Hayden-

It has been four years since I received the most devastating news of my life. Four years of living with the most profound regret of my life. In less than a month, I would graduate from college, and I was already dreading the day.

I was tempted not to graduate at all. Knowing my family died at the same time I was on stage receiving my high school diploma, I didn’t feel like I deserved to graduate. If it weren’t for my best friend, Lillian Conner, whom I call Lily, I would have considered ending my life on the day that I was supposed to graduate.

It would be a bittersweet way to die. I had gone as far as writing a suicide note, but Lily had found it and convinced me not to. I met Lily on my first day of freshman year, and we have been friends and roommates ever since. At first, I hadn’t wanted to be her friend, but she pestered me endlessly until I gave in.

Her life was almost as tragic as mine. When she was a senior in high school, her family had been killed in a car accident. I haven’t told her my story, and she never pushed me to tell her. To this day, I haven’t accepted the death of my family.

A few days after I found out about my mother, my stepfather’s death was confirmed. Dominic’s body couldn’t be identified, but the watch on the third body’s wrist had been the same one Dominic wore. Even if they couldn’t recognize his body, I knew in my heart he was gone.

If he wasn’t dead, I believe he would have let me know. Since I hadn’t heard anything from him in four years, I could only assume that the third body was Dominic’s. Some days, I didn’t think he was dead, as I occasionally felt his presence. I eventually assumed that it was because I was in constant denial about their death, which was causing me to think he wasn’t dead.

Lily was my saving grace because every day, she would find something that would allow me to feel slightly human. Tonight was one of those nights. She had arranged for me to go on a blind date. I refused at first until she mentioned the date would take place at a bar.

I had no interest in dating anyone, but the thought of drinking was appealing. Since I didn’t have any more classes to attend, I had nothing better to do with my time. For the past week, I have been hiding in the dorm room, so a night out might help.

Unlike most students preparing to graduate, I didn’t apply for an internship. I was receiving a bachelor's degree in graphic design, literature, and creative writing. I have been writing since I was a kid but have never published anything.

My dream was to work in publishing as an editor and cover designer, and I also wanted to write my own stories. Due to the workload of majoring in three different areas, I had little time to join an internship program. Now, I wish I had something to occupy my time.

“Why aren’t you ready?” Lily stormed into the dorm room, carrying a bag in each hand.

“I got distracted,” I admitted as I sat up on the bean bag chair I had been lounging in.

“With what?” She quirked her brows, as she usually did when I didn’t give her a direct answer.

She didn’t pressure me to tell her what was happening in my head, but I sensed she wanted me to open up willingly. Since I still couldn’t tell her what was going on, I got up from the bean bag chair and moved to the table in the center of the room. Lily sat the bags on the table and then started digging through them.

“What did you get?” I asked, ignoring her question.

“Since I figured you would be in one of your moods, I decided to pick up a cute outfit for tonight.” Lily’s demeanor changed dramatically, and she smiled broadly as she pulled out a beautiful white dress.

“I have plenty of dresses.” I groaned but took the dress from her anyway.

“I wouldn’t call them dresses.” Lily rolled her eyes as she dug into the other bag and pulled out a box. You might as well wear a sack if you consider them dresses.”

Holding up the dress she brought, I started to see her point. Compared to my dresses, this dress was on a completely different level. Everything I owned was purchased from a thrift store. Technically, I had money, but I refused to spend it.

The money I had was from what my mother had left me. While I thought the dresses, I owned were cute, they were low quality. This dress looked more like a dress that a runway model would wear. The only thing I didn’t care for was that it was a little revealing.

While in college, I received the nickname Prudence due to my refusal to show little to no skin and my lack of risk-taking. I never liked the name, but I didn't let it get to me either. Tonight, I felt like I needed to step out of my comfort zone.

“I also bought you a pair of shoes to go with the dress,” Lily said, opening the box.

Inside the box was a pair of elegant, glossy white heels. It has been a long time since I wore heels, but at least they were only about two inches. Draping the dress over my arm, I grabbed the shoes and went into the shared bathroom.

When I put on the dress, I tugged at the dress. It was a little tight for my liking, but not overly so. It did accentuate my curves, but that wasn’t what bothered me. The dress covered my cleavage, but it only covered one shoulder.

It was a long sleeve dress, except the sleeve was slit from the shoulder to the wrist. At least the dress length was appropriate, as it cascaded down my body in a classic A-line. It hugged my hips, with the skirt whimsically flowing down to the middle of my calves.

I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate for a bar scene, but Lily mentioned that the bar was for higher-class patrons. I knew that if I continued to dissect the dress, I would talk myself out of it, so I focused on applying a light layer of makeup. After that, I styled my shoulder-length blonde hair into loose curls.

Once I was done, I put on the heels and tested them by walking from one end of the bathroom to the other. When I didn’t stumble, I left the bathroom. Lily’s jaw dropped when I stepped out.

