  Celeste

As Christmas approached, so too did the Moon Goddess Festival ball. It was an annual celebration on campus, one where all my classmates would pair up for a night of laughter and dancing. I was the only one who didn't deserve it. My brother and everyone around me reminded me of that.

It was pathetic, really. I was eighteen, legally an adult and a freshman in college, but I was stuck under my brother’s thumb.

“Celeste, another round!” Jack's voice cut through the clamor, an unspoken command. I picked up the pitcher of punch sitting on the kitchen counter and obeyed.

Laughter echoed around the room, sharp and poignant, another reminder of my outsider status. My brother's friends, arrogant and self-assured, moved about the room in a buzz of excitement, their eyes filled with amusement each time they glanced my way.

Jack, as always, was the ringmaster of this circus, commanding the room and myself with equal authority.

I had no choice but to obey my brother. He was my legal guardian, and he made sure that I never forgot that fact. He was a lot bigger and stronger than me, and he always made sure that I never forgot that, too.

If I ever disobeyed my brother, things would turn sour very quickly; I learned that at a young age. I was eighteen now, but I was still inferior to him. He practically made all of my choices for me—everything from the way that I dressed to who I hung out with.

It wasn’t like I had much of a choice, though. I was always a bit chubby, ever since I was little. I had ugly brown, frizzy, thick hair that fell in a pyramid-shape on my shoulders; my brother always cut it for me because he didn’t want to waste money on a hairdresser.

To make matters worse, my eyesight was shit. I wore glasses all of the time, and not even the cute kind of glasses because, once again, Jack didn’t want to spend the money on nice frames.

Even my eyes were different colors; one was brown and one was green. It was an interesting feature, I guessed, but I hated it. I just wanted to look normal, like all the other girls.

For that same reason, all of my clothes were hand-me-downs from Jack. Believe it or not, wearing baggy men’s clothes made me look even bigger than I was.

As I walked around the living room and poured punch into people’s glasses, I could feel their judgmental eyes on me.

They talked about me aloud, commenting on my poor posture, my ugly side profile, my fat thighs.

Maybe they didn’t think that I could hear them over the loud music, or maybe they just didn’t care. It was probably the latter. I uncomfortably tugged my shirt down harder to keep myself covered and kept my head down as I continued my task.

Going to the prom, wearing a pretty dress, holding a boy's hand, and enjoying the stares of the crowd?

That kind of treatment could belong to anyone. Except me, and I willingly accepted my fate.

Even though I was an ugly virgin that no one wanted in reality, and no one would even ask me to prom. But online? No one knows what I look like. Who can't have their own dirty secrets?

Shhh - keep it for me.

A soft vibration in my pocket provided a momentary escape from the chaos. It was a message from him—the enigma I'd been sexting for weeks.

His words had always offered a temporary sanctuary, a digital world where I was desired, not dismissed. He was one of several in my history of anonymous online sexting, but he was the most recent and the one who I had felt most smitten with.

Scurrying into the kitchen, I set the empty pitcher of punch down on the counter and checked over my shoulder. I was alone. I opened the message, and my heart pounded against my ribs.

Pics. Now. Show your breasts. Or it's over.

Fear twisted in my gut as I read the message. The anonymous comfort of our sexting, the secret thrill of our encounters, had never crossed this boundary.

But his ultimatum was clear, and I had to obey. I didn’t want our arrangement to end; as a pathetic virgin who had no realistic future of ever losing her virginity, I was desperate for attention from guys like this.

For a few moments, I chewed my lip as I glanced around. Jack was in the living room with his friends.

I glanced around the corner of the kitchen door to see him grinding up against a hot girl, grabbing her hips and pulling her slender body closer.

Jack wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing. He was just as drunk as everyone else, and so I decided to take my chances.

I quietly slipped up the stairs, down the hall and into the bathroom. My hands trembled as I unbuttoned my shirt, my pulse echoing loudly in my ears.

Just as I was about to snap a picture, though, I realized that I was forgetting one necessary piece to my little puzzle.

