Despite the nights previous events, both Layke and Belle managed to keep their pent up tension at bay as they joined Layke’s friends and some of the warriors for breakfast. As he sat drinking his coffee, Layke couldn’t help but watch Belle as she enjoyed the bacon on her plate. There was something so effortlessly sensual about each one of her movements, almost graceful and fluid.

The way she chewed her food and licked those ample lips had his member threatening to combust. Ironically, Belle had no idea about the feelings she could stir up from the simplest of acts, even when his righthand man couldn’t keep his eyes off her either. Beau’s eyes were stuck to her like glue, much to Layke’s dismay but he couldn’t blame him either. Even Layke’s enforces seemed to helplessly admire her. She really was the most unwillingly sensual person he had ever seen. The fact that she was so oblivious to it only made the attraction grow.

Belle lifted her eyes from her food, noticing the way the men on the table seemed to be watching her like hawks and truthfully, it was making her uncomfortable. “Look, I’m really not much of a morning person. In fact, I usually try and sleep through it. If you all continue watching me eat my bacon like I’m an alien, I advise you to proceed with extreme caution.”

The corners of Layke’s lips twitched as he took another sip of his coffee. Her fiery nature tended to amuse him, at least when it wasn’t directed at him. Beau grinned at the hybrid, before sending a wink to his best friend. Layke rolled his eyes and shook his head. “I like her.” Beau confirmed, earning a chuckle from Belle.

“Me too,” a brunette woman agreed as she took a seat next to a man Belle had just been introduced to. Rai, she believed Layke introduced him as, was one of Layke’s closest friends and one of the top enforcers. Apparently Beau was the head warrior, with Rai and another guy who sat across from Belle, named Coen, following closely behind Beaux’s skill. The three men were Layke’s best friends and most trusted confidants.

Belle recognised the brunette as the other woman stood on the podium with them yesterday. “Hi, I’m Isla! It’s such an honour to meet you, Princess Belle. I’m one of the senior enforcers and Rai’s mate.” Belle believed she was a good judge of character, particularly as she had to be due to her status, and she immediately felt nothing but warmth coming from this woman. Belle wondered if this Isla could be someone she may be able to become friends with whilst she was here. The place was swarming with testosterone and she knew she would always benefit from having another girl to chat to.

Belle smiled warmly at the brunette. “Please, call me Belle. It’s lovely to meet you, I’m sure we’ll get to know each other plenty over the next few weeks.” Belle beamed, her morning annoyance beginning to dissipate.

“Layke?”

Layke internally groaned, he’d recognise that voice anywhere. He’d slept with the woman once, once, and yet two years later Sierra had acted as though they were together. Layke presumed Sierra would eventually move on, meet her mate and forget all about him, but apparently the greater gods had a sense of humour and decided this way was more entertaining for them.

Belle glared at Layke, shooting daggers in his direction, making Layke wish the ground would just swallow him up. With how quickly things were moving, Layke had completely forgotten to give Belle a heads up. “Are you kidding me?” Sierra demanded as she stomped to Layke’s side, refusing to even cast a glance in Belle’s direction.

Belle cocked her head as she studied the female, the girl might as well have been a living bratz doll. Over bleached hair, layers of fake tan and mountains of makeup, Belle couldn’t help but think about how the two of them were worlds apart. The girl turned to Belle, suddenly whipping her head in Belle’s direction as she felt her glare. Layke watched as Belle flashed the girl a warm smile, but there was a hint of sinister in that smile, something that warned Sierra she was treading on thin ice and she had better be very, very careful.

Sierra’s focus quickly returned to Layke. “You’re marrying her?” Layke wasn’t sure why Sierra had bothered asking him that, he thought he made it perfectly clear yesterday.

“Did I not already explain that?” Layke asked, already bored of this conversation.

“What about us?” Sierra questioned, the hurt in her voice clear as day. Belle even felt a bit bad for the girl.

Several snorts echoed around the table, as Layke’s friends exchanged amused glances that said Sierra clearly needed a straight jacket. “There is no us, Sierra. We slept together once, two years ago. You really need to move on.” Layke told her flatly, still sipping his coffee as he paid her no mind.

“Aren’t you going to introduce us at least?” Sierra placed her hand on her hip, trying to display some form of power stance.

