Chapter 4

Author: Comfortable Grace
“I’d like to see where you can go once you walk out that door!”

Without looking back, I left that house. Then, with a clear mind, I dialed my lawyer’s number.

“Hello, I’d like to consult about filing for divorce.”

The day after I left, Mark texted me, “Sera, don’t think you can use this runaway stunt to threaten me. I’m not coming to find you! If you have the guts, don’t ever come back!”

I never expected him to come looking for me anyway. I was already prepared never to return.

A week soon passed. To my surprise, Mark actually showed up.

“Sera, how much longer are you planning to wander outside?”

For a moment, I wondered if I’d mistaken him for someone else. He was the one who said he wouldn’t care, and now he was suddenly showing concern.

“If something happened to you, how could I ever feel at ease?”

I searched his eyes, but there wasn’t a hint of love in them. Nevertheless, that didn’t matter anymore. Even when I later discovered signs that Angela had been living in our bedroom, I didn’t care.

“She stayed here for a few days while interning since she didn’t have anywhere else to go. You don’t mind, do you?”

She had already lived here, and now he was asking if I minded.

“She’s just a young girl with nowhere to go. Since you’ve said so, what’s there for me to mind?”

Mark seemed stunned by my sudden understanding and calm demeanor. “That’s great—you’re being so reasonable. Angela will be really grateful to you.”

Then, as if thinking of something, he hesitated, visibly awkward. “Oh, right. There’s something I need to discuss with you. It’s about a wedding.”

My heart skipped a beat. I thought, ‘Finally, he remembers.’

He had delayed it again and again, promising that once we had enough money, he would give me a grand wedding.

But now, he was fulfilling that promise… for someone else.

“You know Angela is studying design, don’t you? She designed a wedding gown and wants to try it out. I thought it was no big deal, so I agreed to it. Don’t worry. It’s a fake wedding, just for show...”

I stared at him silently.

Mark put on a conflicted expression, though he couldn’t completely hide the joy in his eyes. “Sera, why aren’t you saying anything…?” He carefully tested me. “If you mind—”

I cut him off and calmly said, “It’s fine. Go ahead.”

Mark looked surprised. “You… you’re not angry?”

Seeing my calm, almost indifferent reaction, he seemed unable to believe it.

In the past, anything involving Angela would make me furious, screaming and arguing for days. This was a wedding I had long dreamed of—something he promised to give me—and now, he was giving it to someone else, yet I couldn’t bring myself to care anymore.

“It’s just a fake wedding. What’s there for me to be angry about? Didn’t you always tell me to be generous?” I threw his own words back at him.

Mark was momentarily speechless. Seeing my reaction, his eyes lit up with relief. “Honey, I misjudged you. I thought you wouldn’t understand, but you’re so sensible. You’re so understanding. How about this? On our fifth wedding anniversary, I’ll make it up to you with a real wedding, okay?”

He tried to come over and hug me, but I blocked him with my hand.

“On our fifth anniversary, I have a gift for you too.”

He smiled with genuine delight. “Great! I’m looking forward to it.”

Just then, I received a message from my lawyer: the finalized divorce agreement.

Everything was ready.
