As soon as Thea left the meeting, she made her way toward her car. She still needed to visit the outreach center since it had been a while since her last visit.
The workers there must be worried about the budget cut as it is…
“Thea…” She heard someone call her and she turned around to find James standing there.
“May I have a moment?” He asked with a serious expression on his face which made Thea wonder what was going on.
“Of course,” she said as she followed him to a side sitting room near her grandfather’s office.
“Is everything okay?” She asked as she sat down before him.
“I wanted to talk to you about something in private,” he said, looking more hesitant than ever.
“What is it?” She asked, feeling nervous.
“It’s about the outreach program funds…” He said, looking at her with worry, “You know how your grandfather cut the funds for it… There is much more to this than what he told you.”
Thea remained silent as she kept listening to James.
“You know how the funding for the outreach program was something your mother arranged from her one safe deposit from her family,” James explained and Thea nodded.
This project was her mother’s life. She funded it with the inheritance money from her own family claiming that she didn’t need the money and it was better used to support other people to achieve their dreams and make a future for themselves.
“Yeah, she just left it for grandfather to take care of and raise. Now he is using it to get me to do whatever he wants…” Thea said feeling so frustrated upon remembering this fact that she wanted to strangle her grandfather.
“I wouldn’t say that your grandfather wouldn’t do this,”
“That’s because he would…” Thea interrupted and James laughed,
“You’re right. That man is more sneaky than we think… But, this time, I can assure you that it’s not what’s going on…” He said with a sad smile,
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“You remember how your mother had an older brother…” He said and Thea nodded.
“I thought they weren’t in contact anymore because he disapproved of my father. He wanted mom to marry one of his business partners.” Thea answered and James nodded.
“They weren’t in contact anymore but your uncle never gave up on trying to take advantage of her.” James explained, “After he learned about your mom passing away in that accident, he did something quite unexpected and also despicable,”
“What did my uncle do?” Thea asked her heart skipping a beat.
“He had been having financial problems for a while, so he used his father, your grandfather’s will to falsify a statement that he has some right to your mother’s money,” He explained, “Your grandfather received the notification last month and the money was taken right away leaving the program without funding,”
“Are you saying that the program has been running low on funding for a whole month without me knowing?!” She asked, feeling betrayed and incompetent at the same time.
“Your grandfather was funding it this whole time, but, there was only so much he could do without prior notice. I think he wanted to let you down gently and he also wanted to use it to make you do the research he had wanted you to do for such a long time, but he didn’t choose the best way to deal with things…” He told her with a sympathetic smile making Thea wonder if she should feel bad about her grandfather funding the project from his pocket or feel angry at him for trying to use the situation to his advantage.
“Did I ever tell you that grandfather is a twisted man…” She commented and James gave her an awkward laugh.
She sighed feeling more at a loss than she was before.
“Now I know that there is no way to get grandpa to reconsider. I need to look for another way…” She said.
“You’re still doing this?” James asked her.
“Of course! I’m not giving up on mother’s legacy,” She answered and James watched her for a while before saying.
“How about your father’s legacy?” He asked with a deep frown on his face.
“I’m sure grandfather has that covered,” She answered curtly before standing up not bothering to pause or look back at James.
She didn’t want to see the see the disappointed look in his eyes too.
“But you still decided to go back to doing research,” James said.
“I’m a professor, it’s part of my job description,” She said, “Can you please send me the details about the money transfer thing? I want to look it over before deciding what to do in the future,” She added,
“Of course! I will send you the paperwork and you can contact your mother’s lawyer for more details.” He answered.
“Alright, Thank you for telling me, James,” She said looking back at him to find him looking at her with a fond smile.
“You’re a good woman, Thea. And a wonderful daughter,” He said with a smile.
“I wonder about that, James,” she said with a soft smile and he gave her a worried look.
That’s when she opted to leave the oppressing room. She didn’t need that look from James, she already knew how pathetic she was without seeing it.
As she left the room, she got a text on her phone.
“Hi, Thea! I hope you’re still on campus. I was wondering if you could cover Professor Wilson’s Lecture. He just had an emergency and I don’t think he will make it.”
Thea read the text one more time from their department’s secretary before she sighed.
Just the fact that their secretary was texting her and not calling was something that made her wonder if Robert is involved.
Checking her schedule, she realized that she had the afternoon mostly off and decided that she could owe both the secretary and Professor Wilson one.
She made her way toward her office to get her material ready. It would be interesting to teach an impromptu class as it is, but Professor Wilson’s courses were well outlined, and she already had an idea about what she was going to teach his students.
Before long, she was ready, and she made her way to the lecture hall. That’s when she heard her phone ping again.
