STEPPING INSIDE THE ROOM of steel, pressing the button with the number 20, watching as the doors close and the elevator begins to rise.
The reflecting steel walls allow me to take in my appearance. Brunette roots striking against the blonde locks, and blue eyes scrutinizing every move. The black tank top sticking to my skin just like the leather jeans, and combat boots complete the outfit. Taking out the blue contacts that help to keep my identity hidden, I toss them in the trash.
The low hum of the music playing, allows me to recall the past.
Having found my dad murdered, seeing his lifeless body lying just beyond the front door, set my hurt numb and mind into action. Remembering his words to contact Leonard Martins, an old friend, if there was trouble.
The one call to him changed my entire life, like a scene out of a movie. Allister or as he came, Harris Miller brought me to safety, the only other individual in the world I could trust.
Seven years.
2555 days spent without my dad.
The number of nights I spent training, in efforts to avenge the death of my father, becoming an agent under Leonard’s protection, which now became my boss.
A ding sounds, pulling me from my thoughts. Elevator doors open, and I am met with a pair of brown eyes that I have come to know all too well.
Allister. With a grin on my lips, I say, “The almighty Wave appears, missed me?”
The day I decided to become an agent at Cypher, Alllister, or Wave as I call him usually, had become my mentor, a superior rank to mine allowed me to tease him by calling him titles of respect, knowing how much he hated them.
"Yes, Hira." He smiles, “As always, you did a great job.”
"My trainer taught me well.”
He shook his head, the smile lingering, “Leonard is looking for you."
As the last word of his thought floats through the air, the pager-like system on my watch sounds again. Glancing down, I turn the volume off and feel the device vibrate with the notification. All members of the agency are provided with this watch, allowing the administrative team to reach us wherever we are, missions are an exception.
Carrying the basic features of any smartwatch, it allows us to monitor our health, records our achievements as an agent, as well as working as a tracking device, and being able to self-destruct when in the hands of enemies.
As the screen turns off the resting face of the watch switches to mimic a clock, with the logo of the agency, two crows circling the center of the dial, in a complete circle, with a leaf in their mouth.
Non corvus corvum trahere de in oculo alterius.
The motto of the agency, inscribed onto the band of the watch, translating to, “a crow will not pull out the eye of another crow.”
"I'm going to report to him now"
“Any leads on the K-9 group?” Wave’s voice stopping me.
“Nope, still hiding.”
As I begin to walk towards Leonard's office, Wave grabs my hand and turns me around, worry evident in his eyes, as he glances at my most recent scar on my arms from the last mission.
“Don’t worry,” I begin, “ it’s noth-”
"Go to the infirmary later, I'll wait for you. We’ll discuss our mission for next week," leaving no room for argument, he begins to walk towards his office.
"Yes, sir."
Ignoring the watchful eyes of the other agents, I make my way towards Leonard’s office. Still not being used to Wave, which is not serious, with him being wary of the rest, allowed him to trust a very limited number of individuals. Having walls built high, it was rare that he let me in, making me one of the few individuals being able to tolerate his attitude, thus, making me the perfect partner.
Being the youngest agent who successfully became a Top agent with his skills, he gained everyone’s respect.
Passing Ren Warner, Leonard’s secretary, greeting with a smile he says, “You are the reason for that man’s white hair.”
Dismissing the statement with a roll of my eyes, “Good to see you too Ren.”
Coming to a stop in front of a door possessing Leonard's name, I knock, entering once I hear a curt, “Come in.”
Entering the office, I spot him sitting behind his desk going through the year’s final report. Watching the stress lines deepen on his forehead, in worry. As the boss of Cypher, having to manage 200 individuals - including scientists, pilots and several agents - and hope the 50 agents currently away in various nations, is making him age.
Hearing the noise of the door close, he looks up, eyes lighting up.
“Glad you finally had time to join us Hira.”
“Patience, old man,” I retort, “Here are the files you wanted, I was also able to gain some intel on K-9,” taking a seat, I continue, “They were active throughout Italy however that news simmered down after a week I was there.”
The K-9 organization is famous for acting like feral dogs. Working off the grid for many missions, they are invincible and are being hunted by several intelligence agencies throughout the world. Killing off possible sources before any information can be released, using brutal techniques.