“If I had known you had a body like that, I would have convinced you to change your style a long time ago.” Lilly said in awe.

“I should change.” I suddenly felt embarrassed.

“Don’t you dare!” She screeched as she rushed toward me and dragged me away from the bathroom. “Besides, it is too late now.”

She grabbed a small white purse from the table and shoved it into my hands. “You can borrow my purse tonight. I already put your phone and wallet inside.”

I was unable to protest as she practically shoved me out of the room and down the hall. When we were outside, I regretted agreeing to go on a blind date. Stepping to the side, I tried to circle around her, but she reacted quickly.

She spun me around, stopping me from going back into the dorm building. A man dressed in black slacks and a white formal shirt came up the stairs, holding a single white rose. He was handsome, but I didn’t feel any connection to him.

From what Lily told me, his name was Tristan Lywood. I knew he was my date since Lily had shown me a picture of him. He had dark brown hair and blue eyes, which made me think of Dominic. My stomach twisted at the thought of him. He wasn’t built the same way as Dominic, but he wasn’t bad either.

“You look stunning.” Tristan smiled as he handed me the rose.

“Thank you.” I mumbled while I accepted the rose.

“You two have fun!” Lily gently shoved me toward him, causing me to stumble.

Tristan reacted quickly and wrapped his arms around my waist to prevent me from falling. I didn’t feel anything in his arms, which further proved I wasn’t attracted to him. Pulling away from him, I avoided eye contact and looked over to see Lily had retreated.

“Are you ready?” I asked as the desire to drink increased.

“More than ready!” Tristan’s eagerness made me feel a little guilty.

Letting Tristan lead me to his car, I kept my eyes drawn to the ground. After he opened the passenger door, I climbed in and mumbled a thank you. When he got in the car, I glanced over and saw his eyes lit up when he smiled.

Taking a deep breath, I decided I would try to give him a chance. I didn’t know if I would like him more than a friend, but maybe I would obtain a new friend when the night was over. Settling against the seat, I reached over my shoulder to pull the seat belt around me.

Hayden-Arriving at the bar, Tristan led me to a table in the back of the room. We sat in uncomfortable silence for a few minutes until a waitress arrived to take our order. I was relieved when he ordered a few shots and a couple of mixed drinks for each of us.“I can see that you are tense.” Tristan said after the waitress returned with the shots and then left. “I thought you might feel a little better with a little liquid courage.”I took the two shots that he placed in front of me and downed them one after another. It didn’t take long for the shots to take effect. It wasn’t enough to make me feel drunk, but it did loosen me up a bit.For the next hour, we chatted about random things. I learned he was the vice president of Fox Ink, one of the largest publishing companies in the world. I told him about my career goals, and for once, I was looking forward to it.Even if the booze was easing my troubled soul, I started to believe that I would eventually be able to let go of the past en

Hayden-“Daddy!” The female cried.Looking up, I saw the unknown female crawl over to the dead man, leaning over his body and shaking him. The more she shook him, the more he bled. As the pool of blood increased, so did the bile in my stomach.I felt the urge to vomit again, but I couldn’t move. With wide eyes, I watched as the female cried over her father’s body. I should have listened to Dominic when he told me to leave. If I had, I wouldn’t have been responsible for killing someone.Despite the female’s protest, she was hauled to her feet and dragged to the door. One of the men who came with them picked up the man I shot and carried him away on his back. The female’s red and swollen eyes met mine when they were at the door with a deadly glare.“You will regret this day.” The female screamed as she was pulled out of the room.Once they were gone, I looked down at my trembling hands, still clutching the gun. Although I knew I didn’t touch any blood, my eyes played tricks on me. Dropp

Hayden-“What is all this?” I asked, sitting down at the table.Dominic was still in the kitchen, with his back turned toward me. I didn’t think I would have much of an appetite, but I couldn’t resist leaning forward and grabbing a piece of bacon off one of the plates. As I took a bite, I looked up just as Dominic turned around.Forgetting about the food, I stopped chewing and stared at Dominic. He wore an apron over a black dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves. Balancing two plates, he walked toward the table. Ever since I have known him, I have never seen him cook. This was also the first time he had ever seemed domesticated. At the same time, a dangerous energy was surrounding him, giving off the perfect balance. It took me a moment to realize I was staring.Forgetting the food in my mouth, I swallowed and almost choked on the bacon. Covering my mouth as I coughed, I reached for the water next to my plate. Taking a few gulps, I set the cup down and patted my chest.“I didn’t know wha

