Lia’s POV

I tensed, hearing the doorbell. And immediately felt a hand over mine to calm me down. I turned to see Alyssa looking at me with concern-filled eyes. I felt Max moving to check the door, and the smell of pizza made me realize that the food had arrived.

I could not help recalling the evening and a fresh set of tears started flowing down my cheeks. Alyssa embraced me and whispered at me to calm down. But the words gave a reverse effect. I shuddered at the thoughts. What if he had not got a call? I knew his demeanor changed after the phone call. What if he had not attended the phone call? What if he had not cooled down? And so many what-ifs haunted me.

I was not able to recall what happened once he opened the door. I saw some flash, and Alastair was blocking me from those lights. I also heard someone shouting and running towards us. At the same time, Alastair relaxed a bit, and I took the opportunity to run to the lift. I vaguely remember catching the first available cab and reached Max's house. I cannot go to my home in this attire and face questions from my family.

Once I reached Max's house, I immediately changed to my spare clothes and threw the shirt away. Max and Alyssa never asked me a question but sat with me till I opened it to them. I was grateful that they did not bug me to tell what happened or bombarded me with questions once I started. I could not have said them entirely if I had been interrupted.

"He was telling that it was to teach me a lesson for stalking. But what did I do wrong? Is it a crime reaching out to talk about the contract?"

Alyssa did not answer.

"He was also threatening about cops. So what did I do wrong?"

Again I was hit by silence. I then lift my head to saw Alyssa crying silently.

"I am sorry, Lia. This is all my fault. I should not have encouraged you to meet Lucian Alastair. Then this would not have happened." Alyssa looked very guilty.

"No, Als, this is not at all your fault. I know your intention is only to help me. Don't ever think in that way." I whispered back to her.

But she never got convinced, and so I hugged her. "You are like a sister I never had. I will never allow you to feel guilty on this."

She gave a watery smile.

"Come on, you two. Enough with these emotions. Get a grip. The pizza is getting cold" Alyssa glared at Max.

"Is the stupid pizza more important than Lia and me?"

Max visibly gulped. "No, dear, I was telling that we should thank God that Lia had come back safe."

Alyssa still did not have convinced and was still glaring at Max. If looks could kill? I chuckled lightly, seeing their exchange.

Alyssa smiled at my change of mood. "Come, Lia, Let's have dinner. And don't think about leaving after. You are staying here tonight."

After having dinner and two cups of coffee, I decided to call my parents to inform them that I was crashing at Max's. I searched for my phone and realized then that I left all my possessions in the hotel while running away. My face drained of any color I gained. I cannot face the same place or persons again.

Alyssa frowned at my sudden change of emotion.

"I le.. le.. left my purse, case and my phone in the hotel. I don't want to go back there," I stuttered badly to string my words.

"Then don't go. I will ask my friend to get your possessions from there." Alyssa comforted me with her smile. And I felt a relief that I did not need to face that place immediately.

**********

I slept the whole night very badly, and every time I managed to get some sleep, I woke up with a start with some unwanted dreams. The night prolonged than necessary, and I waited for the dawn to break. I did not want to disturb Max and Alyssa as I already exhausted their hospitality.

Once I saw the morning rays of light crawling into the room, I jumped out of my bed. I took a long shower to relax both body and mind, and it helped me a little. I felt better by the time I entered the kitchen to have a cup of coffee. Caffeine is what I need most to have a fresh mind.

I saw Alyssa and Max coming out of their room when I was about to finish my second cup. They joined me with their cups of morning refreshment. Neither of us was willing to move and had a lazy feel of a weekend.

Alyssa was frowning at her phone, and suddenly she was all thumbs with it. Max bend to check with a puzzled face, and instantly I saw anger creeping out in his eyes. Both of them look up to saw me and gave me a smile that did not reach their eyes. Something was wrong.

"What is the matter, guys?" I asked in a worrisome voice. Was anything wrong?

"Nothing Lia. Do you want to do anything today? Or want to lazy out in the home?" Alyssa's voice showed that it was not nothing.

"I think we can lazy out today. But before that, Als, why don't you check with your friend if we can get Lia's items from Mandarin. I don't want it to get lost. And who knows if anyone tried to reach her." Max stressed to Alyssa, which had some underline meaning, and I saw Alyssa nod back. Something was wrong.

"Guy's cut it. I know something is not right. What is the matter?"

Since neither answered, I snatched Alyssa's phone before either of them realized my action. It was a FB post with the title "Lucian Alastair's Secret Girl" with a picture of him and me.

The floor started moving, and walls began closing me. And I felt into comfortable darkness.

.

.

.

I opened my eyes and to see Max's face with a worried expression. I groaned and closed my eyes again.

"Don't you dare pass out again, lady? You freaked the life out of me."