In the darkness of the bathroom, I groped around inside the vanity before my fingers brushed the lace trim and pointy cat ears of the object that I was looking for. It was a discarded masquerade mask—a remnant from a past Halloween party.

I kept it shoved into the back of the vanity, where Jack was unlikely to stumble across it. I had it saved just for occasions like this, because no one could know my online persona. It was my little secret; I had an account dedicated to sexting guys anonymously.

Even though I was chubby, guys liked my big breasts, and so I had sent more than one nude picture in my time. This mask came in handy on those occasions. No one could know who I was. No one.

With the bathroom lights off and the flash on my phone on, I angled my camera towards my chest, attempting to capture an image that could satisfy his demand.

A few pictures were snapped. I paused in between each one.

“God,” I whispered to myself as I swiped through the pictures and shook my head. “I can’t get a good angle…”

My phone buzzed again, and a notification popped up on the screen.

  I’m waiting… Time is ticking.

I chewed my lip as I read the text. Sighing, I lifted my phone again, my thumb poised to hit the shutter button. I arched my back as much as I could, stuck my my lower lip out in a pout, and pushed my breasts together.

Suddenly, a voice, groggy yet familiar, shattered the silence.

  “Hey… what's going on here?”

A gasp escaped my lips as I spun around. There was no one there; at least, that was what I thought at first. But then my eyes wandered downwards, toward the bathtub, and I finally caught sight of my unwitting companion.

He was laying in the tub in a drunken stupor with one leg dangling over the edge. He was shielding his eyes from the flash on my phone and squinting, making a face of annoyance.

“What are you doing in here?”

His voice was groggy and thick, but I recognized it immediately. I scrambled to shut my phone off, casting the bathroom in complete darkness once more now that the flash was off. My heart pounded in my chest like a war drum inside my rib cage.

I knew him. This was no ordinary partygoer, no stranger; this was my brother’s best friend and the hockey team’s current captain… Matt. The sexiest man I've ever been around, bar none.

  And he had seen everything.

CelesteAn icy wave of shock washed over me as I stared into Matt's eyes.I was exposed, vulnerable in front of my brother's best friend. He was confused and a bit too bleary-eyed for my liking. I was half-expecting an eruption of laughter, but instead, he took a deep breath.“I'm sorry,” he slurred slightly, pushing himself upright against the back of the bathtub. “I had a few too many drinks and needed to escape for a bit... I didn't mean to scare you.”Still paralyzed by shock, I watched as he raked a hand through his messy, dark hair. “I don't think I've seen you around before,” he continued, “but you've got a pretty incredible figure. Should I leave?”My heart pounded in my chest. He didn't recognize me. Matt, the attractive, popular, untouchable hockey captain, was in my bathroom, unaware of my identity as his best friend’s little sister, and—was he flirting? The air between us was electric, the silence so heavy it was almost tangible. A hot flush crept up my neck.“Well?” he as