At this point, Belle couldn’t tell if she sympathised with the girl or was just getting straight up irritated. Layke held out his hand to Belle, inviting her to come to him. Belle, smiling, strolled around the table and allowed Layke to pull her onto his lap. “Belle, Sierra. Sierra, Belle.”

“That’s it?” Sierra scoffed.

Layke rested his chin on Belle’s shoulder, oddly finding comfort in her closeness and her intoxicating peachy scent. Layke had always known that Sierra was hoping he would mate her and make her his Queen, but he didn’t realise she actually thought she had a chance purely because of a drunken night many moons ago.

Belle rolled her eyes at the girl, any sympathy was gone and all she felt was anger. “Is this the part where you inform me about how you’re the love of his life, the one he’ll never get over and he’ll always run back to? Perhaps, I’m supposed to become crazy jealous because I’ll never compare and so forth. Unfortunately, Sierra.. is it? As I was just explaining, I’m not a morning person.. like at all really and honestly, it’s just way too early for me to gather up that kind of response. But if you really do want that, maybe try again later.”

Something about the fact that Layke had slept with the women irked Belle. She envisioned slapping her just for that simple fact alone, if she was being truly honest. But there was nothing between Belle and Layke, eventually they would go their separate ways and Belle quickly reminded herself of that before she decided to claw the eyes out of the girl stood in front of her.

“I don’t get it, Layke.” Sierra scoffed. “Sure, she’s a princess but she’s not even your type! I mean, she’s thin. And mouthy. And tiny. I bet she can’t even throw a decent punch.”

“Who is this bitch?” Nia gasped.

“Hey, I’ve been told I could have been a hand model!” Belle retorted.

“And paw model!” Nia interjected.

“You’re not his type!”

“Why not? Because I can read and write? Oh, and don’t forget my incredible personality.”

“Because you’re a filthy mutt.” Sierra growled.

Before Sierra could even blink and knew what was happening, Belle saw red and found her hand wrapped tightly around Sierra’s throat as she pinned her against the cold wall. It took every ounce of Belle’s strength to restrain Nia who was now itching to be let loose. Layke and Beau stood either side of Belle in protective stances. “What. Did. You. Just. Call. Me.” Belle bit out each word.

Sierra coughed as her eyes made a desperate plea with Layke, who only stood by his fiancés side and glared at the enforcer. Fake marriage or not, no one else knew this yet which meant Sierra was willing disrespecting the love of his life and his soon-to-be Queen.

After realising Layke would be of no assistance, Sierra diverted her eyes to the ground. “Let me make one thing clear, Sierra.” Belle growled. “I’m much stronger and faster than you will ever be. Your tiny brain couldn’t even possibly imagine the strength I have. You may be a good fighter here, but against me? You’re a child in training. I’m royal by blood in both fae and wolf, you don’t stand a chance against me. I could rip your head off your shoulders in a sudden movement and you wouldn’t even realise it had happened. Do you really want to take me on?” She spat.

Sierra rapidly shook her head, still refusing to look Belle in the eye. “I’m sorry.” She whispered.

Belle used her grip on Sierra’s neck to raise her higher against the wall. “I didn’t catch that. Say it again?”

“I’m sorry.” Sierra replied clearly, choking from Belle’s grip.

“Do not make me make an example out of you, Sierra. It will not be pretty.” Belle growled.

“I think I’ll go get my bags now, we’re due back in Midsummer shortly.” Belle said sweetly, releasing a gasping Sierra to the floor, before she made her way around her and pointedly ignore the enforcer. “Oh, and close your mouth, Layke. You’ll catch flies.” Perplexed and also slightly horny as a result of the alpha vibes rolling off of her, Layke watched after Belle as she strode out the room nibbling on her last piece of bacon. Once Belle was out of sight, Layke’s eyes landed on Sierra, who was desperately rubbing her neck. At least it wasn’t him on Belle’s bad side this time. He gave his three men a look, instructing them to follow him out of the dining room as he prepared to leave his home once again. He couldn’t help but chuckle and feel a slight sense of pride when he heard Coen mutter, “damn, that female is freakishly strong for her size.” - “Well, you certainly made an impression.” Layke snorted, trying to refrain the corners of his lips from twitching as he focused on driv