I chuckled at Max shouting. Wait... He said about me fainting. Did I? Mainly, why did I? Then everything played in my mind like a fast-forward motion picture. I got up in a flick, all alert.

That's why I saw the flash yesterday. I took Alyssa's phone and again checked the news. It was taken when Lucian Alastair tried to shield me from those cameras. But he was half-naked, and I was wearing his shirt. It looked as if he was hugging me rather than hiding me. Also, with his and my tousled hair, the picture showed a different story. To my horror, I believed it for a minute. What would others think about it?

Max immediately came to my side. "Lia, the picture didn't show your face. I checked almost all the social media. None is showing a picture with your face. So till now, it is only a mysterious girl." I thanked silently for hitting the main issue with no-nonsense talk. It made me relax a bit.

"Where is Als?" I asked Max as I knew Alyssa was not a girl who leaves me alone at this time.

"Her friend has come to give your items that were from the Suite. We don't want anyone to identify you." What had I done to get such good friends?

I saw then Alyssa coming into the room with a worried expression. I felt a dead weight in my stomach seeing her face. I did not feel good about this.

"Lia.." Alyssa hesitated. Her body language told that she was not sure how to break the news.

"Say it, Als. I don't think I can get any more worst news, right?"

"My friend did not find your items in the Suite. Instead, she found this note." She gave me an envelope.

'Adelia Wentworth' I saw my name written in a neat scribble. Why were my hands shaking this bad? Inside was a single sheet of paper.

I smirked back at him, and I let out a chuckle when James suddenly looked as if he had swallowed a lemon. "But why should I be invited for tea with your Mom?" "Since when they have treated you an outsider?" I raised an eyebrow at him. James smiled softly, expressing his love towards my family. But now, my mom had not invited me to a lovely family union. Lia’s POV I gaze at the figure in front of me. Is that me? Wearing cream suit with simple pearl choker and bracelet. It is not a dress I will choose for a love knot, but others will not doubt it on the intention of marriage. The diamond ring glitters on my finger, which is admired by our parents, friends, and family. Speaking of friends and family, where are Alyssa and Mitch? As if they get their cue, they enter the room. This room is in Lucian’s parents’ villa where our marriage is about to happen next hour. The room belongs to Lucian, but I am occupying it for the past two days. Thankfully he went on a business trip and has returned only this morning. “Are you ready, Lia?” Alyssa looks at me from top to toe. “Are you sure, Lia?” Mitch asks in a worrisome face. If not for Maria and Thomas, the couple who takes care of the villa, I am sure that I would have been lost in a vast villa and Island. I love beaches. I surely do. But after four full days of spending time on the beach, I had enough beach time for the near future. Once we had reached the villa, Luc introduced me to Thomas and Maria. Apart from two other housekeepers who come three times a day, Maria takes care of the cooking and cleaning. Thomas takes care of the garden and acts as a chauffeur. After the introduction, Lucian retired himself to his study and was busy with his work till now. Unfortunately, I have not brought my laptop with me to spend on my work. Lia's POV Four Days! It's been four days since we are back at Lucian's home. And three days since I moved here. I scarcely set my foot out between packing, moving, and unpacking things. Tomorrow I will be joining Luc's office as his Associate. I will join in the name of Adelia Wentworth; in fact, I haven't changed my name to Adelia Alastair. Somehow the name Adelia Alastair doesn't ring a bell as good as Adelia Wentworth. As usual, I zone out of my thoughts and late for my night out with my friends. I am meeting Als and Mitch for dinner tonight. I rarely see Lucian in the four days. Once he dropped me at home, he just left to office. At least thoughtful to leave James to pack my things from my house. God, I am on the verge of crying, thinking about how I packed from my home. Time is flying like anything. After the disastrous incident, Diaz, her mom, and Mitchel were arrested by cops. Poor Diaz killed herself in prison. Bella could not bear the shock of her daughter’s death and became mentally depressed. She is currently in the psychiatric division of state prison. Mitchel is still behind bars and has six more years to serve. Even though Hal was also behind the conspiracy, having Mary and kids in mind, Luc did not press charges against him. But Luc cut ties with him, and Hal is no more in the media industry. Luc is still in the media industry but more on production. He is taking up only selected roles once in a while. James is his manager, associate, and bodyguard. As for the Alastair Corporation, Luc is the Chairman. I am the Vice-Chairman having the complete aut

Lia’s POV I wake from my deep slumber and turn to see Luc lying head down. He is asleep, sitting next to me, holding my hand. I try to release my hands, keyword try. Once I move my hand, he grips even tighter and jerks up. He looks at me first as if to believe that I am awake. Then he smiles slowly. “Hi,” I say, not knowing what to say. He chuckles at me. “Hi yourself.” “How are you feeling? Any pain?” He asks me, looking at my mid-section. I shake my head at his question. “No. Just thirsty.” He gets up to bring a glass of water with a straw. I sip the water to cherish the chill feeling s

