RIO

The drive to the estate was a quiet one except for the constant tapping of Mel’s feet on the floor of the car.

“If you’ve got something to say, spit it out.” I scold her.

Mel turned towards me, opened her mouth as if to say something, but then shut it again and turned to face the front of the car, obviously frustrated.

“Is this what they call, ‘Wife tantrum’?” I turn to face her. “You see, I told you we would be a good fit, you are already behaving like a wife.”

“Do I have to move in with you?”

I lean towards her, staring only at her lips. “Scared you won’t be able resist me, huh?”

I blow lightly on her lips and she lets out a little gasp in response.

God, I love the way she responds to me. Guess this little challenge won’t last long.

Mel pulls back and shifts away from me. “You sure have a lot of confidence in yourself.”

I laugh in response and turn away from her. I still have a lot of time to enjoy my darling Mel.

The car makes a turn from the highway and journeys down a familiar bumpy path. Even though I tend to spend most of my time away from the Rafe estate, either travelling or living in my condo in Tuscany, I always loved coming home. The trees that line the road leading to the estate always had birds chirping as if welcoming me back. The Estate was situated at the far end of the woods and always made me feel like I was leaving my crazy world behind.

“Is that a chapel?” Mel voice jolted me from my day dreaming.

I smiled. That was my mother’s idea of making our ways right with God. “Yes, they are the only neighbors we have for a lot of miles. My mother had donated the land and helped build the chapel for the locals in the area.”

Mel smirked.

I turn to her. “What?”

“The mafia building a chapel, you don’t think that’s ironic?”

“No, we are not the devil.”

“You are the next worst things.” She whispers.

Ignoring her, I continued. “My mother was a local from the area and very religious. When we were younger, she always made sure we attended the services. My father claims he did it to please her, but he sure goes there a lot” I say smiling. “I don’t mind them though. I like to think of their really loud hymns as alarm sounds, especially the morning ones.”

I turn to see her smiling at me. She really is beautiful.

“You are really close with your family?” Mel asked

“Who isn’t?” I could sense the sudden sadness from her and wanted to find out why but my phone ringtone interrupted me.

“Excuse me a moment” I put the phone on speaker. Mel nods in response.

“Hello”

“I thought you were supposed to come back today”

“Ciao Padre. Miss me already?” I greeted my father fondly in Italian.

“Bloody hell, you little brat. I come to greet you only to be informed you had left on a business meeting. Which I know is a lousy front for your escapades”.  He scolds me but his voice sound loving.

“You know me too well, Father”. I said. “I have something to tell you once I get back though”

“In the name of the Virgin Mary, what have you done again?”

“Oh, ye of little faith” I responded.

“Well, your image precedes you” He complained.

 “I love you too, Papa”.

“You rascal” He laughed. “I have already left for the business gala in Paris. If it’s not life threating, we would talk later”.

“Of course, Papa. Have a safe trip”. I end the call.

The car comes to a stop as we approach a large heavily wired fence with a single gate. I unbuckle my seat belt and open the door to get down when Mel pulls on my shirt.

“Oh, I’m sorry. We are here” I tell her.

“Where?” She sounded confused.

I get down from the car, turn to her side, open the door and unbuckle her seat belt. “We are home”. I take her hand to lead her out of the car towards the gate. I open it to a beautiful view that always takes my breath away. “Welcome to casa della famiglia Rafe “

THE huge mansion stood majestically. It was surrounded by large trees at the back that stood like guards protecting the mansion. There was a fountain in the front with the statue of an angel in it. Little flowers lined the walkway leading up to the house

“Oh my” Mel looked in amazement. “Doesn’t look like where they murder people”

“Oh, we never bring business home”. I winked at her while she stared at me in shock. “Don’t believe everything you hear about us, darling. Let’s go in”.

“Welcome, Master Rio.” A maid greeted us.

“Hello, Bella. What about the preparations?”

“The rooms have been prepared as requested, Sir”

“Rooms?” Mel asked

I lift her face to me with my fingers. “Thought you would be more comfortable in your own room” I bent and whispered softly in her ear. “But if you wish to stay together, I have no objections, darling”. Mel blushed in response. I’m really looking forward to the next six months.

Bella clears her throat as if to remind us of her presence.  I let go of Mel.

“It’s about time you show your face around here”.

“Ciao, Mama Agnes. I have missed you”. I turn towards the voice and walk to the elderly woman to hug her and place a kiss on her cheek.

Mama Agnes was my nanny from my childhood days but she had slowly become part of the family. She basically controlled the estate. Even my parents had to answer to her on estate matters.

“You say you miss me but you leave me for so long” She whined.

“Oh, Nonna.” As I always called her.  Duty calls and I answer”.

“Of course, you do,” She pats me on the back and turns towards Mel, who had been watching us with hawk eyes.

“And who is this beautiful Lady?” Mama Agnes asked. “Is she the reason you called the house earlier?”