I pushed Matt away abruptly, slapping his hand away from my mask before he could remove it. “This was a one-time thing,” I stammered, hastily buttoning up my blouse. “I want to keep the mystery.” “But wait,” Matt protested, reaching out a hand. “Leave me some way to contact you. I—” “No,” I replied, cutting him off. “Like I said. A one time thing.” Matt shot me a pained look at I finished buttoning my shirt and climbed out of the bathtub. My cheeks were still red from the way that he made me feel, but I knew that it couldn’t happen again. He was popular on campus, and he was my brother’s best friend. It would be doom for both of us if we did this ever again. I could only imagine the hate he would receive for fucking Celeste, the fat, ugly girl. “Please,” he said, standing. Within minutes, a message appeared.“Have we met before?” he asked.I chewed my lip, thinking for a moment before replying, “No. Last night was my first time at one of Jack's parties.”“So you know Jack?” He inquired, his digital words laced with curiosity.I paused, my fingers hovering over the keys, but I didn't respond. How could I respond? What if I said that I did know Jack, and Matt asked him about it? Jack would see right through it and would expose me immediately. I would be ruined.“It's okay,” he wrote after a few minutes of silence, noticing that I had left him on read. “I won't pry, Mystery Girl. Matt was sitting right across from me in the living room, texting me, and he didn’t even know that it was me.Jack was sitting between us, playing a video game on the television. The two of them had been taking turns for a while; I would have been hiding in my room were it not for the fact that dinner was in the oven, and I needed to be in close proximity to the kitchen to keep an eye on it.I shot Matt a glance, wondering whether I should ignore his text for now in case anyone caught on. But as my memories of our night in the bathtub worked their way back into my mind, I couldn’t help but be a little naughty.“I do,” I replied, angling my phone in order not to be seen. I tucked my knees up to my chest and leaned back in my armchair, hoping that it would only look as though I was playing a game on my phone.“Well, that’s good,” Matt said. I paused before uttering my next words: “And, Fiona… you can't spend much time talking to me.”A flicker of confusion, combined with hurt, crossed her face. “W-Why?” she murmured.“That's... private,” I replied curtly, immediately regretting my tone.I saw the flash of hurt in her eyes, but she quickly brushed it off. “All right. But we're going dress shopping. You can't go to the ball in your regular clothes.”A few days later, we found ourselves in the town's dress boutique. To keep my identity a secret, I kept my hood up and a surgical mask over my face.“I still don’t get why you’re going to such efforts to hide your identity,” she said as we walked up to the little dress shop on the small shopping

CelesteWhen Matt entered the boutique, my heart immediately took on an erratic beat.I retreated to the safety of the dressing room, my chest heaving as I struggled to catch my breath. Why here? Why now? Why did this only happen to me?I had hoped to go unnoticed, for him to gloss over my presence as he'd always done at school or at Jack's parties. But no, my luck had run its course. This was getting dangerous, and I needed to get out before he or anyone else recognized me.After quickly changing back into my normal clothes, I tugged my hat down harder over my hair, pulled my hood up, and covered my face with my surgical mask.“Let's go,” I blurted to Fiona when I re-emerged from the fitting room, keeping my head low, my face shielded by the hood of my coat. The protective layers felt too thin, but I had no choice. This was the only plan I had in mind.“But, Celeste—” Fiona protested, her voice laden with confusion. That could lead to all kinds of trouble. What if Jack finds out? He would be furious!”“I know, I know,” I admitted, my fingers playing with the hem of my shirt nervously. “But that’s why I’m going to the ball in disguise. To see him. Although it was normally my job to take the trash out, along with all of the other household chores, he said that he didn’t trust me not to sneak the dress back if I did it myself.“You were so wrong,” I whispered to myself as I rolled up my sleeves. He was inside now, drunk already with the hockey game on full blast. EpilogueThe sounds of plates clinking together, and the low hum of chit-chat, merged into the background as I listened to Fiona describe her latest assignment. She was stuck in a geography class that she needed for distribution, and it was driving her nuts. Her professor was a mean, curmudgeonly old man, and a notoriously difficult marker.“He gave me a C–. A C–! That was not a C worthy paper.”Jack nodded. “I read it. It was pretty good.”She rounded on him. “Pretty good?”He put his hands up, a small smile on his lips. “Really pretty good?”She huffed but turned back to me. “Your brother is a pain in the ass.”I smiled. “You’re telling me.” They’d only been together for a few years, but they already bickered like an old married couple. All the guys knew what I planned to do tonight, and they kept throwing me knowing looks as I tried to stay calm.It was the last home game before playoffs started. A part of me kept thinking that I should wait, but an even greater part of me didn’t want to wait one more second. If life had taught me anything, it was that we didn’t know how much time we might have. I didn’t want to waste another second of it. I especially didn’t want to waste time just because I was afraid.“Dude, stop vibrating the bench,” our goalie James called. “I’m trying to focus.”“Sorry,” I answered. If there was one rule in hockey, it was to not mess with the goalie, especially right before a game. If he needed to focus, then I just needed to find a way to chill the fuck out.Enzo gave me a

