Carena:
"What?" I stared at my sister's face, trying to grasp if she was just pulling my leg.
"I didn't want to bring this up earlier, but I caught sight of him with a much younger girl yesterday. I didn't want to stir up trouble, so I kept quiet. But now, with the way they're treating you and then finding out you're pregnant, I just can't keep this truth to myself anymore," she said, gripping my hands tightly as she delivered all the shocking news in one breath. My heart was pounding in my chest.
"Maybe it was just some beta or a gamma? or maybe you misunderstood," I stammered nervously.
"Carena, open your eyes. He's cheating on you. Why would an alpha be taking a beta or gamma to a private hotel room? I'd suggest you confront him, but don't mention me. I still have my college fees to pay, and if he gets upset with me, he might not pay for Markiel and Riona's fees either."
"Don't worry, I won't tell him that it was you who told me about that girl," I replied, feeling overwhelmed with fear about what I might uncover by confronting him. I left her room and retreated to my own, unable to summon the strength to even prepare lunch.
After hours of anxious waiting, the door slammed open and in stormed my alpha mate, wearing a deeply displeased expression.
"What am I hearing? Mom told me you've been sitting on your ass all day and didn't even bother to make lunch?" he bellowed, bursting into the room aggressively, grabbing my arm and pulling me up from the bed.
"I did everything else, cleaned the mansion, and tended to everyone's rooms. I'm pregnant, I need rest," I pleaded with hopeful eyes, watching him intently.
"Oh, come on, Carena. You're acting like no one before you has ever been pregnant. Every she-wolf carries her mate's pups, but do you see them stopping work? So what if you're carrying a baby now? I train every day. Do I complain?" he stared at me with disbelief, seemingly surprised that I dared to request rest.
"Carrying a baby isn't the same as training, Jack!" I retorted.
He rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath, still holding onto my arm and shaking me.
"Oh, right! A baby won't hurt you, but training might. It's all the same. I have to carry weapons and protect the borders every day, while you want to lounge in bed and act all high and mighty because you're pregnant?" His scoff blew air into my face, and I closed my eyes briefly. Why was he being so cold?
"Jack! I've been upset all day because I found out something," I began to explain, now that he seemed desperate to know why I hadn't cooked his and his mother's favorite meals.
"What did you find out now, Carena?" His mocking tone shattered my confidence.
"Did you or did you not go to a private hotel with a much younger she-wolf yesterday?" My question softened his grip on my arm. He pulled back slightly, keeping his gaze fixed on my face.
"You're accusing me of cheating on you?"
The door slammed open, and his mother joined us, looking furious. I should have known she had been eavesdropping on our conversation the whole time.
"This pathetic, wolfless creature is calling an alpha king a cheater, and you're just standing there like a dumb statue, not doing anything about it?" she yelled at her son, causing his jaw to clench.
"Slap her until she can't accuse you of such nonsense again," she pushed him, egging him on until he stepped closer, raising his hand to strike me.
"Somebody saw you!" I screamed reflexively, my hands covering my face.
"Was it the beloved beta of the pack, whom you can't seem to stop gushing over?" He made me uncover my face, and I watched his face, my expression shifted in shock.
"Huh?"
"Why are you even arguing with her? Tell her to get on her feet and cook lunch for everyone," Lady Paula screamed at her son. She seemed angrier than Jack. As for Jack, I had seen many sides of him over the years, but this dense one was new to me. How could someone go from promising to love you forever to changing so much that they're unrecognizable?
"No!" My protest silenced them.
"No? You won't do the chores?"
Lady Paula stepped forward, her fists tightly clenched.
"I won't until he tells me if he's been cheating on me," I asserted, making sure to keep a distance between us and avoid any potential hits now that I was pregnant.
The shocked stare and gaping mouth of my mother-in-law made me wonder if I had asked for something outrageous.
"Do you see the audacity in her eyes?" she turned to her son, pointing a finger at me.
"I see it all, Mother. I guess this pregnancy made her think she's above everyone," his eyes flickered with a tinge of red.