“I forget myself. Yes Nonna, I would like you to meet Mellisia, my fiancée”

As if on cue, a loud voice sounded from the top of the stairs.

“Your what?”

RIO POV“Dante.” Mama Agness exclaimed with joy. “The Rafe Boys are back with me again.”“Ciao, Mama Agness. It’s good to be home.” Dante said, beaming at her. He turns, acknowledges me with a slight nod and then his eyes darken when they land on Mel. I could feel her shiver in response.Dante sure knows how to make an entrance.“Mel, meet my elder brother and heir to Rafe dynasty. Dante Rafe.” I grin when Dante snorts at me for calling him the heir. “And Dante, meet Mel. Your future sister in-law.”“Sister in-law? I thought I heard wrongly before.” Dante turns his eyes back to me. “Are you feeling alright, brother?” “Yes, I am. Brother.” I respond sarcastically.“What dirt does she have on you?” He questioned.“Nothing.” I said flatly. Dante seemed puzzled. I was enjoying this.“Then she has to be pregnant.” He decides.“Oh, are you?” Mama Agness gasped.“I am not.” Mel blurted.“The fiancée can speak?” Dante mocked.I chuckled at Mel’s disgusted look. I was really enjoying this.“

MEL POVThe walls of the mansion seemed to go on forever and our footsteps echoed as Mama Agness led me down the passage. She was going on about the history of the estate but my mind was stuck on thoughts of the man I had just met.Dante. The mysterious Capo of the Rafe Familia. I had thought Rio was beautiful, I mean, he is, but there is something dangerously wonderful about his brother. I have never met a man on the first day and instinctively thought of what his hands can do to a woman’s body.F***, I couldn’t possibly be attracted to Dante. Am I? I wondered. No, I’m not, I can’t be. This is all Rio’s fault, I decided. Since our little car adventure, my hormones have been off the charts. Yes, I blame him. I turn my attention to the walls as we walk. Beautiful artworks and family portraits line them. A picture of a younger looking Rio draped in a full army uniform catch my eye. “Rio was in the army?”“What?” Mama Agness asked, stunned. She turned to the direction I was pointing. “O

Where did you take her, you asshole?”Dante raises an eyebrow in question at me. “Seems it’s not a happy family reunion.” He says.I strut towards Jack and looked him dead in his eyes. “Watch your words in my house or I will cut your tongue and feed it to you.” I whisper to his hearing only.Jack cowers in response as I expect and lowers his eyes to the ground. “I just came for my sister.” he says, calmly now. I settle on the arm of Dante’s chair. “Leave us.” I instruct the men who had tried to hold Jack back. They leave and the sound of the doors closing echoes in the room as I stare down at Jack. He stands, not daring to look in I and Dante’s direction. The surge of rage he had was gone, leaving behind a spineless man wondering if he made the right decision coming here.“Why do you think I have your sister?”“I... I... Mel POV“Good morning to you.” Mama Agness greets me as I walk into the living room the next morning. “Did you sleep well?”If you would classify being horny all night as sleeping well, then I sure did. I nod in response and settle into the sofa next to her.“I was going to come see how you were doing after yesterday’s drama, but I saw Rio coming out of your room and he assured me you were fine and sleeping.”“Hmm.” I mumble. I was really hoping to see Rio this morning because we still need to talk about how we were to play the “marriage act”.“I know it’s not a life you are used to,” Mama Agness continues, “but guns and bloodshed are quite the norm in the mafia life. Even though I do try my best to make sure they keep most of it away from the house.” She holds my hand, turning my attention back to her. “You wouldn’t have to worry about anything.”Feeling my heart flutter with joy at her kind words, I cover her hands with mine. “I’m fine, really.” She raises an eyebrow in doubt. “Ok

It feels like I am looking at an older version of Rio. “I didn’t mean to yell.”“No problem, Miss.” He turns to Nick. “Go tell your Nonna that I’m back.” Nick literally skips out the room, leaving me alone with Reign.“Who are you?” His voice echoes in the room.Shit. Rio hasn’t told his father about me and I have no idea how much I am supposed to tell him about I and Rio’s arrangement.I nervously extend a hand to him. “Good morning, Sir. And you wonder where Rio gets it from.” Mama Agness says.“There is nothing wrong with admiring the work of God.” Getting up from his seat, he places a light kiss on my hand. “Until next time my dear. For now, Welcome to the family.”I get goosebumps when I recall Dante had mouthed the same words. Shaking off the weird feeling, I smile and nod at Reign. “Thank you.”“Dante, walk me out.” He puts back on his glasses and hat. “Ciao, familia.” He bids I and Mama Agness goodbye and heads out, with Dante behind him.“He is a good man.” Mama Agness says, finishing up the rest of her breakfast.“He looks so much like Rio.” I shake my head. “That’s why I had yelled at him when I walked in.”“He knows it was a
