JUNE
The distant hum of the traffic matched June's restless thoughts. Should she run? hide? If she did, Ollie wouldn't find her for sure. Quite frankly, she couldn't understand why she was here, waiting for him. She'd only agreed to the ride to get him off his back, not that she meant it, right? So why was her feet somehow rooted here and ummoving? Getting into his car was probably a wrong move. What if he misread this? Or worse, what if he expected something in return for a ride? As the thought churned her mind, June decided leaving was the best option. It was better to be gone before he showed up. She started walking away when she noticed a sleek sport car pulled up beside her. She didn’t have to look to know it was him, but she didn’t stop walking either. The car window rolled down, and that smooth, velvety voice she hated how good it sounded drifted her way. "Didn’t take you for a promise-breaker." She rolled her eyes. Damn his voice. "You were taking too long." she muttered, though he hadn’t been. He was early, if anything. Ollie pulled over, and blocked her path, before stepping out. He rounded the car with this confident stride that only annoyed her more, opened the passenger door, and looked down at her. Even much more annoying, she had to tilt her head up to hold his gaze. Why did he have to be so damn tall? June hesitated. "This ride's free, right?" A beat passed before he answered with an unreadable face. "Yes?" "Why the hesitation?" Her eyes narrowed. "I'm perplexed." He scratched his jaw. "Why would i charge you after I offered you a ride?" "Oh." June visibly relaxed. She clearly didn't want to misunderstand anything here. "Right" June climbed in and murmured a reluctant "thank you." Few minutes into the drive, June found herself giving in to sleep. The car's warmth enveloped her in a cozy way that she hated to admit. She was tired from working long shifts since early morning and his car looked like the perfect place to relax. The inside of his car was polished, clean and looked well taken care of. His, clean, woodsy, sophisticated scent filled the space around her. She was surprised that his car was in a good condition. Men like him didn't always care about what they own because they could just buy another one in a blink. This didn't mean he was any different from them, though. They were all still the same, cocky, very wealthy and entitled. Also annoying. Very annoying. Particularly him. As they drove, the gentle purr of the engine and the warmth made it impossible to keep her eyes open. She fought it at first, blinking rapidly, but the exhaustion deep in her bones won. Ollie's voice cut through the haze. "Long day?" She jolted awake, her heart jumping. "What?" Her voice was sharp, too sharp, but he didn’t flinch. "What?" She said in a less agitated manner. "I asked if you’ve had a long day." His tone was calm. "You have no idea." She sighed and reclined further into the seat, finally letting her body give in to the comfort. It wasn’t like she’d had much choice today. It was all Ollie's fault. He wouldn't leave her if she didn't agree. So it was also his fault that she was enjoying herself. "If you’d like, I could offer you a ride regularly." he said lazily, as if it wasn’t a big deal. June was quick to say a "no." She allowed him to give her a ride because he was persistent and relentless. This was never happening again. The next time she saw him, she was ignoring him. "This is a one time thing." "Sure it is." She ignored him and look out of the window. Even she knew there was never a one time thing with Ollie. He was too thick headed. To be frank, he was the only decent person she'd talked to today. Their conversation almost put a smile on her face. Almost because June would never smile to a man's face. As they stopped at a red light, the billboard for Queen Burger caught her eye. Her stomach growled, loud enough that she glanced at Ollie, hoping he hadn't heard. She’d barely eaten since morning, and the thought of sinking her teeth into a burger made her mouth water. Ollie asked, like he’d read her mind. "Want