Rumours ran through the wind that they skinned their victims alive, torturing them before finally killing them. With no records in any public or private database, other than members having a diamond tattoo inked on their backs, the illegal organization is able to move freely.
The government of the United States of America placed orders for us to eliminate the organization. Working behind the scenes on an action plan, avoiding any unnecessary conflict to avoid any threats, from the past month K-9 is capturing our agents.
Aside from orders, I am working day and night to find a lead. Anger running through my veins, they killed my dad and in return I’ll kill them.
"Those darn dogs will not let me live in peace," he massages his head, “Thank you for the information, the next plan of action will include all top agents.”
Eyebrows raising, "What about me? I can take them.”
His eyes gazing at me like I was completely inside, "You are still a few years early to be a top agent, Hira. I am not sending you out to die."
"To d-"
“You are my greatest weapon, Hira but you will not be a part of this mission and that is final.”
Too angry to be in the same space as Leonard for the moment, I leave, heading towards the elevator, to the floor that held my room.
Placing my thumb on the fingerprint scanner and leaning forward for the retinal scan, the two-factor security system allows the door to click open.
The room is already illuminated and my eyes search for Sigreen, a weapon, and biochemical development scientist, and my roommate.
Finding the pale grey room to be empty of human life I fall down on my bed, hugging a pillow close to me, finding my muscles relaxing against the mattress, eyes falling shut as sleep takes over.
---
Entering the familiar brown door, I hear glass shattering as it touches the ground.
Calling out, “Dad, are you alright?”
Walking towards the kitchen, I see a man - his face covered - holding a gun, aiming it at my dad’s head, standing behind him while he was on the floor, hands behind his head.
"Who are you?"
Reaching my arm to a plant that rests behind me, I feel for a gun my dad hides there.
"Explain to her, Theodore. Your daughter's asking."
Dad spits blood on the floor, looking at me, he says, "She's not my daughter."
Breath hitching, Dad! What are you saying?"...
"Where is it, Theodore? I know you are hiding it."
"I'm not telling you anything."
"Then, say goodbye to your daughter."
Hearing someone shout my name, I wake from the nightmare.
My body covered in a sheen of sweat chills running down my spine I find Cade holding my shoulders, worry shining bright in his eyes.
“You still have the nightmare?”
Cade - my best friend, the first person to welcome me into the agency. He’s a captain, a pilot in this agency.
He snaps his fingers in front of my face, “Earth to Hira!”
“Yes, they won’t leave,” I croaked out, my voice hoarse.
Nodding he asks, “Want a hug?”
I was silent, still recovering from my nightmare.
“C’mon, I know you want my hugs.”
He pulls me into him. I would push him if I was my energetic self but I’m not in the mood for that, his warmth calms my nerves. Staying like that for a minute until he pulls away, giving me a glass of water.
“What’s the time?”
Glancing at his watch and letting me know that it’s the next afternoon.
“Did you miss me, best friend?” Cade asked.
“No.”
“The lies you tell,” Rolling his eyes, “I know you did.”
“Then where were you when I got back yesterday?”
Shrugging he replies, “I was busy, we pilots have been delivering supplies.”
We sat in silence, as he waited for me to finish the glass of water.
“I’m taking you somewhere.”
“Where?”
In an instant, darkness fills my vision as he covers my eyes with a cloth, he answers, “It’s a secret.”
Guiding me out the room, until I’m outside, hearing the chatter of other agents and dismissing the fact they might be looking at us weirdly.
“I’ll fall, Cade.”
“Chill bff, I’m here I’ll catch you.”
I felt sharp pain as my head bumped into something. I heard him saying sorry to the person.
“Sorry about that.”
I really can’t trust him with my life.
After bumping into various people and almost twisting my knee, Cade took me down a path involving several turns.
“Really, Cade, where the hell are you taking me? If it’s another prank of yours Cade I swear-“
“We’re here, quit your whining.”
Removing the blindfold, adjusting my eyes to the sudden brightness, I see that he’s brought me to the dining hall. The room is covered in balloons and my favorite flowers - sunflowers - and a table full of food placed in the center of it all. Fellow agents smile at me, looking a bit silly with birthday hats on top of their formal suits.
Not having noticed Cade leaving my side, I see him bringing in a tall chocolate truffle cake with the words, “Happy Birthday Hira,” written in red.
