~Lucy’s Pov~
~Next morning~ The sounds of the alarm woke me from my deep sleep. I was reluctant to get out of bed to stop the alarm. My eyelids knew I didn't want to get up just yet. My body felt so heavy to lift off the bed but I managed to stop the alarm on my phone. Looking through my room I realized the mess I made yesterday night. I couldn't even remember what I was searching for. My eyes flashed to the envelope my best friend, Maya mailed. It contained 6 notes of 50-dollar bills. I was beyond grateful to her. This would cover for the week and even more. But then I remembered the confession I made to her. She was the only one I could trust with that information. But what now? I signed the papers already, I couldn't let my mom die because of my ego or desire for love before marriage. It was just for a year, I can do it. I picked up the contract file and glanced through it again, “Lucy, I hope you're making the right decision, Just a year…., but what if I lose myself in it?… What if a year changes everything?“ I muttered to myself. I searched for the card his lawyer gave me from my black handbag, so I could ask for directions to meet. I quickly dialed the number and someone picked up. I panicked not knowing what to say. Fortunately, a voice came through. “Hello?” a male voice responded. “Ermm hello… is this. Drey Jackson?” I asked, my voice shaking. “No this is Lawyer Williams” he corrected. “This is Lucy. I have signed the contract and I wanted to….” I felt very nervous, my palms started to sweat. Silence stretched between us and for a moment I thought he hung up. Then…. “Oh… just send your address to the number and a ride is going to come pick you up,” he stated firmly, his voice sharp and elegant. I was cut off from the call, my heart racing but I quickly got a grip of myself. “Omg Lucy this is real, you're getting married to Drey Jackson, a man you know nothing about other than his rudeness but he can completely change your life.” I swallowed hard, my throat becoming dry. ************ A chic black Bentley was parked outside in less than two hours. It attracted a lot of attention with its shiny surface gleaming under the sun making me shield my eyes. The engine sound was low, sending a split shiver down my spine. I have never seen such a luxurious car up close before, let alone inside one. I did my best to look elegant, after all, if I was going to be married to a billionaire I could at least look the part. I was dressed in a sexy red slit dress which snatched my figure perfectly, with a black handbag where I put the contract file and black heels that gave me just the right amount of height. I had put on a little makeup to brighten up my face. I styled my hair in a messy bun which was my go-to hairstyle and I always looked good in it. The driver stepped out and unlocked the door for me, my lips curled up into a smirk. “ Oh, princess treatment already? I hit the jackpot.” I chuckled, slipping inside with excitement. ************** In no time, we got the company. The car was parked at the garage, it was a private garage filled with different luxury cars. I opened my mouth in awe as I stepped out of the Bentley. The driver shot me a judgemental gaze, his expressions unreadable which made me uncomfortable. I adjusted my posture and cleared my throat. “Please…., this way.” The driver instructed me, pointing his hand to show me the direction. “Thank you” I gave a little courtesy and instantly regretted it. I walked behind him with pride, trying to shake off some little tension. We moved into the elevator and were heading to the 7th floor. I took slow breaths as I noticed my tension rising gradually. The elevator chimed and slowly opened. I tried hard to keep up with him because his steps were bigger. The office space extended endlessly, its sleek glass walls putting forth a cinematic view of the city skyline, making me feel both amazed and trivial." We got to the entrance of an office which I presumed was the CEOs’ The driver and I walked into the office. My blood pressure rose and my palms started to sweat as I clenched my fingers into a fist. I wished the ground would swallow me up. “You can do this Lucy, you can't afford to mess this up,” I whispered to myself. I had rehearsed my speech a thousand times but getting here, my mind went blank at the threshold of my fate. And there he was, sitting on his chair discussing with two other men. I caught his gaze and my heart dropped. “What are you wearing?” he asked, chuckling a bit. Heat crept up my neck hearing those words, the two other men turned to me also with judgy eyes. Drey approached me, spreading his arms to embrace me. Laughter danced in Drey’s eyes, but there was nothing funny about this moment—not to me. “Where are your bridesmaids?