“I forgot to let you know. Someone from Chim&Bio will be auditing this lecture today.” The secretary’s text said and Thea wondered whether she should laugh or just feel plain annoyed.
This was definitely one of Robert’s ploys to catch her off guard. Having an auditor at a lecture that wasn’t his, to begin with, would not be a good first impression of their new partner.
Under normal cases…
But what Robert didn’t realize is that Professor Wilson and her had very similar teaching material and she worked with him often to know his lectures by heart by now. She was going to be completely fine…
Or at least that was what she thought. Until she stood there in the hall in front of the person who would be auditing her lecture, wondering how her day could just go from bad to worse once again.
How could HE be here?!
Thea wondered where the commotion came from as she stepped into the lecture hall. She was pretty sure that it wasn’t because of her. It wasn’t that unusual for her to cover for Professor Wilson so the students mustn’t be too surprised by her presence there. Continuing to walk down the stairs, she put down her bag on the table and looked up at her class. Everyone was busy looking from her to someone in the back row. And as her eyes traveled up following their gazes, she realized what drove their attention this much. Sitting at one of the far back rows was no one other than him… The stranger from the park. The man who almost ran her over. Sitting there, Thea couldn’t help but note why the students were making such a fuss about him. He was sitting there looking down at his phone in his clearly expensive three piece suit. He looked too much out of place and to be honest way out of league of his entourage which made Thea wonder why she hadn’t seen that when she first met him. So… This
“That your boyfriend?”Thea paused for a moment before looking at Lucian with shock. She honestly hadn’t expected that question. Not from the man who didn’t seem to be interested in anything other than Biology and probably his company.Looking back at him, she was even more surprised when she found his dark green gaze on her unwavering and unnerving as if it was trying to penetrate into the depth of her soul and nestle the flame burning within it inside her.For a moment, Lucian looked like a barely restrained beast as he looked at her.“What makes you say that?” she breathed out wondering why she was feeling suffocated.Seeming to get out of his trans, Lucian’s look softened and the intensity in his eyes disappeared as if it was never there.“Hmm… well, for starters, He was trying very hard not to glare at me,” He answered with a glint in his eyes as if he enjoyed that particular detail.“And secondly, the way he barged into your office with an entitled expression is telling me that
The car spun for a moment as soon as Lucian pushed the brakes and Thea’s head slammed against the window rendering her dizzy and disoriented for a moment. She saw Lucian reach out for her steadying her body even though she was wearing a seatbelt and wondered why he wasn’t more concerned about himself.Everything was blurry and fast for a moment and the only thing Thea could hear was Lucian cursing and the sound of the tires squealing against the ground.“Damn it! Thea!” Lucian called as soon as the car stopped, “Thea! Are you okay?! ”“I-I’m fine…” She mumbled as she looked at him to see him taking a deep relieved breath as he removed his seatbelt and reached for her head.“It doesn’t look like you’re bleeding,” He said his eyes looking serious as he examined her.“I’m fine. It was just a bump,” She said pushing his and away, “More importantly, are you okay?” She asked and he gave her a slightly surprised look before smiling.“I’m fine. Except for the fact that I almost had a heart at
Thea sighed as she pulled up at the university’s parking lot and made her way out of the car. She knew that meeting her uncle wasn’t going to be easy, but she didn’t know that it was going to be this hard. She tried making an appointment under different guises, but she was always politely redirected by his personal assistant. Now she was wondering why she was making the effort to be courteous at all. She should just barge in and say what she had to tell him and then leave. If it wasn’t for the risk of having him put his guard up against them and cover his mistakes. She needed to find another way to talk to him. As she was deep in her thoughts, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and pulled it out. “I’m on my way in, Pen,” She said into the phone, “I will be there in five minutes,” “Well, hurry up. It feels like your Mr. CEO is going to come get you with his personal helicopter if you’re any more late than this,” She told her and Thea sighed. “I keep telling you that he’s not
“Pen…” Thea started trying to calm the storm but it was already too late. Pen was already slamming her hand against the table and glaring at Lucian like a true angry bird character as her red locks flew around her shoulders in a magnificent sigh while her jewel-like eyes shone like two beams of laser. Haden who sat before her looked at her as if in a daze and Thea immediately knew that the man wasn’t going to be any help in this situation. Nor was Lucian who was looking at Pen with the same provocative smile as if he hadn’t just dropped a small bomb into her lap. “This man is insinuating that you don’t deserve your position, Thea!” Pen said, “I of all people will never be able to sit around and listen to him say something like this about you while knowing everything you went through to get here,” “Pen! Calm down. What he’s trying to say isn’t like this. He just said it without considering his words,” She said, “Oh, I mean every word I said…” Lucian said and Thea turned around and
