Lia's POV
I entered a vast lobby. Despite my nervousness, I could not help but admire the infrastructure. Unfortunately, I did not remember how long I stood admiring the area when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"May I help you, ma'am? You had not responded when I called you,"
The security person asked politely.
Get a grip, Lia. Don't make the situation further worse.
"Pardon me. I have an appointment scheduled with Mr. Lucian Alastair."
"Your name, please."
"Adelia Wentworth"
After what seemed like an eternity of shuffling of papers, "Yes, madam. Can I get your ID card?"
What, how many levels of checking I need to go through. After a series of questions, a photograph, and some checking, I finally got a go.
"Please take first left and press the top floor in the middle elevator. Thank you."
I smiled my thanks and moved towards the left.
**********************
Security POVI dialed Mr. Witherlow's number.
"James." I heard the same snapping voice.
"Good morning, sir. It is the security person Hunter here. Miss
Wentworth has arrived, and I have done as you have instructed. She is reaching the elevators now."
"Thanks, Hunter. Make sure no one reaches the executive floor for the next 2 hours."
"Yes, sir."
Why the hell did Mr. Witherlow ask me to do these unnecessary checks. Something is fishy.
******************************
James POV"Miss Wentworth is on the way," I informed Luc once I switched on my phone.
"And the security?"
"Did the same as instructed."
"Good." James nodded curtly.
"Can I know why?"
"The elongated protocols and questions at the security will either confuse her or irritate her. It will make her emotionally unstable. It makes us easy to convince her."
"I hope you are correct, Luc."
Then we waited for the knock at the door.
**************************
Lia's POVHow come there are so many floors in this building. Do they have that many employees? How big is his company?
And what with those security processes. It was worse than entering the President's office. I felt the short research I did on Lucian Alastair is not enough. I could see the door written 'Lucian Alastair, CEO & President'. Suddenly the path looked so long for me. Finally, finally, I reached the door after what looked like an eternity. I was scared to touch the doorknob as if the metal was blazing hot.
Come on, Lia. You can do it. Just explain your situation, get your possessions and leave. Just as simple as that. I raised my hand to knock on the door before losing my newfound courage.
I got startled by the voice that asked me to enter. I counted from 10 to 1 to control my panic attack. However, all my newfound bravery got evaporated once I saw the dark eyes. It captured and arrested me. I came out of my trance when I heard someone cleared their throat. My cheeks blushed red when they both caught me staring. But who is the other one? But why should I bother? Let me concentrate on the crux of the problem.
I then observed the details of the room. It was spacious, painted majorly painted in various shades of Grey. The end of the room holds the desk with comfy chairs. The back wall is decorated in grey marble. One side of the entire room has a glass wall with partitioned closed shades. I hope the view should be extraordinary. One end of the room had a small meeting table with four chairs. There were two doors: the washroom and God knows what the other one is. The other end of the room had six comfy sofas with a coffee table in the middle. I saw Lucian Alastair and the other one seated in those sofas. Once again, I saw them catching me looking around.
"Good Morning Mr. Alastair. I am Adelia Wentworth."
"Yes, Miss. Wentworth. Please have a seat. "He said with a smirk. I had a creepy feeling that he is thinking about our previous meeting.
*************
Luc's POVWe heard a knock a couple of minutes after the call from the security guard. Once I asked to enter the room, I saw her taking reluctant steps inside. Purposely I saw on the end of the room, but she immediately turned towards me as if she felt my presence before seeing. I saw the dark brown eyes widened in fear, and did I saw fascination. I did not know how long we were staring at each other until I heard James clearing his throat. James was smiling at us, and his smile broadened, seeing both of us blushing.
I immediately wiped all the emotions from my face and asked him to leave us alone. Then I turned to saw her looking around the office. Is she estimating my worth? Nope, I did not see her eyes calculating but mere admiring the interior. Again I saw her red creeping on her cheeks when we caught her staring around. I should say, I was impressed by the way she changed to a professional demeanor in an instant.
