CHAPTER 4

When I finally climbed into bed that night I read a book for a little while before I finally fell asleep.

When I woke up the following morning I dragged myself out of bed and I headed downstairs to get a coffee that I made myself, and I sat in the kitchen drinking it. Even when the breakfast staff came in to start cooking. They weren't used to seeing a member of the family there, but they were going to get used to the fact that I'm not like the others.

When breakfast was served I ate in silence while Sandra made small talk with dad and Leo, deliberately not talking to me which I was completely fine with. And as soon as I was finished eating, I got up and went back to my room.

I got changed into baggy torn jeans, a loose fitting t-shirt and a hoodie with sand shoes on.

I put all of the books in my bag and I headed downstairs and straight out the front door without saying goodbye to anyone.

I left the property and started walking towards the city.

I always left early because it was a long walk towards the city and I refused to catch the bus or go with Leo.

I enjoyed walking, no matter how much dad hated it.

As soon as I got to school, I was walking around the side of the building towards the entrance when someone grabbed me around the waist and held his hand over my mouth.

He dragged me behind the dumpsters and when he let go of me I saw that it was the same dickhead that pushed me into the lockers the day before.

“Do you want to get your ass kicked by a girl?” I growled. And then someone grabbed me from behind. But it wasn’t one, there were two of them. One had each arm while that guy was standing in front of me.

“Skylar is one of my best friends.” He said, walking closer to me. And I used his friends holding me as leverage and I threw the bottom half of my body up and I kicked him in the face.

He fell back and his two friends pulled me back and slammed me against the brick wall.

One of them punched me in the face while the other one punched me in the stomach.

“Back off a bit you two.” The other one said, with blood pouring down from his nose.

“Oh, come on Bruce. Let us have a little fun with her.” One of them grunted. But he growled at them. So they stood back, but they were still holding my arms and they made sure that their legs were in front of my legs so I couldn’t kick Bruce again.

Bruce stalked towards me and he wiped the blood from his face and then he got really close and he put his nose in the crook of my neck. Inhaling my scent.

I looked away from him because he revolted me and I fought to get my arms free.

“Hurry up Bruce. This bitch is strong.” One of his friends said, struggling to hold me against the wall.

So Bruce kneed me in the stomach and punched me in the face, over and over and over again.

I could feel the thick liquid falling from several different places on my face and he just kept punching me.

Pretty soon, the only thing holding me against that wall were his friends.

“Hey. What the fuck are you doing?” Another guy started yelling, pulling Bruce away from me.

“Giving this bitch what she deserves.” Bruce growled.

“I think she’s had enough.” He said.

“Come on guys. We’ll see you later sweetheart.” Bruce said to me as his friends let me go and I fell to the ground.

I managed to sit up and lean against the wall and when I looked up I saw the guy that helped me was still standing there. It was the same guy that was always hanging around with the bullies but he was always at the back, never saying or doing anything to me or laughing at any of their snide comments.

“Are you alright?” He asked, kneeling down beside me.

“Why the hell do you care? Aren’t you one of them?” I asked.

“Not like this.” He said handing me a tissue.

I started wiping the blood from my face, but it was pointless. There was too much blood and I just leaned back against the wall trying to catch my breath.

“Listen, Bruce and those guys, they love pranks but they don’t really mean to hurt anyone ever, if you get to know them you’ll see they are actually very nice, sometimes they go too far but not on purpose. Definitely never this far. They were actually pretty nice people once. I don’t really know what happened. And I don’t know why they are taking it out on you so much.”He said.

“Yes, you do.” I said.

“Well, I mean because you’re the Alpha’s daughter.”

“Is that why you’re being nice to me? Because I’m the Alpha’s fucking daughter?” I asked.

“No. Because I don’t like seeing them bully you.” He said.

“Whatever.” I said.

“I’m Wesley.” He said.

“Congratulations. Look, you’ve already done your good deed for the day. You can leave.” I said.

“I’m trying to be nice to you.”

“Yeah. And Sarah was apparently being nice to me yesterday. Look at how that turned out. Just leave me alone.” I said.

He looked at me with disappointment and a little sadness in his eyes, but he nodded and he got up and left me alone.

I didn’t need his pity and I didn’t want his pity.

I pulled my hood back over my head and I walked into school and straight to the bathroom where I could use water to wash off the blood from my face.

I stayed there for a little while when I finally managed to clear away all of the blood and I headed to my first class.