Thea stepped out of her car as soon as she parked breathing in the cool fresh air of mid-morning. It felt like it has been a while since she went out like this and she felt the tightness in her chest dissipate as she looked around the small building in front of her. “You’re here…” She heard a male voice behind her and turned around to find a young man in his mid-thirties with short light brown curly hair and kind eyes. “Peter, hi…” She said with an awkward smile and Peter gave her a pointed look before giving her a sigh. “Let’s talk inside…” He said leading the way into the building and she silently followed him. “Thea!” She heard someone call her name as soon as she came into the building and looked at the reception desk. The young girl there came running toward her giving her a hug that pushed her back a few steps. “Hi, Nelly! Glad to see you’re doing well!” Thea answered hugging the girl back. “I am! I love attending classes at the community college and Peter said that I have
Thea shivered a little as she stood in front of the high-end restaurant waiting for an opportunity to go inside. According to her intel after spending so much time with her uncle’s old security officer, she knew that her uncle always had lunch in the restaurant every evening. It was a hard place to get into without being considered a regular or having a reservation, so after failing to get inside a few times, with the last time being grabbed by the arm and pulled out by one of the security guards, she stood there brooding and waiting for an opportunity to slip inside as the cool air began nibbling into her skin and seeping through her clothes. Seriously, she should have thought this through. Or maybe she should have attended those events her grandfather asked her to go to in his stead. That way she would have at least had access to someone who would give her an early reservation in the restaurant. “So this is why you refused to have lunch with me?” Thea turned around to find Lucian
Thea remained shocked as she watched Lucian's rage upon seeing the bruises on her arm. Looking down she wondered what could make him have this kind of reaction. Were there really bruises there? And they were there… light bruises forming lightly on her skin forming the shape of a distinct handprint. There was a distinct gasp from the hostess as she looked at them then she averted her gaze as she eyes the security guard who stood there eying them with careful eyes. Yupp… Those handprints were in definitely his. From when he grabbed her to forcefully remove her from the restaurant grounds. If she didn’t do something, this situation was clearly going to escalate and even become a scene if the way Lucian was looking at her arm was anything to go by. She couldn’t fathom where this completely exaggerated reaction came from but she knew that the priority is to calm him down. Because it’s not to anyone’s advantage, especially hers if she was going to get a chance to crash her uncle’s lunch
“Oh lord…” Thea mumbled as she closed her eyes looking down at the book in her hands barely seeing the words.“Did you say something?” Lucian asked as he leaned forward on the kitchen counter to look at her.“No, nothing,” she said with a smile, and he nodded, going back to preparing whatever it is that he was preparing.Thea stole another glance at him, feeling her heartbeat faster at the sight of him in his unbuttoned shirt and waistcoat hugging his muscles in a perfect fit that made her almost swoon. It had been like this since she got back from the hospital, so much that it had gotten unbearable. At first, Lucian was simply more attentive, especially since she was having trouble dealing with the pain from moving around. He had been adamant about not leaving her alone to the point of intending to sleep on the chair bestie her!In the end, he slept the whole night on the bed beside her on top of the covers when she insisted that he shouldn’t sleep on the chair. He didn’t touch her n
For a while, it was quiet. An absolute quietness that was both peaceful and disturbing. There were moments like flashes when voices would reach her sometimes calling her name and sometimes talking amongst each other. But she was never able to pull through long enough to truly know what was going on.It was by the time that her awareness grew more alert when she heard them. The two distinct voices she knew so well.“How could you let this happen?! How could you when she was right beside you?!”“When are you going to stop blaming others for your own problems? You lost Thea because you acted like you could control her. Stop trying to blame me and start trying to figure out how to redeem yourself!”These words were followed by the distinct sound of a slap. And even in her sleep, Thea would later realize what truly went on that day.“…”“Are you alright?” Another voice asked.“Yeah… can you go check on him?”The silence that followed after that was deafening. Thea tried shifting her hand a
“You didn’t answer my question,” Lucian said in the same calm tone as if this man hadn’t just threatened to violate her in front of him. “Who. Is. Behind. You” Lucian enunciated each word coming out of his mouth.Thea’s eyes moved away from the sight before her to look at Lucian’s hands. They were clenched in tight fists that she could distinguish through the darkness. She didn’t need to doubt whether or not Lucian was provoked by this man’s words. Because she could feel the rage coursing through his tight muscles ready to spring out at a moment’s notice. The man paused looking at Lucian with a blank face, the smile completely gone as he looked at him. Thea thought for a moment that he was going to turn violent when he simply asked.“Why? Are you going to pay me more than them?” He asked.Thea felt instant relief when the man said that, if he could be convinced with money, then…“If we can reach a deal,” Lucian answered, and the man smirked.Something was wrong, seriously wrong. His e