She came near with a slight nod. "Good Morning Mr. Alastair. I am Adelia Wentworth."
Did she think that I would not have identified her? But not a bad start. I could not help thinking about the last time.
"Yes, Miss. Wentworth. Please have a seat. "I showed her a sofa with a smirk. So far, so good.
I saw her fidgeting after seated. I understood she is battling herself on how to start. It was cute. As much as I liked to see that, I want to cut to chase.
"Miss. Wentworth, could you explain what happened on Thursday?" I knew that I had hit the target as I saw her eyes narrowed at me.
******************
Lia's POV:Oh, the nerve of the man. Was he playing with me? I glared at him and then realized that Thursday was not a planned meeting, and I did not know how much confusion got raised. So, for the benefit of the doubt, I decided to explain myself.
"Mr. Alastair, my father is Gerald Wentworth, running Worth Manufacturers. We are supplying the Gearbox for you for more than ten years. We understood that you are looking for new suppliers this year. I tried to contact you for the past two weeks to understand if there were any issues with our products to check on other suppliers. Hence I decided to meet you on Thursday to explain about our products."
I stopped, not knowing how to proceed. Upon my silence, he raised an eyebrow but kept silent for a minute. God, this guy is trying to play with me.
"How do you know that I was in that suite on that day? Don't say you read somewhere. I generally don't disclose my whereabouts."
Sometimes truth is the best thing to say."I got a piece of information about you being in Mandarin on Thursday at 8 pm. I decided to use this opportunity to meet you. None of my family is involved in this."
"How you got the information?"
"I am sorry, Mr. Alastair. It was an innocent gossip from my friend, and I intend to use the information. However, I don't want some good soul to suffer because of my intentions."
I should say, the glint in his eyes told that he was impressed.
"But your confession will not erase the havoc caused personally and in public, especially when my next movie is about to start. So why should I not cancel the deal with Worth Industries once for all?"
I could sense the anger boiling in his words. Canceling the deal is not good for dad now. How can I stop it? Oh God, the guilt will eat me alive."But.. But..."
"Not to mention about my parents' reaction. So I think this will not be a bad decision after all."
I saw him smiling at me like a predator smiling at its prey. I felt as if all the doors had closed.
But that did not stop me from my bitter words, "You like me begging. Don't you?"
**************
Luc's POV"You like me begging. Don't you?" She asked bitterly to me.
I would like her to beg me but in a different place and different way. This was not the time to talk about that.
"No, not begging. But I have a proposition for you. The unexpected turn of the event after Thursday made me make some decisions. My parents were upset about the incident. I need them to have peace of mind in their old days."
"I can explain to your parents. I will tell you that it was only a business meeting, and it got misunderstood."
"In a Suite? With me, half-naked, and you dressed in my shirt?" I asked in an amused tone.
She was silent, understanding the enormity of the situation.
"What do you want me to do?"
Finally, the ball is rolling towards the court.
"Marry Me."
Her eyes widened and then glazed in confusion.
"I am sorry, I think I did not hear correctly. Did you asked me to marry you?"
"Indeed, your hearing is perfect, Miss. Wentworth. Yes, I have asked to marry you."
"Why?"
"The news about us have created unexpected disturbances in my family and my film career. Regarding my publicity, my Manager will deal with it. But counting on the recent incidents in my home, I cannot risk my parents' health. So I have informed you that the girl in the photograph is my girlfriend. "I saw her got stilled with shock. I did not know why I was sharing this with her.
"But why me? The photographs did not show my face, and you could have used this for your advantage."
Clever, but not smart enough.
"This is a mutual Win-Win agreement. I know that Worth Manufacturers need this contract very badly. Your father will get this contract by this marriage, and my parents will be happy that their son had got a family. But this marriage will not be announced public till my current movie is released. I don't want to deviate the publicity of the movie on the wrong track. If this marriage news leaks out, the whole deal will be off."
I knew this was a crap reason. I did not want this marriage to be public because this marriage would be mainly to satisfy my mom and dad. But after a year, if I found her to be like other females, I did not want any divorce complications.