"As for you—" he left his mother behind and approached me, "yes, I was with a younger girl, but she wasn't just some girl I took to the hotel to sleep with. It was our doctor."
I frowned, waiting for an explanation as to why he was with our doctor in a hotel.
"She wanted me to be alone to contain my grief to myself when she tells me the bad news," he continued angrily.
"What—bad news?" I stuttered.
"That there have been some complications in your pregnancy," he added, averting his gaze from mine.
"Huh? What did you do?" his mother turned to me, grasping my arm as she yelled in my ear.
"Did you harm the baby?" she continued, surprising me with yet another blatant accusation. I avoided her as I was hyper focused on his words.
"But I met her in the morning; she didn't say anything to me."
I wondered what was happening. Finally being pregnant after years of being told I was barren, only to have the happiness snatched away from me so abruptly, felt incredibly unfair.
"Huh! You couldn't even keep our heir safe?" his mother slapped my arm, and tears began to well up in my eyes.
It was the kind of news that took me by surprise. And on top of that, his mother's constant yelling and hitting didn't even allow me to react properly.
"I wanted to talk to you about it sooner, but you wouldn't stop going on about—my pregnancy this—my pregnancy that—" he rolled his eyes, shaking his head until our gazes locked.
"Carena! This pregnancy is killing you."
Carena: Hours had passed since the argument. His mother had finally left the room with him to calm him down while I had to calm myself down all by myself. It didn't matter what the doctor said. I was determined to make it work. But when Jack returned, I realized things were getting complicated now. He stood before me and then uttered, "Abort the baby!""Our baby!" I corrected him immediately, "You want me to abort our baby?" It was so difficult to even look him in the eye now."Don't look at me with those big teary eyes. I'm not asking you to abort the baby because I don't want this baby," he instantly turned to hold me by my arms and spoke softly."Then why? Why do you want me to abort your heir, Jack?" My words came out in a hopeless murmur."Carena! The doctor said there are complications," he uttered with a sad look on his face."What complications?" I couldn't stop my tears from spilling anymore. It was devastating news to me. This pregnancy gave me so much hope, and now I had
Carena:"What happened?" Dr. Kelly inquired, concern etched across her face."Nothing. Has my family arrived yet?"Feeling down after losing my baby, I hoped my family would cheer me up. Besides, her confession had really messed up my already messed up brain."Oh no! Nobody has come to visit you." Dr. Kelly offered a comforting smile as she ran her hand through my hair. "I'll see you in the morning," she assured me."I want to go home. Can you please discharge me?" I pleaded, no longer wishing to remain alone."Okay, but it's too late, and no one has come to pick you up." She sounded somewhat conflicted as she agreed to discharge me."It is alright. I will call Jack right now. Just please discharge me," I requested and she gave me a head nod. After she left the room, I grabbed my phone and called Jack. The empty walls of the room seemed to swallow me whole."Hey?" Jack's voice sounded distant at first, then he cleared his throat and asked, "Did you wake up?""I did. Jack! Can you plea
Carena:Seeing me standing in the doorway with tear-filled eyes made Tabitha snatch up a silk purple gown from the ground and quickly slip into it. I was in utter disbelief. My little sister was in my bedroom, wearing my silk gown and having an intimate session with my mate."How dare you!" Without wasting a single minute, I lunged at the bastard alpha who had no decency to lower his eyes after being caught in a situation like this. But before I could slap him, he grabbed my wrist and twisted my arm, kneeing me in the back and causing me to fall to the ground."Ahhhhhhh!" A loud cry escaped my lips as I hit the floor. My body felt utterly weak from the procedure. The doctor had even warned me not to walk too fast for now. I was supposed to be resting, not getting kicked in my back."How could you—" With a hand on my back and my head up, I asked Jack. He was trying to cover Tabitha behind him so she could change peacefully."I'm not the one she needs to be shielded from. How could you
Carena:I had nothing on me except my phone and some money in my bag. I traveled for hours on the bus and then hopped on a train to the largest pack up north-The North Comet Pack. After getting off the train, I wrapped my arms around myself while navigating through the rain as I made my way towards the pack's border. There stood a massive black door obstructing my view ahead.“I don't recall there being a gate,” I murmured, pondering why the security had been beefed up. It had been years, so many changes had occurred. The last time I left was when the alpha kings of North and South were not on good terms, and things only deteriorated after that.My ex always boasted about how he would have handled being an alpha king of the North as well. I didn't say it to his face back then, but I could definitely say he wasn't even doing a great job in the South.“Stop right there,” a guard's loud and commanding voice halted me in my tracks, causing me to quickly backtrack my steps.“Who are you?”