Thea's head felt as if it was going to split in pain as she began to regain her consciousness. She groaned and tried to shift wondering why she was having another hangover when she didn't even remember drinking. That's when the memory of her last moment of consciousness hit her brutally like a slap.Thea opened her eyes frantically looking around her. In a panicked move that did nothing but kick her back to the concrete ground with a hard thud as her hands remained tied behind her back unable to do anything to block the impact. The air got knocked from her lungs and she gritted her teeth looking around her trying to distinguish where she was only to hear a voice from near her."Hey... It's okay, don't move abruptly,"Thea turned around and felt her eyes well up with tears as she looked into the blue eyes she had been trying so hard to avoid for more than a month."What happened?" She asked as she tried to sit up this time succeeding as she maneuvered herself up."We were kidnapped. I
"What the hell did you just do?" Thea looked back at her friend to find her looking at her with a deep frown as she held her phone in her hand mid-gesture as if she was too shocked to continue what she was doing."I asked him to leave..." Thea answered simply and Pen sighed."I know. I was there. But why would you do this? He came all the way here from his meeting and raised hell because they took you in like this,""Well. that's all pretense. We're supposed to be a loving couple after all. I just don't want him involved too much in my problems," Thea stated as she turned around intending to walk outside."Are you okay with this?" Pen asked."Of course. This is for the best," She stated feeling a pang in her chest at the words she uttered.Somehow, she could see Lucian's blue gaze as it filled with hurt when she asked him to leave. His face as he looked up at her on the stairs telling her that he wanted to be with her. "Are you sure you're okay with this? Didn't you go a bit too far
Everything was a lie… Every single thing. Every moment, every word, and every touch. Even the sincere moments of consolation that drew out her strength, and the silly fights over small things. It was all a well-orchestrated scheme to make her hopelessly fall in love. How ridiculous is that? Just how much effort did it have to take to make her believe this? A pang rang through Thea’s chest as she felt the moment of realization she had been avoiding for more than a month draw near. “Did you hear what I just said, Professor Keaton?” The detective asked and Thea looked at him a bit out of it trying to gather her thoughts. “Sorry, can you repeat that?” She asked as she looked at him. “I was asking if you knew something about the money. Your uncle keeps insisting that you used it for illegal activities and we can’t find any trace of it in your accounts,” the detective said making Thea sigh. “As I said for the fifth time. There are no unusual activities and the money went to charity,” s
"Professor... Professor Keaton!" Thea was startled as she looked back at her student who was looking at her with a worried expression on her face."Yes... Sorry, I was lost in thought for a moment there," She said with a soft smile."You seem more tired after coming from your honeymoon, Professor. Are you sure that you're okay?" She insisted and Thea smiled at the young woman and nodded."Of course, I was just thinking about something. did you want something?" She asked."Oh, yes. There was another bouquet for you from your husband. I left it in your new office, and the data from last week's tests are out," She said with a sly smile as she handed her the results printed on a document. As she looked down at it to find a little envelope on top."This is.." She began only to find her student already walking away with a grin."Came with the flowers!" She announced as she disappeared into the other side of the lab.She lifted the envelope to find her name written on it with the distinct
Lucian woke up with a start as his hand slipped from the edge of the table making him lose his equilibrium. Looking around him, he sighed when he realized that he was still sitting in the kitchen with the lights on waiting before his silent phone. He had returned home that evening from work eager to try and have dinner with Thea, knowing that she should be home before him. As he waited and waited, he realized that Thea was probably dining outside and had his meal in lonely silence mulling over how to win her over again.Walking through the house, he sighed at the unfamiliarity of the place. It was a new house even for him. A place he had been hoping to live in with her. Now that he was, he realized that just living with her was never going to be enough. Because even though she was by his side, she felt farther away than when she disappeared last month.Reaching for his phone, he took a deep breath and tapped the screen calling her phone. The call went straight to voicemail. Worry star
Thea walked into the coffee shop looking around for her friend. She waved at her from across the room, and as she was walking toward her, she could see that she wasn't alone.Thea paused giving an exasperated sigh as she glared at the grinning, other person, who wasn't supposed to be there. Instead of looking guilty or even bothered, he smiled at her and lifted his cup in greeting.Thea looked at the door ready to walk outside, but the sight of the mint tea waiting for her on the table made her hesitate. Making a split-moment decision, she gave in to temptation and sat down reaching for the cup and inhaling the fresh herbal scent."Told you that the tea would be a good bait..." Peter said with a smirk and Pen sighed."Sorry. He insisted on coming as soon as he knew that we were meeting," She said.Thea took a sip from her tea and savored it completely ignoring the two."Well, she's not answering my calls and she's never in her office when I visit. If I go to her house, Lucian will pro