I sat at the same desk as yesterday and I kept my head down because of the bruises that were covering my face now and the small cuts all over it.

My phone then started buzzing, so I dug into my bag to grab it and I saw that I didn’t recognise the number.

UNKNOWN - I know what you are!

ME - Who is this?

UNKNOWN - You don’t need to know yet. I know who you are and they are going to find out as well. Everyone is going to find out.

ME - Who the fuck is this?

I glanced up at everyone to see if there was anyone staring at me or playing with their phones. And a lot of them had their phones out, but they didn’t look suspicious to me. Not like they were sending cryptic messages to me or anything like that. But I wouldn’t know for sure who was sending me these messages. They could be pretending that it’s not them. I wasn’t sure if it was too much of a coincidence or not and I made sure that I kept my eye on everyone that was around me. My mother had always taught me to watch my surroundings. I didn’t think I would have to do so much of it here. But I guess I needed to watch my back more than ever now. By lunch time that day I went to my locker and I put my books in it and then I headed out the front of the school. I definitely wasn’t going to the cafeteria and I wanted to go somewhere where I knew that I could be alone. And I sat at the table out the front of the school. But I wasn’t alone for long. “Ava.” Someone said from beside me.

I started looking around frantically and I heard something in the distance. Footsteps that were slowly approaching us. I got a glimpse of the gun in a man’s hand who was walking directly towards us and I started to panic. My first thought was to run off and save myself, but then I saw Wesley laying there unconscious and I knew that I couldn’t leave him. I managed to pick him up and get him onto my back very awkwardly and I started trying to run through the woods. It was harder than I thought it would be with Wesley on my back and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to make it back to our clothes and the car like this. So I decided that I needed to find somewhere to hide. I started running in different directions and even backtrailed a couple of times, running around in circles so that man couldn’t catch up with us. I came to a rock formation and I got Wesley up on the rocks while I covered my tracks and got back to the rocks without leaving tracks in the dirt. A trick that my moth

When I arrived at school the next day, I saw that everything was back to normal. Well, my kind of normal. Everyone was staring at me and whispering about me while they were covering their mouths and whispering to their friends so that I couldn’t hear them. I just rolled my eyes, thinking that maybe they had learnt their lesson about pissing me off, but I guess not. Or I guess they just had something else to talk about today. It seemed to be going around though. I saw Leo walking past with a few of his friends, who seemed to have grown in size overnight. He didn’t have that many friends yesterday. But he was showing them something on his phone and when he saw me he made sure that they hushed their voices. I knew that he was behind this. He was doing something to make everyone hate me again. And I wish I could say that I was surprised. But I’m really not. I did think that people were going to start leaving me alone though. So, I put my things in my locker and I walked off towards the ba

As soon as the teacher arrived Wesley let go of me and he winked at me before he walked off to his class and I made it to my desk. During the whole lesson I was sitting there with my hood up, not looking around, although I could feel people looking at me. But I was too preoccupied by Wesley and that kiss and how he just grabbed me like that. The feel of his warm breath on my face and how soft his lips were. How gentle he was, considering how big he was, I wouldn’t have thought that werewolves would be that gentle while kissing someone. It took my breath away and now I couldn’t think of anything but what happened. I didn’t really want my first kiss to be like that, but I can’t say that I’m really disappointed. I really liked it, but it wasn’t how I imagined my first kiss would go. I tried to get it out of my head and I looked up towards the teacher and he was rattling on with stuff that just sounded like a blur to me. I couldn’t make out anything that he was saying at the momen

I ran out the side gate of the house and I kept running until I was far enough away from the house that I knew they weren’t following me. But even then, I didn’t slow my pace. I kept running at a steady speed until I hit the highway and I was running along the highway. It was getting later in the afternoon and the chill in the air was getting more prominent. But I still had my big hoodie on and my boots. Plus I was running, so I wasn’t too concerned about the weather. The cold didn’t bother werewolves as much as it bothered humans. We had a hotter body temperature to them on any given day. So we were pretty fortunate like that. But when I decided that it was going to take me hours to get back to the cabin like this, I ran until I got to the woods. I got deep enough into the woods and I took my clothes off and I put my phone and wallet in my pocket and I shifted into my wolf. I then picked my clothes up in my mouth and I kept running through the woods. A lot faster than I would