one?" "Yes." The word slipped out without a single thought. "No." She sat up and reverted her answer immediately. "No." She shook her head. A ghost of a smile tugged at his lips, but he said nothing as the light turned green and he steered the car into the Queen Burger parking lot. June frowned. "I said no." "I’m getting one for myself." He shrugged, already parking the car. "Oh," she sank back into her seat. When he returned with two burgers and extended one towards her, she eyed him. "Go ahead, it's for you," he said. The delicious aroma made her want to snatch it out of his hand, but she looked away. "I don't want it." A blatant lie. She wanted it more than anything. "It’s rude to eat mine and not offer you one," She shot him a side glance. The sight of the wrapped burger almost made her go back on her words. Almost. "I said no." "Would you have gotten yours alone?" Ollie said. "I didn't take you for a selfish person, June." "I wouldn't have." She shot back, telling on herself. "Then take it" With a reluctant sigh, June took it from his hand. "Because you begged me to." "If it makes you breath better." He leaned back and she rolled her eyes. The moment she bit into the burger, a satisfied groan escaped her. God, she missed this so much. She had to slow herself to avoid devouring the whole thing in seconds. When she was finished, her stomach was full and her mind was quieter. She was even in a relatively better mood than minutes ago. God, the wonders eating a satisfying junk do. Ollie handed her a milkshake from the console. "Chocolate peanut butter?" she asked. "Yeah." She eyed him suspiciously. "It’s my favorite." "I'm not a psychic, June. I just asked what milkshake's perfect after a long day." "Thanks." She took a sip, the creamy, salty-sweet taste drawing another contented sigh from her. When she was done draining it, she reached for her bag. "I should probably pay you back." She fumbled for her phone. "Ah, because when you offer people things, you always make them pay you back." He said, teasingly. "I don't." She bit out. "I don't either." He says as if he was unfazed by how defensive she got. Comforting silence enveloped them throughout the ride. When she opened her eyes back, the car had stopped moving. For some reason, her heart didn't skip a fearful beat when her eyes began to make sense of her unfamiliar interior. “We’ve arrived at the address you gave me, but I don’t see a house around,” When she turned to Ollie he was glancing around. June undid her seatbelt and sat up. "Where I live isn't far from here." When his eyebrows furrowed, she added. "You didn’t think I’d let a stranger know where I live." His face lit up with grin. "Love it when you put me in my place, baby." "I'm not your baby." She snapped, but he just shrugged it off, unfazed. She shook his head at him and turned toward the door, pushing it open. "Bye." When she was out, she knocked at the window. As the window rolled down, June leaned in slightly. "Thanks." She said while avoiding his gaze. "For the ride and the burger." She grumbled before quickly walking away without another glance back.JUNE June’s lips curved into a small, involuntary smile despite her best efforts to stay indifferent. God, he had a way of getting under her skin. She would be sure to completely avoid him when next she saw him. When she got near the apartment complex she lived, the moment was soon replaced by a souring mood. Of course, the universe couldn't let her have this one night. It would be too much. She walked past her mother, completely ignoring her, but then her mother followed her in staggering steps. "Those little fuckers wouldn't let me into the house." Her mother complained with think anger. June’s jaw tightened, her hand clenched into a fist as her frustration mounted. "I own the fucking house, yet they locked me out." She spat. “Those little fuckers are your children,” June shot back sharply, whirling around to face her mother. “And I own the house. I’ve been paying rent for years.” Her mother waved her off dismissively. "Common June, you are still as cranky as ever."