"What about my close friends and family?"
"I can understand that you cannot hide your marriage from your close circle. But it is in your hands that the news is not leaked out from them."
I saw her thinking deeply. However, I still had a nagging feeling that she was not convinced still. So I decided to use my last shot.
"Miss. Wentworth, if you think that you can escape easily. Please understand that there are not only photographs you saw in the media. But also some photographs which show your face. I can very well leak them to the media to disclose the identity of my Mystery Girl. And I can cancel the contract with Worth Industries. My reputation has already shaken, but I do not have anything more to lose. So think and decide wisely."
I felt a pang of pity to target her in all directions, but I did not have a choice. Finally, after what seemed to eternity, she looked at me.
"Can I think about this?"
"Yes, you can. Today is Saturday. You have 24 hours to answer me. I expect you to answer by tomorrow 10 am again here in my office. I have already drafted the agreement between us. Read it. You can refer to any lawyer if you want. I will not be waiting for your answer, not more than 11:00 am tomorrow."
I stood up, indicating that the meeting is over. She, too, stood and picked up the document. She reached for the door and turned back, and smiled at me. Her eyes glint with mischief.
"I think you would have already guessed my answer, but I need to verify this agreement between us. And by the way, I have also informed my mom that you are my boyfriend." With that, she left.
She said WHAT?????
Lia's POV I entered the lift and let out the breath I was holding subconsciously. I knew it was a big mistake to let out such a statement. But who did he think himself off? That arrogant, self-centered, egoistic, handsome, eye-catching... What? Get a grip, Lia. Please don't say that you fell for him. You were not one of his lapdogs.
Lia’s POV I gaze at the figure in front of me. Is that me? Wearing cream suit with simple pearl choker and bracelet. It is not a dress I will choose for a love knot, but others will not doubt it on the intention of marriage. The diamond ring glitters on my finger, which is admired by our parents, friends, and family. Speaking of friends and family, where are Alyssa and Mitch? As if they get their cue, they enter the room. This room is in Lucian’s parents’ villa where our marriage is about to happen next hour. The room belongs to Lucian, but I am occupying it for the past two days. Thankfully he went on a business trip and has returned only this morning. “Are you ready, Lia?” Alyssa looks at me from top to toe. “Are you sure, Lia?” Mitch asks in a worrisome face. She still does not thi
Lia's POV Frustrated.. Angered.. Isolated.. Bored.. These are my current feelings. If not for Maria and Thomas, the couple who takes care of the villa, I am sure that I would have been lost in a vast villa and Island. I love beaches. I surely do. But after four full days of spending time on the beach, I had enough beach time for the near future. Once we had reached the villa, Luc introduced me to Thomas and Maria. Apart from two other housekeepers who come three times a day, Maria takes care of the cooking and cleaning. Thomas takes care of the garden and acts as a chauffeur. After the introduction, Lucian retired himself to his study and was busy with his work till now. Unfortunately, I have not brought my laptop with me to spend on my work. Apart from me working in my dad's concern,
Lia's POV Four Days! It's been four days since we are back at Lucian's home. And three days since I moved here. I scarcely set my foot out between packing, moving, and unpacking things. Tomorrow I will be joining Luc's office as his Associate. I will join in the name of Adelia Wentworth; in fact, I haven't changed my name to Adelia Alastair. Somehow the name Adelia Alastair doesn't ring a bell as good as Adelia Wentworth. As usual, I zone out of my thoughts and late for my night out with my friends. I am meeting Als and Mitch for dinner tonight. I rarely see Lucian in the four days. Once he dropped me at home, he just left to office. At least thoughtful to leave James to pack my things from my house. God, I am on the verge of crying, thinking about how I packed from my home. Even though my dad and mom braced a smile, the unshed tears
Luc's POV "Waiting for the inevitable???" I am sure to detect the smirk in James's voice. I decide not to answer. "When is David reporting to office back?" I divert the topic. "Tomorrow. I have already set up a meeting." "Make sure to include Lia. Let's check her level of expertise in administration." "What will be your explanation for including Lia? In fact, how are you going to introduce her here?" James's voice has genuine curiosity. "We are introducing here as my associate. She will be either working with you or with me..." "But not al