Jack cringed slightly, throwing her a bemused look.It was the first home game of the year, and Matt was giving everything he had to make sure the team got a win. Around us, the school cheered as he skated by, knocking fists with his teammates. It was his second goal of the night, his first a tricky tip in after Seth’s initial shot rebounded. It was 3-1 with only four minutes left in the third period.“He’s playing great,” Nina said from my other side as the cheering died down, and we took our seats again.“He is.” Over on the bench, Enzo stood in a dark suit, his head bent as he talked to one of his players. He and Nina were staying one more year. “Are you ready for this?” Jack asked, his eyes trailing over my face, looking for any signs of fear or hesitation. I schooled my features into a blank mask. Sure, I was nervous, but he didn’t need to see that. He already hated that he’d gotten me involved. Too bad I was the only one that could do this, and I’d do anything to get the Schreibers out of our town.I took a deep breath and gazed up at the towering mansion. It was on the outskirts of town, far enough away that I’d never seen it, but still close enough for the Schreibers to cause havoc. The house seemed quiet, but I knew our grandfather lurked inside. Him and whoever survived the fight.“I’m ready,” I said, keeping my voice steady. Matt and the rest of the Peacekeepers had already surrounded the house. They were keeping their distance but staying close enough just in case we needed them. It made me feel better knowing he was out there. I knew, without a doubt, that Matt would do anything to keep me safe. Just like I’d do any

Jack“Hey!” Jack called, running to catch up with Fiona. She stopped walking and turned to give him a curious look. “I’ll walk you home,” he said when he reached her side. She gave him a bemused look. Technically, her place was only five minutes from campus, but that didn’t mean she should walk alone at night. Plus, he hadn’t seen her since she moved back in with her roommate, and he wanted a moment alone with her.“Alright,” she said with a shrug. “If you insist.”He smiled. “Better safe than sorry.”“Bye,” Celeste called, waving at them. She gave him a knowing smile, and he glowered at her. She clearly knew something was going on, but it wasn’t her business. They needed to figure this out for themselves. She and Matt were headed in the opposite direction, back toward the house. Matt was still haunting the halls. Everywhere Jack went, there he was. In the bathroom, when he needed to piss. In the kitchen, when he was hungry. Even in the living room at night, making out with his sister

It was the same words every person in this room had recited when they agreed to become a Peacekeeper. It wasn’t something to take lightly, and I didn’t plan to.“I devote myself to this cause from now until my last breath,” I said, stepping back beside my brother. Fiona stood at his other side. She took the oath first, saying the words with the utmost confidence.I locked eyes with Matt, and he gave me a proud smile, his eyes gleaming. Our friends sat around the room, and, as if given some invisible cue, they all began to hoot and clap. They stood up and slapped the three of us on the back. I got pulled into hugs, one after t

He hobbled over to the bed and sank down onto the mattress with a soft groan. “Just as I remember it,” he said, jumping a little. “So soft.”Downstairs, Fiona, and Jack were rifling around in the kitchen. They offered to make us something, but neither of us were very hungry.Matt lay back and stretched his arms over his head, his shirt riding up just enough to reveal the smooth skin along his waistline. His hip bones dipped down into his cargo pants and I bit my lip, desperate to get my hands on him, but still worried about his wounds. Sure, he was up and moving around, but that didn’t mean he should be doing physical activity. I didn’t know a lot about werewolf healing, but I wasn’t willing to risk him.“I missed this room,” he continued, turning to look at me through hooded eyes. The purple bedspread brought back a flood of memories. I hoped this was the last funeral I ever had to go to, at least for a long while.Celeste had a blank expression on her face that worried me more than anything. Beside her, Jack and Fiona stood holding hands. Fiona was crying, and Jack had a stricken look on his face. As one, he and Celeste let go of our hands and stepped forward. They lit the last pyre.“Goodbye dad,” Celeste said, just loud enough for me to hear. My heart squeezed.Jack didn’t speak, he just lowered his gaze and stepped back beside Fiona. Those of us still on our feet spent the rest of the day tending to the wounded. God, there were so many of them. Every wound I saw, every cry of pain I heard, felt like a knife to the gut.