Belle glanced at herself in the mirror, she didn’t remember a time she’d ever felt as beautiful as she did now. Her thick, blue hair was styled into loose waves with pieces from the sides being braided until they met in the middle at the back of her head. A few loose strands fell down the side of her face in an effortless yet put together fashion. Her sold gold tiara rested on her head perfectly, with potentially the biggest topaz gemstone she had ever seen positioned in the centre. Her lips had been painted a natural shade of pink, allowing the centre of attention to be on the soft blue eyeshadow along her eyelids, encouraging her ocean eyes to pop even bright than usual. Matching her hair and makeup, she was wearing the most exquisite topaz shaded gown she had ever seen. It started with a strapless corset, amplifying the curves of her body as it enveloped her waist, before delicate gold embroidery separated the corset into a free flowing, floor length skirt with a 3 metre train. The rest of the day had gone smoothy, the people of the two kingdoms had began to bond and intermingle as they accepted their new world. Layke had expected some animosity between the avalonions and the summerians, due to the different beliefs many of the subjects held, but things couldn’t have gone better. An even bigger blessing was that Sierra had decided to stay at home and miss the wedding. It was drama neither Layke nor Belle needed that day and with Belle having her werewolf friends here, Layke knew how easy it could have turned into a blood bath. Since the ceremony, the pair had acted as though the kiss between them never happened. Belle had put the feelings the kiss created in a locked box inside her mind, deciding it was purely because of the adrenaline of the day and the heat of the moment. Layke believed it was purely the tension from the night in his office that had stirred up those feelings and as long as the pair stopped bickering like fire and ice, they wouldn’t have

The moon had descended and the sun had risen in what seemed like a blink of an eye to anyone else but Belle had experienced practically every drawn out minute. Layke’s warm body flushed against her had anything other than sleep pacing through her mind, forcing her to frequently toss and turn before she had finally given up on sleep taking over. As she ran her fingers over the material of the bedspread in her Avalon bedroom, Belle questioned her ability to stay sane during the coming weeks, particularly now she had a husband who’s mere voice had her body deceiving her. She resented the effect he had on her, every second in his presence she wanted to either rip his head off or his clothes, there was no happy medium. “I don’t think you’re supposed to look so glum the day after your wedding, Belle.” Sutton commented, noticing the odd quietness in her friend. “Was the package not what you hoped it would be?” Immi insinuated with a pitiful smile. Belle pressed her lips firmly together t

“How can you possibly appear even more flustered than before?” Sutton laughed, leaning back in her chair as she observed the irritation rolling off the Queen in waves. Belle remained tight lipped as she entered the living room where Sutton, Lottie, Immi, Beau, Rai and Coen had been sat waiting for the last 30 minutes for her and Layke. Amusement danced in her friends’ eyes as they noticed an equally flustered King following closely on Belle’s tail. “How gracious of you to join us.” Rai commented, receiving a glare that had his lips twitching from the King. Belle slumped into a chair besides Immi, avoiding Layke’s gaze as he sat across from her. Neither of them quite knew what to do with themselves after that whole ordeal outside, feeling like children being caught with their fingers in the cookie jar. Unlike Belle, Layke had managed to get changed since their interaction, and now she found herself practically drooling over the way his biceps were straining under the fabric of his

It had been a few days since the incident in Layke’s office and Belle had managed to stay out of his way thus far, as had been her intention all along. What had occurred between them a few days ago was only further encouragement that she needed to keep her distance, her body couldn’t be trusted around him and Nia’s infatuation with him only made it that much more difficult to concentrate when she had her purring in her head. She remembered the smirk Layke wore as her body reacted to his touch, begging him to keep his hands on her and it had drove her crazy, she wanted to slap that smug smile straight off his face. If Immi hadn’t mindlinked her at such a pivotal moment, Belle had no idea where the interaction between them would have ended up. The tracking team were expected to get back in a few hours with some answers on what they had found, meaning she wouldn’t be able to avoid Layke today. Her best bet at dealing with his irritating presence was to go for a run before the enforcers

