but she got the hang of it after a small smack on the back of her head which hurt. But since it worked, Anna didn’t bother with boring herself with self talks and she went to her phone. It was Josh. Josh Handler. Like her, he also thirsted for revenge. He had loved her sister and even though Darcy was unable to return the love, he didn’t stop. Sometimes Anna felt he was
Anna was delightfully late by an hour and she sort of anticipated the ridiculous outburst Drake Blunt would give. The solemness of the night embraced her as she stepped into the elevator which tinged, a sign to welcome her inside its walls. Like a damn routine, Anna found herself waiting with a mix of patience and impatience as the ride dragged longer than she expected. But she was soon out of the space and approaching her boss's office. Anna couldn't detect a sexual sound, so she crossed off her boss inviting her for some kind of weird threesome off her list. Remembering to knock, Anna announced her presence and a small grunt answered from behind the doors. The man was seated at his table, roughened hair dancing slightly to the tune of the gentle air, eyes glued on the laptop in front of him, his hand tapping away at the table with some off key rhythm. "Mr. Blunt," Anna simply said. Without looking up, he said softly, "You are l
As he worked the last button on his shirt into its designated hole, Drake's head snapped towards the antique-looking desk clock which he got at a flea market during a small trip. With the hour hand tending towards eight, he wondered what was taking his new secretary so long to get his guest to the company. If anything, before he went home, he needed to ensure the deal with her father was still intact. He had planned a grand movie night for himself after his meeting but with the way things were going, he knew he'd have to wait a bit longer before he got to set his eyes on his newly installed screen. As he sashayed towards his seat, Drake's mind went to his new secretary. She was an interesting one no doubt. It was as though he knew that when he first set his eyes on her. But what he didn't expect was the fire she kept approaching him with. While being as calm as possible, he could sense some kind of hatred in her voice and that made him wonder if they had met before. Running his l
“I can’t believe she is really gone,” Anna whispered as the last of the guests walked away from the grounds that now held her mother’s remains. The withered leaves around her made little scrunching sounds, making her aware of the fact that Josh was still around.“Your father says he’ll be staying with his friend tonight,” he said, his voice sounding cautious, like he didn’t want to say the wrong things. Like he didn’t want to trigger something within her.Anna heaved a heavy sigh. Insane as it sounds, she actually needed the trigger. Apart from the sadness pulling at her chest, she was feeling extremely guilty, so guilty she’s been unable to let as much as a strand of tear fall. And Anna couldn’t deny the fact that she wanted to let all loose and wail. But something was holding her back. The fact that she ended things badly with her mother. The last time her mother spoke to her, she
As Anna responded to the blaring alarm from her phone that was reminding her that it was time to prepare for work, the grumpy woman instantly realized that had been a while since she saw her room looking fine. She was deep into the whole sadness thing even her room suffered a huge mess till she decided to arrange things the previous night. As she walked to the drawer to turn off the sound that was already irritating her, the side of her eye caught an object that she had not paid attention to for a while. Her sister’s phone. Leaning against the drawer, and taking a sigh, Anna’s mind traveled to the time Josh informed her of the hidden details of her sister’s death and she could not stop staring at the cracked screen of the device. She was still going to maintain her stance and keep the discovery of the phone from Josh but Anna knew she had to do something about the phone. With the hope that the phone would still be responsive and pinless, Anna grabbed her phone’s charger and connec
“Alright, this is where we stop our meeting for today. Let’s not forget to submit the quarterly reports, we need it to fast-track our next project,” the head of the meeting said and before others could respond, a screeching sound filled the room and someone ran as fast as can out of the room. With a deep frown on his face, Drake wondered what the deal was with Anna. Right after she acted all weird and grabbed his bottle of water to drink, she had been acting uncomfortable and at certain intervals, she made groaning sounds which almost made him consider throwing her out. But she had been taking notes so seriously, he chose to let her be. “Isn’t that lady your new secretary?” The manager director who was rumoured to be quite cosy with all the secretaries he had ever had, moved closer and asked nosily. With a fake smile on his face, Drake faced the man fully and said, “You should focus on the numerous workloads you have, Mr. Clark. My secretary is none of your business.” “Oh well.” T
“So…” Anna started the conversation as Drake seemed to find it hard. “Alex and Damon, uh? Who would have thought that they were working together?” “I am really sorry about everything, Anna,” Drake replied with a solemn voice, his eyes skillfully avoiding contact with hers. “Does that mean that Alex was aware of how and why my sister died?” Anna asked, ignoring his apology. There were things that needed to be discussed before apologies could take place. “I- I don’t know.” Drake had a little frown on his forehead as he stared ahead. “The details of everything that happened in the past weeks are still vague. I might know why Alex wanted the company, but there are still many questions I want to ask that remain unanswered.” “I guess you still want answers. As for me, I am tired of living in the past. I want to move forward with my life. I have gotten what I wanted- people know the truth about my sister’s death, so I have nothing more to do with IC. Inc.”
Drake wondered if he should have accepted the walking cane from the doctor when he offered it. As he stepped out of the passenger seat while he told the driver to wait at the entrance, he felt a small pull in his limbs that almost made him lose his steps. But he caught himself immediately and steadied his feet.Drake took another look at the mansion and he was reminded of Alex instantly.A few years after his mother's death, Alex joined them in that very building and he made staying in that damned place bearable. He got a brother and a friend in that man.But it seemed their friendship had no choice but to be tainted. Actually, it carried a stain from the start if indeed, his grandfather did the things Alex said he did. That was why he was walking into the huge building at that moment. He needed the full story, he needed someone to tell him what could have gone so wrong that a son had to lose his father to death.