I know that you’ve got a lot on your mind with your mother and everything. I just need to say what I have to say.” He said. “Alright.” I said. “I’m sorry about everything that I did today. I know that I shouldn’t have grabbed you like that, I shouldn’t have kissed you. I shouldn’t have done anything like that...” He explained, and I started looking down at my feet. “But I don’t regret it.” He added, and I quickly looked up at him. “You don’t?” I asked. “No. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t want to. I just know that I shouldn’t have done it in front of the entire class. And I’m sorry for that.” He said. “Why do you like me?” I asked. “Because I know

I was glad when school was over that day, Wesley met me at my locker and I saw Leo standing across the hall with his friends. I knew that he was pissed about all the attention that dad was giving me. He had been living with dad for a couple of years before I came into the picture and I know that he definitely thought that he was going to get the pack. I’m not even sure if Sandra and Leo knew about me before he brought me home. But dad was planning a coming out party to introduce me formally to his entire pack. It was going to be a huge affair and it was definitely not something that I was up for right now. I had way too much on my mind, but there was no getting out of it. Dad gave me his credit card this morning, something else that would have pissed Leo off, and he told me to buy whatever I wanted. Even if it wasn’t a party dress. Dad told me that I was still dressing like I was living in the woods, but that’s only because it’s comfortable to me. But then again, I wasn’t us

It wasn’t much, but she made me feel insecure with the way I looked at the moment. She saw Wesley holding my hand and I saw a smirk appear across her face. “I thought you were going to call me. Why didn’t you?” “Because I told you that we were over. And I meant it.” Wesley said. “You always say that we’re over. But we always find a way to work it out.” Claire said, stepping closer to him. But he took a step back. “Claire. This is Ava.” Wesley said. “I don’t care.” Claire spat, looking at me. “Well, I do. We haven’t spoken in two months and now I’ve met someone else. So, you need to back off.” Wesley said. “You really can’t be serious. You’re choosing this thing over me?” Claire asked, looking me up and down again. “Don’t refer to her as a thing. I got out of that car, taking the phone with me, and I got back in the car with Noah and Mason sped off down the highway again. "Are you fucking crazy? You scared the hell out of me." Noah yelled. "Well, I'm glad that I did it." I said, showing him the phone. "What about it?" "Leo just called to ask if I was dead. He set these bastards after me." I said. "Did you say anything?" Noah asked. "Only that I was going to fuck him up. I think he took me seriously." I said. "Probably. Since you just killed two men that were meant to kill you." Noah said. "Exactly." I smirked. "Don't fucking do that to me again." Noah said, pulling me closer to him. I knew that he needed me to be sitting near him just so he could calm down. It was the calming effect of the mate bond that he needed right now. I guess I must have really scared him. "I know that you are used to only thinking about yourself. But you can't do that anymore." Once we got Noah back to the cabin we had to pack up all of our things as fast as we could. If there were stealth warriors hanging around then there was a good chance that they had already made the call to tell their boss where we were. I'd never seen those men before, so I didn't know if they worked for dad or not. But we just knew that we needed to get out of there. We packed up the car in record time and got out of there as fast as possible. Noah and I were in the backseat while the other two were in the front seat. Noah had picked up the pieces of the necklace and he was examining it in the car. Trying to figure out what it was made of. It had to be something made of dark magic to take my memories the way that it did. "Any ideas?" I asked. "None. I don't have a clue about what this material is." He said. "Alright. Well, keep the pieces. Just in case." I said, holding out a ziplock bag for him to put them in. "Just in case what?" He asked. "Just in case I need to ha

As I was sitting on the ground staring at the ring, I was pulled out of it when Mason yelled at me and attacked the warriors that were approaching me. I tried to get to my feet, but I knew that I was really badly hurt right now. At least a few several broken ribs and a broken ankle. I saw Noah slowly getting to his feet and he had blood all over his face. He wasn't looking too good himself, but that didn't stop him from attacking the warriors that were coming near me. He was going to protect me with everything that he had. As the last warriors realized that he was the only one left standing. The only one left alive, he took one last effort to lunge at me but was grabbed my Noah who had extended his claws and ripped the warriors throat out. Dropping his dead body on the ground. I got up out of bed and I looked out the window at the moon that was shining brightly right into my bedroom and I was more confused than ever. If my mother wasn't actually my mother, then what happened to her. Noah mentioned knowing my mother at one point. Now I need to know exactly everything that he knew about her. I got changed into a grey sweater, tights, socks and sand shoes. I left the house and I started jogging around the lake, trying to clear my head. I was running through the woods, dodging the branches, jumping over the ones that were on the ground, it was almost like an obsticle course. Usually something like this was really enjoyable to me, but today it wasn't. I don't know why. There was something going on with me that I couldn't explain. Something that felt strange and foreign. I hated this feeling and I just kept running until I didn't feel like this anymore. But the problem was, the feeling was going away. And by the time I was passing the house for the fourth ti