Coming to a stop before me, he whispers, “Happy Birthday, love.”
“Thank you, you shouldn’t have,” celebrating your birthday is useless when you know that anytime, you’ll die.
“Who says agents can't celebrate their birthday?”
The lights flickered from the glowing yellow to dim blue light as the music began playing through the speakers that surround the room, everyone shuffles around.
“Enjoy this night birthday girl! It’s your party!”
With that, Cade excuses himself and joins everyone on the dance floor.
Food is my first priority as I head towards the table and see all of my favorite foods.
Wave approaches me, dressed in an almost-black, blue suit, “Enjoying yourself?”
“You look good in that suit, partner.”
Chuckling, pulling me close, leaning down to match my height he whispers, “Do you want your birthday gift, little kitten.”
Catching a whiff of alcohol, I conclude, “You’re drunk,” I state rather than asking.
“No, I’m perfectly fine, Hira.” he salutes.
Grinning at the drunk idiot in front of me, “Really? Let me see my gift then.”
He pulls me in, even closer, to the point where the heat from his body lights a spark in me. His breath hitting my lips, arms moving, trapping me between the table and him, he simply gazes at me. Pools of copper brown move from my eyes and fall on my lips, making me swipe my tongue across the bottom.
Using his arms, he pulls me up towards him, his lips meeting mine.
And I kissed him back.
I, Agent Nova, kissed my superior Agent Wave, and I’m not regretting it…or not?

It all started with a girl named Hira Callan, entering my life. Let me take you back a few years ago... THE NIGHT SKY, VOID of any stars, embracing a deep blue hue, the moon illuminating within the room. The glow of the television provides the primary source of light, brightening the surrounding with pale blue light. Series of snippets, various interviews, and a headline at the bottom reading, 'School Shooting, this month for the state of New York," urging a sense of panic to surge through my mind. Eyebrows furrowing, a feeling of despair settling in the pit of my stomach as the segment continues to provide more details. A shrill noise sounds, effectively blocking out the low murmurs of the television. The ringing of the burner phone catches my attention as I jump into action, halting the ringing and raising the device to listen. "Agent Wave," the mo
What do you think is the difference between a spy from an assassin? Assassins kill for whatever reason while spies obtain information. You’d think spies are more innocent, but let me tell you, there are dirty tricks behind the curtains. We lie, we fabricate stories, and we mislead people, manipulating them in our favor. We have tricks upon our sleeves while they go for the kill. -Hira ⟡ Hira ⟡ I woke up early and went to the training room after last night since it ended early. I focused on the dagger in my hand. I squinted my eyes as I calculate my distance and space to the board meters away from me, before throwing the dagger in my hand to the board. I smir
“Stop moving, sweetheart.” I flinched as Wave put something on my scar on my left hand. We are on the infirmary and he helped to treat my wound. He was cleaning and putting a bandage on it. Awkward tension filling the air. “Thank you, partner-in-crime.” I tried to joke. I thought of another thing to say….I should bring it out since I’m sober that time…“Did you remember last night?” He shushed me. “Don’t.” I raised my eyebrows at him, “So you remember...we should talk about it.” ”That was a mistake. I was drunk. Forget about it Hira. ” He stopped. “Don’t forget, I’m maybe your partner but I am also your superior. We should handle everything professionally.” I stared at him for a minute, carefully analyzing his eyes and his body language. “Of course,” I replied. He’s not fidgeting, shifting his eyes or anything, instead, he was looking at me directly. I’m still nothing compared to him, he’s a top agent after all. And that’s what irritates
A familiar woman showed up at us with her blonde hair and blue eyes and has the same facial features as Sigreen, my roommate. "Hi. I'm Isleen, your pilot for today. Remember, I’m prettier than my twin, Sigreen.” She said without blinking, before flipping her hair and walked away. I chuckled, still not used to her sassiness. Isleen and I worked already on a mission before and believe me or not, she hates the fact that she has the same face as her twin, claiming that she’s unique. “I agree, she’s prettier than her twin.” Wave said from beside me. I chuckled, “I gotta say the twins are working hard today, aren’t they?” Wave shrugged. Putting on my earmuffs and sunglasses, I closed my eyes as I feel the jet going on air. Being an agent in Cypher Agency has its perks. And one of them is the unlimited access to every country and travels, as our jets and airplanes can land on any airport, with the pilot showing his watch to the security a