Anna didn't know why, but she smiled as her eyes landed on the burial site of her mother and sister. The last time she had gone there, she had been shot and her mind was in a chaotic state, she had no idea where she was heading to at that point. But, in the midst of all that self-inflicted confusion, she had finally gotten what she wanted. The truth. She was able to find out the person that pushed her sister to her death. According to her initial plans, she had hoped to ruin IC. Inc as well, but it seemed Alex and the Windsworths got that covered. Just that their plans failed. Anna was glad it failed anyway, it would have been terrible if Drake had to suffer such a fate after everything he had gone through. After the cops took over the situation that had been so close to taking a deadly turn, journalists stormed her house. Somehow, they had gotten a tip to go there. Between the news of Drake's false sonship and the al
As he stared into his friend’s calm eyes, Drake shivered withthe fear that had earlier departed him. He felt his palms itch and, at the same time, he felt sweat form on his forehead. As he looked away he instantly felt suffocated and strangely, he wanted to turn to look at Anna’s face. He wanted to take a look at someone who he knew was still on his side. Someone that is yet to betray him. But he couldn’t move. Alex’s grip felt murderous, he just had to stay still. Mr. Windsworthwas the first to break the ice. “I don’t think I have tabled our requests yet, Mr. Drake Blunt.” His smile was wide and victorious, Drake had to wonder what could have made Alex to team up with such a man. “What requests?” he decided to maintain the false calm his face had. Drake decided to rough that situation till it would become advantageous for him. “You want my company? Why? You are not entitled to it, Mr. Windsworth. Neither is your daughter.”
Anna sniffled as she watched the deep brown liquid drizzle into her white mug while her trembling hand held the kettle. Her mind seemed to be far away from what she was doing but she was quick enough to prevent the coffee from overflowing.Biting into her lower lip as she set the kettle aside, Anna wondered if her father would be coming home that day. His disappointed look earlier was yet to be erased as well as Drake’s look of disbelief and hurt.As her palm felt the heat of the mug, she heard a knock on the door.Anna lifted her head and started to walk towards the living room. She didn’t bother to check the door because she was not interested in seeing anyone at that moment. Besides, she wasn’t expecting anyone, it would be useless to waste good energy by walking to the door. Now relaxed into the couch that faced the TV, Anna began to think about the next thing to do with her life. Her original plan had been successfully disrupted. Th
Though bewilderedbeyond her imagination, Anna was quick to determine that Drake wasn’t just going to walk out of the door. She needed to make him know that he was accusing the wrong person. So, she snapped out of it and raced towards the man who was already opening the door on the driver’s side. The door slammed quite loudly as Anna positioned herself in front of him, her stance really defensive. The man sighed, an indication that he really didn’t want to see her at that point.“Drake…”“Leave, Anna.”She spread her arms to prevent his assess to the car door. “I did not do it.”“How do you expect me to believe you? Apart from Alex and my grandfather, you are the only one that knows that I am not my father’s son. Now, thanks to you, everybody in this city who has an interest in my family’s life know this fact. Thanks to you,” he pointed an accusing
It was no doubt strange.According to Alex’s source, Damon had barely spent two hours in the prison yard when someone allegedly attacked him, stabbing him to death. This person’s identity, when checked, had no ties whatsoever to Damon or Tate, the convict that was hired by the now dead man.Clearly, something else was going on. Something fishy. But, Anna couldn’t care less.Truthfully, she hardly felt terrible about Damon’s death. But, she didn’t feel happy either. Her present feeling wasn’t something she could deduce easily, it confused her greatly.“Anna,” Drake called from behind as she reached for the door handle. Her fingers wrapped around the flat handle, her digits ready to push the door open so that she could finally rest in her father’s house. “You haven’t said a word.” Anna read caution in his voice.Exhaling hard, she turned to face him. Her eyes narrowed to wade off
She had a dream. She had been chasing a faceless man whose laughter haunted her and caused her sleeplessness. She chased the annoying man past grounds, past bloodied bridges and when she finally caught him and saw his face, she smiled. He had the face of the man who killed her sister. So, she did the same thing he did to her sibling. She dragged him to the top of a building in the dirty, rotten-looking city and while looking down at the deadly height with a smile, she made sure to beat him up.Her legs kicked, her fists punched, her head butted, until the man bled senselessly. Then, while relishing his cries for mercy, she pushed him off the building, watched him till he fell and for minutes, she laughed as his body became a part of the city’s rottenness. She laughed so hard that she began to cry.Anna’s eyes were dripping tears as she opened her eyes to the brown-like ceiling. She wondered where she was after she let a small satisfied
Anna let out a loud yawn as the night grew older. As she lifted her head from the dimly-lighted screen of her laptop, she saw that most of the men had stepped out, probably to relieve themselves or drive away sleep. Her chair swirled as she sat straight and closedthe device in front of her. Anna looked towards Drake and Alex who were still conversing over business issues that could not be handled in the day.She then decided she needed a break from the night work, and, also needed to ease herself. As soon as she got up, Drake’s attention was drawn and he got up as well, startling the man beside him.“Are you going somewhere?” he asked.Anna’s lips twitched as she wondered why he has acting like she was about to jump offa building. He certainly didn’t react that way when Josh and his men decided to step out for some air.“I-””I am coming with you,” he hurriedly said