Hayden-“Please don’t tell me you hired her to spy on me.” I groaned.“I didn’t. I found out about it after the two of you met. I did ask her to keep an eye on you, but only for your safety. As far as you two being friends, I never intervened. I never had her report anything to me.”This was a bit too much for me to digest. Finding out that Dominic was alive was one thing, but I couldn’t wrap my head around everything else that followed. Without saying anything, I stood up and slowly returned to the room.“Hayden?” Dominic called after me, but I ignored him.Shutting the door behind me, I leaned against it and slowly slid to the floor. With my knees against my chest, I wrapped my arms around my legs. Tears slowly fell down my cheeks, and my breath stalled.“I need to go to work, but I will be back at noon to check on you.” The door muffled Dominic's voice. It wasn’t until I heard the sound of the front door opening and closing that I could finally take in a breath of air. Hayden-My head felt as if it was splitting in half. Just like the first night I woke up in Dominic’s room, I found him resting on the bed, watching me. This time, however, his eyes didn’t have any warmth or coldness. He was staring at me with an intensity that chilled me to the core.“Why did you drug me again?” I asked as I slowly sat up.“Why did you run?” He countered as he also sat up.Folding my arms over my chest, I let out a huff of frustration. “You won’t let me leave.”“I don’t know how many times I need to repeat myself. Until I can guarantee your safety, you are stuck with me.” He rose from the bed, tucking a section of his shirt into his pants. “Seeing as you can’t be trusted alone, I decided that starting tomorrow, you will be working as my personal assistant.”“You can’t do this to me!” I bolted out of bed. “You aren’t my brother, and you have no right to control me!”“This isn’t up for discussion.” Dominic gaze intensified.Although I have missed my stepfather over the

Hayden-“I took the day off to take you shopping.” Dominic said as he cleared the table after we finished eating.I was tempted to refuse to go anywhere with him. Did I like the idea of leaving the house and shopping? Most definitely. I just didn’t want to feel like I was attached to his hip.Wringing my hands together on my lap, I chewed on the inside of my cheek. I haven’t been here long, and he was determined to keep me as a prisoner, but maybe I could bide my time. I doubt I could escape any time soon since he would likely expect it.It was probably best to go along with what he wanted for now. Maybe after some time, he will drop his guard, and I will be able to escape. In the meantime, I could gain some experience in Fox Ink.“Okay.” I stopped fidgeting and looked up at him.His brows quirked as he leaned against the counter, arms folded over his chest. “You aren’t going to argue with me?”“I thought it over, and maybe you are right. I don’t know much about your life in the mafia

Hayden-One after another, an outfit was thrown at me to try on. I wasn’t sure how long I spent in and out of the dressing room. Every outfit Dominic wanted me to demonstrate. In my opinion, they were all stunning clothes, but Dominic gave the final say.“Next.” Dominic repeated the same word I had heard since the first outfit I tried on.Many of the clothes were put aside for us to buy, while many others were rejected. The first twenty outfits were of different styles, but then the staff started bringing more of a particular style. Most of the clothes I tried on had a sweet and innocent appearance. The colors were white or pastel, a light shade, such as pink, grey, tan, or blue. The business attire outfits that were chosen for me were a mixture of suit jackets in many different colors and textures with matching skirts. Many of the outfits came with their own accessories, such as jewelry, scarves, purses, and hats. He also picked out a lot of casual clothes. Each outfit I tried on did

Hayden-The following morning, I rode in the elevator with Dominic and Tristan. Everything had already been explained to me after I went through the hiring process, but one thing still concerned me. Glancing at Dominic’s back, I wondered if I should say what was on my mind.“Talk.” Dominic demanded, and I wondered if he could read my mind or had eyes on the back of his head to notice something was going on in my head.“I…” I twisted my clasped hands a few times. “I was wondering if we could keep it a secret about knowing each other outside of the office.” I mumbled.“Why?” Dominic and Tristan asked.“I haven’t finished college and don’t want others to get the wrong idea. I want to prove myself independently without everyone thinking I have a backer.”“We can keep it quiet for now, but your safety is my main priority. In the office, I will allow a bit of freedom for you to handle matters on your own, but if anyone tries to jeopardize your safety, I will step in.” Dominic tone was sligh

Hayden-Once he bent over, I secured the blindfold around him and led him out of the house. I guided him to the passenger seat of his Jeep, helped him inside, and shut the door. Once in the driver’s seat, I moved the seat up a little before starting the vehicle. It didn’t take long to arrive at the venue. Lily was waiting for us, holding the wedding dress in her hand. Tristan was also waiting with a broad smile on his face. I knew I could trust Lily by getting Tristan prepared. He had a tuxedo similar to Dominic's, except the colors of his tuxedo were opposite of Dominic’s.“We are doing a double date.” I told Dominic as I got out of the car.Another thing to report: Tristan and Lily were officially a couple. This surprised me at first, but I realized I saw it coming once the shock wore off. Lily admitted they had been dating for two months, but I didn’t learn about it until two weeks ago. I didn’t know if they would have a happily ever after, but at least they both seemed happy curre