The pair separated immediately, watching each other with flushed cheeks and confused expressions. Belle inwardly scolded herself for getting herself in this situation again, it was exactly why she had been avoiding him like the plague for the last few days. It infuriated her that her mind and body were on such different pages, but her body certainly had a mind of its own whenever he was in close proximity. What the hell is that? Layke pressed his lips together, he was convinced more than ever that this little she-devil in front of him had somehow got a spell on him. How could he go from scolding her to wanting her wrapped around him in seconds? He couldn’t get his head around it, around how she had such an effect on him. It was beyond an infatuation, the spitfire had a hold on him and he couldn’t get out of it. The confusion infuriated him. It infuriated her. For two people who supposedly wanted nothing to do with the other, they sure couldn’t keep away from each other and that fact

Belle groaned, noticing the smug ‘I win’ on Layke’s face as she joined the others who were waiting with the SUVs. Not only could she not avoid Layke for the next couple of days, but he had also decided to appoint Belle her own enforcers who were now following her around like lost little pups. Like it wasn’t bad enough Layke treating her like she was fragile, now she had another two egotistical men watching her every move. “Have you noticed my surveillance team?” Belle muttered, descending the stairs. Layke smiled. “I noticed. I approve.” She grumbled in response. “I’ll bet you do.” Layke shrugged unrepentantly. “I like knowing you’re safe.” “And yet you haven’t thrown out Lucifer’s spawn.” Belle shot Sierra a glare, observing how the blonde stared daggers back at her. Belle grinned, if looks could kill – she would be dead. Chuckling, Layke shrugged again. “I know she was difficult in the past, but she’s a good warrior.” Ignoring Layke’s comment, Belle joined her friends by one

Layke rushed out of the SUV towards the Midummer castle entrance, climbing two steps at a time before striding straight to Belle’s room. He could feel where she was through the mark, just like he could feel the pain she was in and it stung, really stung. He also knew it was late and she was probably fast asleep by now, but he couldn’t wait, he had to see her and he had to see her now. “Belle!” he called out behind her door, his hand resting on the locked doorknob. Belle gasped, startled, quickly sitting up in her bed. What the hell was he doing here? She couldn’t see him, she just couldn’t. Looking into his eyes would hurt her and Nia too much, it would rip open the wound that was ever so slowly healing. “You shouldn’t be here!” she called, desperately hoping that by some miracle he left her alone. “Please leave,” she sighed. She didn’t have the fight in her, not anymore. “No, baby, I won’t leave.” Her heart tugged at the endearment. “Let me in, please.” He pleaded, though he wasn’

Nia turned her gaze to Layke, still keeping the enforcer pinned beneath her, and Belle hoped her worst fear hadn’t come true. But when she saw the longing in his sharp green eyes as he gazed at Sierra, her heart stopped. No, this couldn’t be happening. She knew there was a chance he would find his mate, but her? Her? The gods surely had to be laughing at her right now, utterly amused by the chances. But it wasn’t his birthday until tomorrow. He shouldn’t be able to recognise his mate yet? How was this possible? Question after question spiralled in Belle’s mind as Layke was unable to move his gaze from Sierra, failing to notice the hurt Belle was feeling. Her heart was shattered, a dull ache filling her with nothing but emptiness. She couldn’t be here. She couldn’t see this. “Layke,” Sierra cried. Layke felt like he was going crazy. There was no way this traitor could be his mate. His breathing laboured and uneven, his fists were clenched. No, this couldn’t be happening. It had to b

Time seemed to stand still, there was an eery silence in the air that had everyone on edge. No one uttered a word, no one uttered a sound. They were in battle mode, anxiously waiting for their enemy to arrive. The wind whistled amongst the trees, leaves flickering through the air. Tension was thick, suffocating, even. If you listened intently enough, you’d heard the thundering of heartbeats echoing along the fortress wall, threatening to rip from their chests. Belle held her head high, her eyes narrowed on the clearing, waiting for those who were against them to arrive. Her chest heaved, the threat that was soon ahead filling her with rage. No one tried to hurt her people and got away with it. Today was about revenge. Today was about justice. Today was about the future. She had a one-track mind right now and it could be summarised with one word: kill. Her mother stood by her side, her long blonde hair dancing in the wind, determination glazed in her eyes, her fingertips tingling wi