Knowing the lengths that my father was going to in order to get me back, made me realize that he was more desperate to get me back than I thought. And Noah was determined that it was because he had an agreement with Elias, or he was in Elias’ debt or something like that. Either way, he only wanted me so he could trade me to an Alpha that was going to use me for whatever the hell he wanted. And Noah was damn sure he wasn’t going to let that happen. I was just upset that we had dragged Jax and Mason into this, but they said that they wouldn’t have it any other way. They were going to be beside Noah’s side, no matter what. Even if they were now labelled as kidnappers. That still didn’t make me feel any better. But I had to try and get my head straight. I had to find out what Wesley and his family wanted with me and I needed to find out who my real mother was. It seemed like Isabella Matthews never even existed. Everything about her was just erased to make it look like she was never th

We had no idea where the hell we were going. We just needed to get the hell out of the city. We didn’t know how many allies my father had so Noah was behind the wheel of the car and he took all the side streets until we finally hit the highway and we kept on going. I was sitting in the front with Noah while the other two were chatting in the backseat. “So, if Elias is your father then does that mean you are next in line to his pack?” I asked. “Not anymore. He disowned me when I said that I wasn’t going to go ahead with his plan to kidnap you.” Noah said. “But you didn’t know that I was your mate back then. Why would you not want to do it?” I asked. “Because I saw what he did to your mother. I wasn’t going to let him do it to another girl.” He said. “So, the sadistic Alpha raised a son with morals. That’s unusual.” I said. “Yeah. We need to find somewhere to hold up where they won’t think to look.” Noah said. “I don’t know my dad that well. So, I don’t know where he will think

I snuck back up to my room once I was finished in the office and I made sure that there was no trace of me in the office. And I definitely printed out those correspondences from dad to Elias. I went back up to my room and I paced around for a little while before I sat at my desk and I turned on my own computer. I started researching Elias. But the only thing I could find was all the praise that he was getting in the human world for all the good deeds that he had done for people. All the charities that he was involved with and the schools that he donated money to in poverty stricken neighborhoods. He looked like a real saint on paper, but that was about it. There was nothing in the press to make him look bad. He was never caught up in a scandal. So I typed in my father’s name and he wasn’t in as many articles but they were just as clean as Elias. These men were really careful to keep their true selves hidden. They definitely didn’t want anyone to see what they were really lik

Noah and I sat at the table talking for ages, but I knew the reality of the situation. I knew that I needed to get home. Before my dad realized that I was gone. My phone started ringing and I saw that it was Wesley, but I ignored it. I then sent him a message and told him that dad had me doing some pack work and I couldn’t talk to him now. I didn’t know how I was going to handle the whole Wesley situation, but I knew that I needed to keep it close to the vest. I couldn’t let anyone, except Noah, know what I know. There was too much at stake. Noah drove me home but he stopped down the road so the camera’s and guards didn’t pick up his car or anything like that. “Will you be alright sneaking back in?” He asked. “Yeah. I’ll be fine. I’ve done it heaps of times.” I said. “Alright. Listen, it would be best if Wesley doesn’t suspect anything right now.” He said. “I know. Same with dad and Sandra. Not until I realized that I was standing outside the hotel that Noah was staying in. I stood there staring at the building. Still not moving. Like I was in shock. “Ava.” Someone said, walking up beside me. I turned my head and Jax was there. “Hello counselor.” I said. “Noah already messaged me and told me that you know the truth. Are you alright?” He asked. “I don’t know.” I said. “Come inside.” He said. But I shook my head. “I’m not leaving you out here alone. Come on.” He said. So he took me inside the hotel and up to their penthouse suite. He opened the door and I saw another man sitting on the couch drinking a beer. But as soon as he saw me walk in, he jumped up really suddenly and started acting really weird. “Ava. This is our weirdo friend Mason. And now you see why I was asked to be yo