Hayden-Since Lexus was no longer in the picture, everything seemed a lot calmer. In the last four weeks, Dominic and my father have been working to bring Fox Ink back to its former glory. They also worked on other businesses.I wasn’t involved with anything as much as I wanted, but it didn’t matter. I still owned the companies my grandfather left me, but my father and Dominic wanted to help me smooth things over. It didn’t bother me too much since I didn’t know the first thing about running a business.I offered to give my father the companies, as he should have been the one to inherit everything, but he declined. Once the companies were in shape, he just wanted to teach me to run everything. He told me that if he had been younger, he wouldn’t mind, but a lot of things have changed while he was in a coma. There were still things he needed to learn. He did agree to help manage things for a few years until I gave birth and the child was old enough to start school. My father also remind

Hayden-When I heard the gunshot, I flinched behind Dominic. I was afraid to look, as I wasn’t sure who Lexus had shot. I heard a commotion around me, making me want to see what was happening. Looking around Dominic, I saw Lexus lying on the ground with his mother crying as she sat by his feet.“Is he dead?” Dominic muttered, but he didn’t move away from me.Agent Leo moved over to where Lexus was, knelt beside him, and felt for a pulse. “He is dead.”Only after confirmation that Lexus was dead did Dominic move away from me. “Although things are finally over, it is a pity he didn’t live long enough to face his crimes.”“Cuff her.” Agent Leo motioned toward Lexus’s mother.“Wait!” I rushed forward and blocked the FBI agent who walked toward Lexus’s mother. “Can’t you let her go?”“It is okay, Dear.” Lexus’s mother patted me on my back. “This is for the best.”“But from my understanding, you haven’t done anything wrong. You even helped us.” I didn’t know why I was trying to help her, bu

Dominic-As soon as I saw the flash of metal, I reacted. Lurching forward, I pushed past Agent Leo. I didn’t care about anything other than preventing Lexus from harming Hayden. Putting myself between Hayden and Lexus, I grabbed the blade of the knife with my hand.“It is over. You have lost.” I ignored the pain of my palm being cut open as I kept a firm grip on the blade. With my free hand, I removed my mask. Lexus released the knife and stepped back right into Agent Leo’s hands. Dropping the knife, I wrapped the mask around my injured hand. As Leo tried to cuff Lexus, I turned around and pulled Hayden in my arms.“You all tricked me!” Leo screamed.“Dominic?” My chest muffled her voice.“It is me.” I tightened my hold on her as I thought about how close I came to losing her. “I never should have pretended and let you be the one to expose him.”“Wait.” Hayden wedged her hands between us, shoving me away from her. “This was your plan?” She looked from me to Tristan, then to Agent Leo,

Hayden-Upon arriving at the press conference, I was a bundle of nerves. Throughout my school years, public speaking had never been my thing. I could perform in front of an audience, but this was a lot different. It helped that Alexander stood in front of everyone with me since he handled the inheritance.“I knew you would do the right thing.” Lexus covered the microphone and leaned over to whisper. “Don’t worry. If you do your part, I will release your friends.”Little did Lexus know that Lily, Tristan, and my father were in the crowd wearing masks. Taking a deep breath, I tried to keep my emotions to myself so he wouldn’t suspect anything. Nodding my head, I looked down at my feet.“First, I want to address that Dominic Fox was recently hit by a car and passed away. Hayden-Over the next couple of days, news about Dominic’s condition blew up. Other than the day Lexus announced he would hold a press conference, I haven’t been able to return to Fox Ink. Almost everyone had been fired, including Tristan. Lexus brought over his employees to keep Fox Ink running.I had almost announced that I was the company's largest shareholder, but Tristan suggested I wait. Agent Leo informed me that the press conference was the perfect opportunity to bring Lexus down. I thought I would be able to do something to save Fox Ink from Lexus, but there wasn’t anything I could do.“Isn’t Tristan supposed to be here by now?” My father rolled his chair out of the kitchen, carrying a plate of sandwiches.“I got a text from him an hour ago, informing me he would be late.” I leaned back on the couch, crossing my legs under me.“Any news about how Dominic is?” He placed the plate on the couch next to me.I had a craving for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so my father want

How is he?” I returned my attention to Tristan.“He hasn’t woken up, and there is a chance he won’t, at least not for a while.” He diverted his gaze.Lifting the covers off me, I climbed out of bed. Walking a few feet to Dominic’s bed, I sat beside him. As I had done with my father, I held his hand in mine. I said nothing, afraid I would start crying if I tried.“Hayden?” Jack’s voice came from the door, so I turned to look at him.“What is it?”“Your father woke up.” Jack’s eyes moved from me to Dominic and back again. “If you want to stay here, I can tell him you won’t return now.”“No. It’s okay.” I placed Dominic’s hand back on the