Carena:Lady Mary Jane departed with her guards, leaving me behind with a mind in disarray. I felt utterly clueless, as no one had bothered to fill me in. My father had actually stepped out to follow Lady Jane to inquire about the details, while Maanya hadn't uttered a word to me."What debt have you guys received?" I couldn't bear it any longer and followed her into the kitchen, where she was stowing away all the food they had prepared to serve the queen mother, who hadn't even bothered to taste a single thing. The power dynamics within our pack had deteriorated significantly. Imagine being in debt, yet wasting so much money without receiving any appreciation for it."Why the sudden return, Carena? Didn't you depart with your family to live a life of luxury with the enemy of our pack?" She tossed the sponge into the sink and turned to face me."Sis, I am no longer his mate," I responded, averting my gaze. I couldn't discern what angered my sister and father more: my decision not to p
Carena: I stood before the imposing black mansion, scanning my surroundings as the security guard phoned the lady inside to inform her of my arrival. He assessed me while conversing with her.“Feel free to enter,” he ended the call and gestured for me to step inside. I had chosen a simple white dress paired with old boots from my highschool days.Inside the pack, numerous changes had taken place. The atmosphere was different, charged with an air of mystery and uncertainty. Neighbors were not very keen on meeting each other anymore. Everybody kept to themselves but the gossips would circle the entire pack in seconds.I leisurely made my way into the foyer, greeted by an aura of darkness reminiscent of a haunted mansion. The foyer offered a gloomy welcome, with shadows dancing around the dimly lit space. The big chandelier hanging down the ceiling gave me ick. It was huge, making me wonder if it would fall on me.Guided by a maid, I followed her to a living room tucked away beside the
Carena:"Alright, so you should begin with fixing up his sheets," the maid kept rambling on while I felt frozen in place. I couldn't even sense my heartbeat at that moment. It wasn't that I was upset because he was disabled, but rather due to the lack of transparency."Wait a moment!" I shut my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves and grasp the reality."Yes?" The maid rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest."What's going on? I mean—I need to go home. I'm not feeling well," I stammered, feeling like a fool. But at that moment, I couldn't even respond like a decent person. All I could think about was my family deceiving me, just like the other half of my family had."You're supposed to start working today. He has another maid, but she isn't coming today, so you have to stay," she pouted, though in reality, she was trying to appear cute. She seemed annoyed that it was taking so much time to get to work."Then I need a break," I couldn't stay put. I had this u
Carena: "Just one last bite," I held the spoon up to his lips and fed him the liquid food with much difficulty. He could barely open his mouth and would tremble miserably when he did."Now the medicine," I muttered, holding up the liquid in a syringe and then making him swallow it. His mouth would only open an inch, and whenever it did, his face would contort to one side."Are you aware of what's going on?" I asked as I stayed seated beside his bed."Okay! Blink twice if yes and once if no," I leaned in closer, engaging in a tense stare into his eyes. "Do you know I am going to be your wife in a week?" I asked, noticing that he blinked twice."There you go! That's not bad. See, we can communicate like that," I smiled until a sudden memory struck me. It was an odd thought, but it reminded me of my ex falling sick. He would become so grumpy, and I remember having to stay awake beside him. Even if he caught me blinking from sleep, he would groan and get upset with me.He used to find it