…. Oh, and you forgot the ring bearer” he mocked. I turned away from the hug, trying to adjust the strap of my red dress. The other two men looked at me with pity. “Oh c'mon guys don't look at me that way. She's ready to get married and I was only asking important questions.” “Am I here just to be humiliated or are we doing this or not?” I muttered sharply, staring straight into his eyes. “There! That's why I chose her, she's outspoken and confident, the perfect woman for the show!” Drey muttered while facing the two men seated. “Hello, Miss Lucy please come have your seat we've been waiting for you,” one of the men politely offered. I went to have my seat gracefully. “Thank you sir” I thanked him. “My name is James Michaelson and I believe you must have met Lawyer Williams,” he said and I nodded in agreement. “Enough of the pleasantries, hand over the papers,” Drey instructed me as he took his seat opposite us. His voice is smooth yet intimidating. Drey leaned back in his chair, his fingers running through his slick hair. His suit was tailored to perfection, giving him a silhouette look, his superior aura hovered in the room. Even his smirk felt like a calculated move. I My fingers shivered slightly as I reached into my bag, brushing through the smooth leather as I searched for the contract. My breath hitched when I felt… nothing. Panic swelled in me. I searched deeper, checking every enclosure, my heart pounding louder with each passing second. No. No. No. This is not happening. Drey raised a brow, amusement flickering in his sharp gaze. “Something wrong, Lucy?” I gulped hard, my throat completely dry. I forced a fearful smile, my voice barely above a whisper. “I… I think I left the contract at home.” Silence filled the room. Then Drey let out a slow, humorless chuckle, leaning back in his chair. “Well,” he spoke, his tone eerily calm. “That’s… unfortunate.” I didn’t miss the flicker of something dark in his eyes—something dangerous. And just like that, I knew… I had made a terrible mistake.~Lucy’s Pov~ “You’re not joking, right? You do realize how important this is, right?” Drey’s voice sent a cold shiver down my spine. “You want to pose as a Billionaire's wife and you can't even keep track of a single file? Do you know how this looks for you?” My heart pounded like I was in a race. I could hear it in my ears. I scratched the side of my dress, refusing to let him see me panic. “I understand how this looks, but I'll fix it.”“James, can you please take her home?” He instructed his secretary. I froze.Mr Williams and James stared at me like a child who had lost a very important piece of jewelry. I knew I made a mistake but I wondered how. James cleared his throat and began. “Sir, perhaps she forgot it when she was preparing to come. Can we arrange for Miss Lucy to retrieve the document within an hour?” “And…sir I'm sorry but you've been calling me James for days now. It's Maxwell. I know this is stressing you out and your friend not being here to help must be frustra
~Lucy’s Pov~I’ve always hated the sound of machines continuously beeping. But since then my mother got ill I’ve gotten quite used to it. I walked into the intensive care where she laid connected to tubes and machines that hummed steadily."Mom," I called out, my voice shaking. ”I’m here now. Please open your eyes. I should have been earlier, I'm sorry.” Tears began to fall freely down my face.Just then, Dr. Holmes entered, followed by a nurse holding a writing board in her left hand. “Miss Lucy,” he called out, his tone low showing concern in it.From that moment I knew he did not bring good news. I bowed my head looking at my mom because looking at him would make me feel worse.“This is a very difficult thing to say but we have no choice but to discuss it. He continued.I turned to him, my heart was racing. "What’s going on? I thought you said she was getting better?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, trying so hard to suppress my tears but it was not working. "I’m afraid
~Lucy’s Pov~I hurriedly ran through the pavement towards the bar, my footsteps echoing against the walls. It’s been a rough morning, and running late to work was bad for me. I recently got this job and messing it up would be depressing. As I pushed open the door to the bar, I spotted Daya."Lucy! I was getting worried. What happened this time?” Daya asked as she walked towards me.“What's going on? Where is Mr. Mark?” I asked while using my eyes to search the bar."He's been walking around, mumbling about discipline and employees who can’t be trusted to show up on time. It’s not pretty, Lucy." Daya added, her voice low so as not to draw attention from other employees. My stomach twisted, but I had more weight on my mind than I was already carrying. After scanning the area, I walked briskly towards the counter, where I saw Mr. Mark coming from his office."Good morning Mr Mark," I greeted him, trying to sound organized. “I apologize for being late. I had a situation I had to deal with

I was sitting alone on the plush velvet chair in the corner. She was dressed in a white shirt and short dark skirt with a neat ponytail hairstyle the way a bartender would dress. “You have such nerve to come in here and utter such rubbish.” I replied, giving her a dead look. For a brief moment, I studied her with curiosity. I was assessing her, I knew it. And I was betting everything on the fact that she was only trying to seduce me. “I’m sorry I eavesdropped while you were on a call,” she continued. “I could feel your frustration through your tone. And a marriage can most definitely help you out right now. I’ve seen the news, it does not look nice at all.”