Luc's POV My hands trace the paperweight while watching the presentation. The meeting is set to discuss our next steps on the Eurasian expansion, and David is providing the pointers based on his recent visit to Japan. A junior-level executive could have presented better. I doubt if he prepared the content or he just delegated the work to his subordinates. He is becoming more and more nervous seeing my poker face. To think he is appointed to take care of Europe and Asia, Were you, serious Dad? Finally, the lights are on, and all the board turn for my reaction. It's time to check if the board finds the flaws I have caught in the presentation. "What is your opinion about this expansion?" my question is posted in general. "This is an excellent opportunity for our growth. Considering the m
Lia's POV The buzz of alarm wakes me from my deep slumber. I blink a couple of times to adjust the sunlight from the terrace into my room. The day is bright, and I don't want to waste in bed. It is only 6:30 am and a lot of time to get ready for the office. I decide to visit mom and dad before going to the office. After completing my morning routine, I dress up in a grey slub Knee length skirt matching a black keyhole Neck top. A simple gold bracelet with matching earrings complements the attire. I atone the hair in a single plait. A touch of mascara and lip gloss completes my look. I ensure that I have my items in my bag along with my laptop and enter the kitchen. My breath hitches at the sight of Lucian sitting on the island. His jacket is discarded on the back of the chair, and sle
Lia’s POV I rush into the office and find James waiting for me. His confused expression tells me that he is clueless. “Is Lucian in yet?” “He is still on the meeting. He will be here in another 30 min. What is the matter, Lia?” “It is about Aviation International” James’ puzzlement becomes deeper. “What’s with Aviation International?” “Before that, can you tell me what Lucian’s decision on Negotiation is?” “Why do you want to know it? Out of the blue, you called stating to discuss something important. Then, without giving any information, you want to know about Lucian’s decision on Aviati
Lia’s POV I laugh seeing Luc’s discomfort on the way the females are falling on him. It is again the annual ball for the foster children. I could not believe it is a year since the last ball. Time is flying like anything. After the disastrous incident, Diaz, her mom, and Mitchel were arrested by cops. Poor Diaz killed herself in prison. Bella could not bear the shock of her daughter’s death and became mentally depressed. She is currently in the psychiatric division of state prison. Mitchel is still behind bars and has six more years to serve. Even though Hal was also behind the conspiracy, having Mary and kids in mind, Luc did not press charges against him. But Luc cut ties with him, and Hal is no more in the media industry. Luc is still in the media industry but more on production. He is taking up only selected roles once in a while. James is his manager, associate, and bodyguard. As for the Alastair Corporation, Luc is the Chairman. I am the Vice-Chairman having the complete aut
Lia’s POV I wake from my deep slumber and turn to see Luc lying head down. He is asleep, sitting next to me, holding my hand. I try to release my hands, keyword try. Once I move my hand, he grips even tighter and jerks up. He looks at me first as if to believe that I am awake. Then he smiles slowly. “Hi,” I say, not knowing what to say. He chuckles at me. “Hi yourself.” “How are you feeling? Any pain?” He asks me, looking at my mid-section. I shake my head at his question. “No. Just thirsty.” He gets up to bring a glass of water with a straw. I sip the water to cherish the chill feeling s
Luc’s POV I sit stoically in the hospital chair. The surgeons are operating for Lia right now. I could see James talking to the cops. Dad has gone to complete the formalities in the reception. Mom is sitting next to me, holding my hand. I am observing everything but detached from everything at the same. My eyes often drift to the doors of the operation theatre. I could not forget the way Lia fell with the gushing of blood. My heart will be scarred with that forever. I have failed to save Lia and failed my promises to her. Mom never says a word but sits next to me. That is all I want now. She understands that I cannot talk or listen to anything but need someone for me. How have I got blessed with such understanding parents? Why have I thought that they will blame me for Jake’s death? I
Luc’s POV Dad listens to everything and shocks me, saying that he already has suspected something like that. “How?” I ask him. “Lucian, I am your dad. But, just because I am not with you in your daily life doesn’t mean that I don’t know my children. Did you think that I never noticed the change in your behavior? Or the way you started treating Diaz and Bella differently? And, I am talking on behalf of your mom too.” I am speechless. How can I think so less of my family? A streak of guilt passes in along with my other emotions. Let me deal with that later. Right now, Lia is my priority. Dad says that he will be getting all the help he can, starting from the cops in that locality. I close the call and realize that we were almost near.