JUNE The excitement June felt after making over two thousands in one week was unreal She couldn't wait to break the news to Amy when she got home. Her sister had been on cloud nine all week, taking her practice seriously, doing everything she could to prepare for the competition. She talked about it nonstop, and watching Amy's dedication brought a rare joy to June. Unlike Aiden, Amy wasn’t zealous about school, but when it came to swimming, she was a natural talent, which she hadn’t taken it seriously until now. June didn’t want to be the overbearing sister, but she was worried about how aimless Amy seemed towards life. So seeing her this committed about the competitiom was a delight. It had only fueled June to take on all kinds of jobs just to make the entry f*e for the competition, and she in fact did. Though the sleepless nights had taken their toll on her, she didn’t regret a thing. It had been worth it. June turned back to the counter, and offered the cup to the man standing
JUNEFinding Echo wasn’t hard, since it was one of a kind in New York, and June didn’t have to tell the taxi driver twice before he drove her there. Her fingers tightened around her phone as her gaze rose to the towering casino building. The glass wall gleamed under the city lights, making the four-story building of the casino seem almost otherworldly. The opulent appearance of the casino scared her. What the fuck was John doing in an expensive casino like this? She tugged the straps of her baggy jeans, feeling completely out of place as she moved around the line of sleek cars moving in slow procession. She wasn’t used to the luxury that surrounded her but she squared her shoulders, lifted her chin and steeled herself. She had bigger concerns than worrying about whether she belonged here or not.As she approached the revolving doors, stares followed her, judging and scrutinizing her, but she gave no fuck about them. Not when her brother was set to ruin both her life and her sister's.A
JUNEJune sighed as frustration bubbled inside of her, threatening to spill over. He just had to be the only one who could help her."So..." He leaned forward, invading her space in a way that made her suck in a breath. He trailed a finger along her shoulder. "Do you want my help or not?"She swatted his hand away with a glare "Want me to go on my knees and beg?"An amused smile spread across his face. "Goddamn, June. A simple yes would have done the trick."She cleared her throat. "I guess, yes."He flicked a finger against her ear softly, making her scowl. "Who are you looking for? Your boyfriend?"She didn't have the time to explain the details to Ollie so she agreed with his absurd assumption. "Yes." Bold of him to think anyone would want to be with her.He nodded nonchalantly. "Let's go."She spun around, deciding to wear her cropped top properly. She didn't want to follow after him looking so out of place compared to his pristine, and perfect look. She had her hand around the hem
OLLIE Ollie should have collected June’s number instead of giving her his, knowing the probability of her calling him was almost zero. At least, now he would have been able to reach her. He’d gone back to the security room and confirmed that she found her boyfriend, but for some reason, Ollie still wanted to know how it went. ‘Boyfriend.’ The word left a sour taste in his mouth. He’d never felt such deep hatred for a stranger than he felt presently for June’s boyfriend. The rage that twisted inside him was irrational and almost primal. He didn’t know this guy, had never even seen him, yet he wanted to hurt him—badly. He could already tell that her boyfriend was a jerk. June, coming to the casino looking disheveled because of him had Ollie’s blood boiling, and he’d never wanted to smash someone’s face in more than he did now. Ollie prided himself on not caring about petty things like this, but here he was, fuming over a woman who wasn’t his. What was his life turning into? T
OLLIEOllie’s head lifted as the door to his office swung open with a muted creak. Wearily, he rubbed his eyes with his thumbs, feeling the grits of sleepless nights. “Do you have it?”“Yes.” Seth strode towards him, pausing at the edge of the desk before holding out the file containing June’s details. He couldn’t turn a blind eye to it. He needed to know what really happened and why June was crying? When last had he been this worried about someone?Seth had worked for him for years, handling tasks his secretary couldn't. Seth rarely ever talked and was stoic to the fault. One of the many reasons the both of them lasted together for this long—never too many words, never too many questions.Ollie’s fingers closed over the file, the soft crinkle of paper filling the room as he flipped through the pages.“It’s her brother,” Seth said flatly with no further explanation, but Ollie already understood what he meant. He looked up from his file. “Her brother?” Not her boyfriend." His voice hel