Luc’s POV I sit stoically in the hospital chair. The surgeons are operating for Lia right now. I could see James talking to the cops. Dad has gone to complete the formalities in the reception. Mom is sitting next to me, holding my hand. I am observing everything but detached from everything at the same. My eyes often drift to the doors of the operation theatre. I could not forget the way Lia fell with the gushing of blood. My heart will be scarred with that forever. I have failed to save Lia and failed my promises to her. Mom never says a word but sits next to me. That is all I want now. She understands that I cannot talk or listen to anything but need someone for me. How have I got blessed with such understanding parents? Why have I thought that they will blame me for Jake’s death? I

Luc’s POV Dad listens to everything and shocks me, saying that he already has suspected something like that. “How?” I ask him. “Lucian, I am your dad. But, just because I am not with you in your daily life doesn’t mean that I don’t know my children. Did you think that I never noticed the change in your behavior? Or the way you started treating Diaz and Bella differently? And, I am talking on behalf of your mom too.” I am speechless. How can I think so less of my family? A streak of guilt passes in along with my other emotions. Let me deal with that later. Right now, Lia is my priority. Dad says that he will be getting all the help he can, starting from the cops in that locality. I close the call and realize that we were almost near.

Lia’s POV I feel heavy over my head and try to shift in my sleep. I am stiff like I am tied up. I pry open my eyes, wondering what is happening. My eyes slowly get used to the light and find myself in an unfamiliar room. I try to rub my eyes but cannot lift my hands. I look down to see my hands tied up in the armrest. My neck is stiff and pain at the side. Possibly my head is at the wrong angle. But Where am I? Slowly memories flood back. Someone hit Patrick on the head, and I got sprayed. Panic surges through me, and I try my best to keep calm to assess the situation. Who did this? Why do they want me? I hear footsteps nearing and look up to see Diaz walking inside. “You?” I ask in surprise.

Lia’s POV “Thank you, Scarlet. Keep us updated on the progress.” I close the call with Scarlet. The operations have started in complete form in Japan. But there are some glitches beyond our anticipation. Some of the senior members on the board are slightly unresponsive as they are afraid of their jobs. But nothing too complicated to handle. Scarlet is doing a great job there. Making a mental note to inform Luc, I bid bye to James before leaving for lunch. I am meeting Mitch and Als today and haven’t spoken to them since my birthday. Patrick is driving me to the restaurant. Luc is still obsessive about my security. *** I wait in our regular booth for Als and Mitch. I am browsing the menu, deciding on the order by the time.

Lia’s POV We board the jet to Japan. Tomorrow is the final signing of the merger—one closer step to Luc’s dreams. My heart elates at this thought. James and Patrick are accompanying us along with Scarlet, Regina, Mitch, and, unfortunately, Cindy. I need to endure her stare for another 12 hours. I let an involuntary sigh at this thought. Luc raises an eyebrow at my reaction. I blush, shaking my head. We have settled inside the seats. There is a big living lounge and for everyone to settle down. The chairs are comfy enough for a small nap. The crew is available in the kitchen cabinet in case of any need for refreshments and food. James and Patrick are seated next to us. Luc is involved in his laptop. I start browsing the documents to do a final check.

Lia's POVIt's Christmas Eve. Luc, I, and James are here in our little hideout. Yes, the same beach house. He has excused us from the family dinner, citing the shoot. We are traveling to Japan in a couple of days and planning to visit both our parents after New Year's Eve. I know it is because he doesn't want to face Diaz soon. He is still contemplating the idea of how to avoid Diaz without the family's knowledge. He is afraid that his actions towards her will make the details of Jake's death known to everyone.I am sure that his parents and Thea will understand Luc, but he is still afraid of their reaction. I think he doesn't want to take the risk of getting rejected and so distancing himself from them. I am sad to hear this because I know Kate, Ric, and Thea are even more worried about Luc. I hope Lucian will overcome his fear soon.

  • His Locked Soul   Part 30

Lia's POV It's Thanksgiving Eve. Lucian and I have come to the family feast along with Ric, Kate, and Thea. James has gone to visit his sister. It is pretty odd to have a family gathering without James, who has become good support like Jax. It is fun to prepare for the feast as a whole family—especially Thea, who is curious to do everything. Kate, as usual, organized an excellent lunch. Fortunately, it is only a family dinner, and hence we don't have to face Diaz. Luc has told me that he will take care of her, but I am becoming more restless after her latest stunt. We are happily chatting along with the lunch. "Thea, you are graduating next month. What is your plan? Are you ready to join the office?" Ric asks Thea.