Lia’s POV I feel heavy over my head and try to shift in my sleep. I am stiff like I am tied up. I pry open my eyes, wondering what is happening. My eyes slowly get used to the light and find myself in an unfamiliar room. I try to rub my eyes but cannot lift my hands. I look down to see my hands tied up in the armrest. My neck is stiff and pain at the side. Possibly my head is at the wrong angle. But Where am I? Slowly memories flood back. Someone hit Patrick on the head, and I got sprayed. Panic surges through me, and I try my best to keep calm to assess the situation. Who did this? Why do they want me? I hear footsteps nearing and look up to see Diaz walking inside. “You?” I ask in surprise.
Lia’s POV “Thank you, Scarlet. Keep us updated on the progress.” I close the call with Scarlet. The operations have started in complete form in Japan. But there are some glitches beyond our anticipation. Some of the senior members on the board are slightly unresponsive as they are afraid of their jobs. But nothing too complicated to handle. Scarlet is doing a great job there. Making a mental note to inform Luc, I bid bye to James before leaving for lunch. I am meeting Mitch and Als today and haven’t spoken to them since my birthday. Patrick is driving me to the restaurant. Luc is still obsessive about my security. *** I wait in our regular booth for Als and Mitch. I am browsing the menu, deciding on the order by the time.
Lia’s POV We board the jet to Japan. Tomorrow is the final signing of the merger—one closer step to Luc’s dreams. My heart elates at this thought. James and Patrick are accompanying us along with Scarlet, Regina, Mitch, and, unfortunately, Cindy. I need to endure her stare for another 12 hours. I let an involuntary sigh at this thought. Luc raises an eyebrow at my reaction. I blush, shaking my head. We have settled inside the seats. There is a big living lounge and for everyone to settle down. The chairs are comfy enough for a small nap. The crew is available in the kitchen cabinet in case of any need for refreshments and food. James and Patrick are seated next to us. Luc is involved in his laptop. I start browsing the documents to do a final check.
Lia's POVIt's Christmas Eve. Luc, I, and James are here in our little hideout. Yes, the same beach house. He has excused us from the family dinner, citing the shoot. We are traveling to Japan in a couple of days and planning to visit both our parents after New Year's Eve. I know it is because he doesn't want to face Diaz soon. He is still contemplating the idea of how to avoid Diaz without the family's knowledge. He is afraid that his actions towards her will make the details of Jake's death known to everyone.I am sure that his parents and Thea will understand Luc, but he is still afraid of their reaction. I think he doesn't want to take the risk of getting rejected and so distancing himself from them. I am sad to hear this because I know Kate, Ric, and Thea are even more worried about Luc. I hope Lucian will overcome his fear soon.
Lia's POV It's Thanksgiving Eve. Lucian and I have come to the family feast along with Ric, Kate, and Thea. James has gone to visit his sister. It is pretty odd to have a family gathering without James, who has become good support like Jax. It is fun to prepare for the feast as a whole family—especially Thea, who is curious to do everything. Kate, as usual, organized an excellent lunch. Fortunately, it is only a family dinner, and hence we don't have to face Diaz. Luc has told me that he will take care of her, but I am becoming more restless after her latest stunt. We are happily chatting along with the lunch. "Thea, you are graduating next month. What is your plan? Are you ready to join the office?" Ric asks Thea.