JUNEJune had gone through the excruciating, tormenting moment of telling Amy that she couldn’t cover the entry f*e for the swimming competition because John had squandered it and left her penniless—though she’d skipped that part—. It felt as though she’d swallowed shards of glass when the words left her lips.Amy hadn’t questioned her, she’d shrugged, “I didn’t really want to go anyway. It was just some stupid competition.” But June had seen the spark die in Amy’s eyes even as she tried to brush it off. She, more than anyone, knew her sister’s genuine excitement and how much she actually wanted to do this. Watching Amy’s enthusiasm fade felt like a knife to her gut. The one time Amy took something seriously, June had failed her. Again. She despised the recurring feeling of being a disappointment to the twins. She worked so hard to be able to provide for the twins, yet, it was never enough, she was never enough. The twins were always so understanding and too mature for their age. They
OLLIEOllie’s jaw tightened as he entered the hall, the stiff collar of his shirt choking him as much as the forced pleasantries he was about to endure.Coffered ceilings adorned with plastered medallions, glossy hardwood floors, people draped in expensive attire, and the soft melody of a grand piano playing in the background—it was a typical high-class event. Nothing more than a showcase for the wealthy. To Ollie, it felt like a hollow performance. This charity gala had zero ties to the people in need; it was just a platform for elites to network and flaunt their statusIt would be hypocritical of him to pretend he didn’t benefit from these connections, but it didn’t change the fact that the event felt empty at its coreHe hated being here, but his stepmother, Rachel, had hosted the event. He’d dodged too many of her invitations already, and avoiding this one wasn’t an option. He didn't have anything against her, but they weren't close when they lived under the same roof. She'd been t
JUNEJune woke with a satisfied smile. The same smile that had rested on her lips when she’d drifted off against Ollie’s chest after he’d fucked her senseless. The soreness between her thighs and the scent of sex still clinging to the sheets were undeniably proof.Burying her face into Ollie’s sheets, she inhaled deeply, a soft hum vibrating in her throat. God, it should be illegal for someone to smell this good.Still half-dazed in the golden afterglow of sleep, she reached out, and her fingers blindly searched for the familiar heat of his body. Instead, they met cool, empty sheets. Her eyes fluttered open. Empty.A knowing sigh left her lips. There was only one place Ollie could be. She’d bet her last dime he was in his study, hunched over his laptop, completely engrossed in work.Jeez, he was a chronic workaholic. Most people worked to survive. Ollie worked because he thrived on it.Shaking her head, June slid out of bed, stretching before padding toward his sanctuary. The moment sh
OLLIEHe opened his eyes to the soft glow of the moonlight filtering through the window, and there on the couch was June. She lay curled, chest rising and falling in every breath. The soft curve of her face was bathed in silver light, and for a moment, he forgot everything else.A smile tugged at his lips as he watched her.He stared at her for a long while, just savoring the sight of her, feeling a rare sense of peace. Finally with a reluctant sigh, he slid off the bed, and moved toward her quietly. When he reached her, he bent down slowly, carefully intending to lift her into his arms and move her to the bed. But just as his fingers brushed her shoulder, she stirred. Her eyelids fluttered, and she blinked in confusion as she met his gaze in the dim light. “Sorry,” he whispered. “I woke you up.”She groggily shifted, a frown pulling at her lips. “What?” Her voice was thick with sleep, and her eyes were still hazy. She quickly reached up, pressing her hands to his forehead. “How’s yo
JUNEJune knew Ollie to an extent, and she knew that when he was hurting, he would retreat into himself like a hermit. He would never reach out. He was stubborn like that. He would isolate himself until it passed over.Today was the anniversary of his mother’s passing, and that couldn’t actually be easy for him. Not that he would admit it aloud. So, June took it upon herself to invite herself into his house, hoping her presence might help him.It wasn’t exactly an intrusion. Ollie had given her the access card himself, but that didn’t stop her from feeling nervous. Her heart pounded and her hands were clammy. Ollie’s reaction couldn’t be predicted and this could go very wrong. Maybe it was just her overthinking talking, but still. She had been waiting for over an hour now, sitting alone in his living room. Calling him wasn’t an option, she was too anxious to face his reaction over the phone. So she waited as each passing minute amplified the tension in her chest. After what felt like
OLLIEThe longer Ollie stared at his late mother’s memorial picture, the more he realized that he shared zero resemblance with her—except for his eyes.Every defining feature he possessed came from his father, man he despised with every fiber of his being. It wasn’t just unfortunate. It was a curse. A colossal, cruel curse. To be the living reflection of the man who had haunted his life? It was enough to drive anyone insane. He should’ve felt something standing here—grief, sadness, anything. But instead, all he could do was compare. His mother’s face, captured forever in a frame, and his own. No sorrow. No anger. Just an aching numbness, lodged so deep in his bones it felt like it had always been there. There was a time when he would’ve been furious. When moments like this would’ve filled him with rage. But the older he got, the more that fire cooled, replaced by grim understanding. His father had hollowed his mother out. Shattered her at the height of her success, then dragged her dow