Rura sent word to Henrie that the Gylandies were attempting an attack on Moonbeam again two days time, which meant that Layke, Belle, her royal family and the rest of the group had been running around resembling headless chickens as they finalised all the finer details which would allow them to be ready on battle day. Belle and Serena had taken over elemental training, wanting to see first-hand what each enforcer which focused on power rather than combat had to offer. They needed to figure out their front line of defence. With magic being involved, combat was important but not as important as matching the elemental strength of the Gylandies, who were likely to be more powerful than your average faerie considering they were drawing on blood magic. Of course, Serena, Belle, Layke, Cobi, Arlen and Henrie were going to be the strongest faeries they had, but that wouldn’t be enough. Belle was pleased to discover there were four other enforcers who had the shielding element, like her and

Layke was striding purposefully towards the door, intent of hunting down the little witch that had tried to hurt his wife. Belle dashed after him and leapt onto his back, locking her arms around his neck and her legs around his middle. “Layke, listen to me. No, you can’t go after her, it’s what they want. You’ll be walking right into a trap. They knew there was a chance that creep wouldn’t return. They knew there was a chance he would be caught. And if he was, then you’d go in guns blazing.” He continued onwards as if Belle wasn’t even there, completely undeterred by her weight – though it was fair to say she didn’t weight that much. Deserting her plan to placate him, Belle took to another approach. She kicked her legs madly and bit his ear. “Layke, do not do this! For fuck sake, will you listen!” Layke halted abruptly and shifted her so that she was wrapped around his front. He held her gaze as he growled. “Don’t, Belle. Don’t ask me to ignore this. Chapter 36: It had been two days since Belle’s family and the Fer Fung has arrived in Midummer and it had been a week since they last heard from Rura, meaning they were expecting to get an update any day now. They were travelling to Avalon today in readiness, considering it was where the Gylandies were most likely to next attack. Most of the Midsummer warriors had already moved over to Avalon in preparation, with a few more coming each passing day. They didn’t want to alert the Gylandies by having hundreds of people move kingdoms at once, so it was decided that it would be smarter to do it in small doses so it didn’t trigger an alert. Travelling back had been eventful. With the Fer Fung, the Amaris family and the rest of the gang all needing to get back to Avalon, the SUV’s had been rather cramped. Belle and her brothers had quickly resorted to their bickering, not surprising anyone. Belle had accused Cobi of purposefully taking up much more room than required in the back of the SUV

“You two seem… happy.” Queen Serena smirked, observing her daughter sprawled over Layke on the sofa. She had expected Belle and Layke to have warmed up to one another by now, but it was a shock to see just how comfortable they had gotten. Serena always knew Layke would be a good match for her daughter, he levelled her out. Where she struggled, Layke thrived and vice versa. Together, if they actually took the time to learn about each other, they could work wonderfully. And as much as her feisty daughter could handle herself, Serena knew Layke would protect Belle the way a husband should do. Belle needed to learn to let people in and trust them, she always kept herself so isolated and never allowed anyone to have any power over her. Serena hoped that the marriage with Layke would help Belle open up slightly and it seemed her plan had worked brilliantly. She also knew about the deal Belle had made with Gladdis. Tangled in the sheets of their bed, Belle closed her eyes and found their connection instantly. She felt it everywhere, like Layke was a shadow. She couldn’t touch or feel it, but it was there – a part of her. She knew he was genuinely happy they had bonded, knew he was serious when he said he wouldn’t let her leave him no matter what. When she opened her eyes, Layke framed her face with his hands, brushing his thumb over her bottom lip. “I’d never purposefully hurt you. Never. I’m a man which means I’ll fuck up. Regularly. “Is this your new thing, Belle – putting space between us?” Layke shook his head, tsking at her. “It won’t work. We’re mates.” “Wrong. We might have mated, but we didn’t do it because we chose each other and wanted to have that bond, we came together for a deal. That makes it an arrangement, not a mating.” “I don’t care for what you want to call it, Belle. The point is, I’ve claimed you and we have a connection you can ignore. Neither of us can't ignore.” “And this connection means I am supposed to give you whatever you want?” Belle snorted. “Well fuck you.” “I know you’re upset with me, baby, but did you give me a chance to aplogise?