“Are you in danger? I'm gonna come-” “No, I can handle this.” I cut off Wave. I could him feint panic laced in his voice but I remained calm. The man walked closer to me and I pointed my gun at him. “One more step and I’ll shoot.” The man raised his hands in the air, showing me his ID. “Relax, I am Agent Smith from the CIA, sent by the government.” I glanced at his ID and saw it was legit. “Don’t move, explain more.” “It seems the government wants to test your loyalty. I just came to inform you that.” With that, he left. Was that a threat from the government? I gotta tell Wave and Mr. Martins about it. *********** Despite the CIA’s threats last night, I came early to the club and wore my uniform. We contacted Mr. Martins about it and he told us to just finish our job first. Wave was not seeing to it and demande
“Good thing they didn’t hit the vitals.” I heard Mr. Martins’ voice. I was about to open my eyes but I grimaced in pain as I felt the sharp stabbing pain in my left leg. “They dared to fire at one of our agents? They are asking for war, Mr. Martins. We need to fight back.” Wave replied. “No, we still have the K-9 in our hands. What if the government will hire them against us? The k-9 are disloyal dogs, they will serve anyone just for amusement. This is what they want to happen.” “I know what you are planning, Agent Wave. Don’t you dare?” Mr. Martins left. Silence surrounded us until Wave spoke up. “I know you’re awake, open your eyes.” I opened my eyes and stuck my tongue out at him. “Boomer.” I looked around, I am in the agency’s infirmary. “How many hours have I been out?” “Two days.” “Oh…” I trailed off. “I can still walk right?” He looked at me. “I’m afraid not-” “What!?” I shrieked. “not for a few w
you may ask how I became an agent? Let me tell you everything in detail. I was taken aback by my memories years ago, memories that I had been trying to forget and bury. But these memories were too long but it felt like yesterday. "Bye, Dad," I yelled while descending the stairs. As soon as I reached the last stair, I was met with my dad's gaze. I went to kiss him on the cheek. "Okay then, wait for your driver he's going to drive you to scho--" before my father could finish his sentence, I cut it off. "--I'm fine, Dad. I can just walk and-" I said but it was my turn to be cut off by my father's powerful voice. "---Hira, my daughter." He looked at me pointedly. If someone is talking with my father, I’m certain that they will melt from the fear of his powerful voice. But I’m different. Living with him ever since I was born, I was used to his authoritative attitude. "I said you're going to wait for the driver." "But...I'm gonna be late-" I s
Everything happened so fast. We were attacked one day in our house, and I watched in horror as my dad got killed, and I can not even do anything. It was until then that a handsome young man in a suit appeared in front of me when I was almost stabbed. Like a knight in shining armor. I remember my father’s advice before. “Harris Miller?” I asked, confirming everything. He gave me a slight nod, and I got a bit relieved, my eyes tearing up. He held my hand and pulled me behind me, to protect me from the attacker. "Who do you work for?" I heard him asking the enemy. I tighten my grip on my savior’s arm, as he glared at the enemy, "I'd rather die." The enemy answered, spitting. "That can be arranged."My savior said, and he drew a line from one side of his throat to the other and push the body to the floor. I watched everything in silence, still in panic but forced myself to keep calm.
It all felt like a dream. Opening my eyes, I saw James beside me. He noticed me waking up so he ran to the door. “She’s awake already!” People came rushing into my bed and looked around. Nurses and doctors checked my state. The doctor sighed. “Thankfully, you just lost some blood. You would have been already dead if you took the whole hit.” And they left. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. “Huh?” James appeared again with some water and made me drink first. “I’m glad you’re awake now.” “How many days have I been out? What happened?” I asked, still confused. I looked around, it was the Cypher Agency’s hospital ward. Then I remembered my brother.