JUNEJune didn’t protest, didn’t question him. The only thing she knew was how badly she wanted to feel him between her legs.He moved between her legs, fitting his broad frame in the space she made for him. Slowly, he bent down, and slid her legs over his shoulders. She sucked in a breath in anticipation as he traced the soft curves of her thighs. When his fingers hooked around her thong and pulled it aside, she felt a flush spread over her skin, her body tingling with raw desire.A low, throaty groan that Ollie let out vibrated through her, his breath caressed her pussy. Ollie didn’t rush as he alternated between teasing her clit and sliding deep inside of her. He dragged out her pleasure until she was a mess of frustration and needs.“Ollie, please,” she whispered “I need…” She bit her lip, unable to finish her sentence as another nibble of his teeth on her clit cut off her thoughts completely.“What do you need?” he murmured against her.He knew exactly what he was doing, and it
JUNE“Are you even listening?”June heard Lola’s voice vaguely“Of course,” she said on autopilot as her lips curved into a small smile at the text Ollie had sent her. It had been a long day filled with back-to-back shifts, and she could finally reply to his message.“What was I saying?”Lola said, and June blinked, raising her gaze to meet Lola’s. Her arms were crossed over her chest, and a frown was etched on her face.“Uhm…” June’s voice trailed off as her eyes darted away as though the answer might magically appear in the air between them.“See? You weren’t listening.” Lola’s frown deepened as she gestured toward her with a pointed look. “Ever since you got yourself a boyfriend, you’ve become insufferable.”“I haven’t,” June gasped dramatically.Lola shook her head as her eyes narrowed. “Knew there was a reason I didn’t like him,” she muttered under her breath, but it was loud enough for June to hear. “He’s here to steal my girlfriend.”June rolled her eyes at her friend’s dramatic
OLLIEIt had been four weeks since Italy, and he’d never been happier than he was now.Crazy.He never thought he’d describe himself as happy. It felt strange, but he was.Every day, he found himself genuinely looking forward to something. Or, rather, someone. At twenty-eight, it felt surreal, as if life had suddenly clicked into placeBeing with June made sense. She was the spark that lit up his once colorless life. The vibrance of his monotonic life. It was like stepping into the light after walking through a long dark tunnel. Everything with her felt new, strange, and calming all at once.Over the past few weeks, their relationship had blossomed. They’d gone on dates, talked late into the night, learning about each other. And yeah, they’d had sex. A lot of it.But now, they were countries apart. Two days, and he already missed his girlfriend like hell. He used to look forward to this annual conference, but not anymore. Now, he just wanted to be home with her.Sure, they’d stayed in
JUNEWhen he finally pulled back, it wasn’t far. His forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling in the inches of space between them. His hands slid down to her waist, and his fingers splayed possessively as if he feared she might vanish if he let go.A wide smile spread across her face. To her delight, Ollie smiled too. His smile was warm and boyish. The moment felt surreal. For so long, she’d convinced herself that Ollie would never see her that way, but here he was, looking at her like she was the only thing that mattered in the world, like it had always been her for him.His hands slid lower, pausing at the hem of her dress. His silver eyes searched hers for permission, and when she gave the slightest nod, he pulled the fabric over her head in one fluid motion.Stepping back, he let his gaze roam over her. His eyes gleamed with an intensity that made her pulse race.“You look divine, baby,” he breathed.June’s cheeks flushed under his scrutiny as heat pooled in her belly.
JUNEThe awkward silence continued to press down on June as they made their way back to the house. The sidewalk was bathed in golden glow of the lampposts by each side. Italy had been beautiful, and she had enjoyed herself—thanks to Ollie—but now, everything felt off.It all started with her suggestion that they stay in touch. A harmless attempt to hold onto him without appearing too eager, yet it had landed all wrong. Now, she couldn’t escape the endless loop of overthinking, and the nagging tension at the back of her head made it worse. Why had he even told her he liked her? If he hadn’t said that, she wouldn’t have been so desperate to push for more. But now, it felt like a mistake, and she was sure he regretted it.He probably meant it platonically. But damn, how her heart had soared when he said it. It had leaped, somersaulted in her chest, butterflies spreading through her belly. She had forced herself to calm down, knowing all along that it wasn’t meant the way she had hoped. Ho
