Chapter 4

Crap, crap, crap!

This is bad. This is really bad.

“Jen Davis, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent, and everything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law.” A huge officer says as he walks towards me carefully.

I watch him, and I can see fear dancing in his eyes.

“Aww, are you afraid of a girl?” I ask loudly, and the officer scoffs.

“Shut up.” He says rudely when he reaches me.

He grabs my hands and turns me around. He then place on me a cold metal handcuff.

Due to the uncomfortable position my hands are in, I clench my jaw, trying to mask the pain I’m feeling in my wrists.

“Wait.” Robert says.

Why do I keep calling him by his actual name?

My eyes dart to him, and I can see that he’s staring back at me.

“Where is your boss?” He asks the officer next to him.

There are almost ten officers in this room, and though I am already apprehended, they all still seem to be on their guard.

They have their weapons pointed at me, incase I try to escape.

And I don’t blame them, I have evaded them too many times to count. It’s easy for me.

A bulky man walks into the room, and the officers make room for him.

I know him.

He’s the Lieutenant.

In fact, everyone knows him. He’s always on the news.

“Robert..” He says as he walks up to the CEO and shakes his hands. He also has a huge smile on his face, and I don’t blame him.

If I have just found someone that I have been looking for for years, I’d be smiling too.

“You were right...she came.” The CEO says as he stares at me.

“Of course! I knew she would be back, considering me and my guys didn’t find your dead body. She always finishes her job.” The lieutenant says, and then chuckles.

“Isn’t that right, Jen?” He asks as he walks closer to me.

“It took forever to get you, but now look at you. You are in my hands.” He says, his voice filled with excitement.

“Take her away.” He says loudly to the officer, and he begins to push me forcibly towards the exit of the room.

“Lieutenant, wait.” Robert says, and everyone stares at him, including me.

“Let her go.” He says, earning a chuckle from me and a few officers.

“This guy must be nuts.” One of the officers says lowly, and they all laugh, including the lieutenant.

“Robert, I don’t have time for jokes, boy. I have to process this young lady and share the good news with the press as soon as possible.” He says proudly.

“Can we talk?” He asks the lieutenant.

“Talk about what?” He asks.

“Sir, I believe you would like my signature to be on that grant offer my company made a few weeks ago to the police department.” Robert says with a small smile.

He’s using his CEO skills, that I can respect.

I know about the offer. It’s a very hefty donation from the CEO’s company, but it was not processed because Robert didn’t sign.

Robert said that he was not informed about the grant decision by his company sooner, so he was not going to sign it.

The lieutenant has been appealing to him, but he said he wasn’t doing it.

The lieutenant clears his throat.

“Um, boys, wait for me outside, will you?” He says to the officers and they leave.

“Not you though.” He points to the officer holding me sternly.

Everyone begins to leave, and soon, the room is close to empty.

“What do you want?” The lieutenant asks Robert.

Robert smirks as he runs his hands through his hair.

“I want you to let her go.” He says.

The lieutenant head tilts in confusion.

“Why are you doing this? She’s a criminal!” He says, clearly annoyed.

I watch them both in fascination.

Are they seriously having a conversation about me being released. Doesn’t Robert know that I would kill him when I get the slightest chance.

“I don’t care, I want her free.” He says back without fear.

“Then she would just end up killing you. Do you want that, Robert?” The lieutenant says.

The CEO stays quiet for a few seconds.

“Sign the grant offer, Robert. The company and I regrets that you weren’t inform about it much sooner.” The lieutenant explains.

“The department really needs it.” He adds.

“You there.” Robert says as he points to me.

I instinctively look around me to see whether he’s pointing at another person, but it’s me.

“Would you kill me if I help you get free?” He asks me, and I grin.

“Robert, she will! She’s a freaking assassin! She doesn’t care about you!” The lieutenant says loudly.

“Lieutenant, I am not speaking to you.” Robert says in a warning tone.

The lieutenant cusses under his breath.

“I want to let you go.” Robert says to me.

He walks tentatively to me as he speaks.

“But I need you to promise me something.” He adds.

“Why do you want me free?” I ask Robert, and he looks taken aback.

“That’s a very good question.” He responds.

He looks ridiculous, considering that he’s only wearing boxer briefs, and is shirtless while trying to have a sane conversation with me.

“And it deserves a very good answer.” I say, my voice coming out soft.

“I don’t have a perfect answer for you. But all I can say is that you’re special, Jen.” He says.

I chuckle lowly at his response.

Special? That’s why he doesn’t want me to rot in prison? Because I’m special?

That’s a load of bull.

“And it’s not just about sex.” He adds.

“I want to be with you, Jen.” He says with a small smile, and for a brief moment, I picture him waiting for me as I walk down the aisle to meet him.

I picture us laying in bed and spending hours talking about anything that falls in our heads.

For a brief moment, I imagine a world where I can be with this man.

And the most scary part about all this is that, I think I actually like him.

And it’s something that I will never forgive myself for.