~Lucy’s Pov~ ~~~Next morning~~~My head spun as I woke up as a result of the continuous banging on my door. I was in a state of fright but I managed to stand up to check who was at the door. “We know you're in there!!” The banging continued. A man’s voice came from behind the door, making my stomach churn.“This is the right address so come open the damn door right now before we smash it down.” One of them said,I staggered backward as the door slammed open. My heart raced as two men walked into my apartment. The man in front had a scar running from his eyebrow down to his jaw, while the other, came with a briefcase, dressed in a black suit. One would think he was a lawyer."You’ve got five minutes to come up with what you owe, or you'd not be happy with the way things may turn out" The briefcase man commanded, his face laced with excitement as he scanned my tattered apartment. My breath caught in my throat. I knew exactly what they were talking about, but the money… I didn’t have
~Drey’s POV~~The previous day~“What do you mean Lillian?” I asked James, who became more inquisitive than I expected. “I only asked for a fucking lawyer James!! Why do you like butting into my personal life!?.” My temper rose to hear him mentioning that bitch’s name. I only see Lillian as a toy who I can call whenever I need some alone time. But for a wife? Hell fucking no!!“I’m sorry Boss… It’s just that I.. I don’t know who else you might have in mind to fit the role of a wife. I just thought……” James tried to explain himself. “Stop thinking and do what I asked you.” I roughly interrupted him. James stood up to leave my office, his face was laced with disappointment. I have never yelled at him like that in a very long time. So yeah I think I outdid it this time. “Erm… hold on. I’m .. I’m….. “ I let out a huge breath. “You know I don’t like hearing that bitches name. She’s not the one I have in mind okay? Never would she be!” I reluctantly said, rubbing my hands through m
~ Lucy’s pov~ I stood at the door struggling to get my keys from my bag. The tingling sound of the keys gave me a quick ease-up. As I turned the keys to get into my apartment, someone called out my name. “Lucy Thank God I found you today, I’ve been waiting for your arrival.” An older woman muttered as she approached me. “Good day….I mean….Good evening ma’am. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting all these while.” I stuttered to reply to her. “ But ma’am I just got back from work now and I’m really tired. Maybe another time, please. “ I replied to her. “No No Lucy you know why I’m here. In case you didn't hear what I said, let me requote.. eh…ehm!” She cleared her throat to continue. “I heard you for the first time ma’am and I know why you’re here. ~Maya’s Pov~I pushed the door to my office open, and the smell of processed papers and coffee filled the room. It's always a chaotic day at the firm but I always get excited to open new cases.“Good day everyone,” I greeted my colleagues with a soft voice. Few of them responded but I did not care. “Morning Miss Sinclair!” Jason calls out from his desk with a smile on his face. His desk was filled with case files and sticky notes, he always strives in chaos. “I’ve always told you to stop calling me that, just Maya is fine,” I replied with a little smile, heading over to my desk. “I see you have a lot on your desk today, as always.” I let out a smirk. “What's new today?” I asked while dragging a chair closer to him. “Well here is something juicy, your specialty.” Jason searches through the files in front of him, giving me a crooked smile.“Hmmm, what is it?” I asked with enthusiasm. He hands over a file to me. “Here is the rundown. We've got a client looking to sue a construction

~Maya’s Pov~I tried calling Lucy back but the call was not connecting. I was still stunned by the conversation I just had with Lucy.“Grant Pharmaceuticals? No no, I hope I heard her wrong. Why the hell will she do such a thing without contacting me?” I murmured. A mix of disappointment and hurt hovered over me. Desperation has led my best friend to such a ruthless man. I don't know him personally but I know of the damage his company has caused over the years. It wasn't news of the scandals related to that Pharmaceutical Company. I dialed her number several times, frustration mounting as the call failed over and over again. “I need to reach her. I need to warn her on time.” *******One year agoI walked through the corridor of the ICU department heading to visit Lucy’s mom, Regina. Lucy was ahead of me, her face full of exhaustion. We entered the room and headed toward Regina's bed. The faint sound of machines humming welcomed me, the door swinging behind with a soft creak. I app