“We’ve arrived.” Announced one of our K-9 companions. “I want you all to stay here first until I give a signal. It’s me that they want.” I said to them and they nodded. All of us were prepared to win, even with only a little preparation time. I got out of the car and spotted the old warehouse. This was what the coordinates say according to the K-9’s investigations. I’ll find you, brother. Entering the warehouse, the place seemed eerily quiet...strangely quiet. I was not even attacked… Weird. Looking around, I headed straight and saw a stage in front. “Hello,
I don't want to side to anyone, not to my father, not to my brother... so I’ll build my own. “We don’t have time and I need back up to infiltrate.” I continued. “I don’t have a choice but to trust you guys. This blood in my hands is from the sniper woman who killed Coach Brian. No, I did not kill the sniper woman but she was killed by another person. So I need your help. Come with me first and I’ll explain everything. But first, I want you all to know I am not Zen.” Silence fell and they all just stared at me. Noah chuckled, breaking the silence. “We know that already.” I looked at him. He..they did? Wow, way to go. “Yeah, we knew it.” James nodded from beside me.
“Now as a celebration, let us all go eat dinner. I’ll treat you all.” Said Coach Brian when they were finished from the training. “Come and join us, Zen.” I stood up and joined them. When I heard a bullet striking from afar and Coach Brian fell on the ground, with blood gushing down his mouth. Looks like it started then. I had already expected this to happen. They got tired of bombs that they chose a sniper to hunt me now? I won’t let them win this time. This time, I’ll fight back. I touched my earpiece, “Uncle Rush looks like the enemy is not wasting their time. They shot our coach. ” I asked. “Yes, I already deployed our medics there. Come and go ho
Deciding what to do now, I’ve dialed Uncle Rush’s number. “Hello Zinnia? What is it?” I heard him asking from the other line. Smirking, I said. “Uncle Rush, I think I know what I’m going to do now.” “What is it?” He asked. “I’ll go back to school tomorrow.” Yes, I’ve decided now. That will be the first part of my plan. I could hear Uncle Rush sighing from the other line. “I’m glad that’s your decision. I hope you are well prepared for everything, Zen Alaric Malcolm,” he said, addressing me as my brother’s name. Unpacking all my stuff, I took a rest and slept early that night. Tomorrow for sure.
Think quick, Zinnia. Quick. How should I solve this? “Oh...I think my sister got home.” I said, going to my last resort and ending the call. Descending the stairs and going to the door, I fixed my appearance, letting my brunette hair cascade down my back, and didn’t wear my contact lenses to hide my blue eyes. It’s time to be myself then. Opening the door I spotted James and feigned a confused look and then smiled at him. “Oh, are you one of my brother’s friends?” I saw a blush that crept on James' cheeks as soon as he saw me. “Uhm...hi?” He greeted, sending a half-smile, seemingly nervous. I hope he won’t notice. But why is he nervous?
I contemplated whether I should answer this. Why now? I'm not in my undercover uniform! And if I answer this, he’ll know my true voice! “Can you give me my voice changer uncle?” I asked, now panicking.“It was brought back to the mechanics room on the third floor. It would take long for me to get it.” He answered as the phone still rang. I bit my lip, cursing under my breath. Damn it.I don’t have a choice then.Touching the answer button, I cleared my throat and pretended to cough. “Oh hey James, you called?” My heart was racing so fast in nervousness. Goodness! How did he even manage to get my phone number? I was sure I did not let them touch my phone...&ldq
My father’s eyes were like a hawk, and he glanced at the door to check if Uncle Rush was still there but saw that there was no sign of him, probably leaving us for privacy. I glanced at dad. “What did you want to talk about, dad?” He nodded and said. “I know it.” I raised my eyebrows in confusion, feeling chills. His authoritative and demanding side showing. I’m used to him getting like this but somehow, it feels new, “Know what, dad?” He glanced at the bedside table and checked to see some dust. He smirked. “Zen appeared here last night, didn’t he?” I gulped. How did he know? Oh right, he’s not Agent Wave of the Cypher Agency for nothing. Nothing escapes h
“You ask too many questions, sister.” Standing up, he leaned on me. “Wanna know a secret?” “A secret?” I breathed out. “I can free you from our parent's expectations.” He said. “Stop copying me. You are only hurting yourself. Soon, they will notice that you are not me.” “If I were you, I would just give up and join me. I just came to visit you just to say that. This is one last chance, Zinnia.” I looked at him in confusion. What? “What are you talking about Zen?” “Wanna go escape with me? Decide quickly, Zinnia.” I think I now have a bit of an idea of what he wants me to do. Stupid brother. What the hell are you planning?
